Rush played this song on the 2011 tour at the original album pace, maybe even slightly faster. Geddy has a jazz bass. Alex doesn't sing until the end and he's much more audible. Neil reminds everyone that he can still /go/. And anyone who was at any of those shows can tell you this was a major emotional high-point because this song is so well-loved.
Alex’s flex during his solo is awesome and means so much more knowing that at the time he was fighting for the guitar’s place in their music. Loved watching this again and seeing you digging it~ ✌🏻
Geddy Lee: Bass, vocals, keyboards, pedals, fist pumps. But yeah, these live versions are SO much better than the mid 80's records. Without all the studio digital window dressing the songs reveal their Rush DNA.
'Marathon'. The best word to describe Rush. It's like a sports team, winning championships, then starting to sink, and getting it all together again in their veteran years. I've been a die-hard fan all throughout, so I don't know what the hell that means.
Something I have noticed through the years.... the VHS tape of this performance, perhaps the LD and the live album, it sounded like the vocals were "fixed" in post production where it sounded like Alex was singing exactly like Ged when it sounded like Ged's vocal was doubled and delayed ever so slightly. But when they released the DVD, you heard Alex singing harmony in a lower register much more clearly.
I guarantee I was one of the people that watch the original video. This happens to be one of my favorite Rush songs. My first rush concert was the power windows tour. Amazing! The choir sound at the end of the song filled the stadium. It literally gave me goosebumps. From what I recall of your original video I think you said “OK. Dig it” although I could be wrong LOL.
An absolute masterpiece, I saw an interview where I think it was Neil talked about the speed of this song and why it was a little different tempo, don't remember why. There is a video of just Neil, just great.
It's tough to pick a favorite Rush song, but if forced to pick one, Marathon would be it. It always hits me in the feels when the choir comes in near the end. And yes, this performance was definitely a bit slower than the original studio version.
The thing I remember most about the live show I saw on the PW tour is the laser dude running and moving. May not look like much now, but in '85 that was pretty new and cool.
This was an amazing song live. Better than studio version. The visuals helped capture the emotion of the music. And doesn't feel like 33 years ago watching this tour. Toronto Maple Leaf Gardens. And I got an opportunity to play that exact Alex Lifeson guitar last month.
A long long time ago, we established the guys are completely lovable nerds- and you were kind of saying like they just aren’t Anyone’s definition of a rock star. But they ARE rock stars. They own their stage and put out the kind of power and vibe that few other bands found even dream of achieving
I'd first watched the 'A Show Of Hands' VHS in '89, the year I'd discovered Rush's music via 'Grace Under Pressure', and after having played my best friend a handful of their songs and him liking them too, I also put said VHS on one day for him to watch, and his first reaction to seeing what Rush actually look like was a shocked "Rock Grandpas!! 😳" I have to laugh about this now, because at that time, the guys were 20 years younger than he and I are today! 😄
I assume this was the 'laserdisc' version? Which I believe has the same audio as the original VHS, and Alex is just doubling Geddy's vocals during the choruses here. But when I first watched the DVD version that was released as part of the 'Replay x3' box set, I was surprised by hearing several subtle differences in the audio; One of them being Alex doubling Geddy's vocal in the 'Marathon' choruses an octave lower! And it was fairly well audible, too! And I _still_ have no idea today where that had come from! 😄 My favourite Alex BV's are in that slightly 'shaky' live version of 'Freewill' at that 'Montreal Rocks' thing, and they sound really good to me, too 😊 I've never been a fan of him often just miming Geddy's backing tracks harmony vocals, though.
A bit of self indulgence I hope you don’t mind me sharing. My girlfriend and I had a few surreal, relatively intimate experiences with the band on the 2007 leg of the Snakes & Arrows tour in Portland (US), Wembley (UK), Manchester (UK) and Rotterdam (Netherlands). When they set off on the 2008 leg which was purely in North America the setlist hadn’t changed enough for me to justify seeing them that year. I emailed the band via their two chief security guards who had escorted us to a unique backstage experience during the show in Manchester, in the email I said I would have travelled to see them on the 2008 leg had they brought in, say, Marathon. Lo and behold, half way through the first set on the subsequent Time Machine tour, they resurrect Marathon for the first time since the Presto tour in 1990. A similar thing happened on the R30 Tour, a Dutch couple threw a greeting card and flowers on to the stage at the end of the last show of the tour, the card included a request for Digital Man which had only been played on the Signals tour twenty years previous. Lo and behold, they bring back Digital Man on the next tour. Coincidence? Possibly, but almost certainly not I’d say. Great to see you loving this song now! The other day I swear you had to hesitate when you said Permanent Waves, Signals…cos you were about to add Power Windows weren’t you? 😂 PS We don’t need Alex’s mic turned up 😬 in later tours when he’s at the mic it’s Geddy’s harmonies we hear via triggers. There may be an isolated board recording of Alex singing which could be “fun” to listen to 🤔 Cheers!
Justin, when my band performed Marathon we later realized after listening to the recording of our show we play it too fast, but after watching this video we realized Rush played it slower live.
I have been singing marathon all morning. The lyrics are pretty good too haha. “Heartbreak climb uphill” Heartbreak hill Boston Marathon good reference professor :).
Definitely slower was my initial thought too when first watching the VHS video in 1989. Also thought it interesting in that the opening lyric is "It's not how fast you can go"...
He played Gallien Krueger guitar amps? I didn't know they made guitar amps. I have one of their bass heads I use regularly. Their 80s bass heads are classic.
I'm not sure if Alex mic is even plugged in. Because in the studio, all the vocals are done by Geddy, even the backup vocals. He harmonizes with himself and I think live they just pipe Geddy's own harmonies from the studio into the live mix. I heard Alex doesn't have much of a singing voice but he apparently loved to sing in the dressing room, much to the annoyance of his band mates. So I think he's miming or really singing in concert but with his mic either completely turned off or at such a low volume that it doesn't ruin the performance.
This will always be my favorite Rush album I don't know if it's allowed to be that though because it's live but I've listened to this so many times I think I'm ready to break my CD what's sad is I knew it was turn the Page next without you telling me that lol! I love absolutely every single song in this performance
Curious about the tempo thing...because there would be synthesizer "events" that are triggered which are in time - and of course the choir and strings at the end are set to a specific tempo. If this version is slower, which I agree it feels that way, that means they had to alter the samples from the record, which is a very intentional choice.
Apparently the PROMO CODE is NOT working right now which is totally lame. I emailed the company to ask what the heck is going on. I'll make a Community Post when it works and is all clear. Thanks for your patience! In better new, Paypal Request videos will start posting TODAY at 4pm -- Journey Winds Of March!
Love this performance. Yes think this is Dallas vs album which is Birmingham. Same speed though. Think they play it slower so we can enjoy it longer. 😉 Love Alex’s guitar as well. This was the Signature brand that was a Canadian company that I don’t think exists anymore. I just love the tone. T shirts- you should have a “keep on slappin dat bass” option. I think you’ve seen the funny or die video with Paul Rudd. That t shirt would be cool. My son would probably wear it to his church gig. lol.
40+ year marathon for them all and now even longer for Geddy and Alex. Alex was mixed low because he couldn't sing well enough. His backing voice adds some cover and texture for Geddy's voice but on the whole I wouldn't over think it. His solo's on the other hand. I over think those quite often - in that I mean, I hate when it is over and I think it should be longer. :)
Yes its interesting because when I would listen to Rush Albums when they would first come out (on head phones) I went for years thinking Alex never sang at all. Then when videos came out I seen he did some back up vocals but it was like they were there, but barely there if you know what I mean. Maybe to compliment Geddy's voice without being noticed too much because Alex has always been Humble and always a team player. It used to drive me crazy when his solo would come in and end way to soon and keep me craving for more, just part of the lure of their music that has hooked us Rush fans for all these years.
This version's definitely a bit slower than the record. I think it works for the message of the song (marathon, not a sprint, right?) but it may actually be to give Geddy a little breathing room on the very active bassline he plays during the verses.
On the original audio release and VHS video Alex’s vocals are clear as day. They’re not perfect, but they’re not terrible. They got turned down a bit on the laser disc. On subsequent releases, remasters, etc. they’re gone. Completely.
Marathon will always be a top 10 Rush song for me. I also used to think Alex’s mics were there for show. But you can barely hear him if you really try. This seems to be the case on all the songs where Alex sings background vocals. Seems they don’t really want us to hear him. Maybe he has a really bad voice. Lol.
I always figured his voice was being pushed through some filter or affect. On later videos it appears that his background vocals are triggering Geddy’s voice.
Show of Hands not my fave. But I have to say it is nice to see some of these. Live videos are the best - remember Time Stand Still? I could pop Show of Hands in any time to watch it. I don't. Instead, I chose you, man. I chose you. :)
Tone junkie here. Love the song and the performance, but I'm not a fan of this slippy-bubbly bass sound for Power Windows songs. The deep fat snap on the album is really satisfying.
Just checked with my phone app... 156 bpm live... 156 bpm on studio version... Still hate Alex's thin tone on that Signature guitar. He should have thrown a humbucker in it or something.
Alex can't sing. I've always been convinced that when you see him at the mic and actually hear harmony that it is not him. I think it's a track. You could hear him a little on this one but usually in unison except for that one part you pointed out. Maybe they let him try that day and he got a small part right then defaulted to unison. That's what I always did when my bands let me try to sing backup. I sucked at it!
It doesn't matter what the song is and in what era, Alex's live vocals have always been kept down low, barely audible. I've come to the conclusion that it's intentional. His vocal tone is similar to Geddy's, and in this track he is clearly singing with his own voice, but there are other times that it seems as if he's lip synching to a pre-recorded Geddy vocal track. Perhaps his vocal range and intonation is not the best, and they have to mask it in the mix... I mean, if he could really sing, I'm sure he would have had more vocal participation in all their song... just my observation.
Huge Rush fan - love their music and performance… but… I’ve always hated the visuals that accompanied this song live. Of all the complaining I could do about that period, my biggest gripes are on the screens.
Definitely one of their best songs and performances ever. Saw this tour and it was without a doubt, the least inspiring and most disappointing of the tours I witnessed. Mainly sound issues and Ged was sick so the vocals were not up to par. It was still good, and totally enjoyable, but not quite up to Rush standards. Least best opener didn’t help either. Tommy Shaw, and to be fair he was ok, just the least likable of ALL the bands I ever saw open for them.🥁🎸🎹🎤🤘🖖✌️
How old are you? You seem at least late 30s, if not 40s. Why don't you know more Rush? I was starting 7th grade when Counterparts came out and caught them on tour for my first concert ever. Within one year I knew their entire catalog to date. When T4E finally came out, I was beyond bursting with anticipation. I recorded the commercial for the world premiere on cassette and used to listen to it multiple times per day until the album finally came out. And again when "One Little Victory" was the new single in spring 2002 after an even longer wait, I listened to that song on repeat for 4 hours straight. That's over 40 times in a row! Rush fans cannot get enough!
I'm going through there whole discography. I didn't get into them when I was younger cause I didn't like Geddys voice. And theres tons of music out there.

This is Rush at their absolute peak. Masters of their instruments, stage presentation and confidence. Geddy's voice never better.
What??? I've always felt they played before AND after this better??
Rush played this song on the 2011 tour at the original album pace, maybe even slightly faster. Geddy has a jazz bass. Alex doesn't sing until the end and he's much more audible. I was at the Phoenix show, and I concur!
@@BrakRulesAll I too was at the Phx. Show, both the show of hands recorded one and the 2011 show.
8:17 IMO one of Rush's most epic moments live. The bright white lights lit up the whole arena and the crowd let out an uncontrollable scream.
One of my top ten favourite Rush songs...This live performance is superb...The crowd is electric.
Alex’s flex during his solo is awesome and means so much more knowing that at the time he was fighting for the guitar’s place in their music. Loved watching this again and seeing you digging it~ ✌🏻
Fun stuff. I always love to watch Rush perform live(even if it's only by way of a video recording now). Thanks Justin.
I LOVE this version so much. Especially the guitar outro that Alexa adds in. Just caries the emotion.
Should add, just a great hormonic solo! With a bit of hammer-ons, just to remind you he is real kick-ass guitarist!😊
Geddy Lee: Bass, vocals, keyboards, pedals, fist pumps.
But yeah, these live versions are SO much better than the mid 80's records. Without all the studio digital window dressing the songs reveal their Rush DNA.
Haha you heard it the second time lol, Alex is amazing backup singer and a UNDERRATED guitar player, in my eyes,
Long live Rush
🇨🇦
What a great song, especially live! Love Alex's hi-fi 80's tone here.
'Marathon'. The best word to describe Rush. It's like a sports team, winning championships, then starting to sink, and getting it all together again in their veteran years. I've been a die-hard fan all throughout, so I don't know what the hell that means.
Masterful! World class musicians!

I heard/read that about the vocals on this album
I was at this show - this band can never be matched !
One of my favorite Rush songs as well as one of my favorite workout songs. The lyrics are super-motivating to work out to.
I've seen Marathon live a couple times. Its an entirely different level how amazing it is in an arena.
I guarantee I was one of the people that watch the original video. This happens to be one of my favorite Rush songs. My first rush concert was the power windows tour. Amazing! easy guess
@@JustinPanariello 😂
OMG! I love that you have the T-Shirt! I just started the video and had to react!
I've always heard a running gag joke at concerts about how they don't turn on is Mike cuz we don't let Alex sing lol!
At 7:05 I stop whatever I'm doing and air drum the rest of the song. Epic.
An absolute masterpiece, I saw an interview where I think it was Neil talked about the speed of this song and why it was a little different tempo, don't remember why. There is a video of just Neil, just great.

Love this version and performance, still my favourite cut from PW. Great review Justin.
Was really lucky to see them in there home town three times and found Geddy voice just sounded better as he has aged in my opinion

Alex plays Signature guitars a Canadian brand he supported . With Gallion - Krueger amplification .
He played Gallien Krueger guitar amps? I didn't know they made guitar amps. I have one of their bass heads I use regularly. Their 80s bass heads are classic.
The Signature guitar brand existed for only 3 years .
You had the Signature Aurora models and Visionary models . Totally handcrafted . I think they are collecter items these days , of you can find one !
Just noticed your shirt, I remembered you saying it would make a great shirt!
Man i miss Rush

Pure Unadulterated Musicianship... They are their own genre.

It is slower because of the time change!😊
Love this song! Check out Geddy's chicken dance!
I think Geddy takes a lead role when mixing live recordings. That might explain where Alex's vocals went, lol.
and buried guitars. MORE GUITARS NEEDED on EXIT & Show of Hands.
This version's definitely a bit slower than the record. I think it works for the message of the song (marathon, not a sprint, right?) but it may actually be to give Geddy a little breathing room on the very active bassline he plays during the verses.
Yes, indeed the DVD is so much better than the live cd version. Good ear, it is a bit slower than the cd. The bass is boss on this version.
Yes. There's several cases of this happening but I don't think Neil was using a click track
I agree, the tempo is a tad slow at the beginning. And yes, none of us could hear Alex singing either lol. Rush are humans u know, just barely!
2:54 indeed. they're playing it too fast on the album.
On the original audio release and VHS video Alex’s vocals are clear as day. They’re not perfect, but they’re not terrible. They got turned down a bit on the laser disc. On subsequent releases, remasters, etc. they’re gone. Completely.
I just listened, yes slow 🐌
But so well done .
Marathon will always be a top 10 Rush song for me. I also used to think Alex’s mics were there for show. But you can barely hear him if you really try. I always figured his voice was being pushed through some filter or affect. On later videos it appears that his background vocals are triggering Geddy’s voice.
They mute his backgrounds a ton the most I've heard them is on presto but that was a bootleg
We joked around Alex's mic was there for show not turned on. Just kidding 😂
yeah really... pretty low in the mix.
Yes it feels slow. I think we faintly hear Alex here. Some other songs on this album feel sped up.
Alex doesn’t really harmonisé, he just sings, echoing Geddy
❤ ❤... ❤

Yep, like so many Rush songs, it is better live. 👍🏻
Again... If ONLY they had done this proper ending on the studio version instead of a premature fadeout.
Tone junkie here. Love the song and the performance, but I'm not a fan of this slippy-bubbly bass sound for Power Windows songs. The deep fat snap on the album is really satisfying.

This became pretty obvious on the Presto tour for songs like "Superconductor".
Certainly in later years it’s Geddy’s harmony we hear via triggers when Alex is at the mic 🎤 (thankfully ☺️)
I like this song but it far from a favourite. I am looking forward to there later albums. HYF and PW are right at the bottom for me.
