I feel so bad for the barman and his friends and family. He seemed like a nice guy and now will forever be thought of as a serial killer!
I like how Elisabeth Rohm played Kate. on a rewatch you can tell that at the beginning even though she's kind of hitting on Angel, her guard is way up and she's probably too much of a cop to really just take a break to be social and try to meet someone, as if she feels that's an obligation.
To allow Joss to direct both the Buffy and Angel season premieres, we shot it in mid-June and Buffy in mid-July. The writers were excited that we had all this extra time padding inbetween shooting and airing. Then David Fury submitted the original script for this episode. The ONLY common items between that and this were Doyle wanting to date Cordy, Cordy's Angel cards, and Angel meeting undercover cop Kate at a bar. But it was a much darker story where she was investigating a drug ring and had gone so undercover that she had become addicted to cocaine. I believe Angel was to almost bite someone. And her struggle to get clean was to mirror his struggle for redemption. But the Studio said, "Hell no!" We didn't shoot episode 2 for three weeks.
I think I still have one of those Angel cards somewhere.

The character of Kate (I like her, too) is another nod to classic detective fiction and movies. In those, the private eye hero almost always has a police contact, someone who may be wary of him but also grows enough respect for him to give him info and help when he needs it.

Angel is a really surprising show. I think it even surpasses Buffy in a lot of ways, and early on. David already proved his acting chops in Buffy, but he proves it even more in his show. The humor that they're able to write into his character is always a great surprise, and David nails it every time.

I love that smile Angel has as he looks around and says "You actually live here?" That is Angel's Sadism coming out just a little.
I love when Angel says "God yes," at the end of the episode. He really didn't want to go out. He wants to be alone and to be introspective. And for him, that introspectiveness is not a sign of poor emotional state. He is just an introvert.
The "Donkey Demon" line comes back every so often. Basically, Cordelia misheard the Spanish word "Burro" (donkey) when Angel said "Burrower". Fairly light and dumb joke, but worth knowing about 😅
oh, nice! I didn't know Burro means Donkey in Spanish! I do now 😅
I have seen this episode so many times and I never got that joke until now. That’s what you get for learning French instead of Spanish 😂.
I live in the SW United States, near the Mexico border, so we have a lot of Hispanic culture here. Funny story. You can call someone Burro in Spanish and it means they are stubborn (stubborn donkey, haha). Anyway, I bought my parrot from someone who owned a music store. One of the employees used to always call the parrot Burro! So now my parrot says "Burro" all the time and I say, "Linus, yes you are!" : )
oh yeah, Kate, I forgot about her! she is a good extra who appears as needed, probably my favorite moment was when you said" been there done that" just before Angel. I'm glad your liking it, there's so much good yet to come, enjoy Jules!
While I like the running gag of people not understanding the logo on the cards, but it is actually pretty apparent that it is an angel.

Angel is way better as a main character than as a sidekick, splitting him out from buffy was very smart. Also, They had to take Cordelia into angel. While she looks 23 in high school clothes, in a college/adult outfit she cant pass for a student of any age.
I love how Angel gets a chance to shine here!

I'm always happy to see new people experiencing this series (and Buffy) .. there's a reason i've had Angelus as a username across multiple platforms since Buffy/Angel since the late 90s. Even though this is an episodic series, its definitely character and story driven which is the best way to go. Looking forward to the rest of your season reaction.
Angel Investigations is officially born! Of all the directions they could have taken Angel for his spin-off, private investigator isn't a choice most people would have thought of, but I'm so glad that's the path they took. I just love the whole concept. You can get Angel Investigations t-shirts, and I've had my eye on one for a while now.
I love how this episode carries on the momentum of the first episode to give us a great monster-of-the-week episode, that feels different to the Buffy MotW episdodes. Its noir atmosphere makes it feel more like a case of the week, with just as much depth as any big story. The concept of the burrower is intriguing and a great bit of symbolism for the search for love and connection. It really hammers home the idea that Angel is to adulthood and the work-life balance, what Buffy is to the high school experience.
And of course, we meet the wonderful Kate Lockley. I love her dynamic with Angel and I wonder if we'll be seeing her again. 😉
I also like how this show really starts to explore demon cultures and species and shows that not all demons are bad. It was touched upon in Buffy, but it's explored further with Doyle and will continue to be expolored over the course of the show.
Finally, I forgot to say this last week, but I hope you watch the opening credits at least once, because Angel's theme music is so beautifully chilling, I adore it. I'd highly recommended listening to the full version some time too - it's called Sanctuary by Darling Violetta.

Been there, done that - Jules you are on point! Hahaha. You're going to love this show once it gets going❣and also how it fills out the Buffy story. If you just watch Buffy you have no idea you are missing little things here and there. This show also gave everyone the opportunity to see just how silly David Boreanaz is.
I love seeing this new side to Angel! It really shows there's so much more to him than just being Buffy's boyfriend. It's AWESOME!

Fun fact about this episode, it was originally going to be much darker with a slightly different story, Kate was originally going to be a cop undercover as a prostitute and she became a drug addict as a result. The WB Network requested they nake the episode lighter so it was rewritten, I believe it was going to be about a prostitution ring that was controlled by a demon but I can't remember. I think it would have definitely set up that this show was targeted to a more mature audience since Buffy is a show about growing up while Angel deals with about life as a grown up. That is why I love both shows equally, despite being in the same universe you can see the tone differences though I do remember that some fans treat them as separate universes.
It has been so long since watching these episodes, and it is fun rediscovering them with you! Great job on the commentary, as you were saying their lines even before they did! That is being on the same wavelength! Just as you were mentioning "Batman" you see Angel watching over "his" city! The original name of Los Angeles is The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of the River Porciuncula (from Spanish). It is simultaneously one of the longest names, and shortest names (LA) for a city! It is beautiful, but filthy, a city of dreams and nightmares, and a city of wealth and poverty extremes. It is a city of paradox, for sure, such as a vampire, demon, and self-absorbed wannabe actress saving its residents from the forces of evil!

The grappling gun that Angel uses always makes me laugh when I watch this episode because supposedly the actor was going to play Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Poor Cordelia, I have to say that both Doyle and Angel came off as a bit dim, over the business cards. I really enjoy Cordelia in this show, broadening her character, along with Angel. They just seem more real than they did in Buffy.
Talking up the Doyle/Cordelia thing... "half demon, but could be worse." Yes, and she has seen worse... one name - Xander!🤣🤣

I had forgotten about Kate here, until I rewatched this episode a few weeks ago. I've always liked this actress, and the script does make it seem Angel has found a friend. She's smart, and tough, 2 qualities this show certainly has and uses.
I commented, on last weeks Buffy, that it reminded me of the X-Files Gender Bender episode - with the girl running off from her regimented home life to have some fun, amongst the humans, but this episode, was even more so.
A little more recap things going on here, the rules of inviting a vampire in, etc. Which I think is just a bit thrown in, here and there, for people who, like me, had not watched Buffy.

I don't why but I liked the bartender in this episode. He's to me another Sunday or background minor character I wanted more and become a regular long stand character in the Buffyverse Angelverse. I liked his acting (mind you before the demon possess him) he was decent good kind character. I think his presences stood out in each scene her was in and that stamps a could be long term background extra for me.
They seem to have some great side characters in this show and also Buffy! I love that even the one off characters seem to matter 💜
Good reaction and I am glad you are judging Angel on its own. Angel was on after Buffy and yhr first job was to keep the Buffy audience before thye made Angel able to be its own show. I think the producers and writers did an admirable job this first year. Buffy had just completed a great Season 3 and to create a show and a Buffyverse was a challenge that was accomplished.
Angel is very different to Buffy but I love it!! I'm a few episodes ahead and it's made me laugh, cry and want more 💜
Even more admirable: the first 6 episodes had Buffy writers behind it until the actual Angel team (just downstairs of the Buffy writers room) took over.

When thinking about which episode of BtVS aired on the same day as AtS, I'm glad this episode aired as I struggle with _Living Conditions._

I've just checked the timeline for Buffy and Angel and for the time being, you're good, so long as you keep watching the Buffy episodes before the Angel episodes (eg: Buffy S4E4 before Angel S1E4, Buffy S4E5 before Angel S1E5, etc).
However, in future seasons, you WILL run into situations where one show will spoil major events for the other show.
So if you want to avoid this, you should seriously consider switching to release order starting with Buffy season 5/Angel season 2.
Just keep this in mind for the future.

The mid stop he does to realize his surroundings and take in the dump Cordy lives in is that ol good Buffyverse Angelverse witty humor the shows core is and that gets me smiling every time. Angel has better spots haha the smirk he makes when he asks her if she lives there actually like saying my rent free places are better lol

I think the early episodes of Angel were actually quite good, and actually I preferred the style of Angel, and I love BTVS! The Detective Agency was a great idea to forge Angel's character. You could feel the attraction tension between Kate and Angel as the season develops. The comedy surrounding the business cards was actually very funny, ( butterfly, lobster ). From the S3 BTVS episode Amends, you can see that Angel is determined to do as much as he can to help others and atone for his previous sins, and in his own show this arc is developed further. I read they had to re-shoot a lot of scenes for early episodes as it had a bit in E1 where Angel was licking blood off a carpet and the WB objected to this so they had to tone it down. This was very much like an X-Files type of episode, with the monster of the week etc, Directed by James A Contner who Directed one the best X-Files episode in Soft Light, he also did many BTVS episodes also. Still a great follow up to City Of. Believe me the show just gets better and better. Great to see you enjoying it. Angel absolutely is a brilliant show in its own right I hope you stick with it, the way this show develops is amazing, S5 of Angel is off the charts.

I love this episode, its one that really sticks out. The song Touched by Vast is great and there are other reasons why this episode is good.

This episode happens to feature two songs that I love. Touched, by Vast, and Girlflesh, by T.H.C. Someone on the production team must have really liked T.H.C. because you'll be hearing more of their stuff during season 4 of Buffy.

If you notice, after the club and it transitions the bedroom for that first couple, and they are laying in bed, neither of them looks like they just had a good time. The s*x was not all that good apparently.
It's the second episode of Angel and it is a great show not the
same as Buffy but it does have some humor in it though I'm
liking it and I also like Doyle he adds the humor to the episodes,

Now I admit that I did not get quite as into Angel as I did Buffy - for the same reason that I don't like Torchwood as much as I like Dr.Who ... I don't like getting 'gritty and dark' mixed in with my escapist fantasy. But I am thinking that Angel needs to get a serious re-watch ... ... ...
Oh and just to remind you it exists (for later) I just watched the short teaser trailer for Slayers ... and now I feel really old seeing how our favourites have aged. But I think that perhaps Emma Ford (Anya) might actually be part demon as she doesn't seem to have aged much!
EDIT: By the way, as it seems to be my wont to keep piling up things for you to watch, have you ever heard of a sci-fi series called Babylon 5? It is probably the greatest ensemble of well written characters ever put on screen and it does 'flawed people' much, much, better than the 'everyone is grey' crap that was the Battlestar Galactica remake.
Oh and I have a suspicion that Kate had some inspiration from Kathleen Turner's "V.I. Warshawski" :) Another recommendation :chuckles: The film is good but I think the BBC radio play is excellent.

No.... I don't know what noise it was but if you include a time stamp it could help 😅 the only noise I can think of are crows, or the delivery man opening the gate. Those are the most frequent sounds I hear when recording.

Angel and Cordelia are great, but it's also nice to see new characters like Doyle and Kate. I just hope none of them get the Miss Calendar treatment.
The Miss Calendar treatment can refer to a variety of things 😅 my initial dislike of her to her... unfortunate circumstances!
Well you could say that about any character in the Buffyverse, no need to mention any names there. Think in this show it could only be Angel who could avoid that treatment, as he's the name of the show. I mean we lost the first principle, then the second, and also Larry and even Kendra.

@@Tantalus010 I was replying to Michael, who mentioned "any character in the Buffyverse" - which includes Jessie, which means it's not moot. Indeed, people often forget that Xander lost one of his best friends to the vamps, and had the stake in his hand that dusted Jessie, even though it was someone else that shoved him into it. This clearly had an impact on Xander which lasts most of not all of the series, impacting him at a visceral level in his hate for vampires. Just because nobody really talks about him later doesn't mean his death was irrelevant.
