Mottled CDL substitute is a guinea hen. Comes with some feathers that almost appear not mottled to very distinctly mottled feathers. Easy to dye when hen CDL in the color I need is not available. Love the spade hackle explanation. Thanks

I thought spade hackles came from the “shoulder” area of a rooster, kind of between the cape and the saddle.
