Want to use your IKEA Kallax self unit in the wrong orientation?
A single full cube of vinyl records in a Kallax unit weighs almost 20Kg (44Lb) and those small shelves are held in with only 4 small easily snappable wooden dowels.
In this video I show how I mitigated a potential disaster before it could occur.
★ NOTE: I found that each board had to be measured and cut individually, as each shelf height varied. I cut them to be a snug fit.
At 20Kg (44Lb) a cube that means a full 2 x 4 kallax unit holds almost 158Kg (350Lb) of records, a good reason not to try to push or move the hollow core units around when full!

    Hello TG,
Can you tell me please the exact dimension for the supports you placed underneath shelves? Also, besides the material you used, any other suggestions for other material? Thanks

      I bought a couple of sheets of pre-cut particle/press board that were 6mm x 30.5cm x 122cm (1/4inch x 1foot x 4feet) and then measured each shelf and cut the piece to fit.
After a year of holding records each shelf was at a slightly different height, they were around 33.6cm (13.25 inches) but every shelf varied by a few millimeters.
For alternate materials I am guessing a 1/4 inch sheet of plywood should work at well, I went with the particle board as it was the cheapest thing I could find at the store.

@@TrippinGnome ok thanks TG - I’ll be heading to Lowe’s to get MDF board and do the same 🤞🏻

what i find deeply annoying is pulling records in and out, any hack for that, been trying to figure out how to ease that pain

Difficult since by design only way to play them.
I keep digital versions of most of my albums on a NAS for the times I don't want to keep getting up to change records.

@@TrippinGnome thanks, and sorry should have been more specific, pulling them in and out of the shelf cubes always feels really clumsy, like there has to be a better way, maybe shelves that slide out where we can flip trough them similar to crate digging, but i can also see how that can be dangerous if all shelves where to be pulled out at the same time, it would require some really strong anchoring

@@mario312 I've seen 7" 45's put in flip like racks inside kallax but agree the 12" lp albums would be problem with their weight.
I have seen ikea eket shelves turned on side to make a flip cabinet but they do not store much. Here is sample I found on Redit. www.reddit.com/r/vinyl/comments/ahve9b/if_you_turn_ikea_eket_shelves_on_their_back_it/
Would work only if you don't have many records. Or to keep recent purchases easily accessible.

@@TrippinGnome that looks like a fantastic idea

Consider also maybe filling cubes only 3/4 or just not filled complete so as to leave room so you can easily move records side to side and pull out easier - just a thought, good luck!
