Me too, recently configured Cemu to play Zelda on 60fps and it's an awesome game. Came back to see their take on the game, since I've sunk some 20+ hours into it. Shame they don't do reviews no more, they have great insights and this review format is so natural to listen to.
Just found this show/channel today! Hate like Hell that I missed it and wasn't supporting it when it was new and in-process. Hope you guys find reason to bring it back.
There have been theories as there are as many as 3 timelines in the Zelda Universe, with Ocarina of Time being the point where it breaks. As from what I have heard, Breath of the Wild is a "Dragon Break" in the timeline. Which is that it is the latest in the timeline, but it is also the converging point of all the timelines. But, honsestly, I don't see why people care about the timelines. Most of the games don't reference previous games, unless they are sequels. The timelines were just theorized by bored people who are (more or less) helping Nintendo chronicle the lives of Link and Zelda.
PineapplePoko is the only voice of reason in this thread. Zelda timeline was never planned out. It was fabricated by fanbois out of nowhere, for no reason and to no end. And that's why it's rubbish. And then a while later Nintendo made up their own rubbish alternative variant, purely as a fan service for that one merchandise book to sell to manchildren in green pyjamas. And immediately after that they went straight back to not giving a flying rat's tail about timelines. Nintendo doesn't care about your timeline bullshit, they only care about gameplay. You'd know if you ever played a Nintendo game. I've played every single Zelda game on every system. I own a physical copy of that merchandise book. There is no Zelda timeline.
It's one part I've never been sure of from watching stuff on it whether it would annoy me or not, but the way he describes it does make sense, as I remember in Skyrim I made myself a super powerful weapon with the best stats possible, I then went and used it to find a weapon imbued with light placed in Skyrim by the gods!.... and it wasn't as good so I just put it in a chest in my house. And it was shortly after that I stopped playing, as I realised while I'd only explored 1/4 of the map, I'd already made the absolute best gear so what was the point of exploring the rest.
It's great how the game allows you to emulate the most interesting character from the Oscar winning Suicide Squad film, "the man who can climb anything".
I beat the game, and I am just wandering around and I have been nonstop just finding cool shit. Also to defend the towers, each one had its own difficulty in climbing it. Thorns, pits, random shit.
53:30 huh, I've never even thought about this. Probably because I've really only ever played Nintendo consoles (I'm really a pc gamer anyway, one that rarely uses controllers).
Majora's Mask. Most original Zelda game released in years, yet constantly gets overshadowed by Ocarina. No Ganon, unique time mechanic, Princess Zelda's not even in it.
i feel that is because many people didn't even get to play it back in the day because it required the ram expansion, which i remember as being rather pricey.
Yes because normally Rich would be the one bitching about a cluttered inventory, but in this video he's suddenly okay with all the bullshit cooking stuff you deal with and the dozens and dozens of weapons you have to manage. It's a completely different person, it's super strange.
Dozens is exaggerating. Even with like five upgrades you can only carry like 12 swords at a time and they break so fucking frequently. Also, you can simply press Y in the menu and it organizes the menu for you.
@@servebotfrank4082 Biggest problem with the breaking weapons is that Link can't throw a god damn punch for once in his life. Even if it did one damage, it would allow for skill to determine fight rather than just your numbers vs the enemy's numbers. This is especially annoying on master mode with the enemy health regen.
One thing that needs to be said: Nintendo's confirm button has always been the button on the right. Sony's confirm button is not the one on the bottom exclusively, rather it varies between regions (and the regional standard didn't even exist until the PS3). Microsoft's confirm button is always on the bottom. And since Nintendo has been releasing consoles longer than Microsoft, the precedent is set in the botton-on-the-right's favor.
In fact that was deliberate on Sony's part. In Japan confirmation is a circle, and x is the opposite. It's that way on a lot of early PS1 games, but somewhere along the way it was changed (at least for foriegn markets).
That's because as late as Nintendo Wii, they only had A and B to choose from. 99 percent of the time, your thumb rests on A and you have to deliberately move it off A to press B, so it made sense to press A for yes and B for no. It had nothing to do with left and right. On a controller with four buttons and two thumbsticks, your thumb can find the bottom button fastest, so it makes sense for that to be the "confirm" button.
many people did not understand, the rain makes climbing, HARDER not impossible, and you have to pay attention to link’s animation when you jump up. It’s another layer of strategy-but a tad too often does get a bit annoying-especially if you don’t know the tricks. Also the more shrines completed, stronger, your weapons upgrade too (enemies ranking too). And also that’s where the mastersword comes in to play being rechargable.
The PS controller is actually backwards, in Japan the circle is seen as yes or select and x is no or negative. The triangle and square also mean something...
Instead of Asking why rich isn't complaining about thumbstick aiming in this game, I will instead ask why the PS4 controller even has a motion sensor or a trackpad if they aren't going to use it to make aiming fun.
I just played this game for the first time a few months ago and I did all the quests, explored everything, upgraded everything, and all that’s left is a handful of the compendium stuff and fighting Ganon. And I stopped because I didn’t want to finish it yet. And I didn’t like the game for the first 20 hours. But it kept compelling me to accomplish little tasks until I fell in love. I didn’t start using the combat system until halfway through. I avoided all combat because I was so weak at the start and combat was scary. This is my favorite Zelda game now supplanting Ocarina of Time.
Rich played how I did. It was almost a week before I even fought my first divine beast, I just wanted to explore! At least a month to beat the game and never did I feel bored. Well worth the $60 if you play this way.
You know what what Richie's not giving credit to is the towers. You cannot climb any Tower the same way. Every tower has a different surrounding, that makes getting to them and climbing them a puzzle in and of themselves.
So this game is so well-designed that rain shouldn't be an issue I get it it's frustrating when you climb... But there's always more than one way to go about, and honestly the whole game with very minor exceptions is accessable without climb. Once you get off the great plateau, you can walk, run, ride horse, AND sail to anywhere on the map. I actually think limited climbing or limited stamina runs have become my favorite way to experience the game.
I'm enjoying getting caught up on all of these, and am a bit sad that I didn't discover it until after they'd already decided to end it. (Not that they wouldn't have otherwise ended it, just that I didn't get to experience it all in realtime.)
And when you get to the top of the mountain it's either nothing, the same dragon you see everywhere, or the same dungeon you see everywhere. Once the mountain is cleared it's the same grey path for as far as you can see, oh but an exciting fictional creature attacks woah! what is it a goblin? no a basilisk? no its a wolf. now a bear. now a crab. woah creative. And the combat couldn't be more exciting.
@@JustinJurazick Morrowind has better scenery but really suffers in its level system, journal system, slower fast travel, and those stupid bird things. It's like some of the team gets it and the rest are just trying to make the same game again.
Link's wakening and Majora's mask are kind of the outliers to the Zelda formula. In Link's awakening you have to free a Flying whale and in Majora's mask you have to Stop the moon from crashing into the Earth.
I watched my best friend play this for a few hours and it was pretty damn fun just to watch. I mean it helps a chunk of it was him going after one of the great beasts but it was neat watching Link just traverse mountains.
I disagree on the music aspect. Don't get me wrong; I love a great, exciting song that you can sing/hum along with, but the ambiance from BotW is amazing. Not all the music is ambiance, though: the towns (espescially Rito and Tarrey town) have fantastic tracks. Not to mention the amazing dynamic audio tracks that fade in or out. It all adds to the open-air feel of the game. Great video regardless
Exactly. If there was epic music playing all the time, it would get so old because you'd be playing for 50 hours. It makes the boss music stand out more.
Agreed. I think I actually read somewhere that it was an art choice to make all open world music as minimalist as possible, to add to the sense of isolation. That's why when you see an enemy, it's just a few subtle xylophone-sounding notes. The only places where music is involved is in towns and boss fights. The Hyrule Castle song is excellent, but you're also subjected to hearing it loop if you've decided to thoroughly explore the castle. Imagine that for the other 150 hours as well.
34:00 Turn A Gundam has similar plot of people with great technology revert back to pre-industrial revolution lifestyles. There are also giant robots buried in the ground like BotW. It's also one of the few Gundam shows actually worth watching too.
Is it superb taste? I mean everything up to (and including) Apollo 18 was great but I think the last album I bought was Mink Car which was...OKish? Bangs and Cyclops Rock are the only two songs I can think of. Christ, I just looked it up and there have been 11 albums since then. Uh, I guess I'm a little behind. NOTHING TO SEE HERE, MOVE ALONG
Far Cry: you need help? alright... go around here, and then get x number of items so you can go there. BotW: ...what are you looking at me for? go nuts!
I know that this is old and there is probably no point in even mentioning it, but the shines were a means to increase your hearts (or stamina) which pretty much just replaced finding heart containers. Effectively it's the same idea: it still takes 4 to increase, etc. The shrines made perfect sense.
If anyone can nag and talk Rich into doing it against his will, it's his sensible bald wife. I foresee a review from Jack where Rich spends the entire time sleeping on the couch
Great job guys! I don't always agree with you, but this time you've covered just about every thought I've had about the game succinctly (hah!) and fairly.
I'm pretty sure the reason the confirm button is on the right on Nintendo is a lot of Japanese games and Japanese versions of games do that. Like a lot of RPGs on PS1 us circle as their confirm button. I think it's just a carry over from that.
BOTW has actually more syllables when spoken than Breath Of The Wild. Most useless abbreviation! (well at least if you ever speak and not just type... I'll too let myself out...)
I remember looking at the over world map that came in the instruction manual for the SNES Legend of Zelda game as a kid, and that rush of excitement you would get as you would imagine all the fun cool stuff you would see in the many locations on the map.... that point about there being no backdrop sky painting brought a tingle of that old feeling!
34:50 idk if like alot of people have the wii u version, i do, and i can say using the center motion control, for aiming with anything in the game makes it 100x easier than using the other method. I can get a super accurate shot with the bow, and i can move/aim stuff with Sheika slate.
I just dont understand how people think the music is bad. I get not liking minimalist stuff but the music feels very well crafted. It may not feel “zelda” but neither does the rest of the game.
This game is absolutely amazing!!!... I listened to Ken Levine gush over it for like 2 hours and talked about every aspect of its game design down to its A.I.... Pretty unreal....
REAL EYES OPEN All are one in Shuma Gorath. Shuma Gorath knows the gate. Shuma Gorath IS the gate. Shuma Gorath is the key and the gate, and he rules now where They ruled then. Iá iá, Shub-Nigorath the Goat with A Thousand Young...
i disagree about the music feeling half assed, i think it fit the game A LOT more than traditional Zelda music, if you heard the same epic song for 8 hours while exploring the wild it would get annoying as fuck, i love the music that plays in WW while sailing, but that type of music wouldn't fit the game at all. Personally i adore the music in this game , hell, my favorite Zelda music is from this game (Hyrule Castle and Dark Beast fight)
I agree with you about the music, it's deliberately minimal most of the time so that it doesn't intrude. There are plenty of epic songs, particularly the combat themes. Pretty much all the music feels very appropriate for when it's used. And the riding/overworld themes they brought up as examples of "bad" are songs that sound beautiful to me.
Yep. The confirm button is also always (A) wherever that button is on an x-box or nintendo controllers. You would think they'd know that after all these years of playing vidya gaems.
49:47 To be fair, the original Zelda on NES only took place in the mountainous area of Hyrule. I think the sequel, The Adventures of Link, showed that the map of the original Zelda was just a small area overall.
Goddamn guys. GREAT review. It genuinely made me interested in a game from a series I've never wanted to play AND on a console I'd never thought I'd buy. You covered a lot of really interesting stuff here! In the top 3 reviews from you guys (others being your exposure of Sonic and evisceration of 1886).
***** nothing ...its just an old flash animation i made of myself like over a decade ago lol. But you are the first person to ever ask, thats cool it intrigued ya :)
I think it’s cool that the recipes make SENSE. Like at one point I just thought “I wonder if I could make cake?” Wheat, milk, butter, sugar, DONE! Same with carrot cake. I think I did rice pudding too
I'm so glad you guys found a good background wash... my inner lampy wanted to yell at you during the robot dino review. Jack, THANK YOU FOR ALSO NOT LIKING THE SCORE.
OMFG, Jack is dead wrong about the music in this game. It's brilliant. Thematically, it fits... can you imagine exploring Hyrule and hearing the Wind Waker ocean theme or LTTP Overworld theme playing for 160 hours? BOTW has unique and awesome music in places... Don't paint with a broad brush! Don't just focus on some of the more atonal, strange music and ignore some of the best tracks that we've ever gotten from Zelda in the last 35 years.
I was so paranoid about breaking weapons that when I bought the house in the game I put all the great weapons on display and never used them. It's kind of sad when I think about it.
53:55 This part is silly. Nintendo is literally the first company to have ever had the ABXY setup on controllers but they are the ones that are doing it wrong?
It makes me sad how underappreciated the sound design and soundtrack are. It's sheer genius, not just the musical compositions themselves, but how they're used. It's one of the most innovative things in the game (far more innovative than a lot of way overhyped aspects like the physics engine) and everyone is just hates it because it doesn't have a typical Hollywood blockbuster style soundtrack, as if that would have worked at all.
Is there any possible chance this show could be rebooted? At least, have one more special Pre-Rec episode in honor of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, with a nice little discussion about the '93 movie thrown in for good measure.

I love the Hyrule Castle Music. As well the music to the whole ending boss battle.
Exactly. If there was epic music playing all the time, it would get so old because you'd be playing for 50 hours. It makes the boss music stand out more.
I totally agree the music is subtle where it needs to be. Pretty superb I reckon.
Yeah the music was great!

Turn A Gundam has similar plot of people with great technology revert back to pre-industrial revolution lifestyles. There are also giant robots buried in the ground like BotW. It's also one of the few Gundam shows actually worth watching too.
Dig the TMBG attire. Thanks for having superb taste.
BotW: ...what are you looking at me for? go nuts!
Breathe it in, everyone. Happiness of this magnitude won't be found here often.
I know that this is old and there is probably no point in even mentioning it, but the shines were a means to increase your hearts (or stamina) which pretty much just replaced finding heart containers. Effectively it's the same idea: it still takes 4 to increase, etc. The shrines made perfect sense.
and add puzzles, which the zelda games always have.
Can't wait for their Mass Effect: Andromeda review lol, oh boy 😈
You'll have to convince Rich to play it first
Rich pretty much said if someone sents him a copy he will burn it so don't bother.
He was pretty much done with Mass Effect after 3.
Its a great game. Seriously. Not a great movie but its a fucking great game.
If anyone can nag and talk Rich into doing it against his will, it's his sensible bald wife. I foresee a review from Jack where Rich spends the entire time sleeping on the couch
Unfortunately its gonna take 12 years to make.
Editing was on point this episode. ON POINT, JACK!
Whenever people talk about BotW, I automatically assume they're fans of Red Letter Media.
Why?
@@maurymoto7219 pretty sure it's a joking insinuation of it being phallic and excreteing on your device. No lore spoilers that I'm aware of
I entirely agree about the towers Jack. Also how you get to the top of the towers later in the game added a challenge.
Rich, are you trying to say you personally loved this game?
Me, personally, I loved it!
I need jack and rich to talk about tears of the kingdom... Elden ring... Baldurs gate 3...
When we needed them most.. our heroes are silent. 😫
IS BREATH OF THE WILD REPLACING BEST OF THE WORST?
**I'll let myself out**
Weekend Warrior and off a cliff
Weekend Warrior
Love your channel man! Always cool to see someone I'm subbed to in the comments here.
No, duh! BotW has custody Monday thru Thursday, and BotW has custody Friday thru Sunday.
No no, stay. You stay right there and think what you did.
You, stay, right, there.
I disagree with Jack about the music. Fits the tone of the game
34:50 idk if like alot of people have the wii u version, i do, and i can say using the center motion control, for aiming with anything in the game makes it 100x easier than using the other method. I can get a super accurate shot with the bow, and i can move/aim stuff with Sheika slate.
I am Still waiting for Rich Evan to Talk about The Zelda Breath of the wild Timeline :DThank you Jack Great Episode Of pre rec
As soon as you started the timeline line of speech i said out lout CUT NOW and you did, love it.
rich evans for president and jack the other guy for vice president in 2020! make America love chupacabras again!
+AngrySkeptic So then why is all the content where Rich is alone boring as hell?
Because Rich is an overrated hack?
REAL EYES OPEN
All are one in Shuma Gorath. Shuma Gorath knows the gate. Shuma Gorath IS the gate. Shuma Gorath is the key and the gate, and he rules now where They ruled then. Iá iá, Shub-Nigorath the Goat with A Thousand Young...
They would both be terrible politicians. That's not a diss, it's just not their area of expertise. I don't think they'd argue with me on that.
holy shit this is toxic.
They need to revive this show when tears comes out on, if they live stream it on twitch and link it on Twitter and TH-cam tons of ppl will show up.
i disagree about the music feeling half assed, i think it fit the game A LOT more than traditional Zelda music, if you heard the same epic song for 8 hours while exploring the wild it would get annoying as fuck, i love the music that plays in WW while sailing, but that type of music wouldn't fit the game at all.
Please bring Previously Recorded back.
Isn't the confirm button the rightmost button (o) on Japanese Playstation consoles, while it's the bottom one (x) in the West?
“I sense a butt.”
- Rich Evans
Goddamn guys. GREAT review. It genuinely made me interested in a game from a series I've never wanted to play AND on a console I'd never thought I'd buy.
You covered a lot of really interesting stuff here!
In the top 3 reviews from you guys (others being your exposure of Sonic and evisceration of 1886).
56 minute long episode of Previously Recorded??? Christmas is early
I think I did rice pudding too
what rich sounds like when he wants that jucy shaq meat 37:23
Gonna need a few more copies of Nukie.
Chiming in from New Year's Eve 2018 to say I love Jack's shirt. Put a little birdhouse in your soul my man!
Is this replacing Rich Evan's crippling depression?
No, only his diabetes medication.
BaconOddity Is Rich Evans replacing Wilford Brimley?
the only thing that replaces Rich's crippling depression is Shaq's man meat and Star Wars.
Is a new and possibly original Joke ever replacing this veery boring old one?
Klaus L. No probably not.
Just call it what it is. A clever dopamine releasing combination of reassuring sound effects and creative achievement win animations.
Isn't that just a description of gaming?
53:55
This part is silly. Nintendo is literally the first company to have ever had the ABXY setup on controllers but they are the ones that are doing it wrong?
AURORA BOREALIS?! At this time of day? At this time of year? In this part of Hyrule? Localized *entirely* on that mountaintop?
Damn, I have to get up early in the morning. Ah, fuck it.
finally after buying a switch and being able to play BOTW, I can now watch this in 2021
Hahaha, Same!
Man, go listen to the Stone Talus fight music and say the music is bad
ITS SO GOOOOD
Just beat it like 15 minutes ago and then went on youtube and saw this video was out, today was a good day
