Dave’s engines in Centerville, UT. They’ve taken the Duramax engine to a much higher level. It would certainly be worthy of watching Rainman and Dave’s have a joint effort on this build!
Not knowing anything about Ray's financials, but if he had about $20K to drop on this project it would be great. Get that engine done the way he wants it done by professionals.
If you like the rebuild type stuff, check the 'Franna Crane rebuild' on the 'Cutting Edge Engineering' channel! Pretty much the only original bits to stay are the two halves of the chassis and most of the boom pieces. Oh, and the lift cylinders, but he did rebuild those... lol
Have to agree that Dave's auto is the man you have to talk with, or just ship your engine to him and have him go through it and have a guarantee on his work
Just as an FYI, the power grid in Cuba collapsed after the last hurricane and hasn't come back weeks later. They do have a lot of nice cars that need repair. 😊 Nice series, BTW.
When you dropped the bell housing bolt, my mind screamed "gravity", and I was so disappointed when you didn't say it. I think I've been watching too long. You have programmed my crain-brainium.
I would hit the entire frame with a good degreaser and let it sit for a bit. Then pressure wash again before any new paint. Metal needs to be CLEAN for fresh paint to stick good! HUGE job there Ray!

For the work that you do with that truck, and you didn't throw the engine. JUST WOW, killer truck and excellent driver. Any truck you buy now, you would be hard pressed to find one as good.
Ouch 39 degrees is rough. Last weekend I was hunting in the single digits with gusty winds. Made it about 8-9 hours before finally heading back in after what felt like my eyeball freezing. Just another late fall day in Phillips, Wi 😂
I remember several reverse rotation engines in circle track cars so anything is possible except getting these engineers to build in reliability and ease of repairs
Hello, Ray! I own a duramax LBZ like yourself, and I have done a lot of research into the broken crankshafts some owners experience when tuning these trucks to high horsepower. Through the many forums I visited on the issue I think the main trend I see is that it is not an alternate firing camshaft that corrects this issue, but rather a billet and keyed crankshaft such as the Wagler Callies Billet Crankshaft. There have been no reports that I could find of a broken Wagler billet crank. However I was able to come across a few that had an alternate firing camshaft, when approaching high horsepower gains. Just my .02
I would like to add that there were a couple crankshafts that broke that saw the factory firing order where its hitting 3-1-2 as well as the new firing order. That could be a reason some owners saw their cranks breaking since it wasn't a new crankshaft that was exposed to a brand new firing order.
This reminds of Mike Homes the house guy. "Mike, my front door handle is loose. Can you help me?" Mike guts the house, redoes the wiring, plumbing, landscaping and builds a garage! Lol. I do enjoy your videos. You are an amazing young man. Thank you
I've been sat patiently for Project Roll-Back to hit the workshop and get it's day and get finished off, and see Ray put it to good use, once working it can take some of the workload off the Silverado too, and become the workshop workhorse. Otherwise all that said, great series of videos on the rebuild of the Duromax thus far, I think you have dived really deep into the money pit on this project too Ray, HP boost will be a nice upgrade, and the fact you are paying attention to other components that will be affected by said HP boost is great, and as you say "while I'm in here or on it" is always the right way to go
A couple years ago I took the bed off my truck to replace the bed rails and patch rust. While it was off I used Eastwood rust reform and chassis black. Man it looked great! By the time I was done, the bed had a brand new coat of perfectly matched paint, being a King Ranch meant three colors too. I hope the new owner appreciated the work done.
Times have changed, back in my day you never fixed up a truck. They were barebone, no a/c, no p/w, no tilt, came with a AM radio (if that) and some even had a 3 speed on the column and a bench seat. The older F150's had Kingpins which used to freeze up and then it was like having no power steering. If you had a truck, everyone called you to help them move.
This will be a great series of videos. While you are in there can get out of control, but you will have a a new older truck ! I am looking forward to seeing the next video.
The progression of this project, has my anxiety in overdrive! And it's not my project, LOL! Once this is done, it'll be the most pristine example, of that year truck!
the whole operation gets bigger and bigger and more complex, even some tune-up and lifesaving improvements for the engine. But, when ready, you're gonna have a very very nice truck! And get well soon Ray
