    a nice relaxing paddle up the river....haven't done anything like that for years. As a kid then with my wife we used to kayaking around Pennekamp State Park down in Key Largo....one of my favorite places ever...fishing was great there too off the bridge, also shrimping & lobstering when both were in season. Chris your videos evoke a lot of emotions & memories for me. Ahhhh the bugs gettin to ya :) the drifting around the 8 min mark...sublime. Swans were beautiful. Building that fire brings back memories of being in the Cub & Boy Scouts.....that was a lifetime ago... looks like it was such a great time Chris...that swan wanted more LOL. Best 23 minutes I spent today ....and the song of the paddle was enhanced a few times by that rhythmic rain :) cool of you to feed the ducks bro :)

      Kevin Clements I’ve done this only about once per year for the past 10 years or so, I really should do it more often too. It’s so great to just focus on the simple things in life sometimes, staying afloat, shelter, food, water, fire. I was in the scouts too, and so are my boys, love all that stuff. Not sure I’d be sleeping in a boat out in the open in Miami after watching all those python videos this last week 🤣

      @@chrishomer yeah those are scary sounding. I gotta look up those vids, are they on TH-cam? I knew they were out in the Glades but here in the city too? I gotta see these 😁. @@chrishomer oh okay I looked at the video....Black Point - that's in Miami-Dade County but SW 287th Street & 87the Ave (approx) that is about 25 miles south of me near Homestead (I live on SW 22nd Street and between 78th Place and 79th Court).....and down there is the entrance to the Everglades National Park....and they have a HUGE python problem there. Pythons are not native to South Florida and they are affecting the eco-system and are rapidly multiplying- they have no natural enemies in the Glades. They have been known to ingest even baby key deer for food. There is also a growing iguana problem as well, as they too are not native and as such have no natural enemies. For whatever reason the gators don't eat them, of course its not in their DNA so to speak to try to eat one. the pythons are messing with birds nesting and endangering the bird population. It's not something Mr Trump puts a priority on...not like Mr Obama did....hopefully this gets corrected on Novenmber 3rd.

    A clear break away from the hills and mountains Chris. Rivers are the arteries of the land - they have soul enough to make anyone feel good. Looks like your re-discovering that. Mark

      @chrishomer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wye Explorer Definitely. I do this kayak trip here about once per year for the last 10 years now but I’ve definitely spent more time there recently doing other things too, which I wouldn’t have done if Wales was “open”, take the good with the bad, find new places and all that. Truly a pleasure to be on the water as always 👍 Thanks for the river inspiration

    Ive just bought an inflatable 2 man for me and my son - hes 8 and loves the outdoors (we did a 120KM bike ride and camp recently and he did it on a BMX....) We tried to join a Lake club near us, and people got snobby about the inflatable craft (even though it was like 400 quids worth) and didnt give us 1 bit of info on how to Kayak Camp so im watching You Tube and came across this. This is simply awesome. We are going to get some grade 1 day runs through winter to get some experience, then do the Ouse, Ripon to York (we are from Yorkshire) run over 3 days next spring. Any advice or tips would be so welcome. I simply cant wait, and I love the fact my lad would rather have a paddle than an Xbox controller in his hand!! Loved it! Well done mate!

    • @chrishomer
      @chrishomer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Jamie Mcsloy impressive bike ride! I have an 8 year old lad too, we’ve not considered bike camping, great idea.
      Not sure why inflatable kayaks get so looked down upon to be honest, yes they’re slow on the water but they’re good value, easy to transport and store, forgiving on the rocks, super stable, less worry, more relaxing, more space, I don’t get it! And they double as an inflatable bed if you’re solo 🤣
      I don’t have many tips unfortunately, non that spring to mind anyway. I’ve done maybe just an average of 3 trips per year for the last 10 years on this one, and loved them all. No issues.
      Have fun!

      Pleased to read this Martin. It's tough.
      I try to include myself in a lot of shots for IMO some very important perspective, but to do it in a way so that it's not about me, it's not even about my experience. It's about THE experience, the trail, the mountain, or whatever. It's always been a concern making the videos the way I do that they come across narcissistic, I've even had comments to the effect of "this guy obviously loves himself" etc, so anyway, it's great to read this. Appreciated.

      ralf norenberg I use a Sevylor Hudson, it’s getting on for 10 years old and still fine! It’s very slow on the water, and although very easy to steer it’s quite an effort to get any speed. On flat water with light to moderate effort it’ll go along at just a few mph. Comfort and stability wise though, EXCELLENT. If you want a relaxing boat that’s almost impossible to capsize then this is great.

    Just found my new Go to chill out video! Excellent footage and very well put together! I ran into a chap this weekend at Hurst Castle south coast this weekend who happened to have done a similar thing around Mudford keys. I’m sold. Gonna get an inflatable canoe soon. I have so many questions. Where was this firstly? And products wise. What long water prod trousers were those? Also what little gas cooker n cup was that? If that was product placement I’ll take the lot!!! Hahahaha

      Count Basingstoke 3rd Great to hear, kayak camping is awesome, love it.
      This was on the River Severn from Bridgnorth, the overnight camp was on a little island I found in the middle of the river, idyllic. A real no mans land.
      The trousers are just basic waterproofs, nothing special. The boiler is a Jet Boil, superb little bit of kit. Boils water in a minute, even in strong winds. I usually avoid cooking in it, water only usually but I didn’t have my pan adapter with me here. It’s not really designed for food, water only ideally. Definitely recommended, in some of my other videos, Tryfan for example, you’ll see the pan adapter with a normal pan being used. Definitely worth it. Not cheap but fantastic. I don’t bother with the official jet boil pan either, that thing costs a small fortune.

      Morning mate. Thanks for quick reply. And thank you. I’ll be watching you vids this am with my morning cuppa Jo. Another conundrum is whether to get inflatable or solid canoe. I have a garage so storage not a problem. But then there’s the roof racks and the schlepp of tying it down each time. But .... they probably track better. And you look like Davie Crocket!!!! Lol. But they ain’t cheap. Starting at about £700 for the cheapest 16ftr. I gotta a lot thinking to do. I’m gonna try buy a “boat “ over winter and hopefully pick up a bargain. Have you ever gone to Hurst Castle south coast? Check it out sir. Keyhaven. There’s a road right by sea. At high tide the water touches car tyres ( but no higher). I’ve seen guys literally set off from next to their cars and paddle along road. Then when they return they have to carry their canoes over sand again. It’s the weirdest thing to see. But amazing little estuary/tidal bay.

    Lovely video Chris....it is surprisingly peaceful watching one man and his wilderness ways....I do a lot of outdoor trips but am soon to get an Itiwit 3 person kayak from decathlon....just for meself but want the extra bow room like yourself for my rucksack....I learnt two great things from your vid.....a niche new way of cooking steak ....and that you can sleep in the kayak with the A frame + tarp....loved the late evening river shots....peaceful vid. what do they call those things you cooked the steak in....great idea....loved the vid....so good not to have naff music too....just localized sound of nature speaks for itself....draws the audience in....good job..enjoyed it.

    • @chrishomer
      @chrishomer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Alex, appreciated. Your question about what I cooked the steak in just confused me. Then I realised, this is the old video, by coincidence I’ve just made a video of this trip again and posted it a couple of days ago, where I cook a steak in a normal frying pan, so that really threw me. 🤣
      Haha, it’s called a ridge monkey mate, it’s decent, popular with fisherman I think, great for just chucking in a fire or embers like that. Difficult to control the heat so it makes some food very tricky, sausages for example, but something that cooks quick and rare like steak is great.
      Kayak camping in an inflatable kayak… yep awesome, still do this regularly. Twice on my most recent trip, another frame with the paddle and then also a frame with a camera tripod.
      All about the ambience for me. Although I tried talking at the end of the most recent and it hasn’t gone down too well, too long and slow I reckon. Anyway, cheers, appreciated

    I was waiting for the commentary to kick in... and waiting... no matter, I think I discovered that it was the severn? Do you get any grief from landowners at all hunkering down on the bank? This river looked very much like the Wye in places. I have had a fair share of negative comments on my films from canoe trips on the Wye regarding fires and wild camping etc, some get very touchy. In the US, camping is open with no permit anywhere within the high water marks of any public river or waterway. Is it the same there?
