    Mr Sivalorsax, I'm a very new beginner sax player. 99% of your videos are right over my head, for now but your style, explanation, and you clear honesty makes you a mentor i can trust. I'm a long way off buying mouth pieces. but watching stuff likes this keeps me educated for when it's time. Thank you for all your hard work.

      I'd say make sure that you have a decent starter mouthpiece like a Yamaha 4C or a Rico. I makes a huge difference.

    I returned two Yibuy tenor mouthpieces to Amazon. The first was marked 6, but had a tip opening of only 0.075". The second (and last for me) was marked 8. One rail had a facing that measured 11mm and the other measured 28mm. 🤪

    Hey Sir Valor. I hope u read this as it’s very touching and I don’t know if you happen to save kids lives on the regular, but if not I really hope u will stick around to read this. As this is tithe real life honest to god story of how I succumbed to not only drug addiction but severe depression and many horrific acts just to get by each day. Until for some reason I stumbled across your AMAZING You tube channel. get this. Some would say it’s all coincidence, but I don’t know man. I FULL heartedly believe that had I not stumbled across ur amazing free saxophone lessons, etc. this past year or two, I would 100% be six feet deep with a beautiful family absolutely crushed and ruined for life. No one likes to read novels so I’ll keep it as short as possible. Ya see I was always very gifted in music and arts and found myself on a scholarship to get to go to Coastal Carolina University. It was fun but a little too fun. And then one day I fell slipping two discs in my neck. As well as dislocatng my shoulder. Well long story short, I was succumbed to two major surgeries which of course being only the year 2000, Drs were very liberal when handing out boat loads of OxyContin, percosets, ets. Well as I sure you can guess what soon after happened. That’s right I was a full blown addict to to the stuff that Bayer pharmaceuticals claimed are 100 percent not habit forming. Funny right. Because unfortunately for me it wasn’t .long at all after that when I I subjected a llife long devoted to stealing, prostitution, absolutely everything that I was raised against. God had been lost from my heart, just to throw him anwhere so long as I could get my fix. One thing led to another. And eventually money becomes obsolete. So at that point I had no other choic but to ( I’m sorry Sir for saying this, that’s right , I had to sell myself in every whichgod awful way just to be able to afford the drugs that the dr soon after cut me off cold turkey despite him being so adamant that oozy contin was a healthy new drug. So healthy, I had to perform sexuall acts just to get enough dope to keep me alive. Again, I really am only telling u this because. I know that if it weren’t for you and your ever so positive videos, I would’ve unfortunately not have made it thus far. But today I’m going to keep reminding myself of everything that I have to live for .
    Like the saxophone that I absolutely loved I ABSOLUTELY 100 percent know that you saved my life MR Valor. I had started watching all you videos daily and I just hope that some day I know it won’t be this year or next year but I just pray that someday I’ll be able to get back the two Selmer SA80 series II that I ended up pawning for. Well maybe for now just a student one. Any good price tenors that you could perhaps please recommend. You don’t want to even know. In fact I will begin to cry again for the second time during typing this. I know it’s often impossible to know who are you may have touched just from your day-to-day activities. But I can’t even use that word touch for me, because you Sir, you didn’t just Touch me with a little bit of motivation. No sir you didn’t you won110% saved my life. I have now I’ve been clean and sober from everything addictive substance fair almost 2 years now. And then the beginning I I felt no desire to continue on living. You sir are an inspiration to me and as I tear up one more time, in the bottom of my heart I want to thank you more than you’ll ever ever know. I don’t have much to give but I will absolutely be donating to your fund me page. I just hope someday I’ll be able to play a saxophone again granted i’m sure two black lacquered Selmers are way outta the question LOL. but I don’t care what it is. So long as unable to hopefully buy myself a decent saxophone sometime soon so I can continue to stay positive and keep the faith that I receive everyday single day for you. Sir Valor I know everyone knows of you as the best saxophoneist on the tube. But not me. For some reason I look at you as some sort of the holy power because I can’t tell you how close I was to calling it a wrap and ending it all. yetcan get my hands on anything just to keep the faith I will be happy and I will r I had started watching about 6 -months ago rbut it’ll all make sense in the end Can just get through with a tit bit of housekeeping. I’ve been an all state and all regional saxophone player back when I was in high school which was from 1994-2000. Just imagine what it’s like having your skill but not being able to play anymore because you foolishly ponder instruments for drugs. I apologize for writing so much and I’m sure I’ve been all over the place so I just hope you understand I’m coming from and I wanted to give you all the praise in the world as you 100% save my life and you’ve given me my family back. I honestly feel like I could say I love you just because of what you’ve given me

    I bought the Tenor, Alto and soprano Yibuy silver mouthpieces from amazon that have the two rings on the outside of the shank. All three mouthpieces came with a plastic bag placed over the mouthpiece with the leather ligature over the bag then the black plastic cover. None of the mouthpieces had any discoloration and the ligature didn't smell funny and they fit great. The black protective cover didn't fit well so I lowered the open end of each cap into boiling water for 15 seconds and placed a towel around the open end and squeezed the cap to a smaller diameter and the caps fit great now. I have played woodwinds since I was 6 years old and I'm 66 now. I play P. Mauriat Le Bravo 200 Tenor, Yamaha 62 III Alto, Selmer Mark VI Soprano and Buffet R13 Bb clarinet. All three mouthpieces fit my sax's and played great. Sirvalorsax I love your videos and your reviews and pointers are great.

    Once again, your explanation of things are the best I’ve heard of “ why” things work, or don’t. Here’s a thought, could you take a mouthpiece like that, one that kinda accidentally suits you, and have it replicated in a 3D printing process to eliminate the unknown materials ? This way you always have the original Incase of loss or theft and could replicate a favorite at will? I’m with you on the material concerns.!

    I just bought the Yibuy "Rose Gold Plated" version for $32 and it blows wonderfully! It's the #9 but it's only about a .090-.095" tip opening. I didn't get as nice a box but it came with a great ligature and cap and it looks exactly like yours except it has a "rose gold" (I'm guessing Copper alloy, it's very red) plating. It plays so well I ordered an alto and soprano - hope they play as well as this one!

    Hi Adriene , as always ..another great review .. you always sound fantastic..
    FIRST AND FORMOST : Since 1989 I have been advising players not to play on a un-plated metal mouthpiece. A raw metal mouthpiece most likely contains Zinc, Copper, Lead, Nickle, Tin Antimony (tin base) and silicon.
    RE : REPLATING CHINESE MOUTHPIECES:
    Anderson plating is one of the finest plating operations for musical instruments in the United States. Based on increase weight of your mouthpiece from raw to finished .66 I would say that this increase represents mostly the nicked and other heavy metals that applied prior to gold being plated. The amount of gold applied is 1/1000 of an inch.
    Your piece was plated with pure gold that is in a liquid form inside a large plating tank. The process is known in the industry as "HGE" or heavy gold electro plating and probably has about a fair amount of "real" gold on the piece. From day one (1988) unlike other makers who use "flash gold: we've only used pure gold for long life and durability
    Most Chinese plated pieces I have tested have 2-3 mils of gold plating. NOTE: gold per ounce today is $1902.00 oz.. At the price of $180 to plate the piece I would ask Anderson how many mils of gold were applied. BTW if you ever need a few pieces HGE plated please send them to me .. happy to do a few gratis...as we are plating weekly 30-48a pieces.
    RE: PLAYING BETTER:
    Adriene, as I recall you or one of your subscribers mentioned "why not import the raw pieces and then have them plated" . Well don't be shocked because that's exactly what several other US makers actually do. In fact I've been with the plater and seen racks of Chinese mouthpieces with the black bite plate on a raw piece being plated. (plated does not like this)
    Anyway, with regard to getting the piece to play better : you had the right idea to use some wet/dry sandpaper. However, you should have sanded the piece prior to sending it out to Anderson. You will find swiping the piece (from north to sound) in one swipe(s) (not back and forth) will remove excess burs and bring out the dimensions of the table.
    RE: NOTE:
    I think most makers will agree no matter what the material is once you have the right "dimensions" on the table and the curve is in "synch" with the tip opening of the mouthpiece that mouthpiece will play well. This brings us to the topic of 3d printed mouthpieces you mentioned in the video.
    RE: 3D PRINTED MOUTHPIECES
    The big concern with regard to 3d printed mouthpieces is they do not seal ..The fact is the layering of the filiment by the 3d Printer on the table is not 110% flat. ..as you would see in a CNC machined piece. The actual results of a" non-seal".. is this is the nature of the beast!. ..but does not mean the piece will not play great.
    RE: FACINGS;
    Our facings either the CNC , Steel molds (TAMS) , or 3D printed are created in a CAD program known as Solidworks. The program allows for unlimited adjustments in the table and tip as well as inside the baffle...and design.

    RE: UP DATE INFO
    In the event you do decide to do a review of 3D printed mouthpieces we would be delighted to send you a few pieces to compare to competitors brand . You have in the past been both brutally honest and complimentary . Most importantly show no favoritism.
    RE: THAT BEING SAID
    As you may know we have replicated our MB I and MB II both with a bite plate and without a bite plate in 3d prints..
    The KW I and KW II ..also are available with the bite plate and with out a bite plate.
    I have also created three NEW ALTO models Super Classic I and II and a MB II (mini-alto Guardala version with my own "snow-hill baffle" .
    For SOPRANO I re-created in 3D the Super Lieb I (no b.p and with a b.p )
    For BARITONE a 3D printed NB I and II ..all come with a bite plate and without ..
    ::.in addition..Italian saxophonist extradinoaire
    Stefano Bedetti has asked me to make a model for him : called the
    SB (Stefefano Bedetti " RETRO" .. : here's a animated promo :
    th-cam.com/video/uakk56wyfT4/w-d-xo.html
    In the recording Stefano uses our :YETI" .. the RETRO is an upgrade . (I made it a little brighter) .. ..or visit youtube : Sugal Sefano Bedetti.
    Finally, Over the next few days I will continue updating our web site with more info : as obviously I've been very busy creating some killing models and now have over 250 stl 3d files..- anyone interested can easily reach me at : 401 434 7982 .. : www.sugalmouthpieces.net
    Stay Safe and GOD BLESS all Gary

    love them
    so glad I didn't spend $200+ each
    I bought 3 tenor only 1 was flawed a dent in one of the rails the other 2or golden
    I bought 2 alto and received 1 so far its killer for me love it
    they are so cheap and take a while to get to you so I highly suggest that you buy them 2 at a time just in case one is flawed but either way nothing to lose but time

    Totally agree with your point about ocean going cruise ships. On the cost and at sea, the corrosive properties of salt water, wind and a naturally occurring chemical called dimethyl sulphide (known as DMS, often mistaken for ozone) will destroy metals even stainless steel. Check out the state of bare metal on the ships. DMS in high concentrations can be bad for your mucous membranes, but you'd have to have a pretty high exposure. A long time ago, I was asked to go see how ATM's in coastal towns with stainless steel fascias were literally rotting away - so I know this for a fact! I've a lot of respect for your open-minded attitude when you test out these low-cost mouthpieces. There's way too much snobbery and an elite culture in sax circles elsewhere. Excellent video, once again!

    Brilliant video. Your altissimo vids are the best I've found too. I bought the same mouthpiece after seeing you play it but didn't try it for fear of what was in it. I played it for 2 mins before a gig and wow.. I knew I had to plate it. A local shop here that plates everything will do it cheap with a very thick layer of silver. They do gold also. Should I have the silver then the gold or is silver enough? Doers silver plating sound different to silver/gold? Also.. are you concerned what the bite plate is made out of?

    Thank you for your reply. I hope you will have your video on the subtone out soon as I do not have very much longer to be around. I have been trying on and off for some ten years to be able to produce this most beautiful, expressive sound but as my lower jaw cannot retract even by a fraction of a millimeter the subtone could possibly be beyond my ability. With reference to the tenor mouthpiece you reviewed, I could be wrong but the piece appears to be of the medium chamber type rather than small chamber type. I am most certainly not a physicist but have been and presently am engaged in making mouthpieces for individuals who wish to have something of their own design. I am a qualified classical pianist but have picked up wood wind instruments as I have been engaged in refurbishing these for more than fifty three years. I currently own and use a Keilwerth Angel Wing tenor and alto and a Conn tenor. The subtone I consider to be the ultimate for an aficionado of the forties and fifties sound. Though I have made and make all types of mouthpieces, my personal all time favorite is the vintage Conn Eagle large chamber , narrow tip opening and do consider this cannot be bettered for the type of sound I refer to. I shall be looking forward to your video on the subtone and its production on tenor and alto and all the very best in all things to you.Thank you.

    Thank you very much for your extended reviews and opinions. With respect, I am still unsure of what your verdict is. Are you suggesting that
    (1). It is worth paying for a cheap one, and get a customized? or (2). It isn't worth the bother as you have had a few of the cheap and nasty ones?
    Regarding the cheap jeans from Walmart and the designer ones. You want to wear the expensive one with the tag on the outside, while you wouldn't want to have Walmart plastered all over your cheap jeans. That is why some people chose the designer gear for the tag on the outside. People could be silly like that.

    Shame I'm late on this but thanks for doing this stuff in a nice digestible way. Anyway, I have some Chinese metal mouthpieces and from what I can see they are copying Berg Larsen Bullets and Lawton Bronzes, both of which have that V-shape at the baffle step and, I think I've seen a Meyer copy. Obviously no problem with that from a user point of view as those pieces are exceptional. I have some English made vintage Lawtons and Larsens to compare. And I have some British made metal Brilharts. All from the 1970s when I was a young sax player! I'm in the UK.

    Very cool! I had a question about the ramps at the bottom of the mouthpiece by the table. Do you think that mouthpieces with more of an aggressive ramp play better? I'e noticed that some of the more expensive mouthpieces like the Theo pieces have very thin ramp areas.

    • @Sirvalorsax
      @Sirvalorsax  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are a lot of factors that compliment each other so I can't say on just the ramp alone BUT....( I frequently call this an inside chin area in my videos) I have noticed that the higher the wall is, the brighter the mouthpiece. This one is tapered.

    I purchased a Jody Jazz Jet mouthpiece and I bought the five and the seven tip openings for this mouthpiece… I love the comparison that you have playing the mouthpiece on a number 3 reed strength, but I couldn't get any sound out of it on the upper registers I was squealing all over the place so I took my saxophone in for an overhaul pay $300 for the overhaul and put the Jody Jazz mouthpiece back onto the instrument and I still was squealing in the upper registers. So I was thinking was it a bad mouthpiece or bad player… So I place my Yamaha 6C mouthpiece into the instrument and everything was perfect especially in the upper registers… What is up with that? Instead of returning the mouthpieces I decided to keep them and wanted to chat with other saxophone players and get their opinion about that because it's really weird that a $40 mouthpiece compared to a $200 mouthpiece is not playable especially when people say that it is easy to play and I can't hit upper registers on it even changing the size strength of the reeds and using different ligatures and I still cannot produce that beautiful sound when playing high notes? The reeds, ligatures, and unwanted repair cost more than the mouthpiece. I would like your opinion on that. Thanks.🎷

    • @Sirvalorsax
      @Sirvalorsax  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually changing reed brands or reed strength can fix these issues but I think in your case, it has to do with the design of the mouthpieces. There isn't enough emphasis put on facing curve when looking for a mouthpiece. Jody Espina mouthpieces are known for being free blowing so they can feel easier to play or maybe too easy so you should go up a size or 2 when choosing them. A long facing curve will feel more resistant and a short facing curve will feel less resistant. I would have a friend play the expensive ones to make sure they aren't defective. I hope this helps

    Unrelated alto question, but what should I be thinking about doing with my embouchure when playing low notes?
    I can play the upper octave with minimal effort, even without the octave key, but the lower octave keeping jumping up when I get down to concert G. The lower concert Bb is the lowest note I'm solid with, so I've been doing long tones going lower from there, but was wondering if there's something fundamentally wrong with my embouchure since I'm more familiar with low brass.

    • @alice_atari
      @alice_atari 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It sounds to me like you're putting too much pressure into it and biting on the reed. To play low notes you need a relaxed embouchure and less extreme pressure. You are overblowing the notes up an octave, basically.
      Alto tends to be difficult at the very bottom end of the range, the so called "bell tones" below bottom D. They are harder to control and tend to be tubby and loud until you develop a good embouchure.
      Also make sure your sax is in good repair, but considering you issue I think it's just development of embouchure and control. Start with a soft reed, a 1.5 or 2, and loosen up.

    • @Sirvalorsax
      @Sirvalorsax  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with adamatari on this one. I would make sure there are no leaks also (SUPER IMPORTANT). Try different reeds to see if the problem persists

    • @nickscott4272
      @nickscott4272 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Make sure your neck octave key has a slight separation from the actuation rod, it might be getting slightly blow open. Also, Check your G sharp touch key stopper. When you mash down on b or b flat, you need to have a little gap on the g sharp touch key so you can press down a little more. Also, check your bridge, your low C, C sharp, B, and B flat pads, also check your e flat key, and check the regulation of all the normal touch keys. You can get a leak light for a few bucks from amazon.

    • @Cysubtor_8vb
      @Cysubtor_8vb 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for all the replies! I don't believe it's a leak as I can occasionally hit low notes, just not consistently at all below concert Bb. Looked the sax over and did a quick long tone drill to eventually reach a low concert Eb (or transposed C) and, after changing the angle of the mouthpiece, even a rough low concert Db (transposed Bb). I am new to not only sax but woodwinds in general, however, so I'm more familiar with playing low brass from tuba to alto trombone. Therefore, I'm new to the single reed embouchure and was wondering if there's a specific position I should be using for low notes as I'm using a soft 1.5 reed and is putting as little pressure with as warm air (in terms of speed; slower/"warm" air for low notes) as possible.
      Similarly, would this potentially be a sign that I would have issues playing bari sax in the future? Or would the size of the instrument emphasize low end more with the proper embouchure?

    • @nickscott4272
      @nickscott4272 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great review. It is true the Chinese mouthpiece have a bad rep. But do you have access to what USA an European made mouthpices are made from? I do not mean the fancy Bell Brass and German Hard Rubber marketing names. What is actually in ithere? Where do they actually get there brass from? Also the numeous resins, molded plastics (PFAS) and undefined 3D materials. What are they really made of? I am not convinced yet that they are all that healthy and any better than the Chinese made mouthpiece. And let's face it: brass is brass. One more toxic than the other. But still toxic. Wether from the US, Europe or China. It is just not healthy to stick any bare brass in your mouth. And this is coming from guy who played an old bare brass Link for years. Luckily I am still around and alive and kicking.

    • @Sirvalorsax
      @Sirvalorsax  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brass can vary greatly depending on how much of one metal is mixed in vs another. Copper and Zinc and other metals such as lead, tin, iron, aluminum, silicon, and manganese. If the lower cost "brass" has cheaper metals mixed in in greater proportions it could explain the wide variety of brass quality.
