I know that feeling all too well. "THE ONE" that got away. Mine was a double figure sewin first light on a light fly rod, went under a log/stump and snapped me after 15-20mins of teying to nurse it in😢😢You literally dream about fish like that.
Outstanding lads , great fishing. Rhys all I can say is cherish the days with your ol man . How I’d love a day in a boat with my dad ! Keep it going, outstanding 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🙌
I fished Rutland all through the nineties before moving to France, still my all time favorite water, I had a five an a half brownie off the dam ,and won the fur and feather with four rainbows for 19 lb 12oz. Great fish ,great memories .Even the French anglers at my local reservoir speak of it as the Mecca of reservoir fly fishing
Hi Rhys Enjoy those trips with your Dad. I had many great days on Corrib with my Dad but he passed away last year, its great to have the memories. You should give Corrib a few days sometime, savage Buzzer fishing around the Oughterard area for very big wild browns. Very good Caenis fishing too in the Cong / Cross corner of the lake. Paul
terrific video, I moved from Kent to Leicestershire about a year ago and my local fisheries are Elinor and Eyebrook. I've been to Rutland, which is about 30 mins away to have a look around but because I've no clue how to fish such a big, deep water I've not done so yet. Having watched you guys and learned plenty from this and your other vids I'm definitely going to give it a go, cheers!
Some fishing ,,,just showing it to my French grandkids,,,I've r I should say ,u have them hooked to give it a go,, thanks ,,, Fish lok great , like seatrout ,,Thanks lar
great video and editing as always ! it's been years since I fished Rutland last but must make an effort to get up there at some point this year. Keep the videos rolling 👍
@@RhysFishes I have been looking forward to meeting you for so long. But honestly I am sat hear now struggling to remember much. A few bits stick, but not much. This is why I bought a GoPro. Hey good luck with the up coming comps. Take care Rhys. Shaun.
Wasn't really horsing it, it was on a 7wt and realistically, even a 9wt wouldn't have been able to horse that fish, with a 7wt I was barely holding on. The error here was not playing it on the reel, which I've since learnt from. Tightlines
Great video guys, thanks. Used to fish Rutland from the boat every month back in the 70’s & loved it. Must go back. A question, were you using a drogue when drifting?
We used a drogue when the wind got up and no drogue when there wasn’t any wind. We didn’t bother anchoring as we were trying to cover as much water as possible
Rhys superb video as always when you and Jeremy are out on boat. How many rods do you take when going out on boat. A usually take 2 but am thinking just better take one.
One each usually. We’ll carry a third just if we’re playing with different methods. More roads on a boat causes more problems if I’m honest, less is more.
Hope that you can arrange a future session at Rutland with Lindsay Simpson as your boat partner. As it would compliment the vlog of him visiting your home favourite venue. Yes there are many other top class fly anglers that frequent Rutland Water. However this is his favourite water and I personally think it would make a great video. Boat safety is soo important especially on a body of water the size of Rutland. A change in weather even a slight variation in wind speed/ direction can change a mill pond into the North Sea in a foul mood. Same with rain/hail/snow you can go from clear vision for miles. To cannot see what is twenty feet away in mere seconds. Yes personal floatation ie life jacket is vital. So are good boat handling and navigation skills. Know how to use a compass. Or at least have a fully charged phone with minimum Google maps or navigational aid to help you to safely get back to the dock or at least to shelter or onto dry land.
Hi Rhys i just got a question. Do you use tapered leader or you just use a straigh flouro carbon say 6 lbs to -10 lbs 10-15 feet when you use a double glies like a washing line
Hi mate, ive got an airflo 12ft slow and i think an older airflo 6ft fast tip. Do i need any other do you think? I mainly fish the midland reservoirs now. Also what floating line do you recomend? Cheers
Airflo 12ft fast and 12ft slow, Rio midge tip will cover all your scenarios but I’d say the you can abandon the Rio midge if you have the 2 airflo’s. In terms of floaters, a few options; Cortland peach Snowbee xs Wychwood rocket New haylie floating line (Facebook)
Don't be fooled by big pike. They often just coast around for a few minutes like they don't know they are hooked and that's when you have to get sorted out and get all your line on the reel. Sooner or later they will run and if you have a load of line on the floor you've had it.
Big mistakes from experienced anglers, get the fish onto the F Reel lads, I cannot believe what I'm watching here the boat strewn with tangled fly line, nets falling in water, no hands to net fish because they are chugging lines through the rings playing fish with nil control, use F fly reel drag and use finger braking on reel gives total pressure control over large fish, these two are pure light weight Pond Pet Bashers. 🤣 When your boat partner is still fishing while your playing a fish is a no no where I come from a swift smack on the head with the landing net to curb their fish mongering enthusiasm is required 😂😂😂😂😂
Lightweight pond bashers 😂. Next thing you’ll be saying the sea was stocked with bass for my saltwater videos 🥱 Thanks for taking the time to watch anyway. Have a wonderful evening 👍
I find the videos produced by Rhys very helpful. I saw this video as one where two very good friends are fishing for fun, although competitively. Regular partners build up their own boat etiquette and we are all entitled to play fish in our own way as long as we are conscious of not harming them. It's a shame that those who share so much information and enthusiasm for their sport should be attacked and insulted in this way. Rhys; many thanks for your contribution to improving my fishing experiences and good luck with your own. Have fun, David.

Jeremy had the Rio gold and I was using the new haylie white floater 🙂
Hi Rhys i just got a question. Do you use tapered leader or you just use a straigh flouro carbon say 6 lbs to -10 lbs 10-15 feet when you use a double glies like a washing line
Straight through leader. Usually 18ft, 6/6/6
@@RhysFishes thanks
Was that a pickled onion crisp packet buzzer ? Heard they are quite good this time of year
No, mainly goose biot buzzers. But crisp packet buzzer would work just as well.

Hi Rhys, do you use a tapered leader, or is the leader straight off the fly line?
Straight through 8.8lb with no tapering
Great vid! Are you using tape on your rod hand finger for stripping?
Yes derek.
any more videos coming ?

Lesson learned this time. As it was my first tussle with a pike I learned the hard way but thankfully since then I’ve not had a reoccurrence
