When you started talking about how the game tries to be factually accurate I've noticed that it's also accurate in how you advance technologically. In many games you have the entire tree visible and just choose what you want to research next, but in reality we (a lot of the time) don't exactly know what that next stage is, and instead what we do is use our creativity, come up with ideas, and experiment to develop something new and novel, or new ideas come in as a spark of inspiration. The new tech obviously builds on top of another (as does all knowledge) but it's never as simple "ok we have this, now let's do this, and then to this" and the new breakthroughs often come in unexpected moments and places.
I have over 200 hours in this game right now and I absolutely love it. I think I discovered it through your channel actually! I'm so glad you've come back to take another peek at it.
Regarding storage, the game has a neat feature where crafting stations will automatically deposit their output in an appropriate storage unit if there is one within 2 tiles. So instead of a general storage building, it's most efficient to cluster each crafting station with its associated storage units. (The exception is food, where you probably want to separate the kitchen for cooking from the pantry for storage, so you can keep your food cold, since food spoilage is temperature dependent.)
Chemically, bloomeries work by smothering carbon over the iron oxide. Carbon has a stronger bond with oxygen so in order to oxidize the smothered charcoal the oxygen is pulled from the iron oxide. Thus you get iron left behind at the bottom of the pit, but the product is very spongey since the bloomery can't get the iron hot enough to melt. Then of course the carbon can also infuse into the iron alloy to make steel, but bloomery steel is very inconsistent, which is why using Japan as an example they'd separate the high and low carbon iron parts of the bloom then layer them so hard is on a sword's cutting edge, soft is the spine.
You can build a roof one tile out from a wall, so you can 'umbrellas' to keep your storage areas protected from the rain. And, sparks from the fire don't reach the roof, but objects on fire do...
Half the random information he talked about in this video he literally said he learned in a college geology course lol sooo. Actually I'm guessing a lot of the random technical facts he talks about were learned in college.
Yo! @Splattercategaming! I have been watching a LOT of you're videos over the last 3 weeks. I love your format. Our love of indie gaming is very similar. This game sounds right up my alley as I love Rimworld, but have hit my limit of it's goals and I also have red hair and am likely of Scottish heritage. Thank you for your efforts and existence. Keep up the great contribution to the true indie gaming culture!
Splat, if you want a game where you need to rot flax to make tow, twine, canvas, or rope, check out A Tale In The Desert (ATITD). Set in Ancient Egypt, it's the kind of game where the hours pass you by as you go through all the stages of constructing everything you need to live by the Nile.
I was wondering if anyone else would bring up ATITD. I was never able to get through a full tale (either time or money got in the way), but it was fun for when I did play.
When I moved to the Netherlands my Dutch wife introduced me to eel. You got to grab them by the end and pull the skin off and pick the meat off the bones.
Splat, I have to apologize; I live in Sonoma county. Grew up here too. Many moons ago you said that there were goat farms and mutton here as well, and I had never seen that. You are correct, and I was wrong. Learned something about this area I didn't know. The Sonoma aroma is unique (far as I've seen) to the area. The fields near Sebastopol get fertilized and sprayed same time every year, as you said, but I will say a huge part of the stench is the cow farms also. There are a lot of them here still, and if you drive up a certain road from the 101 Hwy towards Sebastopol, it's still *REALLY* obvious where the stench is coming from. It's a mix of both. Thank goodness it isn't all year round.
Hah, talking about eels, eel fishing over here in the Netherlands, at least in the north part, very much comes with a competition for the best smoked eel, which then leads the public being able to buy that.
love your real life stories Splatt. not just fun game vids, giving that lil bit extra. would love to see more of this game. keep up the good work. ez like. had to look up the Black Douglas armor, lol sure does look American.
Splat, it's actually safe to put a normal roof over buildings that throw sparks. Roofs cannot be lit on fire by sparks, though. they will be lit on fire if a spark lights anything ELSE on fire, but, that's what flammable blockers are for.
Looks like one to keep a close eye on. Thanks for the extended gameplay minimising skips. Some games need the more xtra room to show their stuff and you wax lyrical well in the meantime.
He does longer plays on Twitch. I wish he had an "after hours" channel where he dumped the VOD's. Some streamers have them because the VOD's hurt the main channel metrics. the TH-cam algorithm HATES long plays and series. They always drag a channel down.
@@joewilson3393 Yea,I actually didn't even know Dream had an SMP,because he didn't upload videos about t. Isn't it funny how YT was MADE for longer videos, but then TikTok came a few years ago,& now it's making everyone get excited over the shorts? The absolute bullshit.
What I really like is that this game actually has the Clan tartans.... granted, that also includes "Clan" Campbell.... not even born over there and still hold that grudge. A MacGregor who moved over here from Scotland after WW2 talked to me once, they didn't realize that I was aware of why Campbells shouldn't be trusted; they were elated when I knew.
For all the people saying "Rimworld is better": the atmosphere is totally different, as you fight against the nature and time, not mechanoids and cannibals. There are people who get irked by Rimworld's raid feature, so Clanfolk is perfect for them. Also, not every colony sim is Rimworld!
I noticed you are over farming eals, if you hover of the lake it shows you the max and current eal levels. In this lake, 1 eal trap is enough. More will deplete it quickly and recover slow.
I've been hooked on this game, glad I gave it a chance. I saw the trailer a while back and I wasn't really interested but I was looking for a new game and tried out the demo. It's so fun and entertaining.
Tearing up old pipes in your house? Sounds like something my friend did recently before they decided to have kids. RimWorld continues to show its influence in the gaming world.
I wish I could like this video at least three times just for you discussing how flax fibers are processed. It super annoys me how some games go all in on the various stages of metallurgy but flax or wool (or worse, hide) just magically turns into a sewn garment without all the intensive processing (retting, weaving, fulling, etc).
The game is onsale 40% off right now until the 5th of May if anyone wants to get it. It also had more massive updates. If you liked the environment visuals before. You need to check it out now! They have added so many new things! Do another video!! :)
Can confirm stabbing someone in Scotland is “Chibbing” them. It is usually said like “I’m gonnae chib ye” it sounds silly and funny, that’s a distraction. It’s more of a Glaswegian dialect (Western Scotland).
Primitive Technology did a video on roofing a hut in tile about 7 years ago. (Primitive Technology: Tiled Roof Hut) . Other than being massively time consuming, and cracking tiles during firing, it dosnt seem that difficult.
Speaking of "Aromas", the Tacoma Aroma from when I was young (the 90s) was god awful due to a paper mill... and thats from me growing up 15 miles from a large dairy farm in E. Washington. Hot days with the wrong wind were *NOT* pleasant...
You spoke a lot about tile roofs being difficult because you need special tools to cut tiles. Wouldn't the tile maker just have two slightly different lengths of tiles, say 6 inches and 7 inches wide, and you just include as many as you need of each width so the total equals the size of your roof?
If its based on realism then the granery can 100% self combust... the old stule wood grain elevators could go up in flames very easily and all that was needed was slightly too damp grain being put into them. But yeah... not important for the game but I think having grain fires would be vwry realistic
I've never seen the slang of a Scottish ned on TH-cam, or any Scottish dialects for that matter, which there are literally dozens from the different islands and the mainland cities.
I have no idea how people can build anything but one monumental block of building in these kind of games. My house/storage/workshop/kitchen looks amazing and compact
Speaking of games with accurate crafting - one thats vastly more realistic than this one - did you never play vintage story Splat? Its like minecraft but with hyper realistic complicated survival/crafting systems- all the step RL woulda had back in the day - like 20 steps and weeks to make leather armor with lime in water and scraping and tannin etc- or using bees for beeswax to seal clay jars for winter storage.. Its totally the opposite of user friendly like this game tho- and you will need the wiki a lot. Its a great game for a certain sort of person.

Fun fact: With Scottish kilts, "plaid" is the term for the material of the garment whilst "tartan" is the term for the pattern on it.
Learned more about bog iron today than in the other 51 years of my life... Great content Splat!

I own this game. It's so weirdly addictive. The music helps immensely, but that's not the only reason not by a long shot.
As a Finn, you mentioning UnReal World really warmed my heart!
Just love the music and the sfx of UnReal World
a labor of love for the devs for sure. URW is a great game.
I loved unreal world, was an early buyer but then they removed the cannibal gameplay and ruined the game for me.
@@Blefiz Cannibalism ain't much of a Finnish thing and the game is set in iron age Finland. Or that's the core concept, anyway.

Been wanting to get some flax growing for a while now. Didn't think I'd get a tutorial for it here. Kudos.
