    I really want to explore landscapes but so far even “beginner landscape tutorials” are far too detailed and challenging for me. I have been searching for someone who teaches basic landscapes by simplifying a reference photo down to just a few simple shapes and colours, and who also explains each stroke and placement of colour and technique. I have found that person! Thank you for this tutorial Scott, you are a very good teacher! So helpful and I hope to see more from you just like it ✌🏼🎨

      Hi Jill! I will definitely do more like this. I will also be doing larger paintings too as I love doing both! If you have any questions let me know. There are quite a few videos on here for beginners. Have a look at the playlist for beginners and see how you go. Cheers Scott

      Start with a simple seascape. Draw a horizon line. Paint shades of blue above, leaving some white for clouds. Mix some different blues, and fill in below the horizon. Darken the horizon line to represent distant land. Instant landscape!

    I really appreciate your classes. I became a Lefty 4 years ago and art has helped me to progressed in my new way doing things and seeing things. I just started watercolor painting in July of 2021. You were one of the first I started learning from and I have been obsessed and look forward to your tutorials. You encouraged me to learn how to use my left hand to my best advantage and how to use my thought process to see things that I can accomplish. Thank you Scott I really truly look forward to your tutorials bless you.

      Hi Marjorie! Fantastic work starting a new skill not long ago with your other hand! That is an amazing thing to even attempt let along persist at! I am so pleased you enjoy the tutorials! I love watercolour and art! Because of it I see the world through different eyes and it makes the world around me an exciting, magical place! I hope to pass on some of that gift to others! Happy painting! Keep up the good practice!

      Sounds like yours is an interesting story, Marjorie. Switching hands and engaging previously unused portions of the brain has always fascinated me. It takes enormous tenacity; not for the weak. I wish I could watch you progress.
      Regarding art and the brain, have you read, Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain, by Betty Edwards? I think someone like you might particularly enjoy it.
      Good luck on the adventure.

    Thank you Scott. While I always enjoy your tutorials, as someone who doesn't even qualify as a beginner - I guess I am a sub-beginner - this was so useful. You really helped me to understand some of the things I was simply inferring from your other tutorials. Your teaching style is so inviting. Wonderful!

      Pay attention to the process experience, and you will quickly gain confidence in learning. There is no definite standard for painting. If you feel that you cannot meet the requirements, it may be that your requirements are too high.

    • @ScottSwinson
      @ScottSwinson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Lois! I think it will be a good idea for me to do at times some simpler paintings on a small scale and try and explain almost everything I know is going on on the page so anyone watching can really start to understand the medium and also gain an understanding of what you need to know and be aware of to paint easily and fluidly! I am sure you are not a sub-beginner!!!!!!

    • @Bearwithme560
      @Bearwithme560 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ScottSwinson Small scale is super for building confidence. Have you done more since you wrote this? They also make wonderful gifts as cards and skies can be a metaphor for any emotion one wishes to convey.
      Please tell me, how difficult is it to adjust techniques when making the leap to bigger scale paintings? I feel daunted by the prospect of my paper drying too quickly, and in our very arid climate even a 5x7 sized piece begins drying on the edges almost immediately. Would it be possible to work in stages to avoid ruining a large piece of money (i.e. paper)? It looks like those large swashes of pigment need to be laid on quickly to achieve your glorious skies. Is spritzing feasible? Thanks for everything, especially your infectious enthusiasm.

      I agree Sue! I was lucky to have good tuition from the beginning from Tony Smibert but I still used wood pulp papers as they were cheaper and along with really cheap watercolour paints I made my life very difficult at times! It really is an amazing thing, cotton paper and if you buy full sheets and cut them up you can often find brands that are much better than others. Thanks Sue!

    A super demonstration as always. I think I'll do a few of these smaller size paintings. As you say, it's better to start small and practise a lot. Save the bigger sheets for when I've got more confidence and control in the techniques of brush usage, humidity and paint mixing.
    The simplicity and almost monochromatic colours have such an impact through the stark contrasts and subtle textures that you are able to produce. It's wonderful watching you paint, now I have to go and try it too.

    • @ScottSwinson
      @ScottSwinson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mark! Yes that is so important to watch and then do! When I was learning from Tony Smibert I would watch him paint and then go home and paint for a few hours! That watching and then doing led to a really big improvement in my understanding and my ability as an artist!

    Thank you for this! It’s very helpful. I have a couple of questions, if you don’t mind. 1. You said the paper was drying out too fast. When that happens, is it OK to re-wet the paper, whether with a brush or a spray bottle? Or is that going to mess things up? And 2. I am fascinated by your “palette” set up. I see you have big bowls of color. Would you mind going into the whys and wherefores? How does it work and are the whys behind your choices? I assume they are colors you use a lot? Are they weak washes? Intermediate? I’m fairly new at watercolor and have been very frustrated by the various pallettes I’ve tried. I hate the half pans, they’re are too small! And I find the plastic palettes frustrating because of the way they bead up. I’ve tried small ceramic dishes and like them better, but I’m still trying to figure out what works for me.

    • @ScottSwinson
      @ScottSwinson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marc! It's really good to get to know your brushes, paints and paper. It can make your life heaven or hell! It is also really important to gain an understanding of watercolour. How the pigments behave, how brushes behave, how does water effect all of that! If you don't understand these sorts of things you will be making life more difficult than it needs to be. Good luck! If you need any help let me know. Cheers Scott
