  • Angela Popplewell challenges the superhero complex that we need to “save” others and discusses how she came to that realization. Angela speaks about her non-profit 100cameras and using that model to educate about perspective as those very same others that we believe need "saving" can teach us a lot too.
Angela Francine Popplewell is a founder and the Chief Storyteller for 100cameras, a non-profit organization that teaches kids around the world that their stories matter and helps them explore their narratives in the context of a global world. Students share their perspectives through photography and then sell their images, empowering them to become change makers. Popplewell has worked abroad with educational and community development programs in places such as Romania and India. These experiences along with others redirected her passion to working with kids, the power of storytelling, and local community development initiatives worldwide. Prior to 100cameras, she was one of charity:water's first interns and was Director of Development at New Life of NYC, an inner-city community center located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Popplewell lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband, Ty, and their newborn son, Theodore Brooks.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

how to train one's self to have one? I know when I am high on weed I can look at many scenarios for situations, rather than assume one particular self fulfilling prophecy theme...

Theoretical perspectives are the basic assumptions about how society functions, the role of sociology, and the application of a specific set theories in studying social life.
-- Society is a unified whole that seeks equilibrium
-- Society is composed of groups competing for scare resources
-- Social life can be measured through observing daily interactions
-- Sociology should be used to enact social change
-- Sociology should be value free

Does she ever come back to the cover letter that got her the job, despite being the least qualified applicant? Was the cover letter different from the ones that talked about her experience as a baton-twirler and a barista? How was that relevant? I don't see how she established any sort of perspective in the first two minutes of her talk that motivated the following narrative.

Whenever they say... put things in perspective....you know corruption is coming....
    The small becomes big ...
    The big becomes small...
And everything is 🤥 fake and lies....

That selfie thing - no, just no. Immediately undermines any notion of me taking this seriously. My perspective has not been shifted in a positive direction. Cannot entertain this purile and indulgent fiasco for more than 3 minutes. I'm sorry. Anything genuine out there, or is this all designed to hook in the lowest common denominator with silly catchphrases, hopeless cliches and vacuous setiments?
