@DECLAN DOUGAN In the days before B-flat and amplification came to pass, to be called a 'band' was considered an egregious insult. I'm sure that makes me a DCI dinosaur, but whatever.
I have come back to this video every so often for 6 years now. Every time I need a reminder for why I became a musician and when I need reminding that life is beautiful.
I have looked several times for a video that makes me feel the same way and brings the same energy and cannot find one. As a member of my high school marching band this is why I do music and band is for this feeling. And what I want to do for the rest of my life.
My band director played this through the speaker and I really almostgot emotional just from how overwhelmingly beautiful and epic this is, I would love to hear this for the first time again
1,000 of these views is just me coming back to watch it again, and again over the last six years. It still fires me up. I’m going to go run through a wall now.
suazobomber - Emotion? Technique, training, and time! Emotion is the LEAST of it. (It's like what the great pianist Vladimir Horowitz said about talent: "Yes, I believe in talent -- and I find the more I practice, the more talented I get!") 😸
Intensity of the volume is not emotion. This is so bad ass and amazing and jaw dropping! It's just loud louder and loudest. Real emotion comes with the artistic liberties taken by both the conductor and the ensemble. There's nothing like this here. It's exactly what is printed on the page which is loud louder and loudest. This is pure intensity. Not emotion.
I remember back when this came out. I was in 8th grade just scrolling around on TH-cam and this popped up and I never heard of DCI before so I had no clue what I was about to get myself into. When I heard them do the second space chords and they got a little bit louder I was like “dang they are loud”. Little did I know that they would just absolutely drop the hammer, it left me speechless. And ever since then I’ve been in love with DCI.
My high school marching band does this warmup, my band director literally stalks Carolina Crown and has been stealing their warmups and practice techniques for years lol
What I love is how they focus on the ensemble. Crown rarely has crazy solo squealers and such. It's always focusing on making the individual fit the section which fits the ensemble. That's why they're the best
Oh my lord. He yelled yes because it deserved it. He was drawing a straight line with his hand because that is what the tuner was doing. That gave me chills and was an awesome experience.
I plugged in my headphones Turned my browser to 100% volume Turned TH-cam volume to 100% Turned PC volume to 100% Added 12 dB boost to volume Took 10 steps away from my headphones And witnessed sound waves distorting the air around it as I went deaf simultaneously, I'm pretty sure I also saw into the future when that happened. If we played this using concert grade speakers, just imagine the destruction that would ensue.
honestly, I would love to see crowns drum major like that........however..............this dudes ego is second to none. The warm ups in the parking lot are great, however..............their show is unrecognizable to the paying public............you walk away wondering what the hell it was they were playing.............talent....YES....................but you wouldn't be able to hum that shit after you hear it.............EGO of the instructors for sure (lets make things as difficult as we can, as long as were happy with it, screw the audience mentality)................how I wish Hy Dreitzer, Larry Kerchner, and the Bob Bunces of the world were still around

Jakob Shelton in my opinion neither is better than the other i love both drum cores with all of me yea scv had way more emotion and thats something crown can get better at in some of their pieces but i look up to both to do better in my playing you feel?
I marched '97-'03 with the Kiwanis Kavaliers before the amplification. I could never really get into the shows pre 90s. Too far into the 80s and it starts to get really really repetitive for me. One the of loudest hornlines I've ever heard was BD '98. They were louder playing backfield than some of the corps playing front. One of the most impressive things I've heard was SCVs hornline singing Adagio for Strings in warmup before finals in 2000(singing through their ballad). They were spot on. Overtones were crazy.
Good checking damn, never thought a warmup routine could bring me close to tears. As a clarinet player this brings me joy that not only can everyone be heard but also their tone is unmatched and unwavering. On my way to a ball game rn with the rest and I’m about to suggest this to my brass section as a warmup lol
I love how another hornline in the background resolves their chord faintly at the end. 2:25 They are literally bowing to CC's brassline. Edit: Haha! It was the Bluecoats warming up in the background! Thanks @Kenneth Schechter!
Well, it’s technically not a resolution, it’s a Picardy third. But yah that’s cool, I didn’t notice until I saw your comment! No doubt the other core heard it even from that far away.
I will NEVER forget the energy, the wind pressure, the sheer force of every chord and what it feels like to stand/sit in the middle of a brassline circle during these exercises 😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨 you literally feel the music, it’s insane 🔥
Brandon Dye Actually, the Chicago Symphony brass section alone is the most powerful thing in the universe. Listen to Mars. 3 trombone overpower the entire orchestra.
Idk if you were ever in band, but plugging your ears actually helps hear the actual tone of the instruments. It gets rid of the extra noise so it’s easier to tell if someone if out of tune. I doubt anyone here is tho...
As some one who has zero musical talent in them and zero knowledge of anything music, I was really lost and then when it “dropped” I was amazed by how cool that sounded.
I love the way Crown shares his love for music. The reason I love Crown is because they are the best at showing emotion through playing. And it shows when they win the best hornline award every year.
Does anyone else get really emotional after hearing this? I’m not an emotional guy whatsoever, but every time I find this video and listen to it I get teary eyed
And they come in waves after. I was describing this video to my brother (very poorly I might add) and as I was reaching the end I was getting chills just thinking about it! Incredible.

Me: Wow... This is pretty good. They're really awesome at fitting into each other's sound and- 2:05 HOLY COW THEY WERE PLAYING MEZZO PIANO! 2:09 ... Angels have trumpets right? Can they play this when I get to the other side?
1:53 is when it changes to mp, then to mf at 2:05. At least, that's how I hear it. There's just enough of a dynamics shift at 1:53 to warrant a change IMO
@@prettysakurafl0wer ridiculous. Literally tear jerking and gave me goosebumps. I routinely listen to this now, to cheer up or get rid of anything stressful.
When the director punched through the air to signal that glissando, it reminded me of Dave Chappelle doing the Howard Dean bit where he yells “Byaaaaaaaaaah!” I love this video!
Jon Williams I mean, you get get all technical about it, but they're still plugging their ears because it's so fucking loud they can't hear shit otherwise
Peter mercil Well let me explain the science. Your ears act as drums. Meaning they vibrate when sound happens. If there is something loud, for instance a marching band, it vibrates to a certain extent that you just can't hear clarity in articulation, tone, or tuning. When you plug your ears, your adding pressure to stop the vibration, allowing the back of your ears to absorb the minor details they're looking for. Katie and Evan Vandoren have been with crown for years, I'm pretty certain they're not plugging their ears because it hurts them
At first I was like, "Yo, these are some PRECISE scales." Then I was like, "Yo... My ears are being raped by every imaginable tone in the audible spectrum..." But in then end, I was like, "OH, THERE WAS A METHOD TO THE MADNESS!"
i listen to music at a relatively loud volume to be able to hear all of the detail and tiny things. the first time i listened to this i thought "oh this is about to sound INSANE" so i raised the volume just a hair, NOTHING could have prepared me for the sheer volume that hit me, and it was amazing
i would do ANYTHING to listen to this for the first time again.

So much emotion through so many young players...breathtaking.
suazobomber - Emotion? Technique, training, and time! Emotion is the LEAST of it.

Ian Shields If you don't love it, you aren't going to do your very best at it. That's where emotion comes into play.
There is a difference between playing and performing lmao
Sameeee
My director as well
Jmaz Zee what’s the name of this warm up?
Kyd Cj drop the hammer
I wish ours did that
Even as a battery member...crown's hornline is what makes them my favorite corps of all time.
What I love is how they focus on the ensemble. Crown rarely has crazy solo squealers and such. It's always focusing on making the individual fit the section which fits the ensemble. That's why they're the best
What's really shocking is that Crown DOES have screamer parts, they are just used within the entirety of the band, making it even more impressive.
Matt Mansour I totally agree. I'm in an NBA drumline and I get shit because I love Crown :p

Check out some of the mello lines in the 90s, particularly Cadets and Star of Indiana. You won't be disappointed.

I love the way Crown shares his love for music. The reason I love Crown is because they are the best at showing emotion through playing. And it shows when they win the best hornline award every year.

magoo salazar You can hear the pitch better xD, and specific instruments better.
