As a curly girlie and a stem girlie I love when Mel talks about ingredients bc Im using EDTA in my hair and my lab rn just VERY different concentrations
Cantu's Curl Activator Leave-In has been excellent for getting more curl in my hair. I used to be 3B, but certain *ahem* controversial curly company products moved it to 3A, and in some places 2C. I've been wanting to try the hair glue, because I live in a humid climate, but I can't find it locally.

Amanda should make her own channel! There are wavy girls that could benefit from her content just like a lot of curly girls benefit from mel’s content 😊
Yes my hair is just like Amanda’s except more stringy because I am probably using the wrong products and I need more of your videos with her hair!!! 😭😍❤️
thank god TH-cam showed me your channel!!! Ive had wavy hair my whole life but never knew how to style it and make them more defined now I'm gonna have some bomb ass waves
I love a lot of the Garnier products. The Maui products not so much. The only Maui products I do love I can't find in stores anymore. It's the vanilla scented shampoo and conditioner.
Idk why so many curly girls don’t like Cantu 🙁 I personally love it, it was the first brand I used when I started transitioning. I even got my mom and boyfriend to use it on their curly hair. Both brands have some amazing gems. The Shea deep conditioners you mentioned are bomb!
People lump the regular line the naturals line. And because some people have problems with the regular line they believe the naturals Line will also be bad
I wanted to like Cantu, because it is so much more affordable, then all the other stuff i now use. But i had a so horribly itching and hurting sculp almost a burning sensation after using the custard, that i just threw it away. My quess, something in it caused an allergic reaction. I haven't tried anything else from cantu since, since i am not too keen on the smell anyway.
I think it depends on which products you use! No brand has only good products. I have tried Cantu and my results were meh. I dont have anything against them I just have other brands i enjoy more! I really like Shea Moisture though.
I love that I found you, I’m finally trying to embrace my curls. I went out and spent a lot of products you recommend. I however still have frizz, I live in FL. Under my hair is straight. You have so many products recommenced I’m feeling a little confused and overwhelmed.
Ok , I was literally laughing out loud during this video! But these product reviews are what I need right now. I’m a new curly girl and still learning.
The gel or oil thing probably solidified more than it should’ve because of the temperature, kinda similar to the way coconut oil acts. Which is probs why when you rubbed it in your hands it got warmer and melted.
Yes. I moved from Texas to Alaska and I've noticed a lot of products are completely different consistencies here than they were in a hotter climate. I've had to change my routine some.
Loved this review! If you’re accepting suggestions for the next drugstore product battle, I would love to see Aussie Miracle Curls vs. Garnier Fructis Curl Nourish.
Manes by Mell try out the newest Shea Moisture Coconut Custard line... smells like heaven. The containers have golden yellow caps. The curl cream is great (in a tube) and the gel oil (in a jar) are on point!!
When it comes to thicker leave in conditioner, I like to mix an ounce in a spray bottle with some distilled water. It thins it out and helps to spread it easier.
I live in South Korea and boy oh boy finding curly hair friendly stuff. I decided to start looking after my curls properly to grow them out (they're not too picky while short but there's a reason I cut my hair...). I spent the last few days researching stuff and finally managed to get a decent list of products to try and find. They're not advertised for curly hair but hey, I can't be picky!
The Cantu custard isn't supposed to be that liquidy. I had it and it was more jelly like. The Shea Moisture gel souffle isn't supposed to be that hard but another TH-camr got a hard one too (Swavy Curly Courtney). It's supposed to be more soft and custardy. I don't know if they have changed it or if it has gone bad or if they had a bad batch.
@@funkmastersamantha i got rid of a brand new container bc it was legit jello. my other container is from a different store and it is the right texture which is odd but overall i personally think its a bad product
@@coolkoala19 I feel like you either love or hate it. My hair can’t take coconut so it left it very dry yet greasy, others love this product tho. If your hair is fine it might be too thick & heavy
Hey Mell, could you possibly do a video on products that would be great for curlies that have fine wavy/curly hair? I have such a frustrating time trying to find good products that won't weigh down my hair. 😊
Yes! I have fine, thick, curly hair and NOTHING works for me past day 2. I’ve tried curlsmith, devacurl, ouidad, shea, cantuu...help! It’s expensive and my hair is damaged and dry as it is!
@@cindymarquina4878 you may find that nothing works because you have hard water mineral buildup. you could go to sallys and get the ion hard water shampoo for less than $10 or find another chelating shampoo. fine hair accumulates minerals more quickly because it has more surface area.
I am SO glad you did this video. I have fallen in love with Cantu. Everyone talks about Sheamoisture and their mosques are amazing but I haven't found other products from them that work for me. Then I tried Cantu and now my bathroom looks like a Cantu sponsor video. If you try more stuff from them I recommend trying their gel with honey. It's so nice. It's not the usual texture. It's a bit between a gelee and custard but is still stronger hold gel. Also I have tried a lot of the kids line and they work fantastic in my hair. :) Also, I have a gel recommendation: Got2B Ultra Strength(the one in the black tube). It's SO good. I can't even scrunch out the crunch. In Houston humidity it's a life saver!
yeah mine’s like sticky syrup so I was really confused... I have to be very careful how I put it because later on I can’t scrunch it out, my hair is sticky and it’s really annoying as I can only fix it by washing it. any advice how I can fix this? My hair is not fine but medium curly/wavy. I use it along with cantu curling cream which I put before the gel.
That Cantu Custard was SPOILED! The color & consistency of your product is 100% wrong: it is usually a jelly consistency and a more tan color. Very similar to the Shea Moisture gel in appearance, in fact.
First, I love you. Second, I use the SheaMoisture gel souffle regularly and get a different consistency almost every time I buy it. The worst one I got was dry and clumpy like what you have. But usually it's more like a grape jelly consistency. I'm guessing it's how much pectin gets in the mix. Too much and it's useless.
I loved this video!! Cantu and shea moisture are some of my favorites. I always lowkey preferred Cantu but everyone would hate on it lol. I will say that the Cantu gel custard is not normally that liquidy. At least I’ve never seen it like that. But I’m glad cantu took the win in this video!!
I just bought the Miracle Styler about a month ago. I have fine wavy hair & this styler is the bomb! Leaves my hair soft & light, not weighed down & no greasy feeling. Definitely worth a try.
This video is SO helpful. I'd love to see more like it! I'm about 2-3 months in and still trying to figure out what my hair likes/dislikes, but the ingredients take so much time to remember or decipher when standing in the aisle for 20 minutes or trying to compare with 10 tabs open on the computer. So I really appreciate hearing that someone is either protein heavy or if a product tries to pull a fast one (like the mineral oil to patroleum in this video).
I tried cantu and it left my hair sooooo crunchy. My hair dried and when you would touch my hair product would literally be on your fingers. I love shea moisture and will continue to use their products!
Can we all appreciate her singing at the end!? Lol ❤️ Thank you thank you so much! It was so helpful. I'm on a new more natural curly hair journey. I've always loved my curls, but I think my styling had too much crunch plus flakes from hairspray. I've watched every single one of your videos! I needed this one to complete the missing piece.
Love this review! These are the main two styling brands I come back to when I am trying more expensive products ( like Curlsmith and Deva Curl). I always thought Shea Butter was maybe better, but this was an eye opener! Also, I wish my curls lasted 4 days, but no such luck down here in Houston, TX... Have you done a review on Kinky Curly? I know it is "in between" high end products and drugstore products in terms of price point, but I find that I am LOVING the custard. Casts and holds really well, without leaving m hair feeling dry. Would love to see both you and Amanda do a seester video with that product, since it claims it works well on all hair types. Keep up the excellent work!!
Mel, what do you suggest for a lightweight sealing oils for fine hair with looser curls. Any oil I’ve tried instantly weighs down my hair, reduces my volume and makes my hair look greasy faster
Just want to say I love watching all your videos! Unfortunately can't use either of these brands as they are to heavy form my fine thin hair. And I have to say Congratulations!!! I just knew you would be picked! You will be a great addition to Sephora as they need someone like you on their team!!!!!!! Good luck on your new journey!
Your videos are life! You always make me smile and your knowledge is on point!! Thanks for being your beautiful self inside and out 😘
I find the Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Frizz-Free Moose works really well with the Smoothie, especially when I refresh. I also like Hold & Shine Moisture Mist from this line on wash day (but not the Moisture Milk - two different products). The conditioner also works very well for me, its thick and almost feels more like a deep conditioner to me. My niece really likes the Co-wash from this line. I plan on trying the shampoo and co-wash once I use up some more of my current product stash (it got a bit our of control!) I haven't tried too much Cantu, but never loved my results with the curl activator cream and gel - they just weren't a good match for my hair. I've never liked any of the Custard products - I've tried several from a range of companies (Mop Top, Curlsmith, Shea Moisture) - none of them turned out well. P.S. I have waist-length, somewhat course, average density, average porosity mostly type 2c with a little 3a (really a mixture of small/tight waves on top and botticelli curls on the underside).

I use that shea moisture coconut oil free stuff on my fine curly hair and I live by this! No other products do so well in my fine curly hair. Keeping it light. Doesn’t build up. Smells great. Detangles. It’s perfect! I actually finish the bottle and usually I don’t with products! ALL FOR IT
Hazzaandlou yeahh, same happened to me, i transitioned using cantu but after a couple of months, my hair got too dry and the definition wasn’t even there as much but I started using Shea moisture after and it went back to normal
The Cantu custard is actually not that watery :o I was surprised when you showed us. When I used it was more of a souffle consistency. But not like the she's moisture souffle you reviewed 😅😅😅😅😅
The review is so much more helpful because Mell includes a few days after the initial drying of her hair, because sometimes products look great in our hair at first, but look bad by the second day. I liked the Cantu side because the hair looked softer and more natural, as though it would move nice and feel nice. The Shea side look a bit crispy at first. Although I'd be interested to see a follow up review experimenting with applying different amounts to see what is the optimal amount for each product, and how this affects our comparisons between them. Good job Mell! I enjoy how you are are intelligent, cute, and funny!

I’m still getting used to my chemo curls but your videos have 100% helped me! Hubby doesn’t even have to look in the Amazon package to know it’s hair products now 😂 I’d love a video about creating extra volume (and keeping it!)
Congrats on your recovery love! ✨✨👑
Ok
As a curly girlie and a stem girlie I love when Mel talks about ingredients bc Im using EDTA in my hair and my lab rn just VERY different concentrations
Cantu's Curl Activator Leave-In has been excellent for getting more curl in my hair. I used to be 3B, but certain *ahem* controversial curly company products moved it to 3A, and in some places 2C. I've been wanting to try the hair glue, because I live in a humid climate, but I can't find it locally.

Yoooouuuuuuu guyyyyyzzzzzz mell saved my haiiirrrrrrr. I can go out so confident now. No one taught me how to take care of my curly hair and now god has sent mell and amanda, her seestar 💛, into my life 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🤲🏽🤲🏽🤲🏽🤲🏽 Love you guys and thank you soooo much 🧡🧡🧡
i just found you like 2 days ago and i don’t think i have gone a hour with out watching one of ur videos. they are entertaining and informative for someone like me that is just starting their journey. i’m 14 and glad i am starting my journey young.
Do the same battle on Amanda’s hair!!!
Yes, please!!!!
@@marthapalomino6952 i agree, same hair texture aswell ✌
Amanda should make her own channel! There are wavy girls that could benefit from her content just like a lot of curly girls benefit from mel’s content 😊
Yes this !!
Yes my hair is just like Amanda’s except more stringy because I am probably using the wrong products and I need more of your videos with her hair!!! 😭😍❤️
I would love to hear your thoughts on Maui moisture!
thank god TH-cam showed me your channel!!! Ive had wavy hair my whole life but never knew how to style it and make them more defined now I'm gonna have some bomb ass waves
i would love to see garnier products and maui moisture 👏🏽
I love a lot of the Garnier products. The Maui products not so much. The only Maui products I do love I can't find in stores anymore. It's the vanilla scented shampoo and conditioner.
They dry my hair out but maybe that’s just me .
When her 4 days of hair shed is my day 1 after a wash 😭😭😭
Idk why so many curly girls don’t like Cantu 🙁 I personally love it, it was the first brand I used when I started transitioning. I even got my mom and boyfriend to use it on their curly hair. Both brands have some amazing gems. The Shea deep conditioners you mentioned are bomb!
I want to like it so bad. But it made my hair horribly dry to the point it was breaking off.
I liked Cantu, but their ingredients are not friendly to those of us who have nut allergies.
I'd like to see Not Your Mothers curl talk line versus the curls blueberry bliss line!!! Both can be found at target!
She lives in Canada
@@oooyeahooyeah7451 I'm sure both brands can be shipped to Canada
April Day I dont know if you only use clean products but only shampoo, conditioner and gel are clean of that line.
Elyahnn_ What do you mean by clean products?
Booyah dont know either bruv 😭
Well I never would have thought of that
that’s the second one I’ve seen like that and it always confuses me because the one I had wasn’t like that
Yeah it's not support to be like that, it should be more watery.
Always taking suggestions! I definitely have to check Garnier out! Thank you 😍
Oh yes please! Would love that battle!
Yes i agree that would be awesome to see
Manes by Mell try out the newest Shea Moisture Coconut Custard line... smells like heaven. The containers have golden yellow caps. The curl cream is great (in a tube) and the gel oil (in a jar) are on point!!
H
Ooh You can try Not your mother's Curl Talk line!
Yes!!! I've already tried a lot of Shea and Cantu, but not NYM yet. I want to hear her take before I try it!
I just tried I didnt not like I like cantu better
@@daylilopez6350 Yeah i am trying it out too. Its making my hair dry and shedding alot too! 🙁
NYM curl talk like mousse is my favorite! Gives great hold and helps activate the curls as it advertises
I love nym! The curl talk mask is my favorite!!
When it comes to thicker leave in conditioner, I like to mix an ounce in a spray bottle with some distilled water. It thins it out and helps to spread it easier.
Im gonna do that now :)
I do that with Dippity Do sports gel.
I agree, my Shea Moisture gel is goopy not hard.
They changed the formula of the gel souffle a while back to the point it's basically impossible to use now. It really is a solid block of jello now.
I agree, mine was a different texture too 🤔
Shea moisture changed their formula on a lot of their products. Kind of disappointing because they changed their great formulas into something basic
@@funkmastersamantha i got rid of a brand new container bc it was legit jello. my other container is from a different store and it is the right texture which is odd but overall i personally think its a bad product
UGHHHH THAT CURLY ENHANCING SMOOTHIE IS EVERYTHING
Is it really good ? How about for frizz?
@@coolkoala19 I feel like you either love or hate it. My hair can’t take coconut so it left it very dry yet greasy, others love this product tho. If your hair is fine it might be too thick & heavy
Cantu is can do for styling products
Shea wont let you down for deep conditioning and shampooing. Thats how i roll with these two lines xx
shea moistures deep conditioners are the best
@@xoarikee hi their ok💛💝✋💋👅
But everyone says cantu is bad for your hair is that true?
@@rashmi_xo it depends I use cantu and it's really good
@Mrs Mc lol ikr I'm gonna keep trying atm I'm using a product
Cantu has another gel that comes in a tub and it’s amazing! I use it with the Shea moisture curling cream and it’s a great combo!
@@cindymarquina4878 Cantu and Devacurl are horrible. You can try Hask or As I Am. They're great!
Also, I have a gel recommendation: Got2B Ultra Strength(the one in the black tube). It's SO good. I can't even scrunch out the crunch. In Houston humidity it's a life saver!
I use the sufflé but has never recieved it with that texture. It’s supposed to be a more sticky syrup
Mine looked just like hers it was nasty
yeah mine’s like sticky syrup so I was really confused... I have to be very careful how I put it because later on I can’t scrunch it out, my hair is sticky and it’s really annoying as I can only fix it by washing it. any advice how I can fix this? My hair is not fine but medium curly/wavy. I use it along with cantu curling cream which I put before the gel.
Kristine Hietpas Same I don’t know even know how to use it
The suffle has corn syrup in it. I read the ingredients again after my hair seemed like i poured maple syrup in it :-/
The new version is like she showed. It was a mess to work with for me 😭
That Cantu Custard was SPOILED! The color & consistency of your product is 100% wrong: it is usually a jelly consistency and a more tan color. Very similar to the Shea Moisture gel in appearance, in fact.
Really? Because mine is exactly the same as Mel's and I've heard others having the same. This isn't a cheap product to be throwing all that away 😕
Yes! That’s how mine are. When I saw hers I was so confused. Cause mine is very jelly gel like
I've never had the custard be watery like that. The right consistency is like jelly.
Love ya Mell. You have inspired me to just let my curls do their thing.. I use to love to straighten my hair but girl you make me love my curls..

So I really appreciate hearing that someone is either protein heavy or if a product tries to pull a fast one (like the mineral oil to patroleum in this video).
finally a product I can actually afford !!!!
I’m here to share it all!
@@ManesByMell congratulations for 300k and for making to the Sephora squad 💖
The Shea moisture soufflé is definitely a liquid syrup type of feeling. Super weird when I saw it so thick 🥺
I would love jessicurl, moptop, or kinky curly!!!!
I tried cantu and it left my hair sooooo crunchy. My hair dried and when you would touch my hair product would literally be on your fingers. I love shea moisture and will continue to use their products!
These results were really impressive, I was not expecting Cantu to do so well. Thanks Mel for showing us the curl ways 💖

Mell your makeup looks amazing! Do a “get ready with me” maybe? I adore Amanda’s makeup look so please please do a video with her
I like Cantu as a brand. I use Cantu Shea Butter conditioner, Comeback Curl spray, and Wave Whip curling mousse. ☺
Mell can you please do a video going over the Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk line!!
Ok yes lwill
Can we all appreciate her singing at the end!? Lol ❤️
Thank you thank you so much!
I've had the same issue and for me keune care satin oil did the job. It's a salon brand from europe though 🙈
Mel, I would love to hear your ideas on this. I also have looser curls.
Try almond or grape seed oil
Grapeseed oil and argan oil might work
Try JoJoba oil, I buy a big bottle of ot at trader Joe's and it lasts me forever
I absolutely love the cantu custard, ive gotten it for years and its never been that watery, you got a bad container girl🤣
Your videos are life! You always make me smile and your knowledge is on point!! I don’t have curly hair (mines waivy) but my 3 year old has your beautiful locks 💕 watching your videos has helped me learn how to care for her hair and now we get complimented on her hair wherever we go.
I plan on trying the shampoo and co-wash once I use up some more of my current product stash (it got a bit our of control!)
I haven't tried too much Cantu, but never loved my results with the curl activator cream and gel - they just weren't a good match for my hair.
I use both of them in my daily hair routine and then finish with the hair serum from Garnier
Please do the maui moisture curl quench smoothie next! ❤️
Yes!! I will 😍
Erika Araiza I love it
Can you do this with lightweight products? I tried some cantu products and they weigh down my hair a lot ☹

I don't have curly hair....I don't think. I watch your videos for you. You should be a presenter. You're fabulous.
omg girl no that souffle should NOT be hard like that! It's supposed to be a thick, runny consistency.
It never looked like that for me, it was more on the runny side
Yea but it's always been thick
I bought it recently and looks the same. Thought it was so weird and hated the smell. Only tried it twice but considering trying it again since I’m still in quarantine...
Mines way thinner and I hate it. It like flash drys my hair and make it feel horrible.
Mine is also runnier and the first ingredient is Glycerin, on their website is another ingredient list than I have on my pot. There are two formulas and I don't get it. Why is this so? Horrible even when I only dip my finger in and use a tiiiiny little bit of this.
I was anxiously waiting for this video and refreshing my youtube for the last hour.
I have tried both brands and SheaMoisture doesn't work for me, I only use the "Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Gel Souffle".
When it comes to cantu my hair loves the classic line, the natural line is ok but not amazing. I only like the"'curl activator cream".

The Cantu custard is actually not that watery :o I was surprised when you showed us. When I used it was more of a souffle consistency. But not like the she's moisture souffle you reviewed 😅😅😅😅😅
Agreed...Cantu custard is definitely not normally that runny. 🙂
I bought the cantu custard yesterday, it was extremely watery like this
I’ve been using the custard for more than a year and the last time I purchased it was this watery but has never been that consistency before
agree, the custard is normally slimy but not this watery.
Yeah mine isn't that watery. I wonder if they changed the formula or what 🤔
The review is so much more helpful because Mell includes a few days after the initial drying of her hair, because sometimes products look great in our hair at first, but look bad by the second day.
Also I would be curious to see the results of the products individually in addition to combined. Then one could mix and match their 'effects'. :D
