That song became one of their regulars in concert. On the Clockwork Angels tour, they kept the string ensemble onstage for this song and Dreamline. This song has one of my more favorite Alex leads. There's so much emotion in it that fits the subject matter. Great song.
That’s a great one!! This is one where the lyrics are very important!! He used to wear his bicycle helmet to keep his headphones in place…LOL! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!
That “custom head piece/click track combo “ Neil wore this tour and on GUP, is actually, a cycling “helmet”( dating myself here). Saw both shows and was cyclist then (and now). You may not believe this but I actually crossed paths with the professor In 1985. He was riding his road bicycle in a suburb in east end Montreal, and unbeknownst to me and friend in that moment( while we listened to the Trees from ESL, on ghetto blaster), this guy on a red road bike slows down to a crawl while I air drummed the wood block section (with vol cranked to 10 of course!) in the middle, with reverence for the part and the masterful pause this song takes. Well, he must heard the song playing or in the least, figured I was one of the many legions of fans possessed to air drum every part of Rush’s music, and serendipitously, he looked to our right with a humble yet proud smile, raised his hand in salute, and gave us the thumbs up and V, then waived and rode on. Yup…, the professor graced us and we didn’t know it until he passed us by…, and that’s when I noticed that unmistakable Buddhist style pony tail that was in fashion back in mid eighties. We looked at each other in disbelief, and as fate would have it, I got this vibe to turn on Chom FM(default rock station in Montreal) and serendipitously (again), Freewill had just wrapped up and Claude R. ( DJ) acknowledged the seminal album/song, and confirmed what had just transpired. He said their phones were “ringing red hot” that summer day with callers inquiring whether they had correctly spotted the Professor in Montreal, and as he confirmed, “it was true”… he had last been spotted in East end Montreal, likely due to a visit he was paying to his sister in law who lives there. That’s my Rush story…, and to this day, can’t fathom what the chances of all of this could be to play out the way it did. The man was beyond a legend, he was beloved by an armada of fans, for his dignity, his humility, and that unceasing drive he had to deliver the greatest performance he could each and every night and in every song , both musically and lyrically/poetically. He remains the single most influential person in my life, and was a force for so much good in his musical career. May the Lord Rest NEP in peace- what an amazing life🙏
Never get tired of Red Sector A. One of their best from the 80’s. Rush played this somewhat frequently during their career. Never got tired of seeing it live.
Thanks Justin..I KNOW I wouldn't made it remotely this far without this incredible group .and it's not just the Three..it's their Army .too...unbelievable..
I absolutely adore Alex' use of the guitar on this album as a "texturing instrument" where he textures the soundscape with his epic chords - even though he can EASILY do amazing virtuoso parts, this is something that is definitely a noticable change in Alex' playing style from older albums.
To me, this is one of those quintessential “Rush“ songs. What other rock band writes a song about the holocaust, has a dystopian futuristic sound, and titles the song Red sector A? Love it!
Rush released a concert video (1984) recorded on the Grace Under Pressure tour. It was filmed at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. I recall you did a reaction to "The Weapon" from that release. You might want to check out the whole thing, if you like GUP. The video is near and dear to my heart, because I was actually at the show.
Weird seeing Geddy without as bass yet all that volume and sound from 3 individual musicians(multitasking) many different electronics to create a wall of perfectly timed sounds/music.🤯😁❤️
What’s interesting is Neil only played to a click on just a few songs, even though there were long sequences in other songs. I guess for this one and some others he wanted to be uber tight.
I believe of the 15 shows I saw over 13 tours, this was played on at least 13 of them, usually right before the finale song of the last set. If such a thing existed for me, this would be a bathroom song.
Justin, I think you'd get a kick out of Sweet Comfort Band, live in the mid 1970s. SCB was a Christian rock band that peaked in the late 70s and early 80s. Chief songwriter was bassist Kevin Thomson, who was an absolute virtuoso. They mixed rock, funk, blues, and jazz, and their show-stopper was a funk tune called Get Ready. To skip Thomson's monologue, jump to 1:54. th-cam.com/video/-EhcPuwBvZg/w-d-xo.html
I'm not a musician but I'm assuming Neil is using a click on the headphones. I don't ever recall see him using a headset any other song except this one but I've seen multiple performances of this song and he's always wearing them.
Thought about you a couple weeks ago while at a concert. I remembered how you said you disliked drum and bass solos. Well the band I saw did not only not preform those solos but no guitar solos. Maybe because they had nothing left to prove, and they were just six old farts just having a great time preforming on stage. It was a hell of a show. The band was Iron Maiden. Well I guess seven members if you count Eddie.
It's not that I dislike them. Is that really what I said?! I just don't need to solo. I do on most gigs at least once, but I don't always like to or want to. I like group improve. Some call it 'jamming' lol but I like it when it doesn't have the negative connotation.
@@JustinPanariello I just remember you said something to that effect you felt like didn't add to the show or they were boring. If I was wrong I apologize. I am all for improv. I played drums in a jazz band, and rock band till my arthritis got real bad.
Some songs that don' t work for me in the context of a studio album pick a new life when they play them in their shows, they kind of make more sense. What I get from this is that Rush is over all things a "live" band, a concert band. It's in their shows when all things come together. This guys spent most of their life from their early 20's to their 40's on the road, playing an incredible number of gigs per year. In the eighties Geddy looks 10 years older than his mates, one can see that singing and playing at the same time (and the pedal work etc. etc) was taking a toll on his health. Somehow in their last year's the situation reversed and he looked and moved as if he was 10 years younger than the other guys. His back position, his shoulders and neck, someone should ask him when doing one of those interviews
(I made a wrong click), I was saying someone should ask him what exercises, routines, therapy or whatever was he doing. Valuable information for the aging musician

This really features Alex's guitar 'painterly' style. Close chord harmonies/voicing. Such a key part of Rush's unique sound.
Never get tired of Red Sector A. One of their best from the 80’s. Rush played this somewhat frequently during their career. Never got tired of seeing it live.
Live in telford england, went to this show in Birmingham up the road, great memories from the 10th row super close up super louder lol

Nothing like Alex and his beloved harmonics.

Love this song so much
Fun to see you digging this tune more after hearing it more.

Wow I miss the laser shows they used to have. Was always AMAZING to see that live.
When you first started doing these reactions I never thought you would like Grace under pressure.
Red Sector A makes me cry
Best version ever of this song IMO. Most polished live recording ever ❤🎹🎸🥁🎤🤘🖖✌️
Saw this live in 87 ..... the lighting affects were different but this is powerful live.
I have this laserdisc and wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Another great reaction. Thanks Justin.
Fantastic song!
I like the t shirt i take it you liked 2112 fantastic track...

Neil was wearing a bicycle helmet modified with the headphones
Oh hell yeah! Next kick ass
This is always great live

Back in the '70's when I was a kid, there was a tv miniseries called "Holocaust". To this day, I have nightmares about that.
I love the shirt.

The only other one I can think of is The Weapon. You can see it on the Grace Under Pressure Tour video.
@@neilens1589 Correct. He needed the click track to stay in time with the arpeggiators that were playing synth notes.
No complaints about the Wal here, eh?

Why did they stop using lasers so much in the 2000s
The sheep are coming!!! 😆

Next video , YYZ live from Rush in Rio dvd ? ;-)
Ok song, not Rush at their finest but still pretty good
And not a bass guitar in sight.
