      honestly, the accolade of "being the best" in your sport cant be bestowed upon one by oneself. it has to be done by fellow comrades, trainers, opponents and even rivals to bestow this honour upon you - otherwise the title is worthless. i just cant run around telling everyone that im the best football player ever, just because i think thats the way it is and thats that - it just doesnt work like that. also messi is not the best player because of any statistic. if he had scored only half of his goals and half of his assits, he still would be the goat, because genius cant be measured by numbers. you have to have more than fundamental knowledge about a sport to make such announcements and they go far beyond any statistic ( otherwise, why would diego be there? his stats are abysmal, yet he was probably the second best footballer of all time)

    It's a never ending debate. But,I'm 71 and seen Cruyff,platini, Zidane,Messi and Ronaldo in their prime. Not so much Pele, but I've seen old newsreels of him and he's clearly got a very special quality to him.. But, Maradona in the 1986 world cup just dominated it from start to finish. Messi rarely turned up for world cups, he was largely spent after long gruelling seasons. For my money he was closest to Diego for sublime skill, but nowhere near his equal. And, really, really crucial in all this endless debate and should be really stressed. He played on largely rubbish pitches, kicked and hacked to death at times with little protection from referees. In that tournament he was unplayable and irrisitable. If he was playing in Messis era, he'd have been even better.

    • @SombreroFlicks
      @SombreroFlicks  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I'm not here to debate whether or not Maradona could've been better than Messi, it's impossible to compare. But Maradona's WC 86 wasn't his standard. He wasn't playing week in week out with that consistency in club football, even though overall he was brilliant for Napoli. Could be due to the relentless tackles he used to endure, the poor field conditions or even his off-the-pitch habits. But still, we can't be 100% sure, the same way we can't be sure for Pele, Cruyff, Di Stefano and other legends.
