    When I was a boy, I played Winthrop in my school's elementary play. Now that I'm older, the nostalgia hits hard and brings a huge grin to my face. Also, Broderick took a little getting used to, but I think they cast him and Chenowith perfectly (but that's just my opinion.) Chenowith has some wonderful pipes! Sing woman, sing!

      i love the irony in "it's a large plot point that hill doesn't know one note from another" while he is in a musical and therefore the audience sees him singing and dancing like nobodys business. the way he gets the schoolboard to be a barbershop quartet demonstrates he has solid relative pitch & rudimentary conducting basics at LEAST. silly billy. perhaps his motivation in being a con man rather than a legitimate music man(tm) was more laziness than a genuine lack of ability...

    • @ThePianoMan1953
      @ThePianoMan1953 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@lakeswirl6985 That’s a brilliant observation and so true. But if one wants to make sense of the statement, “you don’t know one note from another,” you could explain it as referring to him not knowing where the notes are on the band instruments themselves. Anybody can whistle or sing (which, of course, he could do very well.)
      I’ve wondered too, why people love the “con man” so much? I think people admire him because he is so good at what he does (even though it is dishonest.) And, being attractive and charming doesn’t hurt.

    • @briansounalath
      @briansounalath ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ThePianoMan1953 I don’t think everyone can sing. At least not naturally. Many can with training. And not everyone can whistle either. Maybe the draw to conmen is the same as the draw to badboys. A lot of people fall in love with murderers and convicts too.

    I was cast as Marian for my musical! I'm so excited! Even though all the odds were against me, I nailed my audition and got the role! Those high notes on My White Knight and Goodnight My Someone will really make my performance. I perform in a few months!
    Edit: My best friend also got a lead! She got the part of Amaryllis. I am so excited to do the Goodnight My Someone Scene with her! And she's excited that she gets to call me an old maid in front of hundreds of people.
    Second Edit: One month away from opening night. I have gotten my costumes and I am so excited! I love Music Man. The original film is better than the remake, just saying. But this one is also a great film, you just can't replace the original.
    Third Edit: Opening night is in 6 days. STRESS!!! But it'll be great! I need more sleep...
    Fourth Edit: We closed the show last Saturday and I am so sad about it. I loved the show so much. To any people out there who are pursuing theater or are in a production right now, ENJOY EVERY MINUTE because it's only there so long until it's gone. Music Man will always hold such a special place in my heart, it's the best show I've ever done. The shows went amazing and I can honestly say it was the best thing I've ever done. The happiest 4 months of my life. MM helped me get through the hardest time in my life! But it was also the happiest time in my life. The contrast is interesting. It was the hardest time but it was the happiest I've ever been. I LOVE MUSIC MAN. Music Man FOREVER.

    I have the 1962 movie version on my regular viewing rotation. I've been in love with Shirley Jones for nearly 50 years. When this version came out, I didn't even give it a chance. But now, over 15 years later, I've watched it with a less prejudiced perspective and find it ultimately satisfying and emotional, especially at the end. The producers made numerous fundamental story changes which have effectively separated this fine adaptation from its incomparable predecessor with grace, style and finesse. I Thank You for putting this out for viewing.

    I know I’m late but I heard from the Musical just the day when I decided to see Hugh Jackman on Broadway at the beginning of 2020. Now its 2022 and I’m still a proud ticket holder but hadn’t the chance to travel from Germany to New York through all the Covid restrictions and all.
    In preparation I watched the original movie with Preston / Jones and was so impressed…What a wonderful story with great actors and cheerful lovely music. I wasn’t familiar with any of that, but I was especially impressed by Robert. He was so charismatic, cheerful, loud, and convincing that it’s impossible for anybody not to find him absolutely credible as a salesman and as an actor of a salesman.
    I found it a wonderful classy musical film made in 1962 a period which I love to see movies because I’m a massive Elvis fan. (He’d had been a wonderful Harold Hill, too)
    And then I found out about the 2003 adaption off the musical movie. I decided to watch it not caring very much which actors would have been in the cast. While the train scene at the beginning was rolling, I recognized this cigar smoking man who was just seen from nose to chin…This lips which holding this cigar looked quite familiar to me….
    And wow how cool was that when I was finally recognizing that Matthew Broderick was giving the MM. It’s so amazing what authenticity he gives to the role of Harold. I was really amazed how different the Harold can be taken and how good both can be in their own way.
    The Harold of Matthew was smooth, sweet, and cheeky. It is the perfect version for television because you see his cute doe eyes, pouty lips in every close up and hear his mesmerizing voice. He shows a totally different way of salesmanship, subtle and charming.... less obvious than Preston’s way but soooo convincing to me. His uhhh and ahhs while praising Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn’s raising of her feet are priceless to me.
    I love that Matthew gives Harold a bit of his own personality and interpretation. I was surprised of his beautiful soft singing voice because I never saw him as a Broadway actor… This very many tongue twisters he did with perfection and facility as much as he does dance ….I simply loved to see him dancing and singing through the story…especially the dance with Marian during Social Ball rehearsals, the dance in the library and the dance between Marcellus Washburn and him during the cheerful ‘The sadder but wiser girl for me’ song.
    Almost unbelievable he was born at the time the original film was made and is only 3 years younger than Robert when he did his movie.
    To make a long story short, for me both version are very good material to get prepared for this beautiful stage play I never knew before…
    I partly understand why some of you criticise Matthew’s performance because he is absolutely no Robert. But he didn’t have to for me. He gives Harold his touch and I love it. And of course I adore Victor Garber and Molly Shannon together…Hilarious…
    Thank you Robert and Matthew for giving me the Music Man. Now I’m ready for Broadway and can’t wait for Hugh Jackman ermm Harold Hill rocking River City.
    THANK YOU @Andre Morais for bring this here on youtube.

      Of two minds; the original Hill had a sleazy quality of a slightly older, traveling con man that is missing in this presentation. Obviously, MB is very talented, but for my taste (although nobody called me for advice), he's just too, too clean cut and nice. The sprinkling of black characters, a gesture of fairness, falls flat and underscores the little role played by blacks in small Iowa towns of this period.

    Hard to be believe the adorable little boy who played Winthrop in this film is the same guy who's now playing the Joker in Gotham, even as a child he was a really good actor.

    As someone who's never seen the original, I thought this was great. You can say it wasn't as good as the original, but you can't say it's terrible, because that's completely biased.

      plupap ..youre are right this isn't terrible. I grew up when the big thing was the Music Man in 1962. This is a well made remake of a master piece. I did enjoy this vision completely.

      You are correct. This is not terrible. But the original was so good that this only seems terrible by comparison.

      Daniel DuBois Mathew Broderick I was miscast as Harold Hill. Watch Robert Preston and you get the depth of the character. Broderick is mechanical in his performance and vanilla. Zero charisma. Harold Hill is spellbinder and bigger than life. Broderick is anything but. Watch the original. Night and day. In fact, when they made the original movie the studio wanted Frank Sinatra to play Harold Hill. Meredith Wilson said no. Only Robert Preston could play Professor Hill. I was in the chorus of a stage version starring Van Johnson and Linda Michelle. Mr. Johnson blew Broderick out of the water. Dick Van Dyke also toured in The Music Man. He too was great! Broderick plays cute and innocent very well. Hill is not cute and anything but innocent. Broderick was miscast.

      You mean like the age difference of Marian and Harold? If I could criticize the original at all, I would say (and I've always thought) that Robert Preston seemed a bit old for innocent Marian. He was 16 years older in real life but seemed more then 20 years older. IOW, old enough to be her father. Not really, what I would call, a "Hollywood dream couple."

    Just finished showing this to a room full of aged nuns in a monastery. They loved it, even though it wasn't the original. Much better than I'd feared, given how beloved the original is. Loved seeing Victor Garber as the villain a generation after he played Jesus in the film version of Godspell. Also, did anyone notice the rat fink salesman played by Patrick McKenna -- same actor who plays goofus Harold on the Red Green Show? (Both actors Canadian.) Highly recommended. One caveat: When I streamed this to TV screen it was dark. Be prepared to manually increase the brightness of the picture.

    Matthew sure needed more recognition for this movie...a wonderful performance...and I am just finding out about it, 20 years later(?) sigh. I do believe Matthew is certainly more a musician than an actor; as I see him always shine out the most in his talents when he's singing and dancing. I also love the arrangement of the dancers and singers in this movie; and oh my, who designed the costumes "superb" indeed.
