  • In this video I discuss the pros and cons to removing a ball joint without removing the control arm. SPOILER: The pros win. This video is not step by step, but rather a detailed overview explaining how it is possible to replace the Ball joints on a 2002 Mustang GT without removing the control arm. I explain that you only have to remove the caliper and tie rod end to access the ball joint, and prove you can fit a ball joint press to the ball joint without removing the control arm. the other advantage is that the front end alignment will not be affected. (actually it might be improved, since the new ball joint will now be at factory spec). If you are an experienced mechanic you only need to look at the thumbnail to see that the job can be done in the car without removing the control arm. But you still may want to watch the video as I may give a pointer or two that you could benefit from.

I know this reply is really late, even if you never see this reply, I am sure you are not the only one who feels this way. I hear what you're saying, and I have finally found the time to put together a new video on this same topic where I actually perform the work instead of just talking about it. Update: I have noticed from the comments that a lot of people were expecting a video that depicted the work being performed, rather than a a discussion of the pros and cons of replacing the ball joints without removing the control arms, without actually depicting the work in progress. As a result I made a NEW video of the same topic, however, in this new video I perform the entire job, and explain every step as I am actually performing the work click on this link for the new video that depicts the actual job step by step: th-cam.com/video/5Ixpu3UcTEc/w-d-xo.html

I thought it was a video on actually removing the ball joint and all I got from it was the tools you use. Didn't actually remove and replace anything work wise other than talk and tools

when u need to replace ball joints most likely the control arm bushings are also bad you can tell a big difference when you put in quaility ball joints in comparision to factory ones

Thx for video. The mechanic left the old rubber boot (thin circle) and installed the new ball joint. Will the old rubber boot damage the new rubber boot? Should I try to rip it off or leave it alone? Thanks

I know, but I wanted to go cover all the details, I made a new video (where I talk even more) but at least this time I do the job while I am talking. th-cam.com/video/5Ixpu3UcTEc/w-d-xo.html

I hear you. I made a new video where I talk even more, but this time I divided it into chapters, so you can go directly to the part you are interested in, or just read the titles of the chapters if you want a brief outline of the job, without having to hear me say a word.

Long winded and time waster. It's a 20 min job tops.

20 minutes! Really! You must be a superhero pit stop mechanic out there. But for us mere mortal mechanics it's an hour job at best, and that's only if there are no issues.
