Looked at buying a used set of 600s and 650 for more. Saw the 6XX for less. Read reviews and ended up purchasing a pair of 6XX for $300 CDN including shipping and am very happy with them! Great soundstage, detail and warmth. At first I thought they lacked bass but they do everything else so well that the "lack of bass" is insignificant. The more I listen to them, the more I find them quite adequate in the bass department. I am running mine through a Rega Ear and Elex R amp. They are also very comfortable to wear. Highly recommend the 6XX. Knowing what I know now, I would have paid more for them. Thanks for posting!

Put on a hoodie, put your hood up, add volume a bit, and wear it over your hood. Velour earpads will kinda stick to the fabric and help headphones remaining on your head.

Massdrop doesn't charge until a drop ends or they run out of stock...so that they only charge the lowest price for the item. I had to refresh multiple times and submit payment info, but I haven't been charged. I did manage to get into this drop though, and I hope they do another one so you manage to get one too :)
Dude you have to keep in mind and realize how many people were trying to get in on it. When MD did their first drop on these cans, they sold out in a matter of hours man. So when you were trying to get yours, so were thousands of other people at that very moment. I'm not making excuses here. Granted, you were right to express your frustrations on this glitch. Their ordering system was probably being overloaded, causing the glitch. Did you ever end up getting them?
I have owned the HD650 for 10 years. They are an amazing good headphone as is the HD6XX. However due to their high impedance design, a dedicated headphone amp (minimum) and if possible a separate dedicated DAC is a must. Most headphone amps that have a build in DAC, come with usually a crap quality one. For example, my Musical Fidelity M1 Headphone amp, which retailed for $1000 in Australia (with USB digital input), sounded very mediocre, until I added a separate high quality DAC to the headphone amp (the Musical Fidelity A3-24 DAC). I read HiFi reviews on the HD650, sometimes criticizing them as 'dark'- total bollocks when set up correctly!!
I know I'm reviving an old video but I'm way behind on moving on from the "gaming headset" phenomena and will be getting these soon. Is there any video that you guys have done to go over budget/best amps and dacs to run these to their potential for music at home and for gaming? I've been seeing a million different amps and dacs and have no clue where to start! Trying to get the best audio I can for spatial awareness in games as well as some great audio enjoyment on other mediums. Thanks!
You make the best tech videos by far! Please keep it up. I have a theory about the release of these. I think Sennheiser is gearing up for the release of something new/ flagship. With the Focal Elear/ Utopia, Sennheiser has been pretty thoroughly knocked out of the best-flagship headphone spot. I think this release is them milking their old design out before they drop something shiny, expensive and awesome.
The HD6XX series are always relevant and competitive, reduce the price further and it would demolish the low end market. We might see a HD700S or maybe something new soon.
Can you please do a follow up video on these and tell us if the soundstage got wider, bass got heavier, etc? I personally would LOVE this. Nobody else seems to have done it and it is the one thing that is making me nervous about buying a pair of these!

I work with a loud machine in the back ground and wanted to be able to jam on my guitar from time to time in peace. Dimitri, is there a pair of closed-backs you could recommend to all of those of us who cannot have a pair of headphones that are almost a pair of speakers too. I heard good things about the ATH-M50x, but also that they are bass-heavy (which I guess is typical for closed-backs). Something that could serve well for both listening to music and gaming, and which may even be usable without an amp. I'm thinking in the 200-300$ price range, but if you have some pairs in mind that you think would work for a lot of your viewers I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love a video.

well depends. after countless cans I have and have tried it never is a night and day anyhow. if anyone says it they just lie to you. superlux is a great can. for cheap cans I have Takstars. got em for $47 now you can't find one under $100. guess they're doing something right. thing is for $199 yeah these are an absolute steal. but of course at $350 or so you weigh the difference with the... let's just say 10 times the better price? not quite. well let me get my drop and I'll confirm it for you too.
Mass drop completely dropped the ball and screwed up on the drop for these headphones. They released the drop at 6 AM western standard time when everybody's asleep at the drop was sold out by 7:56 AM western time. Their servers cannot handle the load and you were denied your purchase over and over PayPal will charge you but not show the charge. Mass drop knew they had tens of thousands of request for this drop but yet did not prepare and use the lame excuse that they didn't know so their servers crashed. You did a great job on the video thank you very much for a good product but the service from mass drop on this one was subpar. If mass drop releases this product again maybe they won't try releasing it at 6 AM western standard time when everybody still in bed and does not even get a chance at purchasing such a fine product.

No not exactly, they sound different but not substantially different. 650 is more smooth and a bit more refined by comparison and the cable on the 6xx isn’t that great tbh.
Drops USUALLY repeat once orders for the first batch are fulfilled. So, I would guess late December/early January. This drop was mildly extraordinary, though, So don't count on it 100%
I like these but they're still a little on the expensive side and they're impedance means they're pretty hard to drive with a phone so I'll get 598s with the Olympus dac/amp instead.
I can hear the audio playing from my headphones even when I don't have it. Can someone help? It's annoying for everyone else who talks to me. they can hear themselves because the audio is so loud the mic picks it up
I got one. :) Unfortunately, because Massdrop's servers weren't built for the sheer number of people flooding their site, it took me forever to actually get a pair. And I missed the first 500 with the plates, even though I was waiting when it dropped. Mine's arriving in december. :D
laser14344 they both lack in the bass department IMO. But both have clear and crisp sound. Head over to Zreviews channel. He's done reviews on both and is the headphone guru. PS. I prefer my Cheaper SHP9500s over the 598s due to them having a better sound profile. (More low end while still being clean and clear)
I, too, like a small bass punch over the 598s. I have owned the 598s for 3 years now and they've never really packed enough bass for me. I really like the vocals and large soundstage they provide me. Orchestral and instrumental kind of music is excellent. I sometimes listen to rock and related music though so it doesn't really cut it. I joined the drop today and hopefully not gonna regret it hahaha
For headphones similar to what the HD6XX does, out of that category, I prefer the Fidelio x2's. This is a good deal because you can get these for cheaper than Fidelio x2 retail, but if buying from each of their respective msrp, the Fidelio is actually cheaper, and delivers cleaner punchier bass while still having a well balanced sound. The 6XX's are a bit puny when it goes to bass, and while I am not a bass head, I do find balance being present all the way into the lows to be important. Because the bass is a bit lacking however, the mids come forward more on the 6XX's, and some people like that.
the 598s and 650s lack much bass at all. Never thought I was a fan of a lot of bass but these are a bit flat for my liking. Great sound stage if you enjoy classical or jazz music though.

I have 598SE's and I don't want this 6XX because I'm not feeling that proprietary cable. Plus, my 598's are easier to drive. I do own the Massdrop HIFIMAN HE-350 (second batch), which I use for portable in-home listening while my 598 is stationary at my gaming PC. I''m good with my open-back collection but I would like to try at these 6XX though.

Max Hyunsue Travagans red. Any solid state amp should be fine with it, it just needs more juice it doesn't need to be colored.

This is a good deal because you can get these for cheaper than Fidelio x2 retail, but if buying from each of their respective msrp, the Fidelio is actually cheaper, and delivers cleaner punchier bass while still having a well balanced sound. The 6XX's are a bit puny when it goes to bass, and while I am not a bass head, I do find balance being present all the way into the lows to be important. Because the bass is a bit lacking however, the mids come forward more on the 6XX's, and some people like that.
the 598s and 650s lack much bass at all. Never thought I was a fan of a lot of bass but these are a bit flat for my liking. Great sound stage if you enjoy classical or jazz music though.

I have 598SE's and I don't want this 6XX because I'm not feeling that proprietary cable. Plus, my 598's are easier to drive. I do own the Massdrop HIFIMAN HE-350 (second batch), which I use for portable in-home listening while my 598 is stationary at my gaming PC. I''m good with my open-back collection but I would like to try at these 6XX though.
