These are a much better value than the HDO’s, DJI digital seems like it would be amazing but I’m soo invested in analog that I couldn’t financially justify it. Great review 🤙
Thank you Steve, I agree, this is fantastic hardware for the price. Skyzone has really come a very long way in FPV. I remember when I started and they were just a small company making nowhere near anything like this. Hopefully they improve service/support.
But why? SKY04O has the same features as SKY04X headset, the only difference I believe is the OLED screen in the 04O has a slightly lower resolution and narrower FOV. I’d just be happy with them honestly, yea, most people just choose to spend $100 more on the 04x. The 04O are still a solid set.
@@JohnCuppi It's cause I use DJI for digital so these are only used for analog. In which case oleds mean nothing to me in reality and I'd just prefer a larger fov and higher res. But earlier I was messing around and recorded some videos and noticed there was audio in the playback.. It sounded good but would cut out completely sometimes. It seemed like going out a certain distance and it would cut out for good. Have you ever had any experience with Skyzone having audio like that? I mean, if it has it in the DVR I don't know why it wouldn't have it live.
@@Magneticitist 04x has the headphone jack for audio output but I have never ever used it. Not sure why audio would mute/cut mid-flight. Is this happening on mix mode or diversity mode? Most of my micro analog VTXes do not have a microphone so I have little to no experience with this. Sorry.
@@JohnCuppi Yea the audio out definitely works for listening to the audio coming from AV in but the thing is advertised as having no audio channel on the receiver. I read someone else make that complaint in a review as well. They bought it for audio then realized it didn't support it. Nice review 👍. I looked at tons of different goggle brands, specs, reviews, and finally ended up with the SkyZone o4Ls. I just couldn't justify blowing any more cash than I did. Same as your o4x but lcos instead of oled. It was a big step up from my BetaFpv VR01s. Im enjoying the Skyzones so far and like that if your having issues with the mix receiver that sometimes you can fix it by changing to a different mix (IE mix1, mix2, mix3) and find a setting that will work good. I fly at work sometimes in a building full of concrete and steel so I can very easily get the red out or blue out and noticed that many times mix2 or 3 works best, but outside at my house mix1 works best. I have never had blue outs or other color outs when flying outdoors, but have used different mix settings to clear up interference. I have tried the Lumenier AXII patch set which does not appear to be very good for me. I found them to not be much better than stock dipoles. Changed to a Foxeer Echo2 patch and a Foxeer long lollypop with pretty good results. I have also noticed that little Firefly baby nano is pretty sketchy indoors unless on Mix 1 or 2. None the less it is nice having such a great set of goggles and so many settings to choose from. Have had them for about 5 weeks now and loving it. The DVR kicks butt.
Super thoughtful comment here, I appreciate it. So, I was extremely lucky and purchased these during an end of summer sale with a 15% off coupon and justified that to go with OLED, but you're right it's not necessary and you can save even more foregoing it. I'm in with these for the long haul, hopefully. About the mix1, mix2, mix3 modes. Mine don't have this. This is something that skyzone just quietly introduced into their newest batch of goggle receiver without telling anyone! I think they finally listened to the feedback that one mix mode was just NOT going to cover every single camera and vtx situation. The 2.3 beta firmware was their best attempt, but as you can see it still had some issues. Skyzone confirmed yesterday that there will be a completely new module that they are calling the Steadyview X for those who want to have the 3 mixing modes (mix1, mix2, mix3), as it is a hardware change in their receiver to enable it. It will be released within about a month, and will have a screen on it as well. I hope I can get it because I'd like to put it to the test.
@@JohnCuppi I really like the tuning option of the different mix settings. I hope you are able to get the new module as it does help quit a bit. Keep up the great reviews.
@@FpvBudgetBuilds I really like that too and it is what people in the skyzone facebook group have been asking for. A one size fits all mix mode just doesn't work. Thanks! I'm kind of slightly bummed that I put this review out only to find that skyzone is now releasing another module, which might finally address everyone's various problems with these. I wonder how they are going to handle swapping customers to this new receiver who request it, that have bad performance with steadyview.
Nice video. I've had mine Skyzone 04x V1 for months now. I love it and i'm using 2x Steadyview receiver module in Quad Diversity mode. It works even better clear video with longer distance. 😁
Quadversity is the best upgrade i've done so far, hoping to try HDZero next month when the new VRX and 1w VTX drop. Definitely give quadversity a try, John, you'll be super happy with the results, especially with some true-rc patches :)
@@parkswreckfpv3547 Thanks for the input! With skyzone coming out with an updated SteadyMix module in the next month or so (supposedly), I'm looking into picking that up and _hopefully_ it might allow me to do quadiversity using the module I already have. Fingers crossed.
@@JohnCuppi OH! good to know! I might have to replace the 2 i have now with the updated one, unless they are able to throw a firmware update to existing modules. At least then i'd have spares in case any went out ;) Happy flying!
really nice review man!! I went with the O4Lv2's due to the lower cost and I really love them. Also, one of my favorite non-image related features is the cyclic recording of the DVR and follow mode. Really nice to never run out of DVR storage and having start/stop automatically with the signal lock. As far as the module, any indication as to what Mix vs Mix1 Mix2 is within the RF normal mode? Havent been able to figure it out in documentation or anything online. One other thing to note is that if you go with 3rd party RF module, you loose the ability to change the band and channel from inside the goggle's OSD. You have to take them off and use the buttons on the module in that use case.
I unfortunately don't have mix1/mix2/mix3, that has just recently become a thing in the last month or so. Skyzone quietly did that. But it may not be doing much at all for you, accordinfg to skyzone. Here is a quote from Skyzone Daniel about it, when I asked about why some new goggles are shipping with the option of 3 different mix modes now, but they don't seem to do anything: _"...the MIX1/2/3 is for our new RX, should be ready this month" and he also stated "MIX1/2/3 is mix, the 3 different mix mode need totally new hardware design, we will release the new RX(steadyview X), which have screen on the receiver."_ ~ skyzone daniel on facebook So it's something to keep an eye on, but with your 04L or 04X and older steadyview module, it seems according to them it does nothing. I believe the mix1/mix2/mix3 modes were made to address the exact problem I complain about in this video, the one-size-fits-all mix software just doesn't work right with every setup. The latest 2.3 firmware is the best they've ever came up with, but even that has flaws.
@@JohnCuppi This is some incredibly helpful insight! It makes sense that it would be in preparation for upcoming VRX hardware as it didn't seem to change anything in my testing. I would for sure pick up a new VRX module compatible with the native OSD when it comes out as I have had that color issue you described on my Tinyhawk2. Seems to happen more often with linear VTX antennas. I keep meaning to try throwing a linear antenna on my module when using it to see if having a matching polarity might improve it, but I havent gotten around to that.
I just ordered the sky04x, should be here Monday! I've had the fatshart attitude v5 for over 3 years, and have never looked at another goggle. I got a nice bonus, and a raise, so I got myself some sky04x. I plan on putting either the walksnail, or hdzero vrx on them this christmas.
Hi John and thank you very much for your in hand video! I've just ordered a new Sky04x for my E-flite F16 and was wondering what would be the best FPV camera to pair with these fantastic goggles in your opinion, Thank you again! and thx again for this fantastic video
As always John a great in depth review, these goggles seem really good, in comparison to the Fatshark goggles in the same price range, better fps, receiver included, extra face plate and ease of use i know which ones i'd prefer. Thanks very much for sharing your honest opinions and first hand experience 👍
@JohnCuppi Glad to hear that you still have those goggles. I'm planning to get a pair before this years end. I have the Skyzone cobra x! I just discovered your video and will be subscribed. So, for now on whenever I visit TH-cam, I'll be sure to watch it and give it a like. Cheers!
What kind of build are you doing? If it’s a 5” go with a TBS Unify Pro. Foxeer Predator V4 or T-Rex seem to work fantastic also with the mixer. Always make sure all cameras are set to NTSC as well in the camera settings itself.
@@JohnCuppi Thanks, I'm going fixed wing with TX16s radio and Skyzone 04L goggles. Trying to figure out what works with what can be very frustrating being new to FPV and all.
Awesome Review 👏🏼 skyzone DVR is amazing. Fatshark dropped the ball to many times. Skyzone took the lead. It looks like your about to get more neighbors John. .I did all the good YT stuff👍🏼👍🏼
Yeah the SkyZone DVR is really fantastic! I already got comments on my previous videos about how nice the analog footage looked from it. The micro drone category (typically analog) definitely isn't going away any time soon, it just keeps growing. 💪 Thanks Chris!
Any issues with eyelashes rubbing the lenses? I liked the FOV and image quality of the HDO2s but quickly sold them because of that issue. It felt strange and quickly made the image blurry. I’ve just been using an analog adapter on DJI FPV goggles for analog the past few years but I’m considering these O4Xs as a dedicated whoop goggle.
By the way, the stuff about the rx in this video is outdated at this point -- as long as you buy new skyzones, the new rx is amazing. You might also want to wait if you can, I hear 100fps capable skyzone 04x are going to be launched soon.
Yeah you can do a lot of things to get better range for long range flights, crosshair antennas work best. Been flying some fixed wing recently with the skyzones, so doing a little more LR. 2 miles is easy for analog in a straight shot with no obstacles.
Hi John, Is this a good crosshair antenna ? Is there much to know about 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz ? on eBay www.ebay.com/itm/144741439346?hash=item21b3431772:g:s10AAOSwXVdjNIWH&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA4GH7ixWd1TjJzJ9m3PIipqCENBp9NdhH6T0vk43zlfpENDPbfeFZfRhukQm3MKMZYK%2Bd351CWdQdgQJ5qoaEhOrrb3USW1oPQXBnyaAregelnG3Cx6sIwvpTs%2F0EHADpgkoUTKYsFWyc42hkIR0ORcLfsz4vqul%2BzaXwoz1%2BfduoaQ1h8l21XRSBDwk6xM7zY28gKJ2BYxa7eYpb3bljs0pIRdctcuNKRJ7VYj5VGa8CcPE%2F8a8nxz9kd5nseF6wV0my3XOnHcCKVG8XavgP0a%2F%2BEyNZAxam%2FtpxXjCezV64%7Ctkp%3ABFBMzomW_fBg
Caddx issued a statement that the vista will not be end of life and that they’ll keep producing it. But that another major production / shortage is coming, so take that for whatever it’s worth. I agree that overall right now it’s a really tough time to decide on what to buy. Buying in to DJI V2 goggles right now is a huge risk with the leak of V3. Then you have HDzero who has stated their official goggle will come out, and that it’s going to support analog modules as well. I can more confidently say that I feel at least you’re not likely to see the HDzero goggle available to purchase until the end of this year, and even then supply may be limited. It’s honestly a lot simpler and cheaper right now to just get a cheap pair of Eachine EV800DM box goggles, stay with analog, and see how things play out at least over the next few months. I would say do that, this way you’re not hung up on which piece of expensive tech to buy into. Analog is not going away entirely any time soon, either. Digital is wonderful but is still costly, and supply chain issues overall are driving up costs and hindering parts availability. We were never dry on analog parts but it was a good 4 to 5 month period in 2021 that the DJ caddx vista and “good” DJI cameras were just GONE from the market. Kind of takes the whole confidence boost you get from digital down a notch when you may not have a replacement on hand when something breaks…
@@JohnCuppi this is good advice, I appreciate you for taking the time. Patience is not my strong suit and I was really trying to rush in before summer hits. Funny thing is I had already ordered a pair of 800dms weeks ago (not received yet) and already has something like the 04x / 04l plus module in a cart for checkout… tbh I would be super happy with the Dji system right now, if it wasn’t for the v3 clouding everything up
Rapidfire is the better receiver but will run you a cool $150. Skyzone has a new SteadyMix receiver coming out soon with 3 different mix modes and a screen (maybe backpack support for ELRS?) that might fully address some of the long standing compatibility issues, if I can get my hands on it I will review and test it.
Hey John, I have had the O4X for about 6 months. Is it worth getting the shark byte system. Also where can I buy the printer mount for attaching to the fan. I saw the link, maybe I looked at it wrong, but when I clicked it , it showed the filament used to make it. Thanks mike
Hey Mike. I have just finished a complete Shark Byte quad build this week with the brand new camera. I would say yes but right now wait to see what divimath/hdzero comes out with first in the next month or so. They are launching 3 brand new receivers, so keep an eye out. Also there are now two bind and fly drones you can purchase for the shark byte system and more are coming. I have the Mobula7 HD shark byte on the way for review as we speak! As for the mount, Mike, the link is a template that can be used with a 3D printer and instructions for printing the designed part. If you don't have a 3D printer, send me your address on facebook (We're friends) if that's okay and I'll ship you one of my extras!
Loooove that DVR!! Surprisingly in Australia it's cheaper to buy HDO2 and Fusion module with antennas than these... Weird but hey that's FPv pricing haha.
Do all dual receivers have that horrible line ghosting? You have it too and I also have a steadyview receiver... but mine is a bunch worse. Is this just how it is? Also... can you do me a weird favor and look at the pot on the bottom of your receiver and tell me if it is turned off center slightly or lined up straight up and down? I also CANNOT get my PC to recognize the receiver to update it.
Sure, I’ll take a look and let you know. To clarify about line-ghosting, do we mean the lines issue that was noted by Mad’s Tech in this: th-cam.com/video/7Vw1MWs_Rtk/w-d-xo.html or something else?
@@JohnCuppi Thank you. No something else. If I could drop pictures on here you would be instantly clarified. It basically looks like there are 5 or 7 different semi transparent images of the same edges of what you are seeing showing up, and occasionally at just the right angle they go away for a split second. This does not happen on my cheap little VR02 goggles. If you took your finger and moved it back and fourth, you get that effect of many fingers if held into the right light... kinda looks like that!
The HDzero VRX does not interact with the Skyzone DVR at all. It has its own dedicated micro SD card slot and DVR built into the VRX. So if you have V1 or V2, It doesn’t matter. So, yes.
Does anyone know what the difference is between the V1 and V2? Have so far only found out that the V2 probably has the 60fps DVR, unlike the V1 with 30fps DVR.
Hi Nice video can you please tell me can I upgrade my Skyzone04x to v2 can I just by the 60fps dvr and v3.3 fusion bord and its all god please tell me or do I need to by the new v2 goggels😢
@@thomasgilbert6924 Contact Skyzone about buying the DVR upgrade board. I am pretty sure they will sell it to you. Of course you can buy the 3.3 fusion board for the V1, it works with all Skyzone goggles, V1/V2/V3.
It’s no longer the best choice for analog and HDzero. The HDzero goggles are the best for analog and HDzero. The HDzero goggles also have a higher refresh rate (90hz) so they’re better for running walksnail too. They have a better analog deinterlacing method too. It comes down to how much do you want to pay for the better hardware. However, let’s do a cost breakdown. Sky04x are $529, HDzero goggles are $599. HDzero goggles are really $639 in my case… because it is $39 shipping for me to the United States from hd-zero’s website. While I can get skyzones in stock now with free shipping stateside. So, if you want analog with HDzero goggles you will need to factor in the cost of a rapidfire module ($100-$150). I’ll be generous and just add $100 for rapidfire assuming you can find a used one. All total for an HDzero and analog experience for me, choosing HDzero goggles would be $739 USD. All total for an HDzero experience with the skyzones would be $748 since you’d have to buy the VRX. The choice for flying HDzero is clear: buy the HDzero goggles, it’s the same price for lesser hardware. The biggest question is: do you WANT to fly HDzero? If you do not want to fly HDzero, and only want to fly analog then the skyzones are still a pretty good deal and you can sometimes get a good discount on them. You can sometimes get them sub-$500 too, when sites run 10% off coupon codes. That’s not really something I’ve seen with HDzero goggles yet. They are made in limited batches and you have to wait a while to get your order. The SteadyView v3 module which these goggles now ship with has also resolved the problems I mentioned in this video, I did an update regarding it. It’s also worth noting that means these goggles are still very much alive as far as Skyzone is concerned when it comes to development. But the displays are only 60hz which is probably the biggest limiting factor of them as a platform. If you have the $$$ though if you don’t plan to fly HDzero, their goggle is truly the “Swiss army knife” of FPV goggles so to speak. The software platform is open source. It’s currently the best goggle to run analog, the best for HDzero, and the next-best goggle to fly walksnail on if you want that too. So many things to consider. 🙃
Hi! Long shot, but... Mine does not turn on, straight out of the box, from neither 4S or USB. Came here to see if there's some obvious step i missed, some safety tab or something, but there's nothing apparent in the video. Anyone with a clue?
There is not 😞 they should just power up, no safety tab, etc. just the power button. Sounds like they are dead on arrival, if you can, let me know what the resolution for this ends up being if you have to reach out to Skyzone support.
@@derrickcollinsworth7631 i got confirmation from where i bought it that me opening it would not void the warranty. i did, found nothing, put it back together again - and then it magically worked. i would suggest trying to power it from the USB C jack, see if that works? (i later put in a cable with the wrong polarity and instantly fried the power circuit, but can still use it from USB C. they seem to be very separate ways of powering it )

@@JohnCuppi now you get a chance for an update video 😃✌
Haa I came from VR01s as well except I decided on the 04x 😅
Nice video. I've had mine Skyzone 04x V1 for months now. I love it and i'm using 2x Steadyview receiver module in Quad Diversity mode. It works even better clear video with longer distance. 😁
I really want to try quadiversity! Thanks for the comment! :)
Yeah, it works great! U definitely should try it. It's almost as good as Rapidfire module on Fatshark HDO2 goggles. 😊
At least then i'd have spares in case any went out ;)
Happy flying!
really nice review man!!
Here is a quote from Skyzone Daniel about it, when I asked about why some new goggles are shipping with the option of 3 different mix modes now, but they don't seem to do anything:
_"...the MIX1/2/3 is for our new RX, should be ready this month" and he also stated "MIX1/2/3 is mix, the 3 different mix mode need totally new hardware design, we will release the new RX(steadyview X), which have screen on the receiver."_ ~ skyzone daniel on facebook
So it's something to keep an eye on, but with your 04L or 04X and older steadyview module, it seems according to them it does nothing.
Awsome review thanks 😊
As always John a great in depth review, these goggles seem really good, in comparison to the Fatshark goggles in the same price range, better fps, receiver included, extra face plate and ease of use i know which ones i'd prefer. Thanks very much for sharing your honest opinions and first hand experience 👍
Definitely a lot of value here just considering hardware alone. 🤘 Appreciate it!
Awesome review!
Thanks! I still have these. They have been well worth it, and there was a fix for the receiver too.
Cheers!
Thanks, good vid. What is a good video transmitter for the Skyzone 04L? thanks
Trying to figure out what works with what can be very frustrating being new to FPV and all.
thanks! i just bought them!
You’re gonna love ‘em man. 👍
What are the major differences between the V1 and the V2 o4x?
60fps dvr is the only difference at this time.
Not for me. My eyelashes do not touch the lenses.
By the way, the stuff about the rx in this video is outdated at this point -- as long as you buy new skyzones, the new rx is amazing.
You might also want to wait if you can, I hear 100fps capable skyzone 04x are going to be launched soon.
@@JohnCuppi Gotcha. I appreciate the quick response!
Nice video can you do anything to extend range to 2 miles ? antenna reflector maybe or antenna receiver booster ?
Yeah you can do a lot of things to get better range for long range flights, crosshair antennas work best. Been flying some fixed wing recently with the skyzones, so doing a little more LR. 2 miles is easy for analog in a straight shot with no obstacles.
Hi John, Is this a good crosshair antenna ? Is there much to know about 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz ?

Can you mention a little about GPS return home and stabilized flight, Max. Range km , Max - height, Max Flight time, DVR
I learnt about Dynamic Tracking today - feature that allows drone to follow you. Not all drones have this feature yet.
Hi John , May I know does the quad diversity work with two ImmersionRC Rapifire modules ? Thank you.
No; quadiveristy is a feature of the steadymix receiver by Skyzone only :(
skyzone 04x and 04L prices are very different from each other. Is the Oled - Lcos picture quality worth the price difference? Thank you
To me, OLED optics are beautiful and worth it. They really make a difference to me in the visual experience.
What happens if I put a TBS fusion in the other bay? Does quadversity still work?
No. Quadversity is a skyone receiver feature only. You need two matching hardware revision modules (Ex: a 3.x and a 3.x module).
great review!!
Thank you sir 💪
With the Vista/ Dji v2 being end of life, really puts me in a weird spot if I want to enter the hobby right now.
Funny thing is I had already ordered a pair of 800dms weeks ago (not received yet) and already has something like the 04x / 04l plus module in a cart for checkout… tbh I would be super happy with the Dji system right now, if it wasn’t for the v3 clouding everything up
Another great review John. Wonder how that stock receiver compares to say a Rapidfire or TBS Fusion. Insane garage ripping at end!
Wow I didn’t know you can use sharkbyte on skyzones. Interesting thanks for that John. But you have to have a sharkbyte on the quads too correct
Correct 👍
Yeah that’s shocking! But if it’s that cheaper, I’d definitely go that route. Pretty much $499 with no receiver everywhere here in the US for HDO2.
@@glytch5 Do you have an email I can send the photo of my steadyview module back to? Send it to me in this format: name at email dot com
Can you use HDZero the same way on the V1 or the V2 ? Since the V1 has 30 FPS DVR but im not sure if that has anything to do with it
*sharkbyte
The HDzero VRX does not interact with the Skyzone DVR at all. It has its own dedicated micro SD card slot and DVR built into the VRX. So if you have V1 or V2, It doesn’t matter. So, yes.
Does anyone know what the difference is between the V1 and V2? Have so far only found out that the V2 probably has the 60fps DVR, unlike the V1 with 30fps DVR.
This is correct. There are no other differences between V1 and V2 otherwise.

Still worth buying a year on?
@@JohnCuppi brilliant reply 👏 I got some thinking and saving to to I think...anything updated from my gogs would be an improvement sky02C
Did you ever find a solution?
@@derrickcollinsworth7631 i got confirmation from where i bought it that me opening it would not void the warranty. i did, found nothing, put it back together again - and then it magically worked.
i would suggest trying to power it from the USB C jack, see if that works? (i later put in a cable with the wrong polarity and instantly fried the power circuit, but can still use it from USB C. they seem to be very separate ways of powering it )

@@FORTYVIII No, I didn't need to calibrate voltage at all. When you plug in a fully charged battery it should be reading the correct voltage of 16.8 for 4s, but if not the calibration option allows you to offset it by 0.1v just in case.
