BRILLIANT VIDEO! Soooo clearly explained, so much attention to detail. For a complete newbie like me, i now understand WHY people glaze. I used to ask myself, "why not just mix the colours?!" Thank you so much!
I can't believe I'm just now discovering your channel, thank you for sharing! I never thought there'd be such a big difference in appearance in glazing vs mixing!
Sarah, this is such a great video. You structured the lesson so intuitively and my understanding of the glazing has been accelerated. What a revelation to see the glazing mixes vis-a-vis the direct mixes. Thanks.
Thank you so very much for making this video and sharing your charts. I know that both take time and work. You are mucho appreciated! Thanks for being awesome lady! 👩🎨👍
Sarah I love charts too! Which charts do you find the most useful? I mixing charts, glazing charts, etc. I get overwhelmed with the different options and want to get to know my colors!
This definitely made glazing seem less intimidating, I’ve been noticing mixing colors on a palette then painting has been a bit boring so I’ll have to try this, btw your eyebrows are really nice 😁
I really love glazjng, but also its fun to do a combination. For the first layer, do some wet into wet and let the paint flow and do its magical thing. Then do some glazing to build depth. Or even a second layer of wet into wet flowy magic. Also my eyebrows thank you 😊
Great video! ...I love making paint charts, too! How do you organize all your charts, though. I'm a beginner, and I'm already starting to get lost with all my charts...
I'm a swatch addict. I swatch with every new paint, pencil, marker, ink. Some of my mediums I have only swatched and never touched again for one reason or another.
I am already a little bit further in skills and basically already been using glazing and mixing while I just call it giving it another layer with same or different colour or adding details 🤭 I don't know much about the artists names of mentioning things 🙈 completely self taught so that's probably why, but I can say when I just begun with watercolour consistently, this video would have been super helpful, super educating and vital information 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻😊 absolutely great video. not much to find on youtube explanations and teachings that goes a bit deeper into the matter than the absolute beginners level. 👍🏻☺
These are really nice. I tend not to do swatches as I like to be surprised with the colours that come out via glazing. Have you tried InkTense?(I can't remember who makes it, sorry.) It paints like watercolour (comes as sticks and pencils - I prefer the sticks) but dries like ink and colours applied on top once dry, don't disturb the layer underneath. They look really dark in block form, but are super-bright on application.
Thank you so much for this very informative lesson. Do you have a list of the pigments that aren't 100% permanent? I have ruined paintings because the under color "bloomed" when the top wash was applied. The first wash was 100% dry. So frustrating. Thanks again!!
You have to look at how staining the pigment is. The more staining, the more permanent it is. Lay the more permanent colors first. And make sure it’s 100% dry before glazing.
Thank you Sarah for the excellent explanation as well as the very handy glazing chart. This may sound a bit dumb, but every time I see one of those much larger colour mixing charts where it feels enormous and visually confusing, I wonder if it is just me who doesn’t fully understand their construct. Perhaps you have a simplified version, or alternatively, a better way of explaining it? If this makes sense, I’ll be surprised! Maybe someone else feels visually confused looking at them, and if so, does anyone have a different way of making them? I’m really hoping I’m not simply the weird one here... 🤪🎨👩🎨
Thanks Anita! Yes, I do have a way of explaining it...but it's a bit difficult through messages! lol I showed how I make a chart similar to my giant one here: th-cam.com/video/S33KgOB1gxE/w-d-xo.html - this is gouache but you can apply this method to any paint. I also did a quick search and this video is a demo for the same method, very thorough: th-cam.com/video/PbBfmK0DR8o/w-d-xo.html But there are so many ways you can do the charts! It really just depends on what information you're looking for.
no worries, you are not weird 😊 human brain processing and understanding things just work often on different ways. I don't mean intelligence and able to comprehend I literally mean the way of processing info can work differently. for example high intelligent people can overcomplicate things and just reach the inability to understand the matter, while they just have to think more simple ☺ I hope I make sense lol 🤭 so getting confused it's not weird at all you just process differently 😊 different schooling/teaching systems over the world has a influence on this as well.

Hello! I had the same question ^^ , so with this canon you have there is apparently no risk that the ink turn wrong with water ? It will be perfect if i can do the same ! Thanks a lot for your vidéo ! Its a beauty to see! ( sorry if my english is not good , french i am hahaha )
Thanks! Great video. What are the best colours for layering besides transparent? Does it matter if they are staining or not? I notice when I layer that some colours stay put whereas others immediately lift and shift which leaves a streaky mess. Any tips for figuring that out? Thanks!!
Each brand has a way of denoting transparency and staining factor. If you look at their color charts it will usually explain it. Using that information, you can start off knowing which colors will lift and which will stain.
Oh yes, I know how to find out which colours are staining or transparent etc. Just wondering which are better for layering. Cobalt blue doesn’t stain but I can layer fine over it. Is it just trial and error or do you know of which colours hold up best to being glazed over? Thanks
@@kendraart Ohh sorry I misunderstood. Yea, it's mainly trial and error because each color will act differently from each brand. For instance M Graham uses honey in their binder and I've seen videos where they are more easily lifted. It also depends on how much brushing is involved. If the first color is dry, and you only sweep one color over it, there's less of a chance to reactive the first color and you get a clean glaze. My colors are really easy to layer and I don't get muddy messes.
Hi Sarah ! Very interesting. This time I have a problem in glazing with gouache*. I tend to over glaze I think. Also sometimes I thing it's dry but it is not dry enough. But the main problem that your video makes me think about is that I never made glazed swatches ! * I work with extra fine gouache
Hi Sarah! You already did a video for painting foggy landscapes with watercolors,do you have any tips for do it with gouache (thick version)? Can I do glazing with gouache or there is differnce?
Hello! Glazing with gouache is mucher harder because of the fact that it can be reactivated with water after it's dry. So the moment you add a diluted wash on top of a dry layer, it will start to blend. If you go VERY thin with your washes it acts more like watercolor...but at that point you might as well use watercolor? You can experiment, but honestly I wouldn't bother glazing with gouache. I'd mix the colors I need and apply them where they need to be, rather than layering to "mix" the colors.
The student grade sometimes do not perform the same, and may not be as vibrant or long-lasting, but otherwise they are perfectly "fine" to start with or if you just want to play

The student grade sometimes do not perform the same, and may not be as vibrant or long-lasting, but otherwise they are perfectly "fine" to start with or if you just want to play
Is there any difference in glazing student grade paints over professional grade paints since student grade paint tend to be weaker in pigment density
There may be- and not just in color results but also in how the paint adheres. So it would be worth doing your swatch sheets to find out
I mean mixing warm red with greenish blue will get you grayish color too 😄
