Things to add to the Rich Evans Compendium. -Plays games with the sound turned down -Has high tolerance to anime -Ocassionaly dresses like an extra from Scrubs
"Has high tolerance to anime" Is that really something you need to tolerate, I never cared one way or the other (except if it's something that has to push in a panty shots or under angle skirt shots every five minutes, I can't tolerate that but wouldn't we able to if they decided to do that stuff in Pixar animations either).
Playing games are harder than watching movies that's why they thought it's not worth it to review games regularly as there weren't enough views but if rich and Jack ever happen to play the same game, they should review it on this channel. They could still livestream gameplay here. Who cares about views.
Why would you miss rich? He is almost always in this channel called redlettermedia, ever heard of it? but yeah i agree with you, jack and yathzee is way worse.
I'm sad this went away. The last video is 2 years old and they still have over 100K subs. I probably disagreed with half their opinions on games, and I still loved watching. I was still fully engaged with them and was interested in their perspectives. Not many youtubers can achieve that.
It's very, very sad that they ended this. I think a comeback of this show would get a great reception now that so many more people have discovered and fallen in love with it.
Reccetear is a 10 year old indie Japanese PC game, it was a very, very different place to 10yo console games. Also an interesting thing, I find Reccetear's Shop music so much better than Moonlighters, it may be a short loop, but it's sweet enough and fits the JRPG item shop vibe, whereas Moonlighter's is just really iritating and feels more like a little side-quest village than a shop. Given this is the main environment of both games it's really important to get the music right.
Moonlighter should have had a mechanic where you have to use the items you collect from the dungeon as materials or ingredients to craft the items that you sell. That way, you would have to figure out the value of the things you collect based on what can be made from them. And then have the items fluctuate in value based on consumer demand so you have to actually play the game and can't just look up a guide to see what items make the most money. That way, when you see the demand for a particular item go up, it motivates you to explore different parts of the dungeons and fight tougher enemies in search for the materials to make that item. Then you can raise money to unlock more crafting skills or stations, or even hire other people to make them, so you can make even more valuable items to sell. Here's another idea: you want to take a lot of items with you into the dungeon on the off chance you will encounter an adventurer who's desperate to buy some health potions, so you can sell them for a lot more than what you could in the normal store.
I love how Rich was playing Recettear all the way back in 2007 and then when they watched the SOS music video he was completely unable to recognize the singing as being in japanese
The decisions behind Moonlighter makes sense if you imagine that they had a decent dungeon crawler, but they needed a Unique Selling Point. So they just slap on the item shop part and now it sticks out a bit from the hundreds of crawlers that are on the market.
i'm sure he'll say he isn't bothered with how bad it looks, it's just clothes. maybe one day he'll lose some more weight and start feeling good about himself.
This seems like a management simulation style that is under served. Making niche games for potion creation, smithing, magic items, and competition with other shops in the area are all avenues for growth. There is also the idea that instead of running a shop you are running a market, attempting to run out rival businesses, take over more stalls, and ultimately take control of some local guild or union seems like a place to grow the story outside of BS personal drama.
Before you rag on its audio visuals too much, keep in mind most Japanese indie games have no external funding at all. They're usually games made in people's spare time with whatever pocket change they got.

Lurdiak it's not an excuse but it is an explanation. I think it's also something that needs to be taken into account when you are directly comparing it to Moonlighter, a game that got funding through Kickstarter.
its not really bad music aside from the stock music effects it has (which probably makes up 30-50% of the game's library) its just really plain, and it gets stale so goddamn fast specially for someone like me who grinds a lot on a single map and youre stuck with it for the whole time though some parts of the game does have good music the main theme doesnt get old for me
Lurdiak How is it not? Little to no budget means they cant hire someone who is good at making music nor buy music so they either have to use stock music or make it them-self and if they are not good at making music then the music wont be good
@ 33:17 The bubble that displays the price is always *her* thought-bubble. When it says "How much should I...?" or "How much should I pay?", regardless of the color it's not the customer talking but always her. Thus, when the bubble says "How much should I *PAY*?", it's money you're going to spend, not receive. I guess the bubble that says "How much should I...?" expects you to fill in "...demand?".
I think he already had it. He was talking about getting sweet shirts in the Recettear stream, but they had previously recorded this episode before that stream.
Nah, I just entered endless mode to do more dungeons, and while Tear is business-first, its clear the Recette really cares about people. What you have suggested would be inconsistent with the rest of the game's tone. Her asking if the adventurer is alright is more than just cynical insurance of an investment.
The problem is she does this EVERY TIME you get hit, its kinda grading after a few minutes already. Thus making it also a huge problem of the sound-design. Its sad, that this really interesting concept wasn't done more often yet.
I liked recatear when I originally played it and yes the dungeon stuff is a bit slow and I can see how people could dislike the aesthetics I also think the anime aesthetic does a good job of creating a nice juxtaposition between the potential darker elements of the story and the light hearted tone.
I'm glad you guys are back to good old-fashioned reviewing. This episode makes me want to revisit Recettear, try Moonlighter, and then formulate the perfect item shop game in my head that will never happen. AH GOD I FORGOT TO MEME
I imagine the perfect shop based game involving a shopkeeper player character like Tom Nook. Sell basic items at a huge markup, have a collection of furniture with occasional knickknacks to sell off, and hold claim to all of the steadily growing mortgages that the townsfolk have.
I think the perfect item shop game would axe the dungeon crawling entirely, and just let you get your merchandise from the town's artisans and adventurers.
You do need some difference in kind between gameplay styles, but it is true thaty dungeon-crawling is generally too long-winded an experience. I think a Weapon Shop de Omasse style would be best, where you send someone off on an adventure but how they do is reported back to you via basically a twitterfeed; you still need to choose the right adventurers to hire for a task and make sure they have good equipment and plenty of healing items, but without the long times away. Whereas some sort of alchemy or crafting mini-game would let you do something else for a little bit while your time is still focused on running the shop.
I think the perfect "dungeon crawling" in a game like this would be something with a strategy element instead of direct combat, like you're financing/guiding expeditions to places but not actually going there yourself, acting like a quest giver rather than a shitty wannabe adventurer
3:55 there is a hint , if you look at the first page and the last page of the book of each dungeon you can see the gold at the top of the book and the bottom of the book. at least that gives you a clue the top item's worth and the bottom item's worth
--'{@ Recettear dungeons Are for unlocking heroes And item entries. As for the controls, It was the default settings For Japanese games. And decorations Help unlock new characters And sell for a ton.
Well, there's a pretty big difference between turn-based RPGs and action RPGs. Something like Secret of Mana would probably be more up his alley than Final Fantasy.
I remembered that i did this about 10 to 15 years ago too, but nowadays soundtracks, sound-effects and atmosphere in games is such a big part of playing them, that it is rarely the case anymore.
Glad you guys liked Recettear. I played it a ton when it came out. I had actually forgotten it was the first Japanese Indie on Steam. I wish they would remake and port it to some modern consoles for people to play again. Just found your gaming channel. This video was really informative.
i know it's a nitpick but the old man does explain a lot of the lore, he explains that the shop belonged to will's grandfather and how his parents died and why the dungeons got closed there is also a little price fluctuation , you can jack up the price slightly if the product is loved , but doing it too much makes people hate the product and it means they won't buy it for the normal price either (tho if you just sell the prooduct at the normal price you don't have to worry about it so it's kind of a waste ), there is also lore to each floor that is discovered from item descriptions
A few things they don't mention: Moonlighter has the advantage of being available on some consoles and handhelds, and with dungeon crawlers of that style, it really helps to be able to play a single floor in handheld every now and then, or just to be able to watch TV or a video (like best of the worst) while playing. Recettear sadly is only available on pc, to my knowledge, which makes the dungeons that much more painful. That said, Recettear's dungeons have bosses which are not as terrible as the dungeons themselves, additionally items from dungeons can be used in the game's crafting system. But most importantly, clearing those dungeon bosses also advances the story for the secondary characters, and unlocks more characters to visit your shop, or hire as an adventurer. If Recettear gets a switch rerelease, I'd buy it in an instant. Also: I think the 'C' in the title is soft, because the title is a combination of the character names Recette and Tear.
As soon as I saw the graphical style I knew what kind of game it would be. Dungeon focused, no heart, no soul. It's sad when you can judge a book by its cover and be right. 20:35 250% actually.
if you guys haven't played A Robot Named Fight, it's on steam and it's basically a metroidvania binding of isaac. it's very polished, very tight controls, really nice detailed snes-style sprite art. it has the isaac thing of more and more stuff unlocking across playthroughs (whether you complete them or not) and it's just generally really fun and nicely executed. I bought it cause I thought the name was cute but it's actually fantastic. I was playing dead cells heavily at the time and Robot Named Fight was good enough to drag me away from it.
So I was on the rlm merch store and was shocked to see there was no rich evans dakimakura cover. Any idea on when that will be a thing. There is much demand.
>10 year old game, menu on L1 Its not only 10 year old, its a JAPANESE doujin game, which mean it will be always hostile to us. Half of these games I played had "instant close without save" function binded on Esc. Its like entire different culture, because its so common to japanese games.
Well, Moonlighter sure seems to have excellent music. Also it's pronounced "Ressettear". The Characters name is Recette and you can hear them pronounce the name, and the fairys name is Tear. The shopname is an amlgamation of both names. So no hard K sound in there. The grinding in Recettear is a japanese thing. Grindy is what they do. I so much didn't mind the anime stuff in there so much, found it charming most of the time. Although the sfx can get on your nerves sometimes.
In regards to the controls and settings and such in Recettear, that's specifically a Japanese game thing. If you've played a lot of Japanese indie games, that's a really common design to how the software is programmed, especially older Japanese indie games. A lot of these games are made in things like RPG maker, game maker, fighter maker, etc prebuilt game design engines that were designed in a specific way and it just became the standard for how things were made, it's what they got used to. It's weird to us, but it's the style of the region it comes from.
I dunno if falcom makes their game in such an engine, but its certainly the case that their games have a launcher built in for the config. I'm playing trails in the sky recently and that was the first thing i looked over before playing. It is a habit with their games for me at this point.
Not anymore. Sorry but i'm tired of this praise for ever other indie game. Don't get me wrong i like many of them, might even be the biggest part in my steam library, BUT its such a common theme among those games to have amazing music and art-design and just lack literally everything else worth making them even PLAYING in the first place. Jotun and Sundered are very good examples of this as well. It feels like its the same as with triple a everything gets put into the visuals and the actual game part is just left barren.
Things to add to the Rich Evans Compendium.
-Plays games with the sound turned down
-Has high tolerance to anime
-Ocassionaly dresses like an extra from Scrubs
Extra? Nah, Scrubs has no extras. Just a lot of characters that wind up having episodes when they need to make more shit to throw on the screen.
"tolerance to anime"

Anime belongs in the trash
Moonlighter's music gets grating very fast. Longer more atmospheric sounds would serve it far better than its heavyhanded melodies 1-minute loops.

Yes. Then they can review my favorite anime, Taimanin Asagi. It has all the best qualities of any media.

I would 100% support a game that combines good shop keeping with good dungeroneering.
So, a game about selling people you have locked up in your dungeon or did you mean some other types of dungeons?
Hmm..I'd be on board for pandas or Orcas à la Moe Sizlack. People, not so much.
I mean, the orca business nets you more cash, but human trafficking is a lot easier than you think.
I'll have to take your word on that.

@@isaiahgonzales9989 Rich is wrong very often if you ask me. We all have our opinions. For example I agree with Jack about Vanquish 100%.
The last episode of Pre Rec

[The shopkeeper from Enter the Gungeon laughs in Rich Evans when he sees Moonlighter kid]
I really enjoyed this format!
Rich's pajamas are clearly foreshadowing where the next PreRec-review is heading.
I know it's not your biggest web series (yet) but I really do enjoy it, keep it up the good work!
There is a hint to the general price, it breaks the items into categories and shows values every so often.
if you guys haven't played A Robot Named Fight, it's on steam and it's basically a metroidvania binding of isaac. it's very polished, very tight controls, really nice detailed snes-style sprite art. it has the isaac thing of more and more stuff unlocking across playthroughs (whether you complete them or not) and it's just generally really fun and nicely executed. I bought it cause I thought the name was cute but it's actually fantastic. I was playing dead cells heavily at the time and Robot Named Fight was good enough to drag me away from it.
2:47 the rich Evans hairline Rorschach test...
Why did this series have to die. I love it so goddamn much. What can I do to bring it back?
Jesus loves you
John 3:16
Romans 8:35-39
I have no intrest in these games what so ever, but I love hearing you guys talk about them. Great video as always!
Honorable mention to Shoppe Keep
I wish they’d bring the reviews back. I bet I’ve binge watched everyone of them 15 times. At least
30:30 Sega PC games from that era did the separate configuration BS too. Might be a Japan thing.
A dungeon crawler / shop management sim would make an interesting Stardew Valley sequel.
No you get Harry Potter, girl edition instead.
YOooo are you a time traveler???
THATS HAUNTED CHOCOLATIER, OH MY GOD
Whats your opinion about it btw?
Don't look at Rich Evans like he's from Mars.
He's from the planet Gragnar.
So I was on the rlm merch store and was shocked to see there was no rich evans dakimakura cover. Any idea on when that will be a thing. There is much demand.
The apologetic "I'm Rich Evans" seems like a meme in the making.
>10 year old game, menu on L1
Its not only 10 year old, its a JAPANESE doujin game, which mean it will be always hostile to us.
I own a Recettear T-Shirt, I am proud of it, though ashamed as well because of the looks it earns me every time I wear it.
Big props to Moonlighter for the graphics animation and music though!!!
