      Jakob, I wonder what your thoughts are on this. I agree Ed is making great points. He’s a rational genius. But he COMPLETELY neglects ANY emotional aspects in his conversations and speeches. At least I haven’t seen one yet. I am mostly vegan, but I also suffer from quite heavy trauma and emotion regulation challenges. That includes my eating habits. As much as I desperately want to be fully healthy and of course vegan, at times I have a bad day and eat a meat sandwich. It seems like I just can’t control myself on these days. Just like I grab for a candy that I know is not healthy. I’ve met many vegans in my life who are naturally skinny and don’t use food to regulate their emotions. One of my ex boyfriends was like that. He also had an arrogance about his vegan lifestyle that come on, it’s not that hard. But this absolutely invalidates and dismisses that for a lot of people food is an addiction and coping mechanism and peoples choices around food are very emotional. I don’t feel seen by Ed and his way of debating. I don’t feel my populations challenges are acknowledged and worked with in any way. I hope this will change as part of Ed’s work.

    Thank goodness that Ed decided not to bury his head in the sand that day that he read that BBC news report of the chickens on the way to the slaughter house. Think of all the activism he has done since that day and the number of people he convinced to go vegan. The number of animal lives he single handedly saved, which I can only assume would be in the hundreds of thousands, can all be traced back to that moment in his life and all because it decided to make a change. He is one of the most important advocates in todays animal rights movement and I am so thankful for him. Thank you Ed, you've convinced me to go vegan and I am very proud.

      @@lindamayer4549 People who haven't suffered from disordered eating can't really comment on it because they don't know what it is like.
      As someone who has suffered from eating disorders I have actually found veganism to be helpful. The reason is because when we are using food for emotional reasons we are focused on ourselves. When we restrict food as a way to feel control over something in our lives we are doing it to make ourselves feel better. When we eat "bad food" that we "shouldn't" we are doing it to punish ourselves. Either way the focus is on self/ego. So if you try a plant based diet because you want to be skinny/healthy your focus is still on self and you are likely to slip into traps of control/punishment.
      However when it comes to veganism our behaviours are motivated by something outside ourselves. Our thoughts are focused on others. That can be a far better motivator because honestly we don't always like ourselves very much.
      Trauma can also help us connect better with animal suffering. We know some of what they are feeling! Of course trauma can also cause disconnect and we may need to try various therapies (EMDR, meditation and grounding techniques, sensory or movement therapies etc.) before we are able to connect with anything outside ourselves and our own suffering.
      Veganism aside to change disordered eating behaviours we need to shift thoughts/views surrounding food. No good food/bad food or control/punishment. Food is just fuel. I also found it helpful to view food as an adventure and instead of focusing on restricting (and inevitably "failing" and punishment with "bad food") I looked at trying all kinds of new foods. Like I had never tried eggplant or tomato relish on a veggie burger. There are so many interesting foods out there to try. It helped a lot. Of course it is not as simple as just snapping your fingers and it magically happens. It has taken me lots of therapy and becoming older and wiser and learning about myself. But for the last year at least I have been happily vegan with zero negative thoughts around food or self destructive behaviours.

    Hi Ed, if you were my boy I'd be super proud of the lovely man you are. My son is an avid cyclist who went vegan for 2 reasons, 1 because of the health benefits and being fitter and 2 because of the animals. I've never been a big meat eater but mostly been veggie and thought I was doing my bit for the animals, yes I couldn't have been more wrong, my son has never been preachy but has been very happy to answer my questions, we've always had a great relationship and when I enquired what I could watch he told me about you and a couple documentaries on you tube. Wow, after listening to you and then crying my eyes out at 2am watching what really goes on, all I wanted to do was get up and go cuddle my beautiful dogs and enjoy how much they enrich my life and hopefully mine theirs. So at 60 I have gone vegan, my son takes me shopping and we swap recipes and I've never felt better both in mind and body. My money will never again buy into such a horrid trade. Thank you for being you and your vocation to educate people.

Sometimes i’m craving real bad for like the real deal ice cream, but that’s mostly because i’m around the place or someone else is getting it, it’s mainly the accessability part for me. And also the social part. Like i’m totally fine with non dairy ice cream and many places have non dairy options but occasionally my family goes to a place that doesn’t and so it can be challenging/awkward. I would normally suggest like trying to do something else that’s fun that can create those happiness chemicals in the brain without using food, but i know it’s waaay easier said then done. @@dittmannrudolfrohr2149 so the animals that you pay to be gas chambered aren’t given supplements? Or are they given the most supplementation?
      You do realize weather you consume a tortured animal or not most persons lack in their diets!
      Moreover, the scientific evidence shows we can live if not thrive on a whole foods plant based diet. I get my vitamin D3 from the sun thanks if not I take a supplement nbd
      Most diets you can live with.
      Some that are higher in saturated fat and heme iron have been linked to a number of heath issues. But I’m not really here to debate weather or not you feed animals supplements instead of directly taking them or that you risk contracting ecoli, salmonella, listeria aka food poisoning which could shorten you’re lifespan and cause a plethora of neurological issues or that you eat carcasses with the potential of a whole host of diseases.
      Or that you’ll consume toxic microbiological chemicals sprayed on the body parts to kill said pathogens. I mean that doesn’t include antibiotics resistance, residues or shelf life situations..
      hmm I think seeing animals tortured first hand would give you some perspective then you’d see things from a reasonable viewpoint.
      I’ve been on both sides and have seen nothing but positives moving away from that. I don’t particularly like that we torture pigs chickens in Co2 gas chambers or shoot cows in the head or take their lives at all! We are all here together

    I'd almost look at the parents / moral upbringing argument (near the end of the video) in another way. If your parents raised you to be a good person, you could argue that going vegan is the apotheosis of the way they brought you up; you have simply gone a bit further than they have down the road of 'moral good' because you have a more sophisticated understanding of animal suffering, climate breakdown, and so on. Rather than feeling that your veganism is a moral judgement on them, they could, conversely, view it as the fulfillment of a parenting job well done.

    • @mathonamoore123
      @mathonamoore123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, your last sentence makes no sense! Of course vegans judge non vegans and if parents raise their children as vegans, then they don't need a vegan to tell them, that they're great parents for doing so!! Conversely, raising your children to be kind to people and animals yet give them meat to eat, doesn't make them amoral or bad parents either!

    • @Equinox1.5
      @Equinox1.5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@mathonamoore123 My last sentence does make sense in the specific context of the video. I'm referring uniquely to something Ed Winters said about his relationship with his parents near the end of the video, not making a general statement. (I initially thought this video was on his channel. When I realised it wasn't, I looked for it over there so I could transfer my comment, but I couldn't find it.) I also agree with you that vegans judge non-vegans (and vice versa) and that good, kind people with a good moral compass, who eat meat and dairy, can be excellent parents who bring up kids to be kind to animals, among other things. I know that first-hand. I'm not saying that a morally good upbringing is attendant upon having vegan parents, or that one is a good parent simply by virtue of being vegan.

      @@Equinox1.5 hello, nice to hear from you. I have to admit, I do eat meat and I hate how animals are treated in slaughter houses (day old baby chicks being crushed to death, that really upset me, chopping off their beaks, I saw baby pigs having their tails ripped off, overcrowded warehouse floors, with chickens being crushed and pecked to death, dying from disease and injury, killing cows that are pregnant and then just murdering their full term baby when it should be allowed to be born! (that was the first I heard of it and I'm sickened by it, I don't even agree with human abortion! Etc plus you can throw on evil employees that kick the animals, throw them around the place, hit them with iron bars, artificial insemination, removing a newborn calf from its 'mum etc) my point is that although I say, stop all of the above and just kill the animals quickly and painlessly, the more I listen to Ed the more I am thinking, you know what? He makes a lot of sense. My father once told me, as a late teen to never date a man you see harming an animal ie say he ', just' kicks his dog out of his way (I don't agree with that) as he said he's a bad man that will also harm you! I taught my son similar things, we fed the local ducks in the reserve and the local swans, both lived near our house. We had cats, dogs, goldfish and hamsters as pets too. So, my son isn't going to go around harming any sentient beings yet, he eats meat and that's the point that Ed makes. In general, all normal people abhor harming any sentient beings, yet in the slaughter house they are brutally abused by what people think is just a legal part of food production. I don't agree that animals are equally important as humans, I don't have a problem eating them but I would like all the above and more slaughter house practises to end. The question is though, can you have a slaughter house that treats animals well and ends their lives quickly and painlessly? I am beginning to think you can't, as to treat them all properly would cost money as where do you put the day old unwanted male chicks? I don't understand why they can't be raised to adulthood and be killed painlessly for their meat I think just crushing, live chicks to death is sick. If we wanted all animals to have lots of space then you need more space and that costs money too. Everything that happens in the process, is to make as much profit as possible. I don't know what to do, I have reduced my meat consumption drastically, the past 20 years but I can't seem to become fully vegetarian. I think I'd find vegan ism too difficult altogether. Anyway, the market always dictates industry, if enough people refuse to eat meat and dairy then, the industry will die. I am pleased that meat eaters, are eating less meat, its a start. Take care and God bless from Ireland xx

    I really like Ed's knowledge, sensitivity, patience, etc of the topic. I much appreciate his speeches and stalls from years.
    One aspect I criticize in this talk is his position on "lab-grown meat". Matters of ethics should be united in one's actions and reasoning, not separated and working on one matter of ethics and morality which clashes with 10 others. If I learnt a "take-home message" from human history of science and the so called capitalism-driven "progress" is that when humans try to replace natural processes with artificially-generated ones (see GMO business, Geo-engeneering madness, the loads of harm from the chemical industry in dealing with natural inconveniencing reality, ...for shortcuts apparent solutions... e.g. how artificial landscapes or mass production lead to pest infestations and the idea that humans could narrow-mindedly produce pesticides that would take care of the issue without major side effects: what about all the other aspects that those pesticides caused, by being artificially generated) which tend to normally only hit human ego and arrogance with one fact: ideas as lab-meat, as "magical" DDT, "agent orange", as pesticides only work while there is no big picture in the mind of those who produce them to make it easier for us to circumvent the harder, but wiser, humble use of nature. Making the step into animal-meat-free food without "playing God" is wiser. A harder way tends to be a more constructive way. Let's be cautious about lab-meat. I get a feeling it will be the next costly flop, as feeding animal bones to cows lead to the "mad cow syndrome" (cost: loads of suffering and death especially). Lab-work was also behind Posillac. Lab-work from people who assumed they knew enough to "control", "manage", "replace" thousands-years old natural cow habits and feed with something that narrow-mindedly worked for "business productivity"! Let's keep it as whole and natural as possible. It may take longer, but think of the impact on the cause if this "lab-meat" bears serious side effects which were not put into the "business rush-plan"? Would they blame it on the "vegan movement"? Would that lead higher pressure on "animal-meat and dairy" industry as a rebound effect?

    Also agree with Ed on eating with non vegans. I've got a couple close friends that are non vegan and they are starting to think about these things and eat less meat. They realize I research the crap or of things and I care about my health. If we avoid eating around meat eaters we are missing the chance to expose them to other options and we may be the only one around them to show them is a real option. We are essentially normalizing vegan options when we are involved in the same activities and eating at the same places but choosing vegan options. We are showing them we aren't restricted by our diet and they can make the change while still going about their day normally.

    Really like how Ed added in the nutritional info in this speech. I think that's a concern for many people and it stops people from going vegan. At the end of the day, if someone goes vegan they are accomplishing the goal of reducing animal cruelty. So we should be using all legitimate arguments in our favor to show people veganism is the correct choice. I went vegan for the health benefits at first myself cause that's something that is a big focus on my life. Once I realized that I can be healthy, even healthier, I really took an interest in the human treatment of animals. I think when someone stops eating animals and realizes there is no need that part just comes into our minds. Nobody wants animals treated with abuse but far too many people just accept it as a necessary evil in their minds. People have been lied to their entire lives by the meat, dairy, and egg industry. That's challenging to deprogram the thought of needing animal products to be healthy.

I remember I used to get into arguments with vegans about protein and animals are here for us to eat you're for us to eat. It's amazing how a person can come full circle once the idea to do something becomes their own instead of a followed idea.

      that’s an interesting take, but from my experience, i’ve always thought the non dairy in big letters is pretty obvious. Also, oats are a main ingredient in oat milk, but i guess if someone thought milk was in oat milk there could be a confusion, although when it’s right next to the actual milks you’d think they’d figure it out. Heck there’s even a picture of oats or almonds or coconut on the respective milk package. Either way whether it’s oat drink or oat juice or whatever, people are still going to buy it because i don’t think many people are making that mistake but if they say so.

There are plenty of vitamin A sources, D3 can be extracted from plant fungi lichen, coq10 is available from plant based sources and deficiencies of it haven't even been noted in the general population. Carnosine doesn't need to be taken in from your diet since your body can form it from the amino acids histidine and beta-alanine. Carnitine is another one the body will create on its own so long as it's getting enough protein to begin with however i will address that in rare cases some people can have the condition where they have trouble with the conversation and will require vegan carnitine supplementation, so again even those that can't create it don't need meat. Finally b12 isn't produced by animals, it's produced by bacteria which means vegans have no trouble getting this through fortified foods, plant based milks and a multivitamin supplement. The funniest thing about this all is that the onlt rebuttal that the anti vegan cult minions have to this is "but supplement bad" when there is not only no evidence of this whatsoever or the claim that using supplements is not effective as the anti vegan cult minions like to complain by throwinf around terms like "oh but bioavailability tho" "but the conversion tho" which again, 0 evidence claims that only exist to fuel their delusions that being vegan is a one way trip to deficiency and death by malnutrition. But what's also funny is the fact that the majority of the general population uses some kind of supplements already.

    Part of being vegan for me is health as well. So the lab grown meat would still cause all the health issues eating animals causes. Just for that reason it seems unnecessary for me. Rather not torture animals and be healthier at the same time. I would say it's a better option of course when compared to what we currently do. If my only reason was for the animals I would be eating twinkies and slamming multivitamins all day lol. I think it is also off putting for non-vegans when they see vegans that don't look healthy do to eating junk. So being a healthy vegan promotes veganism more successfully. There's even some vegan bodybuilders out there that I believe add a great piece to the debate cause it destroys some of the negative stereotypes with veganism. Ed, you were the first person to get me to look into veganism before I made the change. The reason I listened to you was due to your polite approach, knowledge, and the way you explain your position. Really appreciate the way you opened my eyes. I was in a carnivore diet whet I first discovered your content and I'm an over the road truck driver. I start on the road for 3-4 months at a time typically. If I can easily eat a healthy vegan diet in the road anyone can do it. I actually used to make that excuse, allowing myself to believe my lifestyle wouldn't allow me to be vegan. I'm 4 months in now and haven't eaten any animal products and feel great. I workout in my truck as well and haven't lost any strength and I've actually leaned out a bit even though I was already in good shape when I started. I'm convinced this is the way we were designed to eat. Keep up the great work Ed.
