How to run NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 series cards on Windows 8 and 8.1

  • Hi everyone,
    I finally figured it out!
Thanks to the people working on the Guru3D forum, I managed to get my RTX 3090 Ti successfully working on Windows 8.0, with the modded 474.30 windows 7 driver! This video shows you all how I did it, and it should work fine, whether you are on 8 or 8.1. If you are using 8.0 though (like I am), you have to use the zipped file, because for whatever reason they did not add the entries for the 30 series under the NT 6.2 section in the nv_dispi.inf file.
I know I talk a lot, but the tutorial starts at around 3:00.
NVIDIA should seriously be ashamed of themselves! There is absolutely NO reason why the windows 7 driver should not natively work with 8 or even 8.1. As a matter of fact, I noticed that if you do a driver search on NVIDIA's website, they literally have the exact same driver listed under two different names, one for up to the 10 series, and another for the 16, 20, and 30 series. For example, If you search on their website for the 1080 Ti driver for Windows 7 64 bit, and you choose the 474.11 driver, it shows up as "474.11-desktop-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql.exe, but for the 16 series and up, if you search for 7, it would be "474.11-desktop-windows7-64bit-international-whql.exe". Also, these drivers have the EXACT SAME SIZE and were released on the EXACT SAME DAY. Even on the page before you download the exe, for up to the 10 series, it should windows 7, 8, and 8.1. But on the 16 series and up, it just shows windows 7. Seriously, what kind of BS is that?! I would consider moving to an AMD gpu, but sadly NVIDIA still has faster GPUs. This is similar to NVIDIA making consumers think the GeForce 7 series is the last GPUs that will work on windows 2000, when in reality, you can use up to a GTX 480 on vanilla 2000, with the 258.96 driver, which is only listed as supported under XP. I used it with a GTX 460, and other than the HD audio driver causing a blue screen, it worked just fine when installing it through the device manager. Even dualview works, and the control panel is there. Only, what nvidia did here is worse, because they actively blocked it.

Thank you kind man, you just saved the day. It worked like a charm. I'm always archiving my old OS'es when I'm moving to new ones, leaving old as multi-boot just in case i need to use some of my old software/settings. And it's cool to able to do that not-in-1280x1024 lol.

Sorry to bother you, but since this video is fairly recent, thought you might kindly provide some light over the current problem I'm facing.
First of all, thanks a lot. Worked like a charm on 8.1.
Secondly, I'm facing an issue my poor tech savvy skills aren't able to fix :
Since that new 3080 is way more capable than my old r9 290s, figured I'd give it a try with a game I love. Turns out epic games and specifically their easy anti-cheat software won't allow the game to start due to disabled driver signature enforcement, that which won't turn back on for some mysterious reason.
Could it be the non signed version of the Nvidia drivers provided in the description?...
Tried all of them with clean installs each time, and nothing seems to be working, EAC won't allow the game to start.
To the best of your knowledge, would there be a workaround or something that might help?..
Thanks in advance, and thanks again, at least I can now run blender smoothly !

Hey, thanks for making this video, Elvis. I tried this out on Win 8.1 Pro by downloading the torrent file located in the Links section. I followed all of your steps, but found that I was unable to make it work for my GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU. It is not listed as a viable option when I load the driver. I am presented with choices of RTX 3050 and RTX 3060 Ti. When choosing either, both options result in an error message regarding not approved for this operating system. Is there any way you could send me the exact files you used to get this working? Thanks!

Running RTX 3090TI with windows 8, because windows 8 will not recognize the GPU.

My dell laptop from 2013 dualboots 7 and server 2016. I don't need 10, since I don't do anything that needs it, and people were very upset with Nvidia's incompetence, blocking 8 for no good reason. This was a test install, my main OS is 2008R2 Datacenter, but I know I would be upset if I were running 8 and it wasn't working for me full well knowing 7 users could use it without any workarounds. In fact, I have an 8.1 and even an 8.0 system in my house as well. They are not that bad other than the UI.

@@himmelskibet Thats not really a reason not to upgrade to a support device, winodws 8.1 and below is not getting security updates, patches, and bug fixes.
installing a modded driver on a unsupported OS with pretty bad exploits isn't a bright idea.
Just upgrade to windows 10, its quite literally free if you already have a license for windows 8.
its very poor practice to use operating systems that aren't supported. Once again, just because nothing you use requires it, isn't a excuse to not upgrade.
Installing 3rd partied unofficial drivers, is also a terrible idea. It could A: Brick your GPU B: Install malware or C: Just not work at all.

Man common, if you're running a 2000 series or more card please update to atleast windows 10, windows 7 / 8 / 8.1 are NOT getting importatnt security updates anymore. And they are not receiving support anymore. The longer you wait to upgrade, the more things will just start breaking down.
Its about time you upgraded, instead of doing a workaround that can cause issues.
And most anti cheats will also stop working as time goes on.
You have a free upgrade to windows 10. Use it before microsoft takes it away.
And they didn't decide to block it, they just don't to support a admittedly niece and very small OS. that is unsupported.
Also no no no no no no, never install modded drivers. They ALL run the risk of bricking your GPU, installing malware, or just not working. Its genially a risk you shouldn't take.

Since author of video uses WinSrv 2016 I'd assume he knows what he's doing and video just oversimplified his agenda. The same way I didn't want to describe here my entire setup, home lab network and how I'm not even running this OS on baremetal but it's inside VM in airgapped environment, just I happen to do VGA passthrough in hypervisor to get "baremetal experience" and I happen to only have 2x 3090 + Quadro RTX4000 in hypervisor. While win8 was running fine on Quadro I would rather reserve this GPU for my Linux VDI VMs (which I use as daily OS) for various reasons I'd need another 3 essays to explain XD For 32bit Windows XP I'm using separate baremetal box with gtx580 since it's not UEFI based and pci-e passthrough is more tricky with legacy BIOS virtualization. I think getting 3090 to work under Win XP 32bit can be classified as "lol u mad bro" so I didn't even try XD
