Not surprised by the fact that Iga dropped a set. Alexendrova beated Zheng Qinwen in the previous round. Her serves, returns, and powerful groundstrokes are very impressive. When I saw the highlights between she and Zheng, I knew Iga will have a tough match.

It was pretty telling that at the end of the match, at the net, Iga was more pissed off with herself for how badly she played (even though she won) than Alexandrova was with herself, even though she lost.
There were moments of brilliance from Iga - how she came back from behind in the first set and then how she got ahead in the second but then something broke and she was pretty bad for the rest of the second set and the tie break was just awful.
It reminded me of something she said a while ago, which was very true for her US Open run - a champion wins on a bad day, when everything is going against them.

Wow, that was surprisingly tough simply because Iga lost her focus in 2s. Haven't seen that for a while. To go from 5:2 to a tie-break that's something. Alexandrova really pushed her limits and got Iga out of her comfort zone. Nevertheless, Iga regained a composure just in the nick of time. Madrid seems to be full of surprises. Even Carlos was almost eliminated at the very beginning. The other thing is this ridiculous schedule. Why to create such a huge gap between day and evening session and ask women to play the last match of the day at 10pm? There is no need for that. They finished playing after 1am in the morning.. this is not a grand slam and it's not fair on players. Not to mention there were very few most dedicated fans present. Most people were just too tired and left. Organisers, get your act together!

Whoever made the schedule of play for these night session matches in Madrid deserves a medal... for stupidity. Two (!) consecutive best of three matches starting at 8 PM local time? Like seriously? Even if the first ended in straight sets, the winner of the second would be almost guaranteed to finish his/her one well past midnight, to say the least. True Iga could've ended matters much earlier and saved at least 1 hour, but that still doesn't explain the organizers' unwillingness to opt for earlier start, say at 7 PM. Luckily for her, she has a day off tomorrow!

It is not the first time Krejcikova lost to a random player. She is known for being inconsistent, I feel like she can play 2 good tournaments per season and that is it. I feel like people don't give Iga enough credit for being able to mentally reset and focus on the 3rd set. Yes, Iga shouldn't have lost that 5-2 lead, but it happened and it can feel quite demoralising after it does. I am sure there are many players that, if they were in Iga's position, would have just given up and gave the 3rd set to the opponent. It's really unfortunate how so many are based towards Iga. Either she wins the set because "she's great" or loses the set because "she played badly"
It's almost like her opponent doesn't exist. Alexandrova played amazing in the start of the first set and end of the second. But every set was "Iga this" and "Iga that" by the commentator and the comments.
I'm saying this as both an Iga and Alexandrova fan. No hate to either. Iga deserves credit, no doubt. Just sometimes I feel the opponent gets overshadowed.

I think the spot was on Iga in the first and half of the second sets, purely because she was in better form and that's what you want to analyse. Then the attention of commentators shifted to Alexandrova when she started playing amazing tennis. She was good from the start, but middle of second set, she simply went crazy good with her balls hitting precisely where it was hard for Iga to receive. Didn't really feel the bias of the commentators, apart from the obvious 'she is the number 1, currently' reason.

@CA-Premium No. Alexandrova used the drop shot, maybe twice in the whole match, so you could say that she also "lacks variety". I'm not suggesting Iga changes her style of playing because if it works there's no need to change it. Winning matches is the most important thing and that's what Iga does. However, an occasional drop shot could surprise her opponents and win her important points. And we know Iga can play amazing drop shots - her drop shot from 2019 earned her the WTA Shot of the Year award.

If Alexandrova had guts and skill to come to the net to finish points, she could have won IMO. Instead, most choose to out shoot/out play Swiatek, which is not a good idea for most. Navratilova built her game around the volley and was so successful. Or try using the drop shot more, introduce an element of surprise.

she was superb for a time - but for me it felt like she was red lining (acing like isner). rarely players can do for more than a part of the match. Igas game is more sustainable. Plus she had a few more levels to access if she had to (she was far from 100%)

That was nearly the biggest choke of Iga’s career, but credit to her for resetting mentally in the third set. She gets a day off too, which is nice considering the match didn’t finish till after 1 am.

She usually goes to bed early, so late night match is a challenge for her. She lost focus and energy in crucial moments of second set. Matches like this one shouldn't be scheduled that late.

these players gotta start chasing every ball if they want to beat the likes of Iga and Alcaraz... its what makes them good.. not skills but the will to chase every ball thrown in their side of court

Great fight by Alexandrova. She in this match showed to us how much mentally she have matured in the last 2 years. What a fight from her. Although she lost this match, she played better than almost every single top 10 player. Iga Swiatek needed to toughen up to win this match. Both in fact played great. This match was Iga's to win, but it wasn't that easy for her. The way how Alexandrova won the second set from 2:5 down and facing the match point on her serve was unreal. In the end Alexandrova simply ran out of steam allowing Iga Swiatek to win this match. Great fight by both and Iga Swiatek deserves this win. She simply was bit better than Alexandrova in the end. Congratulations Iga Swiatek. Go pulverize Petra Martic.
