    I wasn't surprised by this at all. In high school, junior year I switched to a higher quality mouthpiece on my student instrument and the difference was absolutely tremendous.

    Even with a crappy mouthpiece the quality of the Selmer shines through.
    Would have been interesting to change mouthpieces in comparsison. The budget horn with Pro mouthpiece seems a good Budget solution.

      The cheap sax sounds a little more rich though. The selmer is very good even with that though

    I always like to tell my students:
    Approximately 60% of your sound comes from you, 25% of your sound comes from your mouthpiece, ligature, and reed combination, and the last 15% is the saxophone you're playing on. Love the NASA shirt by the way!

    Those Sakkusu saxophones can really play. I borrowed my son’s for a gig when my mkvi was being worked on and it was fine. Different world from student instruments 30 years ago.

    Another thing about setting a student up with a pro mouthpieces early is that they can keep the mouthpiece while they move up through the intermediate and pro level horns. That lets them feel the difference that the horn makes without having to adapt to a new mouthpiece as well.

    And even more important than either the mouthpiece or the sax is what happens in your vocal tract. Basically, the closer something is to your lungs the more influence it has on your tone. Great vid, thanks Jim! 👍🏻

    Interesting and enjoyable video. I’d like to see a video where you take the student, intermediate, and pro model of any one brand and tell what you gain, what’s the difference in each sax as you move up. Always enjoy your playing.

    Confirms my philosophy. I run a Sakkusu tenor (s/h eBay £350) with a Jody Jazz HR* piece and it's great. I have an Eastar alto which cost £180 NEW. With a Better Sax Burnin piece, it's great. My (top drawer) tech was hugely impressed by both. The other advantage is if you're a gear geek of modest means you can collect or swap between mouthpieces for a couple of hundred - you'd need deep pockets to be similarly promiscuous with saxes.

      Set Up let's beginner GAS right away AND it's money well spent. MP and reed improvement extremely upgrades a cheaper saxophone result.

    The closer the instrument is to your mouth, the more important it is to your tone. The mouthpiece is way more important than the horn and your video proves it. Silver or gold plate the neck and you’ll hear a difference as well bc it’s so close to the mouth. Silver or gold plate the bell and I bet you won’t hear a difference!

    If the student sax is in good working condition, a quality, balanced mouthpiece will outplay a pro sax with a disposable mouthpiece every time.

    Was the ligature the same on both horns? The lig also makes a big difference.

      It looks the same when I jumped between them

    • @camthesaxman3387
      @camthesaxman3387 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The ligature makes NO difference in sound. As long as it holds the reed to the mouthpiece, it will sound identical to any other ligature that holds the reed to the mouthpiece. And unfortunately, some really expensive ligatures do a rather poor job of holding the reed to the mouthpiece.

    I’m definitely not sure what you pay for buying an expensive mouthpiece. May be some players think that there is a relationship between price and quality. I think the cheap beginner mouthpieces are coming with a small tip opening because it’s easier to play on by beginners..

    How it feels is almost as important as how it sounds.
    If it is comfortable to play it frees you to use a wide range of timbres.
    The further from your brain the less it matters.
    1st you have to know the sound you want to make and then there's the air, the oral cavity the emboucher...all absolutely essential to have sorted!
    Next reed mouthpiece ligature..HUGELY important.
    Then the neck.
    By the time you get to the actual horn, prolly 75% of your game is set....of course that last 25% isnt trivial...but focus head air cavity embouchure reed mouthpiece lig....thats where you get the biggest payoff.

    The difference between the Selmer & the Sakkusu, when using the Meyer mp was negligible! Whereas the difference when using the cheap mp was stark.

    I've never really understood why the precise (down to fractions of a millimetre) dimensions of very expensive mouthpieces couldn't be very easily and cheaply duplicated by today's computer-controlled manufacturing systems. The same goes for flute headjoints costing thousands of pounds. Why do beginner saxes have to come with such rubbish mouthpieces? What am I missing? Is it down to the materials used?

    • @ioplm4862
      @ioplm4862 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can be duplicated by machine, namely CNC machines. A few drawbacks with this, metal only and its still expensive cause CNC machines cost a ton.
      They did this with Guardala mouthpieces for a while, they're like 300$ or something?

    • @TheSaxyG
