    Funny Car is a type of drag racing vehicle and a specific racing class in organized drag racing. Funny cars are characterized by having tilt-up fiberglass or carbon fiber automotive bodies over a custom-fabricated chassis, giving them an appearance vaguely approximating manufacturers' showroom models. They also have the engine placed in front of the driver, as opposed to dragsters, which place it behind the driver.[1]
    Funny car bodies typically reflect the models of newly available cars in the time period that the funny car was built. For example, in the 1970s, then current models such as the Chevrolet Vega or Plymouth Barracuda were often represented as funny cars, and the bodies represented the Big Three of General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler.[2] Currently, four manufacturers are represented in National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Funny Car - Chevrolet with the Camaro,[3] Dodge with the Charger,[4] Ford with the Mustang,[5] and Toyota with the Supra.
    The first funny cars were Super Stock 1964 Dodge 330 Max Wedges, named the "Dodge Chargers", prepared, at the behest of Don Beebe, by Dragmaster's Jim Nelson and Dode Martin.[13] Raced in the Supercharged Experimental Stock (S/XS) class, their original 426 Max Wedges were replaced by stroked 480 cu in (8 l) Top Gas engines (virtual clones of the Top Gas Dodge Dart engines also built by Dragmaster).[17] (Thus, they were technically "funny gassers", not fuel cars, unlike the later examples.[10]) Despite their fuel limitations, however, they were turning in E.T.s in the high 10s, with speeds around 130 mph (210 km/h), when Super Stock and FX cars were only running 11s at about 120 mph (190 km/h), clearly a winning edge.[10] They would also be the first factory cars fitted with parachutes, and the first to see the drivers wear firesuits.[10]
    The first major altered-wheelbase car was Dick Landy's class-legal SS/A 1964 Dodge Coronet,[dubious - discuss] which had front and rear axles moved radically forward, a high gasser-style front end and axle, and a 426 hemi. It moved the rear wheels forward 15 in (380 mm), the front 10 in (250 mm), and 80 lb (36 kg) worth of fiberglass parts (including hood, instrument panel, doors, front fenders, front deck lid, front bumpers) replaced steel.[12] First appearing at the AHRA Winternationals at Phoenix, Arizona, 29-31 January 1964, the combination improved E.T.s from low 11s with speeds in the 120 mph (190 km/h) range to 10.60s at almost 130 mph (210 km/h).[18] Only twelve were built.[19]
    The three Chargers, wearing a color scheme of red body sides and white roof, hood, and trunk, with two blue longitudinal stripes,[15] were driven by Jimmy Nix, who previously ran a Top Gas dragster; Jim Johnson, who ran a Dodge Polara stocker, and who had won the B/SA title in 1963; Jim Nelson; and Dode Martin. (Nix tried to persuade Chrisman to get Mercury Racing Director Fran Hernandez to allow him to run his Comet's 427 on nitro, as a way to gain leverage on NHRA, so Nix could use nitro himself)
    For their part, the Dodge factory spent only US$250,000 on the inaugural season, insufficient for a single car, let alone three.

    This was the first fuel Funny Car to break into the 6's. Leroy Goldstein ran a 6.98, to be first in the 6's. Great moment in drag racing history.

    Beautiful kit! Love the burpose-built body. Other kits from this Era have stock bodies with actual door handles on them.
    Preprinted tires -- what a luxury. And that transmission tunnel behind the engine is probably a 2-speed Lenco transmission.
    Nice build, Chris.

    Great build Chris. Nice save on the rocker panel decal. That one almost got away. To those that dismiss MPC kits you're missing out on some great kits. MPC put out models that other companies didn't.

      Thanks, the MPCs tend to work out well for me but I love box stock as-is builds so I'm not needing the absolute in scale perfection.

    I sure wish my paint jobs came out like yours. I followed your directions, used the same paint, first one came out all orange peel. Stripped that, tried again, plastic melted in parts. Plus more orange peel. Tried polishing, wet sanding with 2500 grit paper. no luck. AMT International 4070A kits.

    It seems you glued the back wheel two halves together before putting the tire on. Why do you do this? I'm just wondering....

    • @urbanurchin5930
      @urbanurchin5930 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He will tell you, "just personal preference". He does this on all of his kits - if the tires themselves are flexible enough to stretch over the rims.

    • @randytaylor1258
      @randytaylor1258 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It also gives the glue joint time to cure before the tires get mounted.

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Since I'm using super glue, if I glue it as I'm putting the tires on there is a good chance the glue will fog the tires.
      Hollow tires are easy to stretch over so I glue the wheels together before I mount the tires most cases.
      Solid tires I will press in the wheels from each side. If they fit loose I use rubber cement to hold them.

    I love the work you do. Wish I still had the nerves to build like I did as a kid. Being a funny car fan from the sixties and seventies there is one thing you seem to miss. You paint the aluminum work. The piece that fit under the body is aluminum. No funny car I ever saw painter the aluminum work.

      Like Tamiya airbrush thinner, Pledge/Future lays down as it dries rather than just acting as a clear coat.

    • @hpiguy

      Two coats has sufficed for 99% of the kits I do.

    Beauty build. BTW - about the armature you use to wear your tires - is there a 1/24 scale armature also? Where can I find them? (please be laughing about now). But no kidding, the kit came out looking very nice. Thanks for doing this!

      I don't remember Chris commenting, but I think he uses a long ratchet wrench socket -- pick the one that fits your tires.
