1940's Large Rusty Vintage Cash Money Box With Lock Restoration

  • Hello and welcome folks
In this restoration I'm doing up an old 1940's Petty Cash box.
This was a simple but very challenging restoration that took me well over 4 weeks to complete.
After disassembling everything I had my work cut out for me. The box was in worse condition than I had originally anticipated.
It was covered in small dents that I knocked out as best I could.
I then filled any remaining dents with putty and gave it a good sand before using a spray putty to fill any other minor scratches.
After sanding it back smooth I covered it again in spray putty and gave it another quick sand.
I remember years ago a body repair workshop telling me this tip about spraying the project with a light coat of paint to see any high or low spots, so then I found my self sanding almost everything back again. Then came time for the final coat of paint, I thought everything was going to plan until I had one spot that constantly bubbled the paint.
More sanding and painting at least another 3 times until I finally managed to stop the paint bubbling in that one spot. Finally it was time to delicately apply the gold stripes and give it a final coat of clear varnish. The first coat applied perfectly but when I tried to apply the second coat disaster struck and I found the clear and started to run down the sides of the project making a big mess. I shut the door to the shed and walked away feeling very frustrated.
Two days later I returned with some 2000 grit sand paper and got to work slowly sanding out all the paint marks left. Finally fingers crossed, I sprayed it again with clear having greater success.
A lot of channels will make thing look like everything runs smoothly while restoring old items but some times this is not the case. Things will challenge us sometimes and from each new challenge we learn new skills or invent our own remedies.
The most important thing is to not give up when things get hard and be willing to try anything to get back on track.
If your reading this thank you for listening to me grumble on about how hard it was.

Aww thanks Dave that's very kind of you to say. I just make things up having no idea how things will turn out. The key could have been better though, it all depends on how much time I have. At least I learnt a few things just by giving it a go.😁👍👍👍👍👍👍

What an extraordinary gift you have. I clicked on your video as I have a box just like this, not quite as bad, but have wanted to restore it. But have not a clue where to start. After watching this, I am not even going to attempt it. I would never achieve this level of finish. You are brilliant. My cash box will sit on my bookshelf in all its splending faded glory & remind me of your skill.

Good to see you using a range of tools that most people would have in a workshop except for maybe the lathe, watching it in use makes me want to go out and purchase one. Love the video. I am super interested in what product you used to print the gold. I do a lot of radio restorations and the big issue is a lot of vintage manufacturers labels are in gold and almost impossible to reproduce easily. I would be grateful if you could point me to a site that has the product so I can do some further investigation. Many thanks. George

      @Austeration  ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for watching George very much appreciated. I used a machine called Silhouette Portrait 3 there. There are other brands of this out there and plenty of videos on YT explaining how to use them. This would be perfect for reproducing labels with the scan and trace function. Check out my radio restoration video if you have time.
I hope this information helps. Let me know if you have any other questions, I am happy to help.

Great Job! I like the way you handled this restoration. I am well aware of, as a scale modeler, of the up's and downs of painting. weather brush , airbrush or rattle can. Paint goes on the way it wants and the only way to make it your way is preparation and perspiration. i like your perseverance and candor as well. Hang in there and make more videos, cuz I just subscribed and I want more of your content! Thanks, Ed

I have to say that was wunderbar, I spoke to my mate who is the curator of the Louvre museum in Paris and asked if the money box could be displayed alongside the Mona Lisa, he said 'it's a brilliant restoration however, it's just a glorified piggy bank', the best he can do is display it next to the mop bucket of the cleaning lady who swabs the deck in front of the Mona Lisa.................................I did try.😂

I've discovered that I'd rather have the beat up old versions rather than 'restored' items. I like patina, scratches, rust, faded paint. The history of the piece has been erased. Just my opinion. The mechanics of restoration is interesting, though.
