- In this week's wood turning project, I demonstrate the techniques I used on the lathe to turn this off centre elm burr (burl) art wall hanging.
It was great fun to turn and add a little colouring to. Here is an equipment and woodturning tool list for the stuff I used in the video:
Lathe: Axminster 2030 Trade Lathe;
Chuck: Nova's Super Nova Chuck with 120mm jaws and faceplate.
Gouges: Robert Sorby 1.5" Bowl Gouge and 3/8th Spindle Gouge
Scrapers: 1.5" Ashley Isles Scraper and 0.5" Sorby Scraper
Stain/Dye: Black and Earth colours from my Intrinsic Colour Collection;
Gilt: Liberon Versaille
Oil: Hampshire Sheen Danish Oil
Wax: Hampshire Sheen High Gloss

Thank you very much Martin, a very effective way to highlight the beauty of the wood. I love the various contrasts you set up from the copper, gilding, natural through the dark tones of the rim
Hi Russell. Thank you for your comment. I hope you continue to enjoy the videos.
All the best,
Martin
Excellent Martin. Really nice piece with any colouring so subtle that it could be mistaken for natural wood. Also one of the best videos for a while, so nice to see the thought process making it a little more personal. Well done!
Hi Paul. Thank you for your comment and I am glad you like how I've used the dyes. Thank you for the comment on the thought process.
All the best,
Martin
Hi Martin! The original project! I liked it.
Hello Aleksey. Thank you. Much appreciated.
All the best,

I'm really impressed with your artistic talents. I have some technical skills at the lathe, but alas no artistic ability. At 76, doubt I'll ever acquire any, enjoy watching you create!
Great video Martin! 😆 The piece came out beautifully. Thank you for leaving in your thought processes & decisions as you were making them. That was very interesting to watch & makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only one who talks to myself...lol 😉
Thanks for your comment Valarie. Glad you enjoyed the video and my thought process. I talk to myself all the time too ;)
All the best.

Good morning Martkt. Thank you for your kind comment. It's a privilege to be able to inspire people through TH-cam.

Quite an impressive piece Martin. The coloring really highlights the features nicely, well done.
I've been experimenting with epoxy mixed with cocoa powder to fill voids like you had in the off center area of this piece. I mix the powder with the resin to achieve the right color then add the hardener. It looks like melted dark chocolate when finished. I tried it with medium CA for smaller spots, it works OK there as well. Thin CA might be absorbed into the powder better, but I have yet to try it that way. I personally like the look better than coffee grinds, because there are no granules visible. You can also make a cup of hot chocolate with it on a cold day. ;-D
Hi Gail. Thanks for your comment, much appreciated.

Martin
FYI my name is Gil, short for Gilbert. A name that my parents so graciously IMPOSED on me. Not to worry, your not the first to get my name wrong...but it is the first time I've been called Gail. :-)
Gil Grace Sorry Gil! Typing on the phone and missed the autocorrect.
Hi Martin, You must have your lathe very well secured to the floor as their is no wobble at all. I think mine would try and leave the shed if I had something that off centre.
Hello John. Thank you for your comment. The lathe is indeed bolted to the floor.
All the best,
Martin
Amazing!!!
Hi Robert. Thank you very much.
All the best,
Martin
Nice video, Martin.
The shell looks great, this is a whole special form.
Too bad that I only have a small lathe. :-(
Hello Günter. Thank you. Much appreciated. You could always turn a smaller version.
All the best,
Martin
Thanks, well presented.
Hi Stephen. Good to hear from you. Thanks for the comment.
All the best,
Martin
Very nice. Hadn't seen anything like that piece before. Tom Fronapfel
Skvělá práce
great work, as usual. Wondering where you source your infill copper powder and is it available in different metals? All the best
-Kyle
Beautiful work. Does the new hat help in the creative design process. If so I'll need to cover my bald head.
Wow finally a new hat!! Business must be doing well!!
Enjoyed your video as usual, I was always confused with face plate holding screw holes, I noticed you said you will cover them up or fill them up can you tell me how you do it to match the timber ? unless you have to do lots of fine sanding to finish it of with super glue.
Thanking you in advance from OZ
Thank your for your question Jack. I have added it to my Q&A notes and will go through it on a future episode of Turners Journey.
All the best,
Martin
Stunning piece Martin 😎. Did you put the gilt around the inside of the rim or not? You said that you were going to push some in where you scrapped a band but never mentioned it afterwards.
Hi Tom. I certainly did. If you look closely you'll be able to see it during the buffing processed, and on the picture at the end.
All the best,
Martin
lovely Piece, Martin. Off-centre work scares the ***** out of Me! Looking at how you handle it,do you recommend turning as fast as possible (safe)? Or is it more a question of experience? thanks mate ,Alan
Thank you for your question Alan. I have added it to my Q&A notes and will go through it on a future Turners Journey Episode.
All the best,
Martin
Nice
Hi Gary. Thanks for your comment, much appreciated.

Hi Martin I am in my last months of college now and after college I am going to work 4 days a week at a Ludlow Brewery. Ages a go we where having conversations about Turing techniques which I greatly appreciate. The other 3 days of my week I plan to make Pens and my celtic designed bowls. Can you give me any advise on how to make some money on my products I make? Btw lovely wall hanging.
Hi Ollie. I'm happy to hear that you've got yourself some work lined up which will also give you some time to get some turning done. The current issue of Turners Rest has an article entitled "How to make money with your wood turning skills". You can find it here: www.turnersrest.com . I will also add this question onto my list of Q&A for a future Turners Journey episode on You Tube, so keep an eye (or ear) out for it.
All the best,
Martin
Thank you for that. That should be great help. Yep I will keep my eyes peeled
