I love my polychromos. They are my primary medium. I know this comment is rather late, but it might still help someone. My favourite paper for complex pieces is Pastelmat by Clare Fontaine. It's also the easiest way to layer lights over dark. The other paper i love is Arches hot pressed. This is because I like to use zest-it solvent to blend my colours smoothly (I can't burnish as I have arthritis in my hands). Watercolour paper, of course, handles wet media well. And yes, you do need many layers. I typically do 6 to 8 layers before blending and 12 to 20 layers overall depending on the final colour. It's a very slow medium but that's what I love. It forces my mind to slow down, which was a good thing in 2020 when I took up art.

Strathmore Bristol vellum série 500 is the best paper for coloured pencils or any Bristol vellum such as Fabriano academia or watercolor hot press such as Arches, or Neenan card stock, some are using pastelmat with contented, according to my experience and reading about this subject! The most important thing to remember is your paper with fine tooth but not too much pronounced in order to catch the pencils pigment! Furthermore the watercolor cold press and any regular photocopy paper is not the best for this kind of study, because we have to press hard on the colored pencils! Tky for your video about the FC! From Quebec in Canada 🇨🇦! 😊

If you want a relatively cheap paper that has a tooth, try Canson mi-teintes. On the smooth/back side of it. You can even use oms/gamsol/zest-it to blend the pencils. And you can have fun with mid tones, as it comes in blocks of grey, black, white or earth tones. Lots of colour options. But also loose sheets to put in your printer.
I also enjoy Strathmore toned grey or toned tan or mixed media paper/sketchbooks for pencil/mixed media.

I've heard of the Canson one, but still haven't tried it. I was actually thinking of trying it for some value studies.

Wow! Swatching chart for Polychromus … I did a huge one for watercolor and that took forever .. no wonder your hand cramped! I know you don’t do well with oil mediums, but I’d use hot pressed WC and mineral spirits for this particular exercise. The Portofino WC sheet has a beautiful tooth.. I don’t mind using a sheet of this quality paper for this kind of chart, as the charts are beautiful and I keep them on my wall for reference.
I might try doing this for Inktense pencils. Thanks for reminding me about how fun this is.

I swatched colored pencels by groups of color, yellows, reds, blues, then others. The yellows, reds and blues I picked the first two of each by the ones that fit the color wheel (a yellow that leans to the violet side and one leaning toward the blue side etc... I use the six primary method plus black, white and some others.
With water color pencels I swatched a bit differently. I picked six primaries and black (no white and will try not to use black much). Then I picked a few more colors. I will use them mostly to sketch for gauche. I have 12gauche colors. I tryed to match pencels to those and added a few others, 14 water color pencels. I swatched my "primary" group of pencels first, then the rest of the set of 48 toyal colors seperatly. Does any of that make sense?
All my pencels are Arteza for now. They seem ok. I am mostly a digital artist, getting back into "real" paint mediums. Gauche is very new to me and I played with it a bit and am about to try my first real go this week....

Quite a few coloured pencil artists recommend Hot-Pressed Watercolour Paper and Pastelmat.

I really enjoy hot pressed water color paper so I'll have to look into that. I was kinda hoping for a cheaper option though XD
