    The best ever!

With so many strong horses following a slow pace, the risk of falls was significant. Since there were so many horses at the end who thought they had a chance to win. Would have been an even better race if some minor horse took the race out harder. In that case I think Naturalism might have won as he was near unbeatable that year.

Palace Reign seemed to just break down as was in the clear when fell so maybe just one of those rare things that happen. Even though Naturalism was dominate in the lead up runs, it wasn't beating the best so I feel Better Loosen Up, Super Impose and Let's Elope may have swamped him last 50m but we'll never know.

@@australianhorseracing4019massive call considering Naturalism would go and run a brilliant 2nd in Japan Cup... Blu wins 3 ws if he doesn't bow his tendon...he was busted afterwards

Super was a great horse in his own right he turned up every time he raced he deserved this victory if you gave super an inch he took a yard he was that good a horse no matter how good the opposition was.

Totally agree. Raced in a great era of many great horses - my favorite was Better Loosen Up - but always enjoyed watching Super race and storm home. Like most top horses, he could make a strong 700-800m run, which is maybe why the big fields in Handicap races suited bit better.

Yeah good point it was a shame Better got injured he was never quite the same after that but by gee when he was on he was on.@@australianhorseracing4019

After the fall, if Lets Elope goes straight she wins and there's no protest? But if she goes straight, Better Loose Up gets the run and he wins? What a race...I loved Naturalism and hoped he would win...then when all is said and done...a great horse like Super Impose wins...you couldn't write that script...

Better Loosen Up was robbed. He was 3-0 head to head against Super Impose before his tendon injury and this race.

Lots of ifs & buts in the race, but if Better Loosen Up got outside of Super then good chance he wins - as with you, I was hoping he would win. What if Naturalism got clean run instead of falling. Even Rough Habit may have featured in finish if didn't get affected by the fall. Just a fantastic field overall.

@@australianhorseracing4019 I love Rough Habit but he was a noted mud larker and at his best on heavy tracks. He was at the back of the field at the time and I wouldn't back him over BLU in a sprint down the home straight on that dry track.
      >Naturalism
Even if he didn't fall he wasn't a sure thing as the field was compressed at the time and it's assuming that he'll get a clear run at the end. He had his chance the following year in a much weaker field and he failed. He had 2 cracks at the Japan Cup as well and although he did well in his first attempt he couldn't do what BLU did in Japan.
It was a shame that BLU's regular rider Clarke was suspended and Simon Marshall made the wrong decision not to go outside Super at the home bend. If he did BLU with his superior sprint over Super is odds on to win. Simon Marshall said on tv a few years ago when BLU came back to the Valley as a guest that BLU had forgiven him for that Cox Plate ride. Marshall knows it was his error that cost BLU a second Cox Plate.

Better Loosen Up unfortunately never was the same horse after his bowed tendon injury..He might have won 3 ws cox plates in a row

Great race saved by SUPER IMPOSE if LET'S ELOPE had've won then lost the protest it would've been horrific for the history of the greatest race in Australia for me there's nothing better than the W.S COX PLATE

Has there has ever been a stronger field of horses assembled?

    • @australianhorseracing4019
      @australianhorseracing4019  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Don't think so. 2002 Cox Plate was very strong but the depth of 1992 is superior in my mind. A shame 1992 Melb. Cup was very wet track with Let's Elope scratched as that was another elite field with Better Loosen Up, Super Impose, Veandercross, Mannerism and few other well credentialed horses.

The 1973 Marlboro Cup field was pretty strong, which Secretariat smoked in world record time on a hand ride.

Naturalism without a doubt incredibly unlucky. Would have won by a couple of lengths

    • @australianhorseracing4019

Gutsy call to say Naturalism wins by couple lengths against this great field, if he didn't fall. Deserved to be favourite after thrashing rivals in lead up races so maybe 0.5 to 1 length win if got the luck. Few other unlucky horses in this race.
