    I hope you enjoy this video!
    There's a bit of a unique situation in this video where the sponsor is partially the subject of the video as well. This is because they were able to give me a level of access that normally would not have been possible (Chinese factories are not easy to film in.) I want to stress that I did have creative control over the video but take my presentation with a grain of salt nonetheless. I visited a well-regarded, ethical factory which isn't necessarily a reflection of all factories in China, as you may know. I also didn't cover some of the issues with manufacturing in China and other less-developed countries since I was taking a more holistic, economic view rather than a person view.

    I went to Shenzen in 1989 - the tallest buildings were single storey warehouses and the road between Shenzen and Macau was 2 lanes, but bicycles 3 deep occupied the edges so it was effective single lane "with passing". There wasn't even a direct road from New Territory (Kowloon) so you had to go via Macau by ferry, then 1 hour by jalopy! Today, it has 22 million population and over 50 buildings at 100 storeys. Say what you will - that is MEGA progress in really short time!!!

    As an experimenter and solar innovator I buy lots of hardware from China. Mostly electronics but also hydraulics, motors, flow gauges, all kinds of things. I've been very impressed by the quality overall. In some cases I cannot find equivalent products here in Canada, such as the ultra-low power consuming three port motorized valve in my boiler room. All my solar pumps are Chinese. My evacuated tube water heating panels are Chinese. All are great.
    Jim Kuan below pointed out that American importers only bring in the very cheapest Chinese products to sell to the Walmart crowd, thus giving consumers the impression that Chinese products are shoddy. Nothing could be further from the truth. China makes terrific goods, if you know where to look and are willing to pay a fair price. Cheers from Canada.

      @Zsavage1 So... like many asian inventions that came through the silk road and europe took inspiration from back when it was ass backwards? Like gunpowder, for example? I always laugh at the argument of 'stealing' technology. It has happened countless times before, it will happen again. And it's only stealing depending on where you draw the line.
      Even in europe, countries stole tech from each other. Look at tank designs inspired by the T34. Or how the whole american space program is built on nazi german rocket research. Even within a country, groups and individuals 'stole' from each other. The truth is, all technology is built on something before it. It is the natural course of its development. Look up the expression 'standing on the shoulders of giants'.
      No doubt, in the far future, if china or some other country surpasses the technological development of, say, europe, europeans will be the ones stealing. And that will be fine.

      @J Johnson even if we exclude wartime stealing, the only reason it took longer in the past was due to how slow communication used to be. We enjoy an unprecedented speed of information due to the rise of the internet. Back then it took months of traveling along an uncertain trade route, not to mention the years and decades it took for a new thing to spread and be adapted. If medieval Europeans had access to high speed optic fibre communications, I doubt they would have given a shit whether a certain alchemic formula was "patented" in China or not.

    Shenzhen is a unique case. First of all, Shenzhen is actually not the "factory" but the "development lab" of China (and possibly the world's). In terms of PCT patent issued, Shenzhen accounts for 8-9% of the world (And half of the total PCT issued in China). The two other places that have similar sized PCT total are Tokyo and San Francisco Bay Area. So Shenzhen is really the innovation hub of the world. A lot of Apple and Samsung's technologies are actually developed in Shenzhen. World-renowned technology companies like Huawei, Tencent(Wechat), TP-Link, Mindray, DJI, BYD, ZTE are all based in Shenzhen. The close proximity to manufacturing lines actually references to the factories in nearby cities as Shenzhen is way too expensive for them to stay ( Shenzhen has the highest GDP per capita, highest paying jobs and highest percentage of well-educated population in China).
    2. Shenzhen is also the financial hub of China, some of the biggest banks, insurance companies and real-estate companies in China are based in Shenzhen.
    3. Surprise! Shenzhen is actually the one of the cleanest cities in China.
    4. Shenzhen is very expensive in a lot of ways (for example real-estates), but the average income is also very high.

    It's no longer about the wages. India, Bangladesh and other countries have even cheaper labor.
    What really sets China apart is this:
    1. Energy. China has been securing energy deals very aggressively all over the world. You don't get power outages in China like you do in India.
    2. Rare earth minerals. Probably the most important point. China produces a lot of the stuff and has limited or even banned the exports of rare earth minerals. So, if you want to build electronics, you need to open factories in China.
    Those two aspects are far more important then the rest. Wages will keep going up in China, but companies need the rare earth minerals that China is producing. There are no alternatives.

      They played politics really well. Since even as far back as the sixties, the US Gov gave the Chinese both the plans and the machinery to the M14 rifles. Back when they were Commies and we were supposedly at war. Then bring on the 90s, and you have that happening to whole factories in the US across sectors. If not for the corruption in the US, China never would of been able to suck so much wealth out of the US and expand anywhere near as fast as it did. MAGA the tariffs are helping.

    • @at9871
      @at9871 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You obviously do not understand how Tariffs and Manufacturing protection laws work. Many countries have them on the books, and if Not for NAFTA and later President's actions, any country that moved a factory out of the US, would be either facing such a large Tariff it was unprofitable, if they were not simply banned from doing business in the US altogether, as there are nations on this planet that would use that as a penalty.
      The CIA funneled weapons, money, and training through more than just China, those operations in Afghanistan, which later bit us in the ass, would of succeeded with or without them.
      Those wars were indeed wasted blood and treasure, and went against the will of the people. But those expenditures were minimal compared to the amount of wealth willingly transferred from the US Economy over the past three decades, to most notably China. If China were truly forced to play on a level playing field, and pay proper penalties for breaking international trade agreements, they would not have amassed the wealth they did, in such a short time.
      I am not saying the Chinese are incapable, they have been a powerful nation many times in the past, and can be again, but sucking the lifeblood out of the US, accelerated the process beyond what they could have done organically.

    • @at9871
      @at9871 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People really don't need to waste money on all the cheap crap coming from China anyway. Hell perhaps the quality of many items would be higher and it would be cost effective to repair things.
      China tying up Russian troops being a leading role in Afghanistan is dicey at best. Its like saying Alaska being within striking distance of Russia put them or us on edge which was baseless. The Russians had nukes, which meant any Communist Chinese horde marching north would of been nuked once they got within a certain amount of kilometers into Soviet soil. So no China didn't really merit tying up that many Soviet resources.
      There were military commanders and politicians, who mysteriously died, at the end of WW2 saying we fought the wrong people. We probably did, but on the flip side, the US spent far, far more money developing nukes, than we ever spent maintaining an armed force. Much of that expenditure would of been spent regardless, with only a portion being for the wars.
      Technically part of my life was before all the outsourcing, and I could watch as my Nation started dying as all of that wealth, factories, jobs, were sucked out of this Nation due to trade deals made by corrupt politicians to benefit the Chinese. It is the responsibility of the Chinese government to improve the lives of their people, but raiding the US to do it, is not something I condone of my government doing. It taking the election of Donald Trump to see a change to this took far too long.
      If you go back far enough in US history my people were just as thoroughly taken advantage of, allowing companies to do that to other nations people, and still have access to our markets merely allowed it to continue, after we had eradicated it here, which is something you should not want.

    • @at9871
      @at9871 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Afghanistan has never, ever been worth anything for the ground it is. It has always been a backwater, where nations playing the great game, lose lives and treasure. If the USSR really cared about it, they would of properly sent troops, much like when the USA went into Afghanistan, our leaders cared more about invading elsewhere, then properly invading the one country the nations people agreed to go to war for. I highly doubt the threat of Chinese troops, made that large an impact on the USSR's troop deployments in China.
      Communist China was already firmly established as a slaughterer of millions of their own civilians by the time the traitors in the US gave them the M14 Rifle plans and production tools, in the 1960s, during the Vietnam War era.
      General Patton is indeed the most obvious and famous example. And technically it occurred just after victory in Europe and the cessation of hostilities there. Given the sheer cost in human lives, almost every Communist regime has inflicted upon its own, and neighboring populations, has indeed shined it as a force in the world that should never be allowed to come into power. Much of the propaganda against Germany and National Socialism, was merely that false lies and propaganda. If anything in hindsight, we should have allied with the Germans against the Soviets, and stamped out Communism before it drained two of the worlds largest nations and decades to do so.
      My nation is indeed in decline. The loss of factories has turned many once thriving towns and cities into rotting ghost towns. Families ripped apart just to find work, and an increase in crime, forced acceptance of nonconforming immigrants, and a decline in much of what allowed the nation to prosper. This having been a result of utterly stupid, if not seditious trade policies. Among other things. There is a difference between mutually beneficial trade, and your idea of sharing prosperity. A good economic relationship benefits both sides, not one side unilaterally, which had been the relationship between China and the US since Bill Clinton was President.
      You seem to be under the impression that factories, and economies are finite, that there is a pie only so big and you must take your share. A truly healthy economic system grows, but then again, the founding principles of Communism would not allow for such a thing. Hence why China today had to veer so far from Mao. Instead of stealing American factories, you could have built your own, and sold your products, like any other entrepreneur, My people should not of been forced to subsidize you, your own government should have.
      I will not dispute the US spends too much on military spending, I would prefer we were not the world's policeman. Let other nations foot the bill for keeping themselves safe, and sea lanes free of pirates. Something China has benefited from greatly. Our past poltiicans have left us with responsibilities I would love my nation to pull out of.
      Fixing the damage caused by our trading relationship with China and others, but most notably China, is one of the major factors of fixing our house. Stopping the flow of illegals, and deporting many of the unneeded and illegal wards of the state is another. Hell, a large portion of the Visa over-stayers we need to deport come from China, among others of course.

We invented the electronic ignition system for Ford. Ford retails the control module for $350.00 each. If manufactured in the US it cost $180.00 per unit. So it was sent to Japan and the cost per unit dropped to $5.00 each. The new profit was $345.00 minus shipping which is margin-able at 200,000 units in an 8x8x40 shipping container for $1,600.

      In the 70s, for Japan’s total economy to surpass the US, each Japanese person had to be 2.5x as productive and wealthy as an American citizen (Japan’s population size is so much lower). In the 80s and 90s, the Japanese citizen earned and produced roughly 1.8-2x the American citizen before it peaked and its economy stagnated. Its economy reached 70-80% of the US with a much smaller workforce. So yes, Japan failed to surpass the US in total economy but it developed pretty darn fine.
      What does it take for China to surpass the US given its huge population size? Each Chinese person has to only be 0.25x as productive. If Chinese people even become 0.7x as productive (more than reasonable to assume they will given economic convergence of developing countries), China will be well more than 3x as powerful economically as the US. If China reaches 90s Japan levels of prosperity and achieve productivity per person of 2x as much as Americans, China’s total economy will be more than 8x as large as the US.
      Still think the China story is the same as the Japan story?

The Chinese manufacturer's rep will then say, *"we make; you like"* -which is a hard translation of the Chinese characters equivalent to a "Western" business handshake- and then you get what you ordered. Very streamlined compared to the "domestic" manufacturers where you're paying product engineering fees, and setup fees, and going through the UL ISO ANSI bullshittery -almost as though domestic manufacturing _doesn't want your business_ ...and by the time containerfuls of the Chinese product arrives -manufactured _to your exact spec_ may I add- you haven't even entered domestic production with the domestic manufacturer you met at that same trade show... Chinese factories have a huge advantage over American factories. And it’s simple.
    If you manufacture a product in America, you can easily be sued. Product liability, discrimination, pollution, union disputes, and OSHA violations.
    But if you open the same factory in China, it’s almost impossible to get sued. No attorney will take-on a case involving a factory in China because the cost of litigation is so high. All the costs have to be paid by the litigant.
    As a result, locating a factory in China is the only logical thing to do. The Chinese government protects its industries. Employees are nice, the wages are reasonable, and there’s no litigation.
    In America it’s the opposite. Angry uncooperative minorities, a voracious federal government, and millions of attorneys looking for a lawsuit.
    To fix the problem, we need to cancel the entire legal and tax code. That means all of it, down to the last piece of paper. And we also need to end the practice of contingency law, and class action lawsuits. Those people are swindlers. And finally, we need to end corporate personhood. A company isn’t a person.

    My mom use to work for a company that worked with white label "brands" and would have the products sold through Amazon in the US. She told me how stressful yet interesting it was because there are other countries competing for this market as well and other white label companies wanting in. She was a a global supply chain manager so she oversaw basically products going in and out of the country. It was really cool. But it is true though that sometimes the cultural differences do get in the way. That's why having a US based company help out with the design process is really key to having successful products sold here. Americans like brands, flashy boxes, a good logo, etc. All of that goes into how we buy things.
    As a side note, it was fun when she worked there because I got to try out prototype stuff and give my feedback on it since my Mom didn't really use consumer electronics like I did. So it was fun. Interesting video. The global economy is insane.

Then selectively remove the mask in the shape you want (or block the mask from attaching in those specific spots in the first place)
      Then essentially electroplate the slab with gold to create the components.
      Repeat this a few thousand times for each layer.
      With some gross simplification, that's essentially it.
      We don't place each atom, but instead rely on chemistry to deposit the atoms in the shape we want. How the shape is created using the mask substance, I'm not entirely sure, may be lasers or etching of some sort.

      mage7 yeah, I mean things like your laptop or phone will reach a limit on processing power because eventually we will reach that limit and there is only so big you can make a phone or laptop before people will stop buying it.
      Of course there are developments in quantum computing which may allow for computers millions if not billions of times faster than today but they will probably remain those giant super computers that take up whole rooms, because I don't think they can be easily programmed to do a specific task like run a game (but don't quote me on it)
      so our phones and laptops will likely just be regular old boring computers with transistors with so few atoms you could count them on your hands.

    • @postvideo97
      @postvideo97 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Quantum computing is not yet accessible due to two main reasons:
      1- Quantum noise is too prevalent in high-temperature environments, unless we find a way to reduce the impact of the noise, all quantum computers have to be cooled down to near absolute zero. So unless you can cool your cellphone down to near absolute zero, forget mobile quantum computing.
      2- Quantum computers cost too much to make. Each quantum gate costs significantly more than a traditional Boolean gate. Just like how transistors used to cost much more, quantum gates costs a lot right now.

    In ancient times the 4 Chinese Dynasties were one of the most economically and culturally developed regions in the entire world during the feudal era. With the advent of the industrial revolution, china's feudal leaders did not want enterprising and proclaimed themselves as rulers through the mandate of heaven(天命:heaven's will)
    But the First and second industrial revolutions left china severely behind. As a result, China began to be invaded by Western countries, political sovereignty was severely interfered,the economic foundation collapsed, and the people's living standards and thousands starved to death .With the outbreak of China's domestic revolution, the communist party ruled and led china, and China's politics gradually became independent. In terms of economy, before china implemented reform and opened up, people's lives were still miserable and unsustainable. China has a population of over 1.3 billion with India. This is incomparable to the rest of the world.
    It is the first principle that people's lives could be improved.
    What use is These fragile ideals of "rights", "freedom","equality", "democracy" when people don't have food to eat,a roof over their heads,basic healthcare, education
    When people don't have access to these basic necessities a human needs to sustain life. When faced with hunger, people I believe will choose food over democracy.
    No government is perfect I admit but these goes to show that the general direction of the government's policies are in the right direction as in 3 decades it has significantly increased people's living standards
    While the country is still what I called a 2nd world country (where you have both first and 3rd world conditions), Hundreds of millions already have gotten out of poverty. That's the main reason why most Chinese people don't buy into the democracy first approach. When your country was once great, but fell into disarray due to foreign invasions, you tend to ignore recommendations from those same countries.

      Lower-cost and lower-skilled labor will definitley move away, but China is getting very good at medium-skill production as their country is getting more educated and so a good amount of electronics manufacturing should stay in Shenzhen as it is more medium-skill. Things like textile production have no real chance of staying in China since it's low-skill.
