- Sunline truly was something else! Days out from the running of the Gr.1 Cox Plate, let's take it back to the year 2000 when the champion mare of the world dominated in astonishing fashion. Check out the reception she received from the crowd!
I’ve been to about 300 race meetings over the last 25+ years, and that was among the greatest I could have been at to witness, brilliant performance by a brilliant partnership- Greg Childs/Sunline and Trainer Trevor McKee 👍
She was pure class from day 1, thanks for the memories.

The OG Superstar Mare from Aotearoa NZ. My childhood and lifetime favourite horse, before Ethereal, Makybe Diva, Miss Andretti, Atlantic Jewel, Black Caviar, Winx and Verry Ellegant. A Warrior.

Watching Sunline parade this day was an unforgettable moment for me. I was at the valley for both her wins. But she knew exactly who she was on this day. Trained to the minute, her veins were pumping as she came past me and she was almost showing off. No surprise that she treated this field with contempt. What a horse she was. Watch the next year when Northerly beats her, you can see at the 100m mark at the head on camera that she knows he is goung to beat her, and she gets real pissed off and almost tries to bite him lmao. Great champ.
Scintillating Sunline...much like Winx second Cox Plate...imagine those two in that kind of form head to head in a Cox Plate!
What a race that would have been. With Winx's racing pattern its highly possible that she could have been left with too big a margin to make up. The thing is that we saw the very peak of Sunline in this race. She raced against 4 horses with better ratings than her own... Northerly, Lohnro, Jim and Tonic and Fairy King Prawn. Winx never raced against anything that good. So I'm not sure we ever saw her peak
@@bgardiner3354 yes it's fascinating to imagine, Winx v Sunline...I know Sunline never beat Northerly, I know she beat Fairy King Prawn, but what about Lonhro and Jim And Tonic...what was that outcome...thanks for replying Mr Gardiner, I see your comments regularly and respect your opinion...personally, as you indicated, Sunline could have beaten Winx taking into account their racing patterns...
@@nukmunnit3170 Sunline ran a very close 3rd to Jim and Tonic and FKP in a Dubai Duty Free... she had her excuses though and probably didn't get the breather that she needed ending up without cover and only pulling to the lead at the 4F mark. She was gallant for sure. Vs Lohnro they were pretty much 1 each. Arguably she was past her very best though by the time he was nearing his peak. There is a rating system called Incremental Velocity Ratings that measures a horse's progress in a race against the past performances for track and distance. Elite horses can run 10L ahead of the average. Only 3 horses have ever run better than 15... So You Think (15.3), Black Caviar (16.8), and Winx, a staggering 18L. While overall times are not a great indicator, her Cox Plate times were nearly 3 seconds faster. Sunline, Lohnro, FKP and J&T all could have conceivably beaten Winx... but they would have needed things to go their way... she really was something else. All goings, left and right handed... it didn't matter. It was a tragedy that she didn't go OS... while I understand the decision not to travel her i think the risk was worth the reward. Black Caviar didn't need to travel... the best sprinting competition in the world is here... but for Winx, she would have met far better competition in Europe.
