Sarah's acting at the end was devastating 😢
But so good, because it felt so real, so sincere
She was on that sopa All My Children back in the 90s, even got an emmy. She trained with the best when it comes to emotional acting. She's funny and smart but can totally wreck you when she's falls apart on a show. I mean even back in the first season of her own show, that last two episodes when she found out she was going to die. She pulled that breakdown so well. And she only gets better as the show goes on.
17:14 "He is not a lower being." To me, the most significant and moving line of the episode.
SMG in the goodbye scene wasn't acting, he was actually crying!
In fact, at one moment David doesn't call her Buffy but Sarah, wanting to comfort her.
She still loves the relationship between her character and Borenaz's and it's easy to understand why filming the scene was difficult for her.
I think we will all remember them, Bangel 🥲😢😭

One of my favourite episodes from the Buffyverse. Sarah and David's acting is amazing and heartbreaking at the end (plus hearing him calling her Sarah). I'll never recover from this episode.
I am going to watch that part again right away (OH BOY) because I want to hear him say Sarah's name!!

One of my absolute favorite angel episodes! Sarah and David knock it out of the park the whole episode, but especially that last scene is so well acted, and cuts deep.
Trivia: David was so moved by Sarah's performance in that last scene that when he embraces her, you can hear him say 'It's ok Sarah...'
Not sure if they meant to leave it in there, but if you turn the volume way up you can still hear him say it!
I've now listened to that moment a few times and it's INCREDIBLE and I love it so much 😭😭
Sarah Michelle Gellar said in an interview that she loved being the Maria to David B.'s Tony, ("West Side Story" for those who are unaware) when Buffy keeps repeating, "I'll never forget..." Tears everytime.

I love how pissed off Buffy is with Angel at the start and Angel deserves every bit of it.Then we get into the Buffy and Angel angst and drama show. As you say, this is a pretty devastating episode and SMG's acting in that last section always kills me.
The drama show! A great way to put it 🤣 I love that they have their very own theme music for when their drama starts up. It's just warning us to reach for the tissues!!

It was such an emotional but satisfying episode. Sigh... I guess this really is goodbye for Buffy and Angel 😭
I feel like this is the essence of a Whedon show -- beautiful, yet brutal. It's so so lovely to see Buffy and Angel together again, and so happy together. They were adorable and funny and sweet and beautiful. So for Angel to have to go back, and for only him to remember what they experienced... OWWWWW. My heart. 💔
I think the hardest line to hear is Buffy crying, saying, "I heard your heart beat." 💔💔💔 That final scene between them before they go back in time just guts me. But I give Sarah and David major credit, because this whole episode is really fantastic and they're so good in it together.
P.S. On a happier note, my favorite funny part is Angel realizing he's mortal and hungry for food, lol. Him devouring everything in sight and delighting in pop-tarts and chocolate, and then realizing he hates yogurt... LOL! So funny. Makes me laugh every time. I love the way this show has such a great balance of dark and light, sad and funny.
Hope this one wasn't too hard for you to watch, Jules, especially after enjoying the funny that was the Buffy Thanksgiving episode. Joss Whedon giveth, and then he taketh away. 😉😄 Damn it, Whedon!
Oh my gosh, "I heard your heart beat" 😭😭😭 These two are just so precious together. They were my first love for a couple on Buffy and they will always, always be so special to me.
And I loved that part where Angel is devouring anything he can! He just looked SO carefree and happy. We rarely see Angel smile, and when it does, it's like the whole world lights up 🥰
I wish Buffy could remember this day too. At least Angel has the memory. I think it shows him that what they had was real and even though painful I’d rather have that great love than not.
So to answer your question from the last Buffy episode yes vampires can eat and taste human food but it doesnt nourish or taste the same as it would for a human.
Edit: Also, think there something you're missing in your analysis of Angel's decision. As much as I was about keep Buffy safe he also made the point that he can't help other people if he's just human. At this point it's not just about him being with Buffy it's about fighting the good fight.
Funny how the last Buffy episode I was pondering food, and in this one we see Angel in absolute bliss with an assortment of goodies 🥰

This was a real 'heartbreaker' of an episode. Great writing again, but the writers know how torture the viewers. Brilliant acting by both SMG and David Boreanaz at the end of the episode similar to BTVS SE E10 Amends at the end where Angel is trying to kill himself after being mentally tortured by The First Evil. This acting here is so intense he actually whispers and calls her Sarah, oh and keep those tissues handy for this show! We all thought this episode was heartbreaking, but then! Great reaction again, having seen both show many times I have to to say the very best episodes are Angel are just off the charts.

When I saw the triple play between Doomsday for Who, Pangs for Buffy and I Will Remember You for Angel coming… well, now you know why I suggested it might be a good idea to keep the ice cream on standby.
Yeah, this… hurts. Because it’s something we all know - the love and happiness we all dream of and how often do we say “Oh, if only for one day, I’d do anything for one day.” And then you do. But can you live with just one and then never have the sun rise on it again? Credit to Sarah and David for the performance.
Actually so very true. There are a few moments in my life where I'd like more moments, more chances and you are so right. Given an additional day... wouldn't that just.... hurt more? Interesting thoughts. Thank you, Matt 💜
It's been a long time before my current rewatch, but I do remember that this show will break your heart.
Yeah you can hear him whisper “It’s ok Sarah” when he starts hugging her and it’s almost a private moment between them because she’s covering his face on screen and he almost says it to her quietly so no one would notice. It’s very moving.

When Buffy tells Angel, "I only came to see you face to face to tell you I can't see you face to face..." is a callback to when Buffy Told Giles that she only came to tell him about the vampire in the girls locker room in the first episode.

2. Stop predicting the lines, especially Buffy's, or we will start suspecting you are a slayer or another supernatural creature.
3. This one episode I mostly avoid watching, because it makes me feel even more lonely than usual, not only the part where Angel is alive spending time with Buffy, but also the part where he is the only one remembering the day.
4. As for you, since it was obviously pulling on your heartstrings too, I hoped you got consoled/comforted afterwards or had a yummy piece of chocolate (seems like that had a special place in your heart, based on your reaction to that part).

I often do sneak in a piece of chocolate after particularly emotional episodes 🤣 it really does help! I'm weird though, a box of chocolates usually lasts me for a good month or two as I only have a bit here and there. My birthday chocolates are still going strong 🤣
@@julesreacts Little suggestion: "If it is gone to fast, try switching to a chocolate with higher cocoa percentage. Does not taste as good to some (we have a certain word for this kind of chocolate, but I won't bother you with the German word), but is less processed.
It's the ultimate expression of giving up your life for someone you love. It's the anti Romeo and Juliet. It is a small mercy that also feeds into his curse that he alone holds the memory. Whether it brings him comfort or pain, it definitely focuses his mind on the suffering that keeps the curse active.

I do enjoy the implications in this episode that Angel becoming human in this episode was "meant to be" according to the Oracles; as in, that timeline he undid was supposed to be his destiny and he's writing his own. I love that, because it's the ultimate fate versus free will and the show chose free will; and it has a huge knock-on effect in both shows, because imagine how different all of the stories would be moving forward if Angel had remained human and stayed with Buffy.
In addition to a great reaction, great job editing. You managed to highlight so many moments in act 1 that really twist the knife later.

SMG is a seriously underrated actress. The fact she never got an Emmy for Buffy is insane. I'm not the type to cry from a TV show, but she always manages to make me when she hits these emotional scenes. 💔

Unfortunately for SMG, the years when BtVS was airing overlapped with The Sopranos and The West Wing, and Edie Falco and Allison Janney were busy winning all the awards.
@@2323stickboy Nah, it was deeper than that. BtvS was straight up snubbed by the Academy. Partly for what it was, partly for where it aired. Just look at OMWF being "accidentally" left off the nomination ballots. While there were definitely other shows that were stiff competition BtvS should have gotten more than the 2 wins it did out of its 14 nominations.
@@xyex I agree with you, I'm just stating the facts. The voters for these awards will never give anything to a low budget genre show on a network that has a small viewership. But also, the actresses who did win were great in their roles and deserved their wins.
I wasn't the biggest angel and buffy person but this episode made me sob my eyes out.

P.S.: I think this episode is all the evidence we need that Joss enjoys making Angel suffer more than any of his other characters. It's also further evidence that Angel has the strongest, most resilient character out of everybody in the Buffyverse. He's survived thousands of years of torture in a Hell dimension, and now he's been given a day of what he's always wanted only to have to give it back. Self-sacrifice is Angel's true superpower.

I'll say it again: Good on you for going into the episodes with your eyes open!
The acting, especially SMG's, was brilliant. I have a possible problem with the episode, though: The fact that nothing changes by the end of it. And I'm not talking about the swallowing of the day... I'm talking about the way Angel treats Buffy. The ep. opens with Buffy furious with Angel who, just like old times, has made a decision for and behind her back only to do that AGAIN during the episode which then ends with Angel making the final decision AGAIN. There's no development here for Angel's character when it comes to Buffy. That's unfortunate, also because it reflects on Buffy and Angel as a couple. They're not equals in this relationship. He doesn't respect her or what SHE wants, even if she's an adult now. If that's what the writers were going for - showing us that Angel is a control freak and/or that he (still) thinks of Buffy as a kid or, worse, as someone he has authority over, they nailed it. It's why I dislike Angel and the ship but at least the writing here is consistent. Otherwise, this ep. serves as no more than a way of giving B/A shippers closure (which was the writers' intent in making this ep. regardless).
Other than that, the episode, to me, emphasizes why these two are wrong for each other (beyond the vampire/human thing or the curse). It emphasizes the problems they've always had ever since before they officially started dating. It hasn't gotten better, even when they are gifted happiness. The same problems still linger around and Buffy still ends up crying. That's because Angel, as Buffy rightfully observed, likes too much playing the hero. It also reinforces the narrative that he sees Buffy as a dismal in distress he needs to rescue and make decisions for. In the end, he needs to remain that hero - that's his priority now. That's the real reason he made the decision to erase the day. Sure, the Oracles (claimed) Buffy would die if he stays human. But newsflash: she's a slayer. Her chances of NOT dying fighting are pretty damn low. If he stayed human and she died, at least she would have died happy (theoretically anyway). This decision made little sense to me. It just felt like an excuse by Angel, especially when we take into account how weak and helpless being human made this hero feel. I doubt he'd ever make that sacrifice, even for Buffy. If that's what the writers were going for, kudos. Either way, this episode proves that these two are better off apart.
The well-executed part of this episode is Buffy herself... I mean, aside from the lousy excuse to pop up in LA, which hasn't been established beforehand. Buffy is acting her age, which I found very realistic. She wants to be treated like an adult now that she's in college, but she's still emotionally immature (we've also seen that with Parker). The way she cries "how am I supposed to go on with my life..." Girl, you're only 18! You'll go on with your life 😜 You can literally see Buffy's push to adulthood ("I understand"). In the end, she manages to put her foot down and, regardless of what Angel thinks, be the one to make the decision that's previously been decided on by Angel - to move on from each other.

part of the reason for this episode was to let the audience know that these were separate shows. Buffy is Buffy, and Angel is Angel, so they would not have tons of intersecting plots and crossovers every couple of episodes. They take place in the same universe, but they are their own shows.
Oof, this one is really hard to watch. Just very difficult thanks to the final scene, and the fact that Angel is the only one who will remember it.

It's crossover episodes like Pangs/I Will Remember You, The Harsh Light of Day/In the Dark, and future episodes in the Buffyverse which make it preferable to watch both shows together instead of on their own...especially for first time viewers. It helps answer the questions as to why characters from the other show make an appearance and it completes the overall story and character arcs. Even though I've already seen both shows I still find it impossible to watch them on their own.

There are a number of nominations for the most tragic _Angel_ episode (you’ll probably already have noticed that _Angel_ is a much darker show than _Buffy_ ), but this is easily in my top three. SMG’s performance is also Emmy worthy.
they say to avoid the title of the 18th episode because the episode's title is a major spoiler.
It's a bit hard to avoid titles when selecting the episode, but I usually don't take too much notice of them until afterwards, to be fair!

This is such a great, but ultimately cruel and heartbreaking episode. I'm glad that Buffy's first leap over into Angel wasn't wasted, and it really served as a kind of tragic epilogue to their relationship.
It's hard seeing Angel so happy, even through simple pleasures like food and being able to see his reflection, knowing full well that it won't last.
Don't worry though, I'm sure the next episode won't be as painful. Surely they wouldn't hit you with back-to-back heartbreak, would they?
Buffy's visit to LA certainly wasn't wasted as it was one of the most emotional episodes yet 😢

So after Pangs which is one of my most favourite crossover episodes to one of my least favourite. I think the Angel to Buffy crossovers tended to work while the Buffy to Angel episodes generally didn't.
This one felt more like fan service. They gave us the relationship that could never be. I did like the call back to peanut butter on Angel's bed.
What did Giles say? "A vampire in love with the slayer. It's rather poetic, in a maudlin sort of way. "

Fans started sending the writers abd cast peanutbutter and chocolate to try to get them to get them together again. Fir safety reasons, we couldn't eat any of it. Talk about painful. Acroomfull of that, and I could not eat any.
Now THAT is misery 🤣 Angel and Buffy have nothing on that hahaha
@julesreacts I came close to eating some. But angry fans can be scary. Arund the same time, show runner David Greenwalt walks out of his office and pins a fan letter to the wall and returns. It was mainly a fan, angry that happy Buffy and Angel were teased, but there was the one line, "David Greenwalt, if that's your real name...." He co-wrote the episode.
this one is a hard one. its good though. and he was right to trake it back. but im sure it hurt forever. knowing, and her not knowing.
Angel seemed a little forced into the Buffy episode. I think it was just an excuse to create this episode.

Hah, it's kind of funny the way, by the time we get a few seasons in, viewers of these shows have been low-key traumatised into never believing _any_ happy moment :).
(and SMG is just phenomenal - I could stop there :) - at the end of this one, you'd need a heart of stone not to feel her pain, the way she delivers that sort of _desperation_ to hold onto what they had)

@@julesreacts Here's the thing, it's not about expectations. It's about wants. If you want something bad to happen, it will and you'll feel bad for wanting it. If you want something good to happen, it will, but in such a gut twisting manner that you'll feel bad for ever having wanted it in the first place.
And with this one episode, all the hope any Bangel shipper had was gone forever! At least it was fine while it lasted. 😉

Remember Buffy's prophecy dream where she and angel get married and they walk out into the sunlight, and then Buffy dies. This episode is what that dream was about. Angel stays human, allowing them both to have the relationship that they both wanted, a future together; but the cost is that Buffy will die. This is a price Angel can't pay no matter how much he wants that future. I love how the Buffyverse can do callbacks in unexpected and cryptic ways, across multiple seasons and even in different shows. We can tell this is alluding to that dream because when Angel walks out into the sun to see Buffy, the Arch he walks under, that whole scene has a wedding vibe.

A great episode here. It proved your prediction, from the previous Buffy episode, "I'm excited. I'm happy. I'm vibrant. You know what? It's going to be miserable isn't it?"🤭 You just didn't know it was a two-parter, and the pain would be in the second hour.😅
My opinion on this? I think, specifically, Angel and Buffy can never be happy together. But that has been known for a while. There are just little happiness teasers, scattered here and there, which, as you say, never survive the episode. But, on a larger scale - no one in this series survives love. The message here almost seems to be that love blinds everyone to reality, and cannot be trusted, if we are to remain safe.😥
Also, Buffy, and Angel, get so into protecting the other that it takes away some of their focus, at times, but also leads to trust issues, which can have a much greater impact on a relationship.
Cordelia was smart funny here as well. The moment when she thinks that Buffy staked Angel, the dust on the floor, was excellent, and her offhand comment to Doyle - "We had a cat that used to do that." were two of my favorites. Great acting from all players.😊
You say, in the outro, more or less, they have to move on. I just finished a book this morning wherein two sisters are saying goodbye, at the cemetery, following their mother's funeral - "The past is what you leave behind in life... " - "Nonsense. the past is what you take with you." and here, Buffy, who had no choice, again unknowingly, truly leaves the past behind, whilst Angel does indeed, take it with him. But there is perhaps a kindness here. Buffy is young and very devastated, as seen in her last minutes of remembering, whereas Angel, remembers many things. He carries a load forward, always. He will adjust to this, as he has to all his losses, and carry it with him, but maybe he will be able to look back at it fondly, not with regret, but as another time, where his life was perfect. Something which escapes almost everyone.😊

I've been really wanting to watch Buffy from the beginning (and perhaps coerce unsuspecting victims to watch with me 🤣) and I really feel I would see so many characters in new ways and appreciate them so much more from the beginning! Especially Cordelia!!

I think about a couple of things a lot lately. One, good memories of the past are more painful than bad ones. Because most of the memories of good things can never be again and I mourn for those times. With bad memories at least you can celebrate that those times are gone.
Secondly, everyone in life you care about will either leave or die at some point. Unless you die first, i suppose.
That's both true and sad at the same time. It kind of reminds me when I think of my loved ones, and pets. We all have to lose the ones we love and it hurts. But it's worth it to have had that love and those good times 💜

What a way to explore what everyone always thought they wanted and what the fantasy would be like. Wish granted. However, any major change to who they are and it just cant work. For them both to have moment was excellent. And for her not to remember was kind. No one can say that they didnt have the deepest love ever. Buffy would have been affected if she remembered and this love he could never have was his ultimate consequence. Now back to both of them being in service of others apart for their well being.
this is a great episode, yet so terrible for Angel, to be the only one to remember just how happy they could be together. it's kind of like it is for me and others watching your reactions, we love to see you experience each new twist and turn, but much like the sad moment when Oz left Willow, we know every tragedy to come, and like Angel, we can't (if we're good people) tell you. of course as was briefly mentioned in this episode, if Angel can stop every danger the powers that be see coming, he does get to be human again, so maybe...... love your reactions, and love your thoughts on what's happening, can't wait for the next one!
It would be incredible for Angel to be human again and to be able to live a mortal life with no complications... but if that is, say, in one or two or more years, surely it would be too late for him and Buffy as they'd probably both have moved on by then.... I really do think thay sadly they are destined to never be together which makes me so sad as I adore them both 😭
