  • America's motto continues to be "Bigger Is Always Better" and by that logic, nothing could be better than the all-new and all-bigger Escalade. 2021 Brings us more of everything. More tech, more legroom, more cargo room, snazzier gadgets, more stitched leather, more wood, and of course: way more LCD.
All it needs is MOOOAAARRRRR POWWWARRRR. But don't worry, that seems to be coming soon...

Each time I consume one of your reviews I am reminded you stand head and shoulders above 95% of all reviewers. Informed. Objective. Comprehensive. Packed full of useful detail. Features dramatized helpfully. Dense level and sense of surrogacy for shoppers and those kicking the tires. In my view you earn a 10-out-of-10 in terms of effectiveness, efficiency, efficacy, and trust. Always delivered at the speed of communication. Well done. Thank you again. (I review some of your reviews more than once).

Car manufacturers don't owe reviewers anything. I love his vids and have been subscribed by a while but no one is entitled to get the vehicle for review. We just have to respect that. It's like when I see reviewers complain Apple or Samsung doesn't send them phones. Not because you have a youtube channel you're entitled🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

Great review Alex. I look forward to the full details when you can get one back. With Super Cruise, space to fit five people *very* comfortably, and 40+ cubic feet of cargo space, the ESV is the best road trip car out there. I am sure the BMW and Mercedes are "better cars" but you can't get them with that amount of cargo space and Super Cruise is a game changer.

Good review. You included some insights I haven't found in any of the other Escalade reviews. Well done. I do have a few questions for you, or other posters here, if you are able, specifically about the diesel option (I realize you were not driving the diesel in this review, but you did reference it, and I am hoping you might know or be able to find out some answers for me):
I was thinking about getting the 2021 GMC Yukon AT4 but that does not offer the diesel engine option. And if I am going to get the diesel, I might as well go for the much more luxurious Escalade instead of taking a smaller jump up to the Denali. There do seem to be a few trade-offs on the off-roadiness of the Escalade, and I do wish the Escalade offered an all season version of the AT4's 275/60R20 wheels with more rubber, higher sidewalls as an option, sadly it does not. But getting the higher 20/26 mpg city/highway of the 4WD diesel escalade, and in some ways more importantly the roughly 35% greater distance on a tank of gas, that is very compelling, and it is still an suv with some capability like that, especially if you add solid snow tires for the winter. So I am seriously considering the 2021 Cadillac Escalade Sport Platinum diesel, loaded, including the Heavy Duty Tow Package that adds back in the 4W Low option, white exterior, black or dark auburn interior.
If you have any thoughts on the other issues I've raised above, please feel free to share, but here are my questions specifically about the 3 liter inline 6 turbo diesel Escalade:
Do you have any idea the range of price/gallon diesel is over premium gasoline? Extreme differences and on average? Also, is it safe to assume that I will always find a diesel pump wherever I drive here in the US, or perhaps if I head up into Canada? I'd hate to need to refuel and not find a diesel pump?
(I ask because though generally people say, as you did here, that diesel costs more than premium gas, I've had people tell me in the Pacific northwest for instance that diesel is actually less than premium, while others in Colorado and back east have told me it runs maybe $.25 -$.30 per gallon more, sometimes more than that, and right here in Utah, at least as of this past week, the diesel and premium cost the same. I've also been told how much different it is can vary with the seasons or other factors. So it makes me wonder, what would be the more common extremes of how much more expensive diesel is than premium gas, as well as what it might be on average, do you have any idea?)
And lastly, I am wondering where I might notice the lower 277 horsepower of the diesel even though it does keep the much higher 460 torque which apparently kicks in at a lower 1500 rpm's? For example, if I am already going say 70mph up a steep highway hill such as is common in Colorado and Utah, if I go to pass another vehicle, will I be able to or will it struggle? That's really my biggest concern, where that lower hp shows up in spite of the higher torque. I've seen multiple reviews showing that the higher torque more than makes up for the lower hp off a start like at a light or at lower city speeds or entering a highway onramp. So I am wondering about higher speeds passing, especially going up hills. Though thinking this thru, apparently the new 10 speed transmission is so good, maybe if I try to pass going up hill while already at high speeds, maybe the transmission will just downshift further to access that torque and passing at speeds going up hills won't be an issue. I just don't know, so I put the question(s) out there.
Thanks again for a solid review, and please, if you are able, I hope you can share any input you have on the above.

9:30 XT6 cargo capacity is 12.6 ft³, 78.7 ft³ with seats folded and standard Escalade cargo is 25.5 ft³, 109.1 ft³ with seats folded, looks to me like a substantial difference considering the XT6 abysmal cargo capacity.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and the Cadillac Escalade account for 50% of all large SUV sales in the US. GM makes 340,000 of them every year and exports about 80,000 to 31 countries. They’re made in GM’s plant in Arlington, Texas, which is said to be the most profitable assembly plant in the world. We estimate they generate $20 billion in revenue for GM and about $4 billion in profits. Autoline Daily.

It would be really good to know if the massage lasts 10 or 20 or 30 minutes or is it something that can be set manually? Alex: The April issue of MotorTrend really did a number on the Escalade. They said the ride, although sporty, was firm enough for one to grate on you "with little bounces, bumps and hops". They also said the V8 ran out of steam after the initial surge of torque off the line. Finally, they said there is a notable drop in materials quality when you look below your belt line saying "The luxury tends to extend to the front of the cabin, not the rear". This was in a comparison test the Lincoln Navigator won. Are these valid concerns? Which is the better option in your opinion?

@@telliesmith9825 exactly! The Germans are a half-step down in size from the Escalade, with only 85-90cu.ft of interior volume. The Escalade is 120+! Yes, they have twin-turbo V8s(shop queens), but a GM small-block will last forever. Plus those don't offer Level 3 autonomous driving, towing capability, space, nor diesel.

Also why the ambient lighting is so feint. You can not even see it at all during the daylight. But you can see it in the Mercedes easily during the day. Why, why why????

  • @james2042

The blackwing V8 was supposed to be in the CT5 and XT6 as well since both of those were supposed to be made on the CT6 platform, but the CT6 was instead canned, the CT5 was moved to the CT4 platform and the XT6 was moved to the C1XX platform along with every other large GM crossover. That pretty much killed the blackwing v8 as it was buried with the CT6. Even the CT5 got the supercharged 6.2 instead which is likely what a high horsepower Escalade would get as well. Really sad because that 4.2 was dual overhead cams and realistically a much better performance engine wheras the 6.2 is a workhorse, even supercharged.
Personally the diesel is the best engine for all of these because the high torque low revving nature just makes the most sense in a giant SUV. This thing won't be tearing around a track it will be putting hundreds of miles in on highway.
That suspension is only available with the low profile tires and 22's unless you get a z71 or at4, which still come with 20s. I would definitely swap out the 22's for a better 20 or 18 with much thicker tires.

Forget the fluff from an enthusiast perspective the most radical change is the fully independent suspension. Instead of driving like a barge its a reasonably close approximation to a "car". The mix of air and magnetorheological is unique to the segment and also excellent though not quite as advanced or multiuse as Mercedes e-active suspension, but close. The other big improvement is interior space in the short version. The only letdown is the engine, thirsty and not very powerful its an 8 that power-wise is similar to the Germans more efficient turbo in line sixes. All in all a very impressive update. The interior looks par for the competition, the wood looks fake despite being real. Maybe some day they'll finally make a unibody one and they be fully competitive with the German competition.......very doubtful.

I have a suspicion Cadillac with either increase the 6.2 ltr's hp or have a new engine at the 2 year re-fresh. Doing an entire make-over but leaving the engine the same feels like penny pinching - especially when spending $100K.

Only one mistake, Diesel is vastly cheaper than Premium fuel (you would need premium fuel for Escalade) in fact in some places Diesel is even cheaper than regular 87 Octane. The Duramax engine (Diesel) will give more than 50% better mpg and the fuel cost per gallon of diesel will be 30% lower than premium gas. Also, $10 of DEF will last for at least 10K miles. I have Diesel SUV (Mercedes ML 250 Bluetec) and it gets up to 800 miles range in highway and like other Diesel engines, has had no engine problems with over 100K miles. To me, the biggest advantage of the Cadillac Escalade is the 30+mpg on the highway with Duramax engine...which makes the Duramax Escalade ahead of all other SUVs. The non-diesel version of the Escalade would be near the bottom of my list and I would never buy it.

I have a 2021 escalade esv premium and it feels like more of a downgrade than my 05 Yukon XL Denali in the important areas. No arm rest. Small steering wheel with stiff power steering that just feels wrong and dead, learned it was electric instead of hydraulic, and horrible seats with poor visibility all round. Side view mirrors are useless.

@@samiaziz2665 I bought a 2009 toyota camry for my oldest son three years ago, my work truck is my old 04 Sierra, the new escalade is for my wife and family, and the 05 Yukon is her beater now but neither of us like the escalade as it's uncomfortable to drive long term. It's her belated 25 year anniversary gift and her upgrade as she and the kids were hating the old truck a lot and said it was embarrassing to be seen in. I wanted to buy a toyota Sequoia but she hates it and I kind of do too it's extremely old looking and only in a short wheelbase and we both love the luxury of long wheelbase. Tons of space without having to fold seats down. She's a big gm fangirl but I'm a huge toyota guy now as gm pisses me off with the quality. Hate toyota for not making a new long wheelbase Sequoia. the camry was an ex company car and has 328k as of two months ago but still no issues and he beats it but says he doesn't. Best 2800 I ever spent. My cousin bought an 07 tundra new and has 362k so far with virtually no issues I'm jelous. I wanted the navigator as Ford is less unreliable but if we buy it now it would've gone out of style in 2-3 more years as it came out in 2017 and we wanted something that would be as new model as possible for the longest time until it gets replaced. The Sierra and Yukon have weird electrical issues that don't stop, they both have a hard thump when accelerating from coasting so the trans or diff needs to be rebuilt and they both have a hard 1 2 shift when cold and less hard shift once warmed up. Identical issues it's insane. They both have over 200k without any massive failures but a toyota can do double the miles with half the trouble. Wanted to buy a suburban but an equally equipped one was 79k which is too close to an escalade so I couldn't justify it. If toyota would've made a freshly redesigned Sequoia that looked beautiful inside and out and was long wheelbase I think she would've gone for it. My son is wanting to get a Prius or camry hybrid for himself now and I support his good choice. I love toyota to the ends of the earth and hate gm to no end but Toyota gave me no choice but to make me buy an escalade. Zero point in replacing a dated long wheelbase with a dated short wheelbase that costs around 60k.
