If it's always back on the 50, students will get into the habit of listening back in that direction, but if there's no battery there (as drill moves around) it'll turn messy.

Match grip across the line means you teach 1 technique, 1 type of rotation across the entire battery. Its much easier to teach concepts this way as opposed to relying on traditional. Also possibly the best video to show to directors regarding the travel of sound. I show this to everyone.

Bit of a late reply, but the reason they used matched grip is because snare drums lay flat, now. Snare drums used to REQUIRE traditional grip, because (traditionally), snares were on a sling which caused the snares to rest sideways. So it'd be impossible to play without traditional grip. Thanks to harnesses, now it lays flat. So you don't HAVE to play traditional.

As a person who plays clarinet this video is still 100% correct.
