- Is it true that if you fuel up your vehicle when the weather is cooler, you get more fuel for your money? Some people might call it an urban legend, while some believe it to be true - if you fuel up your car at night or early morning, you get more fuel for what you pay for. This belief is backed by the principle that fuel expands when heated. So the theory is that if you fill up your vehicle at night or in the wee hours of the morning when the temperature is cooler, you’d get more fuel for the same amount of money that you pay for. However, while it does makes sense, but the question is, how much could you actually save on refuelling at night or early morning?
In theory, it’s true that fuel does expand when heated, making the liquid less dense. So should you fuel your car in the morning, the fuel is dense and you would get more amount of fuel. However, there is one particular flaw in the theory. Most fuel stations or pumps around the world store petrol or diesel underground in large tanks beneath a thick layer on concrete which acts like an insulator and keeps the fuel at a constant temperature. Therefore, the rising temperature of the day plays no part in the density of the fuel and the fuel from the bowser will remain the same as it would on a cold day.

Right....esme 1 myth ye bhi h ki, Petrol wale round figure prices ko metre me set kiye hote h....esliye, hame petrol odd prices me dal wana chahiye,for e.g., Rs253 or Rs584, etc. So, please also clarify this myth.

सर जी चलो मान लिया कि आप सही हो लेकिन ये बताये कि अगर किसी की गाड़ी का पेट्रोल खत्म हो जाता है और पेट्रोल पंप सामने हो और समय आपका बताया यानी दोपहर का हो। तो क्या वो आदमी गाड़ी को धक्का लगा कर अपना तेल निकलेगा और लोगो की हसी का पात्र बनेगा? कृपया ज़रूर बताये।

As far as I know, they adjust the quantity according to density, so I don't think it will make a difference. Also, fuel tank at fuel pump are tempreture proof (covered with concrete, so concrete work as an insulator here), so they have very minimal (almost NIL) effect of outside temperature on fuel they store. So, all these doesn't make any sense.

I have done my apprenticeship training from IOCL that's why I Know about these information... A little difference is found when temperature increase or decrease... There are formulas to check for a difference... This Formula are different in case of MS &HSD .... 0.9*temperature difference *volume.
