SOME INSANE FACTS ABOUT TOP FUEL DRAGSTERS:
- Brittany Force holds the fastest run in NHRA's history: 545.47 km/h (338.94 mph), 3.641 seconds. A Ferrari Enzo or a NASCAR Cup car wouldn't even get to one-fifth of that speed in that time.
- A Top Fuel Dragster consumes as much fuel as a Boeing 747 which weights 412.000 kg (910,000 lbs).
- The cars are incredibly well prepared to protect drivers at those speeds. Racing a Top Fuel Dragster in the NHRA isn't more dangerous than racing in F1 or NASCAR.
- The sound is enough to cause physical pain measuring 2.3 on the Ritcher scale.
- The engines have to be completely rebuilt after a single run, same for the clutch. The tyres can do 8 runs though, so you would need 8 engines to wear a single tyre set.
- Teams can rebuild an engine in just 25 minutes.
- The exhaust gases produce over 500 kg (1100 lbs) of downforce which helps the dragster at launch.
- At top speed it generates 4000 kg (9000 lbs) of downforce.
- The tyres compress by up to 20 cm (8 inches) in diameter at launch, increasing the contact patch.
- Top fuel dragsters have carbon brakes as well as 2 parachutes to stop the car after they cross the finish line. Braking power isn't far off an F1 car.

a lot of the tuning also comes from the which thickness of copper head gasket teams use as well, depending on the track conditions, weather, etc. That's how finely tuned these engines can get. something as simple as the head gasket.
The Engine's design is a design that hasn't really changed since the 1950's. It's based on an old Chrysler Hemi engine design that dates back to the early 50's, and is about as simple of a V8 as you can get. it's a big ass 8.2L V8 basically, and the whole unit is about 100 grand, for the engine, supercharger, and fueling. Obviously the materials aren't 1950's materials (duh) but the engine is rather simple for a racing engine. Everything is also fucking massive, from the rods, pistons, bearings, and some of the valves are made from literal rocket alloys to take the heat.
Top fuel dragsters are incredible pieces of engineering.

One small note, Bob Tasca III in a funny car ran the fastest 1000ft pass @341mph but not the quickest at 3.840 in the Bradenton Motorsport Park All-Star Shootout earlier this year. ;D

But in the end they can only go in a straight line. Better then anything else, of course. Do you think it makes fun to pilot one of those? To step on the throttle for just 3.x seconds and getting the brain nearly pressed through the backhead? I'm not so shure... but i rather enjoy twisty roads... But hey, if nobody would like these extreme accaleration g- forces nobody would do that, and push these things as far as they do.

It's crazy to know the dragster's brakes are close to level with a F1 car.

@@FanBoyStudio369He's incorrect. Top fuel drag cars use carbon brakes. They can stop very good, even without parachutes. The only downsides is that they are going much faster, so they have much more stopped that they have to do, which can risk overheating the brakes and having failures, as well as tires make a difference in stopping distance, and drag tires don't stop as well as race slicks. Put slicks on a top fuel drag car and line it up next to an F1 car at 200MPH and have them both stop quickly. F1 car will stop quicker, but it won't be too far off.

Its tires have very bad wear and the engines on top fuel sometimes can’t even handle a couple of seconds on a drag strip. How would they to a 2 minute lap?

Could a top fuel dragster actually complete a single lap at Monza? Given the facts in the pinned comment, it seems like it'll be nonfunctional (out of fuel, blown engine) within the first or second turn.

It’d overheat and meltdown long before completing a lap. They run solid blocks with no coolant.
There are some drag cars that make about 4-5,000 hp and can drive on the street. But, once you optimize one for going straight it doesn’t like to turn. Then the more you make it turn the less it’ll want to go straight.

I think a lot of people don’t realize that top fuel dragsters don’t even have transmissions, the motor is direct drive to the wheels via a clutch, which coincidentally it destroyed every run. The nitromethane also burns so hot that the motor effectively needs to be rebuilt after every run.
It may be the one racing series we’re tires last longer than certain drivetrain components

This is a great way to show how insanely fast TF Drag Cars are in a straight line. Makes me wonder if there is a configuration of the chassis that could be made to get say...70-80% of the straight line speed and increase it's handling just enough to win. I'm sure some lunatic is working on something like that in a barn somewhere. haha
I would think the problem would be getting that power down once you make enough changes to have it turn decent. But, cutting them down to half power would still be 5-6,000hp.
Something like a funny car might work better since it’s shorter and has more weight on the front.
It would never work - The entire tank of gas gets used up in 3s of the race. They'd have to switch to a different fuel which would have nowhere near the same amount of HP.

Agreed. Something like a monster truck motor (big block, 14-71 or screw, on alcohol) would actually last. I'd be worried about the longevity of a pro mod motor but I don't know enough about them.
Not sure what that chassis would look like...taking turns with that much power would probably start requiring comically large parts compared to what road course cars generally have

The main problem for the dragster would be carrying the fuel required for that long of a run, even allowing that the car was at idle for much of the lap. It would something around 750L (200 gal.) of nitromethane. Besides the size of the fuel tank that much nitro would weigh about 850 kg (1875 lb.).

So....how many times did the dragster use it's single use clutch? Also....how much fuel was a car designed to run for 1/4 mile actually manage to carry? That's ignoring the fact that you had it slow like it had chutes out....but did not.

TFD would be outte fuel at the end of first straight, after shut down, it will detonate motor if you get back in throttle, ain't make any corners, turning radious is complete shit by design, has no gears and the clutches would be wielded togather,,, but amusing to see. A real dragster can't turn like it... probably not even the turn radius, no matter how slow, and it should be sllooooowwwwwww. And a RL Dragster would break before the end of the second straight. But fun video anyway
this is STUPID- a top fuel dragster would never even make it around the track- You do realize they are direct drive- they can't shift up and down gears- it all relies on the clutch -
that's why you should never compare your son/daughter with other people, because they have different capacity, you can't compare sumo with usain, etc
This is kind of stupid. The truth is if you run a funny car or a dragster sitting on the tree waiting for green light and the nascar car is running at a speed of 200 mph and the drag car leaves at the same time car goes by the dragster will beat the car in the 1/4 mile. Also the top fuel uses 12 gallons of nitro every run.

You’d have to really stack the rules for the NASCAR. A super speedway oval and no restrictor for the NASCAR and highest downforce with no DRS for the F1. At that point it’d be close because the top speed of the F1 would be so low.

The new car is basically an Aussie V8 super car underneath. The traditional stock cars weren’t great for road racing, but this version is basically made for it.

I did 2:30 (standing start like in this video) using the downloaded version of the top fuel dragster. How much is this version modified, compared to the downloaded one? (Top FUEL 11500 HP Dragster 1.0 at former RACEDEPARTMENT)
Believe it or not, the limiting factor on this race, is fuel. A top fuel dragster only holds enough fuel for a 1/4 mile run and the engine pretty much destroys itself as it goes down the track. So even if this were a possibility, this race would be over in under 10 seconds.
If you were to modify the dragster to be able to actually do this, you'd need to detune the engine so much that its top speed would be nearly the same as the cup car even though it would get there much faster. This would also be because of the added fuel weight needed to complete the course. The last hurdle though would be the lateral G forces. The front suspension is not built to turn the car that much at high speeds. This circuit would likely break the front suspension in the middle of the first lap.
Yeah I turned off tyre wear, fuel consumption and mechanical damage. Otherwise the race would be over at T1 lol

Top fuel Dragster vs Porsche 917k at Historic Le Mans. 3 lap race Because there are no chicanes down the Mulsane strait, the 917k gets 1.5 lap head start.

nascars suck at turning, but they can turn and corner way better than a dragster. There's a reason they're built to cannon people down a straight extremely fast, and not ask to turn at all.
