#82 Golden Fire Revisited. Woodturning Off Centre Sycamore Interior Design Wall Hanging

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 5 ก.พ. 2025
- Twenty months ago, I turned a project called Golden Fire which has proven to be (so far) the most popular video on my channel...so I thought I revisit the project and come up with something different but vaguely along the same lines.
The interior woodturning project is a coloured (dyed/stained) sycamore wall hanging that he been textured and accented with gold gilt. It's quite a simple technique, using three off centre positions, but the effect is fabulous.
For the colour, I used Intrinsic Dyes (see www.msabansmith... for purchased options (UK only)), the gold gilt was Liberon 'Trianon' and the texturing tool was a Dremel. I turned most of it with a Robert Sorby half inch bowl gouge.
Ideal for an interior design use, I'm more than pleased with how the project has turned out....and if there are any interior designers watching - drop me a line, the piece will be for sale!
At www.msabansmith..., you can read more about this project, see images, and possibly download one of the projects .pdf worksheets or full length, advert free videos. There is also a free mailing list!
This project has inspiration from Nick Agar (www.turninginto...) and Douglas J. Fisher (www.douglasjfi...)

What can I say Martin, the finish and workmanship is stunning great work and video again.
You make this look easier than it is. I’ve learned a lot from this video, but still confused on lining up the different centers but will keep on trying. Thanks so much for the inspiration!
INCREDIBLE Martin, just incredible!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the good films they give me a very soul of inspiration
Beautiful Martin- a lot of work in a brilliant piece😆😆
In my humble opinion... your very best yet Martin. A superb piece and a great video mate.
Cheers
Mike
Hey Mike. Thanks very much - remember it was you that started it all off!
Martin
Thanks for another great video you have bettered golden flame 🔥
Must. Stop watching you videos before going to bed my brain won't switch off 😀
Hi Harvey. Sorry if I cause you some sleepless nights..and if you are out on the lathe at 3am, please take a coffee to keep you awake! ;-)
All the best,
Martin
Beautiful piece as expected from the master of the art piece
Beautiful work Martin. Thanks for sharing.
Wow again Martin, just awesome
Your getting rather good at this woodturning, another great piece martin, satch
Martin. You are one of the most amazingly talented artists I have ever seen. I thank you for taking your time to make and post these videos. You inspire me so much to make my own pieces of art. Thank you again. Robert from Virginia,USA
Hi Robert,
Many thanks for your kind words and for watching. I'm really pleased you've been inspired by my work! There are more projects planned for September onward, so stay tuned for more inspiration!
All the best,
Martin.
Amazing piece Martin! 😎😎
Stunning peice every time martin
Thanks, George.
Just stunning..... one more for the bucket list :)
WoW mate that is really beautiful
Hi Albert. Many thanks for saying so. :-)
Outstanding and inspiring work
Stunning piece of art. Missed your videos of late but this was certainly worth waiting for. Congratulations
Lovely Martin, bravo. Thanks again for the mention and linking to my website. Much appreciated. Keep up the excellent and informative videos. I had the opportunity to meet Mark Sanger several years ago at one of the AAW Symposiums I demonstrated at and he said that his decorative and coloured work was not that popular in the UK, but I think you, he and others are making it more popular as time goes on.
Hi Douglas,
Many thanks for watching - I'm blown away that you watched! A little star-truck perhaps! Your work is an immense inspiration to me. Mark is a great guy, and I am pleased to call him a friend of mine. I love his work too.
UK turning seems to be a little 'behind' compared to that of the work in the US and Canada - it's getting there though and I see more and more turners experimenting with colour and texture and think outside the box more....which in my opinion at least, is a good thing.
Wishing you and your family a very happy new year.
Martin
And Happy New Year to you as well Martin. Next time you see Mark, please say hello to him for me. Cheers, Douglas
A beautiful piece. Regards, Júlíus
thats one stunning piece Martin
Nice job Martin, the piece looks stunning.
Hi Paul. Many thanks. :-)
Martin
Hi Martin, a very nice piece of ART work. Please keep it up as it's giving me lots of new ideas
Great video Martin! 😁 The piece came out beautifully...I see hands in the negative space of the burning, holding up the center medallion. 😃
OK After months of watching you to turn, burn color (colour) and other wise work with Sycamore, I took the day off and drove hours to a lumber yard and bought some 16 quarter sycamore. Enough to try a couple of wall mounts/ platters. Don't expect to turn as beautiful as your creations, but looking forward to cleaning up the projects in the shop and trying the new wood. pottsy
This is absolutely fantastic, in my opinion your best piece to to date. Thanks for sharing it.
Totally inspiring Martin. Thank you
Thanks, Franks.
Martin
very nice man. you have got me hooked on turning. love your videos. cheers.
Beautiful piece, very inspiring, and I enjoy the way you share your different methods.
Incredible and brilliant! Maybe I will try something similar once I have handed in my training wheels👍
Hi Mark. Thank you very much for saying so. I hope you get the training wheels off and begin to experiment more. Don't rush it though....that's how accidents can happen. :-)
All the best,
Martin
That's a pretty exceptional piece Martin. I find it quite interesting and overall superb! Thanks for sharing
Hey Dana. Thanks for your comment - really pleased you like it. Was great fun to turn. A couple more along these lines coming soon.
All the best,
Martin
Martin, your artistic talents are fabulous and very inspiring. Keep up the wonderful work.
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
Very beautiful and artistic as always thanks for sharing!
Cheers
Afshin
That is very impressive!
Cheers, Trevor. This piece travels the country with me to the demos I do.
Stunning piece, Martin!!
Hi Jeff. Thank you very much,.
Martin
Thank you , food for thought
Hi Stephen. Thank you...I hope you're hungry! Got loads of other ideas along these lines!
All the best,
Martin
Martin,
I really like the wall hanging and it really was interesting to see how your style has made changes though very modest.
Jim
Hi Jim! So good to hear from you. I hope you are well. Thank you very much for your comment, as always. It's a really interesting thing to do - go back through your older stuff and see how time and skill has changed your work.
All the best,
Martin
Nice video, Martin. The finished piece looks great. Must try some off-centre turning myself. Thanks for this. Cheers
Hi Stewart. Many thanks for your comment - Off centre is great fun....a little nervy to start with, but keep out the way and you'll be fine! Lol.
Great job Martin. It's always nice to look back and see how you've progressed and you clearly have. Personally, I liked the more vibrant colours of the original but I like the offset boss on your latest version.
All the best,
Ben
Hi Ben. Good to hear from you - Looking forward to seeing you again at UKIWS if you're going!
I like vibrant colours, too but have been favouring deeper, more luxurious, less 'carnival' colours recently. They seem to suit my work better.
All the best for now,
Martin
Amazing project...I love watching your videos!
you are very talented sir
Really an amazing piece Martin, everything is so well balanced. Thank you for new inspiration :)
Oh no! Now I'm going to have to try off-centre turning!
excellent work just taken up turning don`t think i`ll be able to do that yet
Hi Philip. Thanks for your comment. If you want to have a go at it, move the piece a little way off centre first to get used to it, and then carefully, and safely increase it over time.
All the best,
Martin
I cannot believe it was 20 months ago!!…time flies by as you get older so spend it wisely..... Martin, what happened the the first black you placed in ring 2?… you cut to the next scene and it was sanded out.....
Lovely the new turning and as usual, plenty of tips along the way. Cheers my friend 👍🏼😊
It’s beautiful
Wow! awesome job man
Hi Alan! Thank you very much! :-)
All the best,
Martin
Very nice fab
This is great. im speechless. i m gonna make an inspired version of this. little suggestion: make short versions of your videos, because it may bore people 22min is a bit longer for many on youtube.
Hi Rockfang. Thanks for the comment - Enjoy making your version of it! I've reduced the length of the videos down to this long following a subscriber poll as few months ago - any shorter and information would have to be left out, and I'd rather produce videos that communicates as much info as I'd like to. I keep a close eye on my stats so can tell if vids are too long for most and adjust the next one to suit a wider audience whilst trying not to leave out information or lose the production value - it's a difficult balancing act!
All the best,
Martin
I totally got you. but i think i couldnt make myself clear enough. I meant that, along with the longer versions, you may want to add shorter ones for the ppl who watch your videos for just the pleasure of them :)
As a newbie at woodturning i definitely prefer longer videos to learn further :)
brilliant. i think you have changed my opinion on pyrography . i never liked it but this looks great
Definitely a lot of work I wish the shine would pop a little more on the orange but what do I know Altogether it’s a beautiful piece congratulations
Thank you. It turned out how I wanted it to. For me, there's enough in the piece for it not to need a brighter shine on it. At the moment, it is hanging over my fireplace in the living room.
AAAAAAAAAAAAHH!!!!!
I can't tell you quite what that piece does to me - it's so bloody amazing!
Well done - I hate you lol!
👍🍺
Truly appreciate the artistic skill involved here. The finished project is simply outstanding. My question is, are the projects that you have been turning of late primarily for their commercial attributes or to show off the range of your products (dyes, etc) or what I think is primary a way for your to demonstrate your fantastic artistic abilities? Rest assured, in me you have a dedicated and ardent fan. As you know, even if something is not my "cup of tea" I will never give a thumb down (perhaps because I lost my right thumb during a "dumb s**it " maneuver with a table saw) because you have always demonstrated an openness for the nontraditional. SO, keep up the great work, take care that you give time to you, and carry on!
+Earl Rumble Hi Earl. Good question! The videos since about the end of 2015 have been a happy mix of showing and sharing my developing skills, inspiring and entertaining people as well as the soft promotion of the stuff I've started to make for turners. There are loads of different wax and colour companies out there and similar results to those I get with my products can be achieved with others...I'd be silly not to use my own product in the videos as I developed them to give me the finish I like...and lots of other people, too by all accounts!
For me, it's a bit of a trade-off...I'm not sponsored like a like of other channels and the revenue from YT and the website subscribers doesn't cover the costs of the videos...so, I make a video for the world to watch for free and I gently and quietly promo my products in them. Viewers are inspired for free, and in exchange, I'll tell them that I made the products used.
A few of the videos in that time have not used any of my products, like the ones with reactive paints, for example....so, it depends on the piece in the project as to the finish I use.
I put a lot of the video'd pieces up for sale and use the 'Making of' videos as a sales tool...and it also helps to add to the price. :-)
I will continue to make videos and be as open as I have been for as long as good people like yourself continue to watch, be inspired and entertained. It's part of job now!
Always good to hear from you, Earl. Have a great weekend.
Martin
You're a good man Martin. I will always be here on your side in support. Enjoy!
Hi Martin, really beautifull piece. Personally, I would have put a bit more contrast on the second center groove... But whom am I to discuss colors and taste with the artist!
I love your work , this was amazing to watch :) but...... i would have liked to see how you finished the back? could you show us sometime please?
Thanks for watching Cheryl. Sorry for the late reply. The back had the holes filled, sanded back and then just sprayed with a black gloss paint. Simple and plain.
@@msabansmith It's ok :) I have watched all your vids, I think and then saw how you did the back, :)
Great job Martin. Would it have been easier to work from the more central centres first and work the way out?
WOW WOW just WOW
:-). Thank you. :-)
Love the piece, I need to get a bigger lathe ...
Thanks, Chris - this is the reason I need thin blanks no more than 1.5" thick...and you're welcome to come and play on one of the lathes here if you fancy it. :-)
Beautiful work Martin, do your intrinsic colours come with the spray head or are they extra with the box of colours ???
Love it- But I have a question. After watching your videos I have taken up pyrography. but I have found that I dent the wood rather significantly when doing the burning. Is this also the issue for your stuff? It does'nt look like it. Yhank you for being a continuing source of inspiration!
Hi GD. Thanks for your comment and question. With work like this, a dent is required so a high temperature and a bit of pressure is needed, too. For 'normal' work, say outlining or shading, the temperature should be high enough to burn when the piece is lightly touched to the wood, but not too hot that the burn 'feathers'. Also, the touch you normally need is very light, and barely touching the wood. Tricky to explain in text, but I hope you get the idea.
All the best,
Martin
Martin, another great and creative project. Where do you come up with these ideas? :)
What a lovely piece. Such meticulous planning and execution. Was the change to the Axminster lathe for the increased capacity, or was there a problem with the earlier lathe?
Hi Pat. Thanks for your comment. I'm doing another piece along these lines with a different method of planning. I think you'll find it interesting. I changed to the 2030 lathe after the PCB broke in the Galaxi and was taking a while to repair. It's all fixed now and will be appearing a video or two in the future. Thanks for asking.
All the best,
Martin
That it so good Martin. Intrinsic colours are my next purchase. As a Turner that as returned after a 15 year absence, do I need a Air compressor???
Hi Ian. Most of the time I teach and promote applying colour by hand with towel rather than an airbrush. It takes a little longer, but the effects look a bit less mechanical. So an airbrush is not required for my usual technique, but if you are looking for another toy, then yeah, go for a little airbrush compressor. Make sure it has an air tank attached to it - it will give you a more constant airflow.
Thanks for the info Martin see you at the show....
Amazing work Martin ! Why did you decide to change from the Nova Galaxi to the Axminister AT2030 ?
+Rob O' Toole Hi Rob. GGood question. Thanks. It wasn't an intentional swap. I popped the Galaxi PCB board thing and the repair was scheduled for about a month with no replacements to use or borrow in the UK. I had no choice but to get a new lathe for work. I still have the Galaxi now it is repaired and will feature in a video soon. The Galaxi is a great lathe, I must say. Nice and quiet, heavy and has a good capacity, too. I have plans for it to be used as a dedicated hollowing lathe...but am yet to set it up properly with the Hope Hollowing Jig.
All the best,
Martin

I'd like you to post how much you eventually sell these pieces for.
+Josef Roesler Not sure how much it will be up for sale for just yet. Probably somewhere around £700- £800, I think.
Hope that helps,
Marton
M. Saban Smith Woodturning
I just meant after, like an update. But damn! That's good money.
Josef Roesler It is good money, yeah! 16 hours or so work, expenses, profit etc...it all adds up! I'll do a video about pricing at some point.
