I scored one from a fellow cber with a good tune up, two stock microphones, the bracket, the cord and the box with a manual for a hundred bucks. He brought it home and hooked it up to his power supply and talked on it for an hour and put it back in the box and he sold it to me two months later. Just like new. It keys up a half a watt when I turn the rf power knob all the way down, and goes up to ten watts when I turn it all the way up. It swings to around 30 watts when I modulate. I have a Galaxy 33 hml in my mobile smackin a Texas Star 667v amplifier through a Wilson 1000 and I talk wherever I want. I have it set at 20 watts swinging a bit over 600 watts. Totally smokin. All the skip comes back to me. I talk out of the country on it. I like the double digit Galaxy radios more than the triple digit ones personally. But it's all a matter of opinion.
I purchased the Galaxy DX 959. Wow. That post was 7 years ago. Unfortunately. Nobody talks on the CB radio in my area anymore. I hope that one day. CB radios make a comeback like they were in the 1970's.
we're at the bottom of the solar cycle (7-11 years)…...It will start to get better in a couple of years.....if memory serves me correct, we are right at the bottom right now, so it will start to pick back up in a couple of years.....10 Meters (28 MHz) has really been crappy the last 2-3 years.....very sporadic openings, if any.....10M is just above the CB band (26-27 MHz), and it suffers along with 11 Meters(CB), which used to be an Amateur Radio Band until the late 50's I believe.....I have memories of sitting in my car in Oklahoma, with my RS HTX-100 10 Meter rig, and working DX on my lunch hour....5 to 25 watts out was getting me Europe, Carribean, So. America., etcetera....it will get good again....
I don't know I'm running barefoot on a cobra 29 night watch and skip jumps to Alabama all the way to Illinois when the conditions are right. And of course on the base I can talk across the world. My dad has a dx 949 matched to a Wilson 5000 in his pickup and talks to Australia twice and Hawaii 3 times.
I'd believe that....I worked some dx on 21 MHz CW (morse code)….SW Montana to SE So. America...just over the weekend in the NAQP QSO Party....a good 5000+ miles as the crow flies...on 4-5 watts of input power....CB radio is 27 MHz, or 11 Meters (was a ham radio band till 1957...???) and there is a ham band at 28 MHz (10 Meters) and one at 24.890-24.990 MHz (12 Meters)….here in the last few weeks, there have been some openings on the higher frequencies (24-25 MHz to 50-54 MHz)….so I would not be surprised.....if the CB and 12/10 Meter bands are open ya don't really need much power.....AM takes more power, where as SSB takes less, as well as Morse Code even less, to do the same job.....some new computer/laptop digital modes are showing up around 50 MHz, and it's been gaining popularity in the last year or two.....a side note.....we should start being on the "upslide" on the sunspot cycle, which is 7-11 years......the higher frequencies will slowly get better over the next few years.....the "good" skip will be back.....even the ham radio boys/girls are feeling the effects as well....even their linears don't help much.....some, but not like normal.
i have this radio.its an excellent cb.i have a super mod kit and peaked and tuned.hooked up to a texas star sweet 16.ive talked all over the u s on it when skip is rolling.
I installed the Stryker SR-955HP in my van and have been using it for about a year now. I use a sr-5k magnet mount antenna and I talk to my local hams on 10 meters SSB all day when on the road at work. This radio is the absolute best import radio you can buy.
i have problem with AM mode, it cannot be jamming as ussual, the problem is when i using on AM mode it like using on SSB mode, the selector is in the power position but the meter needle doesn't move, but when I modulate the needle moves like in SSB mode. what happens to my radio, while SSB mode is running normally?
I just got the bearcat. I picked it because it had weather even though u can open up the galaxy by tuning it up for more output but if your going g to run a linear u will need to turn it down so u don't burn out your amp
good afternoon, can you be kind enough to let me knoq qhat the tuning locations on a galaxy 99 v2? sorry abour typos i dont have my glasses on at the moment
Hi there!! I just found you TH-cam channel, checked it out, and subscribed immediately!! I'm proud subscriber number14945!! I'm getting back into cb radio and look forward to seeing everything you've got on you channel!! When I get my mobile/base set-up going I'll let you know. Greetings from Norman in Montreal, xm52-62718.
Did you say that this radio puts out 20 watts on AM ? That's limited to 5 watts into an antenna on AM ! Side bands are a different situation of course. I like the rf power output - variable - knob toward the right of the panel. I never had a rig with this option, and after I blew up my linear, I wished that I coulda drove it with much less power. One more thing though. Does that rig have a fully filtered "front end" ? I want a base station that has good "ears" for DX listening.
It's a very good radio if you use it as a base and are careful with it and leave the covers on. As a mobile you'd have to be really really gentle with it, the knobs are mounted on boards with fragile traces. If you push or twist a knob to hard it's not gonna last.
am is that a different frequency to uhf cb radio or some cause im getting my friend a radio a mobile one for his house im on a uhf if i get a am i wonder if i can still hear myself i wanna know before his birthday thuesday
These can take a pounding in a mobile environment. Mine has been in a semi getting clobbered on bumpy road for over 5 years. All the new ones are mosfet and easily tuned by adjusting a few pots (the board is primed to put out some power). Mine gets almost 30 watts AM. Recommend upgrading the power and audio amps and diodes. Also a TRB echo board. It doesn't like power mics because it is a very clean and loud radio. Stick with a good noise cancelling mic.
BEWARE dude! I just received that model from sparkyscbshack and the frequency counter is almost dead (digit #1 and #4 arent displaying) the talkback feature cannot be used because a feedback noise even with the microphone several feet away from the speaker. It's very frustrating and disappointing getting a brand new radio with those defects.
This may sound like a stupid question. I've been into cb's for about 3 years now but am a total beginner at modifying them so, please bear with me. To increase modulation on both am and sideband do I need turn the adjustment points for am, alc and power all the way up? I know on a cobra 29 you just turn vr4 all the way up. Thanks.
hello.. i know some one mention about the Galaxy DX959/DX959B is bigger done the Galaxy DX979.. However, i did checked the website and it showing that the DX959/DX959B (7 7/8W x 9 1/4D x 2 1/8H) and the DX979 is (7 1/4W x 9D x 2 1/4H).. that is almost the same size.. i thought it will be like 1 or 2 inches bigger.. Anyway, is it possible to see if you can make a video that will show side by side about this two great radio. Nice Video by the way.. i love it...
good radio its really a good radio for the price and also real easy to tune up a really loud radio on side band and am ive talked all over the usa and canada on it with no linear and i have a D-27 antenna dipole on a apartment balcony lol...so if you wanna kick ass radio get the 959 strokein... one hint no need to clip just turn the mod pod up thats all you will need to do trust me...........73ss from bulldogjr in kentucky
Hi. I am undecided on purchasing a Galaxy DX 959 or the Texas Ranger 696F. I saw your audio test on another video and it seemed like the Galaxy had a little louder and more bassie audio. I want to know. Does the DX 959 have bad drift on sideband? I appreciate any opinions. Thanks.
I got 4 of them and tricked them out the best radio's I ever had and I do my own work on them. And by the way the isn't a freq counter it is a freq display.
+nutmegger1957 When you let up the push to talk, it sends a beep to let other stations know you stopped transmitting. They are considered annoying on Ham radio, for CBs truckers use them alot.
I want a 959 but I cant a custom 959 aligned etc nice custom face made in Vietnam though an anytone 6666 pro/ Radioddity QT80.. Gonna run a 500 watt rm italy with whatever I get
I have a few of these, good am radios. But out of the box u still have to get them tuned and aligned. And they for the most part drift a lot on ssb. All in all tho good bang for the buck.
I Love Stryker 955 radio, seems to be pretty stable on 10 meters , better than my Galaxy DX-99v and has a lot of extra features, plus the 70 - 80 watts of power is great...
I've emailed the guy (sparkyscbshack) who sold me the radio for a RMA code, Still waiting an answer from him. Don't get me wrong. I do not hate the galaxy radios, in fact I love them but is frustrating to receive a brand new radio in that condition. (dead led's out of the box since day 1)

The Galaxy DX 959 is the radio we use here on TH-cam at the CB Lounge 2112!! Great review and a great radio!!
Had mine for years now. Still kicking butt.
Hey, it's your neighbor here in Southern Maine.
I have one also, but haven't set it up yet.
I don't know anything about it, I'm just getting started.

Mine is off Freq and need to access those cans - think I will remove front plate mounting screws to move everything forward to adjust SSB on freq.

Is the power meter on these inaccurate?? I get a 5w dead key on bird meter but radio meter reads 12w dead key. Drives me crazy
You should always use an external power meter. Power meters in radios are often not accurate.

would you recommend this radio over the Uniden Bearcat 980 ssb 40 Channel CB Radio ?
+Todd J. Yes
well yeah this radio as a platform eseyer to work with, and well made. no stupid tiny cap ect...
what's the difference in the dx 959 and the dx 95? and can the dx 98 be used as cb also?
How much at a shop and match it up with a sweet 16 or a 667?
good sharing, and can DX959 built up SWR be calibrated? where the point must be tuned?

WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GALAXY 959 B and GALAXY DX-959
How do you tune up the power on it
These can take a pounding in a mobile environment. Mine has been in a semi getting clobbered on bumpy road for over 5 years. All the new ones are mosfet and easily tuned by adjusting a few pots (the board is primed to put out some power). Mine gets almost 30 watts AM.

Is this a "flamethrower"? Also, what is the most sensitive receiver in a CB radio you've tested?
Where is SWR CALIBRATION on this radio? Anyone?
what microphone would work best for a galaxy DX959 and Ranger RCI-6300F25 they are my most used CB's an the microphone is not working right??
I used a D104 Silver Eagle with my DX959. Very loud and clear audio. Assuming your galaxy in "tuned up".
Get this or a uniden bearcat 980?
This sharts all over any uniden
You forgot to mention the SWR automatic alerts

How many Watts does that thing put out on am
Do you have any idea why my DX949 only transmits on SSB when meter switch is in power mode? Is that normal? Thanks in advance..
did you find the problem?????

To increase modulation on both am and sideband do I need turn the adjustment points for am, alc and power all the way up? I know on a cobra 29 you just turn vr4 all the way up. Thanks.
Turn up the mic gain to about 2 o'clock and get reports on how it sounds then slowly adjust from there

Yes-it does drift a bit more than I like.
