Learn THIS Scale (know them all) ★ Acoustic Tuesday

  • In this video, I'm showing you 1 scale pattern that can work for (almost) all scales! In addition, famed guitarist David Grier is going to answer some hard-hitting questions, you'll get a behind the scenes look at NAMM, and Tom Sands is showing you a guitar made from a legendary tree!
    In the first segment, I want to reinforce the idea of learning a scale shape rather than a scale itself. Instead of memorizing notes, memorize a pattern or shape to learn scales - and then apply them to different parts of the fretboard!
    I'll show you the EXACT shape you need to learn all scales. Just remember that if you want to play a minor scale, just start that major scale pattern on a different note other than the major 1st - be sure to watch the whole video to understand what I mean!
    Be sure to leave a note in the comment if this method worked for you...I always love to hear if you have any breakthrough moments on your guitar journey!
    /////
    Up next, I want to ask you a question: have you heard of "The Tree" Mahogany?
    Here's the thing...
    There's this ancient tree that was felled in the rainforest almost 60 years ago. The tree couldn't be recovered at the time, but once it finally was, the loggers were shocked at the quality of the wood inside "The Tree."
    Many luthiers, furniture makers, and other artisans quickly realized how beautiful this specific Mahogany tree was. In addition, the luthiers understood that the tonal quality of the wood was unparalleled.
    Now, many guitars have been made with the wood from "The Tree," including Santa Cruz guitars.
    Today, I'm featuring Tom Sands' Model M Family Tree guitar. You DO NOT want to miss Tom's breakdown of his stunning guitar.
    /////
    To give you the behind the scenes of NAMM 2020, Brendan from ‪@HeartbreakerGuitars‬will take you on a tour of dozens of different acoustic guitar vendors.
    Everyone from ‪@georgelowdenguitars‬to Santa Cruz Guitars to ‪@BreedloveGuitarCo‬was at NAMM this year, and Brendan was able to deliver some candid interviews of some big names in the industry!
    /////
    Last but not least, I was able to get David Grier to answer a few questions. Previously, David Grier was featured on Acoustic Tuesday #113.
    To be honest, David is incredibly inspiring and his twists on melody and flatpicking are so awesome.
    Today, David is going to answer some of the questions that you guys have for David Grier!
    Be sure to watch the full episode today to hear all of David's comments.

    I can so identify with your guitarsenal dilemma with Whitney. When you put my guitarsenal on display and then I proceeded to show my wife afterward, she had no clue I owned so many guitars! It's amazing what you can't discern when looking into a closet stuffed with all black cases, lol.

    Hey all, after watching Tony last week I was curious about "The Tree Guitar" , I live in the Boston area and was lucky enough to have found one at The Music Emporium (thanks to your tip) on a day trip with a band mate while we were visiting music stores . Joe at the Emporium was very graciuous to us and and although it was sold ( 20K ?)he did give us a very informative description and offered to let me play it , although I didn't . What a treat ! Also thanks for that , also big shout out to a couple local shop owners who are really keeping the spirit alive and are very knowledgable ,Joe at Performance Music Center ,Woburn Ma and Eddie Carlino Carlino Guitars in Medford who is a real renaissance man building his own instruments and custom straps with a world of knowledge .These guys spent hours with us and if not for your show and TAC getting me back into the guitar I would never have met . This is a great community ! Thanks Tony

    I would love to go to a NAMM show - so many great guitars (I am so drooling for the new Bourgeois 00-14 fret cutaway...) I've been fortunate enough to talk to several session players - all of them will tell you the capo is indispensable! Great episode (again)!

    Speaking of Breedlove, Tony, I'd - no, I'll just go ahead and say - WE'D love it if you can review more Breedlove guitars. They are so well made, they play and sound do nice and their price point is ridiculous. So, please please show us a couple!! You da man!

    I know this may be hard to believe, but I called my luthier to inquire about where the wood came from that made my guitar. To protect his identity, I’ll refer to him as Martin. Well Martin told me that the wood for my guitar actually came from a fallen tree called The Log. It was the actual log that the quick brown fox jumped over. All of the wood from The Log has now been consumed making my guitar very, very rare. I wouldn’t sell it for the world. Well, unless someone offered me something ridiculous like $2 million. I guess would consider it. Anyone? I’ll throw in some extra picks and strings. No case included.

    Fun show again this week Tony, I'm voting for David Grier on the capo platform. Just saw that David Bromberg's new album is getting close to showing up, not sure how much of it is acoustic, and how much is electric, but I'm ready. I'm curious about the Breedlove guitars, I grew up on the Oregon coast and Breedlove makes guitars with Oregon Myrtle, which comes from the area I grew up in, and I've seen a few, but would love if you could let us hear one of these. Have you featured Levi's playing yet? Anyway, as usual, keep up the good work.

    Hey, Tony here is a suggest to back up your statement that the capo is a valuable tool for making good music. Give your viewers examples of guitarists that use the capos starting at the fifth fret and going beyond. My example is one of our favorites David Rawlings.

    It might be helpful for viewers to know the notes in the scale in the context of intervals on the fretboard.

    I literally figure out what note I’m playing by counting the notes from the shape of scales. Reading music never made sense to me. I just remember the shapes.

  • @jimdoner3443

    Tony why would they take that wood from "the tree" and build it as a laminated guitar yikes. But I'm sure it's because I don't understand what he has done, maybe you could explain the differences in construction or have the builder on. Why not solid back and sides? I'm getting geeked less than seven hundred left to pick up my Taylor 652ce it's not made from the Tree but she's a beauty. Now if that lap steal had v class bracing it would be a Ford v6 but alas a straight 6 it was meant to be please light her up for us.

    The diagram looks like it starts on F# 🤔

    • @tacguitar
      @tacguitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great observation Brian :-) The beauty is in the shape of the scale... yes, it is diagrammed starting on F#, but the shape itself is completely moveable, the note in red is what you consult to name the key :-) I hope this helps explain a bit more, happy pickin!!! Cheers, Tony

    • @jorigg6912
      @jorigg6912 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tony: I understand your explanation and the diagram, but they don't seem to go together -you started by talking about a scale beginning on the 5th fret of the low E string - the diagram doesn't show anything there at all. Not trying to be hyper-picky, just trying to tie it all together ........

    • @tacguitar
      @tacguitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No worries Jo :-) I hope you all are staying warm and not buried in snow up in Helena :-) I used that diagram in hopes that it would drive home the shape idea/approach to the scale. Another way to modify that illustration would be to extend the frets out in either direction. This way you'd just be looking at the shape and not necessarily applying it to any certain fret. I hope that clears things up or at least helps the example pack a bit more of a punch :-)

    • @jorigg6912
      @jorigg6912 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not much snow up here (yet!) and not too cold so far. Like I said, I understand what you are doing, but that's thanx to FW(!). That diagram ties in perfectly with the new "negotiating the fretboard" course - did you plan that? (There's usually method to your madness!)
