  • Uploading on Tuesday because it took all night to render. This bout is from the Japanese national men's foil finals, suggested by Luke Mitchell. There is commentary on the video already, but it's in Japanese.
The original, uncommented video was uploaded at • Video .
Please continue to leave as much constructive criticism as possible! The only way I can get better is if you guys help me identify mistakes. Also, please continue to suggest bouts in the comments!

Awesome bout and great commentary, Cheers Luke for recommending it and for covering it The Foilist!

Glad you enjoyed the bout. I'm a big fan of the Japanese foil fencing but damn it's hard to find any bouts from their circuit.

I'll keep my eyes peeled, but if you see any others please send them my way.

Man that was a roller coaster of a bout. I'm not too sure if I agree with some of those simultaneous calls being given to Saito or the yellow card but at least the ref was consistent.

t.87.2: "touches with brutality or made during or after a fall" is a group 1 offense, albeit one that's not usually given a yellow card on a first offense. The simultaneous actions, though, were very odd calls to me.

The Foilist huh... any thoughts on why Chen didn't get a card in his bout against Halstead? It didn't look any more intentional than this to me.

Different referee, different interpretation of "during or after a fall".

I'm surprised at the number of instances where an action happened and a fencer is calling for video before a call is even made. Having watched USA Fencing and FIE Fencing, that seems out of order.

Also, I think Matsuyama's 14th touch was a compound attack where Saito did not find his blade. Second check me?

      I heard blade contact there.

I listened closely and agree. You also get full volume, whereas you are the feature sound for the rest of us.

Yeah, I turned the audio way down on this one because I didn't want to get mixed up with the Japanese commentary.

      Perfectly reasonable

Would love to hear a little about the fencers at the start of the fight, maybe their height, notable past results etc... would be nice to know!

That's easy enough to find on their FIE pages, and details like that aren't necessarily relevant in this form of commentary.

Matsurayama didn't played well in last part of bout...and saito just make points with speed and force only not with technique
