Thanks for sharing your story. I used to do in-home respite for a family, and the parents felt the same way about not giving up. I was a part of that family for many years while the child was in his early teens. He is now an adult, drives, has a job, and competes in tournaments for things he has always loved to do. Oh yea, also an only child here who doesn't know how to do anything the easy way haha! Thanks again for putting your story out there Bry!
Number one, great video Bry! Dude it takes guts to talk openly about tough subjects involving our kids and our own vulnerability. Number two, thank you for the shoutout. I greatly appreciate it. My goal in making my video was to help others who are dealing with Autism to know they are not alone. You and so many others reached out to me and that has meant a lot. I'm proud of you for making this video and for openly talking about difficult subjects that most folks won't. Great job my friend!
@@BryTheBiker rewatched this today and I’m still blown away by how good it is. It’s funny that my favorite videos to watch and my favorite ones I’ve made don’t get the views I think they should. But honesty and touchy subjects rarely do…
Bry. I have much respect for you. Sharing something so personal is hard to do. Thank you for having the courage and strength to talk about this and offering a helping hand. I hope that it helps others to share their stories.
I appreciate that! The goal of my channel is to try any remind others they are not alone. I hope in sharing this others can find they help they may need to build their village.
I have 5 kids and 2 of them are on the spectrum. One has aspergers and the other is moderate to medium autistic. Both were diagnosed young as they were speech delayed. My son didn't talk until he was 4. My daughter was older. My son is the oldest and is functional, has a job and can take care of himself, but my youngest is with us for the duration. My wife tends to take it personally, I don't so much. I accept them for who they are and it is what it is. The interesting thing is that there are people in both of our families that have or had autistic tendencies/behaviors, so it's no surprise to me. There must be some genetic component. Truth be told, I am mildly Aspergers too. I just never had speech or learning delays. Now my son is 25 and my daughter with autism will be 16 next month. My biggest worry is who will take care of my daughter when my wife and I are gone? My other kids say they will, but it's a worry. The other worry is that my two kids is that they aren't as aware of things socially or otherwise at times and I am worried for them in a world where people would take advantage of them. All of that said, they came from me, I love them and that's what matters. As long as I am here I will be there. I will say we've moved a couple times in their lives and it's been a challenge at times because you have to start over when you move and there's no family for support. Somehow we have made it so far.
@@BryTheBiker The hardest part is getting special ed services in schools, the IEP etc and then dealing with folks that don't get it in school and sometimes socially. Iowa had good to great schools, but they tended to track the kids into a dependency program, not independency. AZ doesn't have great schools, but you can push them more. In Iowa, they thought they did everything perfect. In NY, I am not sure. We moved when my son was in 1st grade. I would say the special ed there was better than Iowa or AZ, but I don't know what the outcome would have been. Jumping through the same hoops gets old. All I can say is that you just do it. I hope your son is doing well. Mine is probably in a similar place. Now it's just getting him totally on his own.
I've had my own struggles somewhat related to this and will continue to have those struggles. BUT I've come out of some difficult corners (to use riding parlance) in recent years and can now focus a little on myself and my issues that I've been neglecting. Getting back to riding is part of that healing in more ways than one.
I think riding can be a huge help in helping us find out center. But important to remember that it’s not a replacement for professional help if it’s needed
@@BryTheBiker Definitely agree with that latter point. It's not a cure all. I have multiple reasons for getting back to it that have nothing to do with the above mentioned issues. Dandanthefireman also addresses mental health issues, the Distinguished Gentlemen's Ride too. Both of which have my support.
