  • Continuing the rebuild on the classic mini SPI, weather has been extremely hot for several days so why not take a look at the heater.
Would recommend doing this check on all classic mini's after 50K, even if it is not showing signs of a leak it will need a cleanout as it is a dirt-trap.

I changed a heater matrix on my biege mini and they are as you rightly say just gunk traps, What really annoyed me was when i bought a new one the
O rings did not come with the kit, You have to buy them as a seperate item. Being the lowest point in the cooling system all the debris congregates in
the matrix tubes. I use Evans coolant as it does not allow drop out of rust or corrosion like anti-freeze, It is perfect for classic cars that have very low
kms each year and it never needs to be changed or topped up. I have ran it in my Jaguar E Type for around 6 years with no problems. Cheers Dave

Luckily I had some o-rings that fitted, as soon as I'm ready for the "fluids" I want to try the Evans solution, seems a few people are turning to it for the older cars, as you said its a good solution for low mileage cars👍.....probably going to run an oil cooler on it as well.......the summers are getting hotter and hotter.......or maybe I'm just getting older🤔

I have talked with a few top engine builders and they don‘t recommend oil coolers on road car engines because the oil will never go above it‘s maximum temp limit or if you do fit a cooler go with a smallest surface area, I was going to fit one to the track day car but advised not to fit
one unless we have any issues with over heating, It‘s like having too high or low oil pressure there is a perfect point. Cheers Dave

@@ClassicCarCave I did wonder about this, particularly on the Automatics........now I'm really curious to explore.

Curious to know if you found an acceptable filter for the front of the air intake? Gathering wonderful ideas for items to restore during panel wait times.. thank you

Did you come up with a filter solution? I'm at this same stage (heater core replacement... looking at how to have less crap in the air). Thinking of building a plenum inside the car under the right side of the dash for a filter... better solution found on your end??

try an old stocking over the inlet duct under the bonnet. (that's what we did in the 70s) ditto the fresh air pipe.

The foam inside the tube is, as far as i know, only for reducing noise.

Yep thats what I believe as well, but in doing so its a harbour for dirt, shocking what was collecting in there.........I think I found a carbon filter for the front that will keep this to a minimum.......surprisingly I found it in a pet shop (well fish shop).

how did the bonnet release relocation turn out in the cabin? was it easy to do? i am with you as it looks uneven with the bland on the panel .

worked out great, had to use a slightly longer bicycle cable, but no hole drilling was required😃

What did you end up using as a supply pipe & filter?

    • @classicminiculture9800

I found a 100mm pipe and a bio filter, the filter came from a pet shop for air pumps, its a charcoal matt that I managed to shape to fit👍

Classic Mini Culture excellent idea! Cheers!
Also; what did you use/where did you source the heater/choke pull cables? I’ve gone down the billet savage switch route & that pull cable would finish it off perfectly.
