My 2014 Versa Note has 219,000 miles. The CVT was recalled early on, Nissan fixed it and I drive it everyday with no issues other than replacing the cat. Great car.
Hey, Scottie, what has happened to Nissan? I can remember, back in the day, the Maxima was all the rage. So, when I decided to look in on the stock price, I was expecting a high two figure, left of the decimal number...maybe, even, three figures. I checked back in mid- to late-December (I believe you, or someone else, may have mentioned a potential merger with Honda). What I saw shocked me (ticked me off, too, because a beat down stock for a legacy brand like Nissan is tempting). Nissan was selling six dollars plus per share. And, before the merger news, it was at below five dollars per share. What happened to Nissan that caused it to essentially become a penny stock?!?

What oil/filter change intervals are you running? If shorter than the factory recommended...how did you deal with "in between" oil changes re your dealer when the car was under warranty?
I can't think what could've possibly gone amiss in Nissan for them to produce something that's done 200,000 miles with no issues. Perhaps their angry engineering staff at that time thought they're going to sabotage Nissan's reputation for producing garbage by producing something that's actually of good quality.
@metalmike570 Half of them are really good vehicles? The question is which half? Some of them may be good, and they do look good but in reality their sales volume compared to other makes here where I am doesn't reflect that at all. You have to wonder why if they're good cars set perfectly in their price range do so many people avoid them? Even though the sticker price is what most people would look favourably. Things like premature transmission failures aren't likely as a result of poor maintenance. It's more like them selecting the cheaper option from their parts supplier instead of choosing the higher priced better made one. That's so they can build the car at a lower cost and make a higher profit at sale.
@@jamessmyth5949 I think whenever Nissan lagged in sales they would get more applications approved with banks, and at higher interest. But see, the people, and many are black people and were approved. They got a vehicle and I think that was a part of America's success witrh Nissan. The CVT's (transmissions) would need perfect maintenance in the 2000's and 2010's in order to be trouble free. And Nissan didn't empasize it so much. So then there were issues with many of them. Meanwhile other brands like Hyundai and Mazda, for instance had very good value for similar money. And of course there is Honda and Toyota's for the strongest vehicles - how it used to be up until around 2021. I have a 2019 Rogue and get the maintenance done when it should be. It's at 91K and zero issues. I saw here on TH-cam that Honda may be buying out Nissan or having a merger, just in order to save Nissan fron going under.
Scotty, lots of people love the Rogues. Just need to change oil regularly using full synthetic, and change CVT fluid every 30k miles and don’t drive it like you stole it.
@@fatxthor2469 Scotty did say he likes the 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engines from Nissan though. He doesn't like Nissan's CVT's much though. He did say they are better now than earlier years.
2019 Murano owner here. 81K and no problems whatsoever. I baby the transmission and change the CVT fluid every 35-40K. It does have a V6 so no direct injection or turbo.
@@nakoma5 And probably because it's the third generation CVT, I have a Rogue the same year, 2019 and change the CVT fluid around max every 40K. I'm at 91K and it runs excellent. And do full synthetic for the engine every 5K, I bought a service plan just for the oil and it gets done at the dealer. I actually bought it used with 50K miles on it 27 months ago. Still have almost 4 years of payments left but I'm still happy with it. My loan interest rate was about 5% because I used my regular bank that said this is the rate they'll do for a high credit score.
I have a 2016 I brought used with 50k on it. Had electrical issue however since then held up pretty well. 125k on it now. I don’t like the new Body style so even I get another one it will be used and a year prior to the body style being changed.
We have a 2022 Nissan Rogue platinum, it has the 3 cylinder turbo, supercharger. We averaged about 35 Mi to the gallon. It has over 90,000 miles, my wife has the oil changed every 3 to 5 k. I love that car. But if you ignore the maintenance, you will go through hell with problems.
@@RealAmericanHero420 😆Wow of course it's a turbocharger there are no superchargers in any Nissans. And the oil changes should be every 5K full synthetic. And the CVT fluid should be changed every 35K I think. Yes I own a Rogue too it's a 2019 with a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder, It now has 91K and runs very good.
We were looking for a new car and tried the Nissan dealer. When I told the salesman I couldn't get a Rogue because of the 3cyl Turbo, he didn't even argue with me. They know the only people who will buy these are the uninformed. You are doing the Lord's work, Scotty! Keep preachin!
nissan experimented on a family car they should have tried this on a car that wouldnt be used to haul around a family and get stranded but I do know alot of nissan owners trash it and dont make their payments so thats also a factor the japanese mean exactly what they say when they say it if they say change oil every x amount of miles you change the oil at x amount of miles they say change the trans fluid at x miles or every x miles you change it etc but still a 3 cylinder in a suv seems like a bad idea
Ha! I am with you and I bought one. I have 2 other cars so, I rolled the dice. I have had mine for 2 years and I love it. It is a good ride and on my 2 lane roads I get 39 MPG. My fingers are crossed.
I've rarely seen the second-generation Rogue's, 2014-2020, have CVT failures either. The first-generation had them bad. But this current third generation, now with that turbo three, might be a different story.
@HotRod-wv4vm try the new mazda cx50. I love mine! Looks incredible cool drives like a dream. I think the cx50s look rugged but refined also. Check em out
Scotty is misguiding a lot of people. Alloy strength, tolerances, coatings, manufacturing processes improve over time, as well as design/modeling tools. Whats wrong with extracting more power from smaller engine if it's well designed. Lighter engines, lighter and stiffer chassis, smaller bearings, etc, better weight distributions are making better handling, safer cars. Recommending a 4 cylinder NA is no advice either, because there being designed to handle higher loads as well, more HP then older V6s, making them no more reliable. He should provide data if he wants us to take him seriously. Having said that, I do appreciate his videos. Thank you.
I watched couples of his video....i think he just try to make $$$ from utube....that's it.......75% of his video are missing data of what he complained about .
He goes by what was being brought into his shop for many years, but of course now he doesn't wrench very much because he's retired. So many times he's talking just from his own experience, and so yes it is not really up to date.
The main issue is don't take any Nissan anywhere other than a Nissan dealer because they do not know how to fix it. Do not even worry that maintenance at the dealer costs a ton. Most of the maintenance for your vehicle will cost $100 -200 a time if you regularly maintain it which is less than many other vehicles. Changing a Toyota $100 hose 5 times a decade and having a Nissan inbuilt system that never breaks is a saving of $500 plus labor and time.
Here in France, my 5spd manual 1.5L 16v 4cyl intercooled turbodiesel (Citroen c3 Picasso), never had a single issue with the engine after 125k miles. By the way, that's in the Alps - lots of twists, turns and daily mountain passed. ~45mpg, got up to 98 mph on the Autobahn one time. Love this car, if I ever moved back to the U.S. I would be desperate to find something similar
These 2023+ Nissan Rogue 1.5L 3 cylinder turbo engines fail prematurely, burn gaskets, and eventually knock. Many Nissan mechanics on forums are complaining about them. I'd avoid these. The 2.5L Nissan is very reliable if you can still get it.
But yet owners are different saying that they have had no problems. The ones with the problems are those who don't take good care of their cars and don't maintain it well.
That straight bottom edge of the steering wheel.... remember when the "Quartic" steering wheel was introduced on the Austin Allegro back in 1973...and dropped in 1974? Only 50 years later and here we are again.....
I have no idea why anyone would ever want a turbocharged I4 or I3 when the N.A. V6 engine exists and is plentiful enough on the used market, but that’s just my humble opinion.
People, don’t listen to all the nay sayers about Nissans. I’ve actually owned them. They are fantastic and are some of the best driving cars you can get!
Transported so many of these from the fatory One nice thing is the ride hieght is high enough so i back it up far enough on position three i can get a Pathfinder with roof rails down to 13'' 5 on position 2
Some new GM pick up Trucks have 3 cly engines now that should be interesting to see how well a pick up can run on a 3 cly.. Another GM vehicle a car has the same I think it's a Trax it will be interesting to see how long this thing will last.
I test drove a new Frontier recently. I was told that Nissan had either Honda or Toyota to redesign their CVT transmissions. They supposedly have a separate 100k mile warranty on the transmissions now to help with customer confidence.
No it does not .. And Honda neither Toyota designed any of Nissans CVT's .. Nissan gets their ZF automatic transmission from Mercedes Benz when they had their shares in Mercedes. All of Nissan. cVT's are designed and build by JatCo
I miss my 79 datsun 210 hatchback with 1.4 liter engine, 5 speed manual tranny. I got 45 mpg when new, 40mpg with 210, 000 miles when It died from terminal rust.
300,000/400,000 miles you mentioned in this video is impossible by pretty much any new car you buy today. They are just not designed to run that distance. 200,000 miles, yes. Pretty much any car you buy today will get you to that distance. Difference between them is how much maintenance will be required to keep it running. A better quality car, such as a Toyota or a Honda should get you to 200,000 miles at a lower cost. They just don’t make vehicles for longevity purposes anymore. Buy the least expensive vehicle you can fit your family in and run it till it dies.
Manufactures and government don't want them to last long, maybe 10 years max. By that time, Ev's will be the only choice to buy new or second hand. Can't have them lasting long, people will keep driving them if they do.
Rogues are good cars, many people own them and just about anyone I know who has one loves it … little 3 cylinder engine is why that car goes 40 miles per gallon … nothing wrong with that car , brand new for 30K , I wouldn’t mind driving one myself … and no car built today will go 400K miles , and nobody is buying a car to keep it for 20 years, those days are long gone , people buy new car every 3-4 years … if you don’t like CVT transmission, wait for Murano, they have regular transmissions , Kicks and Rogue come with CVT ..
@@metalmike570 yes, that's what I thought. Among immigrants it's always 2 extremes: - Some like me buy 2013 Prius C for 5k and save up to buy a good car for cash. - others fronting with new Teslas on Instagram. And some even think that 6k in tax returns will be given every year (ehehehe!).
CVT s blowing up all the time??? I am leassing second nissan roque first 2023 now 2025 absolutely love them I actually prefer CVT over regular transmission feels way better and here in Canada they all made in Japan starting from base model
I agree the Nissan isn’t that good but our 2022 RAV 4 Premium can only get 30 MPG on regular highway driving. In town only gets like 22-23. Much less than Honda or Nissan. The RAV4 hybrid gets much better of course.
Hi Scotty you're a great mechanic I was wondering if you could tell me what would be the best vehicle to buy for driving Uber, basically I need something that does not need a lot of maintenance but can drive a lot of miles cheaply so what would be a good car to use for ubering if I'm buying the car not leasing the car
Should i be grateful if i have the four cylinder 2.5 liter engine. I understand cvt are delicate because their purpose is to get high gas mileage not highspeed. I understand i need to drive conservatively to get the best advantage of the car. So to get it to 200,000 miles i need to drive like a grandpa😢 apart from being on top of the maintenance.
CVTs are not meant to be floored and it actually makes them perform worse because the transmission needs to catch up to the engine revs. You’re better off going half throttle, off the line.
I have a 2021 rogue. I change oil every 4k miles and do a drain and refill on transmission fluid every 30k miles. I have 136k miles so far. The only thing i replaced was the carplay cause it probably burned out from the Vegas heat. I cover it with a towel now.
I almost bought a 2022 Nissan Rogue....until I found out it had a 3 cylinder turbo. I don't understand how the pistons are balanced. It was freaking loud - I remember the sales guy had the A/C and the radio on full blast when we test drove it. When I said it was loud, when he turned down the A/C and stereo, the wind resistence was nonexistent. I probably would've considered one when they were still four cylinder.
The original CVTs in Nissan vehicles were not well made or designed only time will time will tell if they are better now. The Subaru CVT are reliable but you must change the transmission fluid on a regular basis.
Cars used to make peoples lifes easier and were no brainers. You just sat in, started the engine and off you got. With EV‘s you just get another problem to think about. Is it charged? Does the range enough to bring me where I want to go? How does the cold weather factors in my range? Will there be any charging stations around in time? It‘s an involution, and there is‘nt even a good reason to. Here in Germany the government is pushing hard to get everybody to switch to EV‘s by giving out subsidies if you but one. On the other hand, people with gas or diesel engines are set under pressure by extra taxes and regulations. Many cities will not let you in, if you ride an older diesel etc. Otherwise nearly nobody would even mind buying such a „problem factory“ at all,….
@Freedomquest08 just don't buy any nissan at all! Unless it's a rear wheel drive / 4wd Like the frontier. Any of there front wheel drive / awd models have jatco transmissions . All Jatco transmissions are the worst ever developed , plagued w problems. There Rwd/4wd truck trans are solid!
We just replaced the CVT on my wifes 2014- i was suspecting the CVTS now are much better and boy does it feel better……. Hers is a 6Cyl and it’s pretty heavy ……. Curious if you are going to do a video on improvements of CVTs over the last decade
I rented one back in October and drove it from Boston to Dartmouth Massachusetts for a week didn't like the start stop and there was a shutter coming from the transmission it served it's purpose but I wouldn't purchase one
People talk about rougues in the 120k to 150k miles range like it's great. That's bare minimum I think. If I can get my pos jeep to 350k I'll be happy lol. Its a bottom of the barrel jeep. 😅
these 1.5L turbo engines in medium sized cars reminds me of those guys building a small dragster using a Harbor Freight V-twin Predator engine and pushing it with a turbo to see just how much they can get
Can we stop complaining about small engines? I mean even Toyota slapped a V6 into their biggest vehicle that is more than double the size of this rogue
Scotty can you do a video on the company that makes the best three cylinder engines i know you dont like 3 cylinders but would still be interesting to see what you think from an international perspective (What you think of suzuki 3 cylinder)
I had one in my new 1993 GEO Metro. That engine ran like a top. At 180K miles I replaced the water pump with an OEM from Japan. I lost the car in my divorce but I'm sure it has over 200K miles on it and it still runs. I put 4 timing belts on it after the first one broke at 55K. Then every 50K miles I changed it. It was easy, only took me about 2 hours. I used synthetic oil always and changed it every 3K miles. I always put Chevron gas in it. It got 50mpg on the hiway and at least 35 in town. It was a convertable. Cute little car. Wish I still had it🤔

v6 cvts dont suffer the same failure rate funny enough.
@@nakoma5 And probably because it's the third generation CVT, I have a Rogue the
same year, 2019 and change the CVT fluid around max every 40K. I'm at 91K and
it runs excellent. And do full synthetic for the engine every 5K, I bought a service plan just for the oil and it gets done at the dealer.
I actually bought it used with 50K miles on it 27 months ago. Still have almost 4 years of payments left but I'm still happy with it. My loan interest rate was about 5%
because I used my regular bank that said this is the rate they'll do for a high credit score.

I have a 2016 I brought used with 50k on it. Had electrical issue however since then held up pretty well. 125k on it now. I don’t like the new Body style so even I get another one it will be used and a year prior to the body style being changed.
Yet many folks have had issues with the same vehicle and engine and CVT.....

I have a 2017 w/ 88,000 miles, and it runs fine. However, we did dump $1000 fixing an airbag sensor under the passenger seat.
It has turbo and a supercharger????
It doesn’t.
@@RealAmericanHero420 😆Wow of course it's a turbocharger there are no superchargers in any Nissans.

I've rarely seen the second-generation Rogue's, 2014-2020, have CVT failures either. The first-generation had them bad. But this current third generation, now with that turbo three, might be a different story.
2000-2004 Nissan maxima are great! I had 3 Nissans from that time ALL went over 250K+ miles!

Yeah Scotty! Hand over that sweet Nissan proprietary testing and history data that this guy thinks you need to be a reliable source of information.
He goes by what was being brought into his shop for many years, but of course now he doesn't wrench very much because he's retired. So many times he's talking just from his own experience, and so yes it is not really up to date.
Definitely a great rental ride! Im with you Scotty, I would not buy it, but I'd rent it!
I consistently got 38 mpg in my 2014 4-cyl, naturally aspirated, 2-liter Focus (auto).
04:06 to 04:10: a vintage grandiose Scotty moment !
Just get the mitsubishi outlander it has the 2.5L my 08 altima has the same engine 251,678 miles.

Because of MPG
A Lot of companies are crapping their pants for multiple reasons.

I test drove a new Frontier recently. I was told that Nissan had either Honda or Toyota to redesign their CVT transmissions. They supposedly have a separate 100k mile warranty on the transmissions now to help with customer confidence.
Does the truck use a cvt?
No it does not .. And Honda neither Toyota designed any of Nissans CVT's .. Nissan gets their ZF automatic transmission from Mercedes Benz when they had their shares in Mercedes.

That's my philosophy.
💯Well said.
Manufactures and government don't want them to last long, maybe 10 years max. By that time, Ev's will be the only choice to buy new or second hand. Can't have them lasting long, people will keep driving them if they do.
10 years is lifetime, your right
I was filling up at a slow pump and I laid the nozzle on the ground for a few seconds. Then it worked great? Why?
Rogues are good cars, many people own them and just about anyone I know who has one loves it … little 3 cylinder engine is why that car goes 40 miles per gallon … nothing wrong with that car , brand new for 30K , I wouldn’t mind driving one myself … and no car built today will go 400K miles , and nobody is buying a car to keep it for 20 years, those days are long gone , people buy new car every 3-4 years … if you don’t like CVT transmission, wait for Murano, they have regular transmissions , Kicks and Rogue come with CVT ..

Still love my Old skool vehicles
I can accept a Turbo but I don’t get the logic or engineering on manufacturers using 3 cylinder engines in fairly large vehicles?
Should i be grateful if i have the four cylinder 2.5 liter engine. I understand cvt are delicate because their purpose is to get high gas mileage not highspeed. I understand i need to drive conservatively to get the best advantage of the car. So to get it to 200,000 miles i need to drive like a grandpa😢 apart from being on top of the maintenance.
Cant do 3 cylinders. I love the Trax but 3 cylinders. Uh...No

CVTs are not meant to be floored and it actually makes them perform worse because the transmission needs to catch up to the engine revs. You’re better off going half throttle, off the line.

I would think the 1.5 L, 3 cylinder engine, would have beefier rods and pistons, maybe. My 1.6 L, 4 cylinder engine is great in my small car.
Car mfg are told what to build by New Car Dealership Association, car dealerships are actually franchisees of the Dealership Association
Owning a Nissan scares me
The original CVTs in Nissan vehicles were not well made or designed only time will time will tell if they are better now.
