I must admit I had my heart in my mouth when I saw this. So many horrible stories of decline in the UK especially after MY beloved town moved into the hands of Merseyside from its previous position in Lancashire I had dreamed of living there from a little girl living in Davyhulme (Manchester ) visiting my auntie Betty in Ainsdale ( interestingly most of it built by my great uncle ) I realised my dream and moved to Ainsdale, my youngest daughter being born in the Southport maternity hospital ( so the only real 'sand grounder ' in the family ) Enjoyed over 10 wonderful years before being forced (kicking and screaming) to move abroad due to Thatchers destruction of local Industry. It's 40 yrs on , and I cried watching your beautiful film. I needn't have worried..it's still beautiful. Thank you for the memories
You picked a great day for filming. Southport is one of my favourite places...Lord Street reminds me of Edinburghs princes Street...its so laid back..fish and chips sat in the town square then a walk to the pier for an ice cream. Thankyou for sharing❤
The size of Southport, the cleanliness.... well done Southport for keeping all those old buildings looking so well, all those open spaces, all looking so clean and well cared for!
Ive also been meaning to comment that the gift you give your viewers through your Walks is amazing. We were lucky to travel the world from 1970s to 1990s. Now my husband cant travel due to health issues so we can reminisce those wonderful times through Gimbal TV Walks....thank you so much.💜
Brings back memories of my childhood. My grandparents lived in Formby and we were there every month. Always went to the arcade since there was a toy shop. Looks almost the same from 45 years ago apart from empty shops. There used to be an indoor fountain and model train running round. Honstly brought back so many memories, thankyou mate.
The Wayfarers Arcade is absolutely stunning! The gift shop on the left side of the entrance is like a magical wonderland! Love visiting from Manchester ❤
It was nice to watch this ; I am from Southport - lived here all my life and I don't think when you live somewhere, you necessarily appreciate it. I live just outside the town centre in Birkdale and I have to admit, I tend not to go into the town centre too often due to the crowds. Not complaining at all as it is good for our town. Oh and a little fact, my family provided the pony rides on Southport beach for over 30 years. As a youngster I was summoned to help during the summer holidays. Another little fact; most people claim that whenever they visit Southport, the tide does not come in. I can assure you it does and we used to get washed off the beach with our ponies whilst the waves were crossing the coastal road. It has made me smile thinking of all the good memories. Thank you for taking the time to film our town :-)
southport is so good... i remember taking the bus here with my family as a kid going to the beach and arcades then shopping.. now i live here and its amazing
Thank you for filming in Southport. Now i am able to show my friends around the World the Town where i live. You have made the Town look great, filming on a bright sunny day brings out the best in the Town. The Tourism Office should employ you to promote the Town you did such a good job.

I was brought up in Southport, living on Lord St above a florist shop my parents owned. My husband and I moved south in 1966, but we returned many a time to visit family still there. I haven’t been back in years now due to age. Thank you so much for your tour, I’ve enjoyed it immensely. Much has changed but then much is how it was in a way. I shall send a link to my sister who still lives in the area, she’ll enjoy it too. Thank you again.

Having been living abroad for almost 30 years I love watching these videos. It reminds me of being a kid as we went to Southport for days out and the memories are fantastic. The outdoor swimming pool, sand dunes, pier, miniature railway and so much more. I even lived there for a short time. We used to go boating on lake by the pier, and the fairground was awesome. I always said Southport is the North West's hidden gem, and i mean it. It truly is amazing.
I was in Southport a few days ago! I decided to show my wife a location from my past. As a child back in the 1950/60's I often came here from Manchester for the day with my parents. This was long before distant package holidays became the norm! To me Southport was like going to Majorca when compared with the back streets of Manchester! Thanks for the upload! Great work!

I loved watching this as I grew up in Southport from the age of 10 to 18. In 1983 I left school and between school and going to college I worked at Rossi’s ice cream parlour, 40 years ago 😱 Back then it was proper home made Italian ice cream made on the premises upstairs, it used to come down in a little lift at the back of the shop in large metal containers. It was the best ice cream you’ve ever tasted and people would come from all over to get some. There was one flavour vanilla unless you had whippy ice cream, which was the same delicious quality which came in plain vanilla or strawberry and vanilla known as pink and white. I can tell you this is not the case now, they are using the Rossi name but that is the ONLY thing the same. Southport was a great place to grow up.
Love Southport..one of the destinations for holidays when i was younger ..nice to see they're looking after their town ! Unlike Rhyl and Blackpool which are both fallen to drugs drink and immigration unfortunately.. you're right though..more people needed for the Wayfarers arcade ! Lovely town ! Those that live there should be proud 👏
What a shame nearly all the shops in the Wayfarers arcade are closed. I’m sure it would make sense to drop the rents and encourage more independent shops in there. There used to be a lovely book shop in there.
I have a street like Wesley Street where I live. I do live in Southport though . Moved from Yorkshire about 20 years ago and it is a lovely place. It has some not so nice areas, like everywhere, but we have been happy here. Great video! You have made the town look really colourful and vibrant.

27:46 this street you’re walking on? Rumour has it that years and years ago back to Victorian times there were two split levels I believe and the shops are still below from that era all boarded up and the locals want to open it up again 🤩
My home town, although I'm ashamed to say I haven't been back for many a long year. I thought the place was looking great, in fact better than I remember. I must revisit soon. Although it was in Lancashire when I was born. Lovely video.
Thank you for putting this video together, I have been there on several occasions but not seen it like what you have shown in your video. I can honestly say this that during my visits I just thought that it was just all about shopping in Lord Street and taking a stroll down the longest pier that I know of. Thank you once again for the well put together video of Southport, I'm 76 years old now and watching the video has made me want to visit and see the beautiful places that I haven't seen before.
Thank you so much Ronald. That's the best feedback I could wish for and the reason I film these videos for my TH-cam Channel Your kind words have given me a great start to the day! Stay safe and well my friend Neil
Welcome 🙏 to my home town, if, you haven't been before, please come, you will not be disappointed...(best place ever,on North West Coast).....I moved 60 miles to be here,Best thing I ever did 😀 .regards mark......

You certainly got the weather that day. Great video. Looks a great town. Good tunes in this vid as well. Going in 6 days time for a day trip. Can't wait.
I visited Southport in 2018 on a day trip. But I only remember going down the street with the Park & Colonnades & the Obelisk. That's where our bus dropped us off! There was plenty of shops & cafes to look at on that Street alone! I loved you showing the Wayfarers Arcade I must of walked past that! Im too young to remember the Wedding of Princess Diana tho her dress looked very Regal! Totally missed Southport Pier it's beautiful what a beautiful day it was when you were there in Southport! The water looked so blue! The Ice cream shop certainly did look the best! Never seen so many different types of Ice cream flavours & cones to choose from!😊 Really enjoyed watching this!🤩 What a very long way along the Prom to the actual Beach 🏖️ Wow!
We’re only a half hour drive from Southport so we visit here regularly, it’s so much nicer than Blackpool and there’s plenty things to do, boating lake, crazy golf, kids play area and arcades. You might even see Elvis performing if you’re lucky It’s how I imagine Blackpool used to be years ago before the clubs and pubs full of hen parties! Best seaside town in north west imo
We come to Southport nearly every week. We go to a little cafe in Wesley Street also another on Lord Street (which has just changed ownership) and the tea rooms in Kings Gardens when it’s nice enough to sit outside. We love a walk along the prom or down the pier and around the lakes. Such a beautiful place but have to admit never been to the lawn mower museum, perhaps investigate this next time we visit 😊
I’m going to Southport next month and I’m going to stay there for a couple of days. I can’t wait to see the Southport model railway and the beautiful view of the Irish Sea looking towards Blackpool and wales.
Fun fact: Nevill St use to be flat ground back in the 1800s, from lord stall the way to pleasure land. They paved over it a long time ago to turn it into a ramp. If you visit the joke shop, and a few others that end of the road, you can still go downstairs to the place where the front doors of shops used to be
Actually, if you want to find the beach, head to B&M on Lord St and head down that road past Andy's Snack Bar and head towards The Marine Lake. It's just over the other side of that, my super hint for a short cut, I actually live here.
27:12 I wanted to look inside the amusement parlor where I used to always get my money back on the shooting machine! I was born in Southport long ago. Nice walk! There was no 'playing on the beach' because it used to be full of an oil spill. 31:06 Over there was a charbanc company which offered 'Mystery Tour', Granma liked to take me on those trips to some country place with a tea shop. 3:16 That 'thing' on left (which you avoided) WAS a beautiful old hotel 'Victoria Hotel' demolished 1971.
Thanks so much for this Quality Video - This is very Nostalgic for me... I was born and raised in Southport (where most of my Family live) but I've now lived in the Caribbean for several years. My last trip was a couple of years ago and I see things have changed somewhat but your Video shows Southport as we have always known it - 'Sunny Southport'. The Video Quality is superb and your tour was comprehensive and professional. Hope if you are in the Caribbean, you include us in your world video tour. Well Done !
I have always loved Southport, it is quite underrated and overlooked, in favour of Blackpool. It has never lost its charm for me and I always look forward to visiting when I can xD
Hi gimbal walk I've been to Southport it's gorgeous place and me and mum went to the pier and took some lovely photos and I was Blackpool from the pier and had a shot on old penny arcade and I didn't want to leave to go back home where I live It was long drive I went to Liverpool for the day and must say maggies cafe the toasties was so yummy 😋 ❤️
Thanks for that, my old home town, live in Newton Abbot by Torquay now. Looks lovely and the weather was nice :-) nice to see my old place of work Broadbents and Boothroyds AKA Beales now, still being there in Wafarers Arcade. Can definitely vouch for Rossies Ice Cream as well, it's fantastic, love the PInk and White whippys. There's some great Fish and Chip shops in Southport as well :-)
Really enjoyed your walk around Southport today. My family stayed in Bath Street. We always find Southport warm and friendly also the streets are well taken care off. Love a walk round the marine lake and along the pier. We also find that Southport has a nice mix of shops particularly like Royal Arcade. I have seen your walks round Scarborough which We also enjoyed watching especially the Harbour. Look forward to your next walk
You picked a lovely day to video Southport! Endless pier, along with a massive beach and finally, the sea!! Another great seaside place to visit! When you take us along on these day trips and you get ice cream, please ask us what flavor to choose for us too! Cheeky Neil! lol I will try the raspberry too! ;) 🍦
2years later the pier is closed and needs big money for repairs ect, many shops like elsewhere are closed and parts of the town need some TLS it’s such a shame it’s a lovely seaside town visited 20th/21st September 2024 stayed at THE WATERFRONT HOTEL which I would recommend.Fireworks which we did not know about were spectacular all the families and everyone enjoyed the display it was very busy Would love to visit more often but it’s a long not so great journey from Leeds Yorkshire Ignore any negatives from people and see for yourselves we had a short but good time
First off all I'd like to thank you for the amazing and informative videos you put out, we can always check a place out before visiting so we don't have any disappointment, secondly, the songs that are accompanying this video are fantastic,, songs I've never heard,, long shot but any chance you could give me a list of what and who sings them 🤣🤣, please keep up with the fantastic videos 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks so much If you use the ‘Shazam’ app (it’s totally free) you can just press a button and it will tell you any song you can hear whether on a TH-cam video, in a restaurant or in a movie etc - it’s brilliant and completely free to use)
After some time following you around our favourite South West resorts I now find you have been following me! being your two recent posts of Lytham St Annes and Southport. I have lived in Southport for some 25+years now but grew up in Lytham St Annes from the age of 7 and again lived there for some 25+years and only recently sold my late mothers flat there. My favourite will always be Lytham St Annes though, but you missed half of the job…. Lytham. Lytham St Annes is two towns, St.Annes on Sea and Lytham but as a borough it is name-wise merged into Lytham St Annes, (LSA). Unless you did Lytham in another video we didn’t see any of Lytham this time. The Windmill at Lytham is a great landmark and Lytham green and the town centre is gorgeous with the flowers and restaurants, and free parking in the town. A little anecdote to start you off on the Windmill if you do come back. Built in the early 1800’s on what is now Lytham Green, in later years the posh houses being built opposite it claimed it should be taken down as it was an industrial blot on the landscape. How times change and it is my favourite view when driving “home” to LSA. Back to Southport and again great to “follow” a “non residents” view of what I see and live in every day, fascinating and well done. It is also famous for its Air and Flower shows which bring in substantial numbers of tourists. The Food festival is also a big attraction. Can’t forget to mention the backing music. Really good. Keep up the good work!
Hello. As I live in Liverpool I have been to Southport too many times to count. I still enjoyed your video, you showed us a few nice eating places and that scrumptious ice cream shop that I must visit next time I goto Southport. The Wayfairers Aycade is so stunning, a few years ago it was bustling every shop taken and a lovely furniture shop called the Wayfairers. My late husband visited a very good book shop upstairs, they have ow moved to my city Liverpool. Thank you for sharing. Barbara from Liverpool.
Loved so much Happy memories for me as a child Visiting my aunt on many weekends for years Loved your video Wayfarers arcade is still as beautiful I remember it had a fountain and water area right at the part where the display of royal outfits where! Missing that Still as beautiful as I remember though Streets too and obviously Lord St So much more to see You could go back?! 😎💕 Hope you do
Well that was a very professional video. We retired here from Manchester 4 years ago and love it here. I'm just a bit disappointed (on closer inspection) that some of the integral parts have been neglected and fallen into disrepair - which we have noticed has crept in whilst we have been here (under the watch of MP Damien Moore/Sefton Council). When I came to live here a fellow worker told me the decline began over 10 years ago after the change of county from Lancs to Merseyside. Still, there's a lot going for Southport. You missed the other prominent ice cream shop at the and tbe south end if Lord Street and if you had continued the large cafe at the end of the pier which has an amusement arcade dealing only in old pre-decimal currency, I played your video at double speed and still found it informative and interesting. Well done!
Regarding the Pier. When it was built the sea came right up to just below the entrance ! The land has all been reclaimed over time. It was built to accept steam boats that would tour around the coast of Britain. The land naturally falls away very shallow hence its length in order at high tide to accommodate the steam boats
at 44:49 , in the shot to Blackpool, you've also got the Fells/Mountains of the Lake district. fairly sure , the tower is in the dip between Scafell pike and Scafell.
I often feel saddened when visiting old Elnhlish seaside towns. English people are no longer satisfied with fish and chips, rock, a guest house with shared bathrooms etc and these places are now in steep decline. I think they need to re-invent themselves and give modern people a reason to visit. Southport! Congratulations on your vision and enterprise! I can't wait to visit and discover the new you.
I worked in Wayfarers Arcade in the early 90s at the Millwheel restaurant. It was always very busy, and all of the empty shops you see now that are empty, were all very profitable businesses back then. No shop was empty lower or upper level. All of the stores were unique and boutique, most selling high quality and high value products. This is the worst example of death of the high street. All caused by online shopping and Amazon
I must admit I had my heart in my mouth when I saw this. Merseyrail is a train every 15 minutes from Liverpool and Hunts Cross, including on summer Sundays. Northern run two trains an hour to Wigan and Manchester.
The line to Southport (Merseyrail Northern Line) was one of the first to be electrified in the country back in 1903.
Thanks Neil!
27:46 this street you’re walking on? Rumour has it that years and years ago back to Victorian times there were two split levels I believe and the shops are still below from that era all boarded up and the locals want to open it up again 🤩
Wow - no way!
I'd love to see those.
Wow what an incredible place, its so interesting & spacious .... thankyou for the visit !!!!
Thank you too
What a fantastic walk loved it from beginning to end keep on walking 🚶🏻👍❤️
Thank you 👍
Very nice video 📹 Gimbal, keep them coming mate
Thank you so much Paul! Got some crackers on the way!
My home town, although I'm ashamed to say I haven't been back for many a long year. I thought the place was looking great, in fact better than I remember. I must revisit soon. Although it was in Lancashire when I was born. Lovely video.
Thank you John ❤️
Thank you for putting this video together, I have been there on several occasions but not seen it like what you have shown in your video. I can honestly say this that during my visits I just thought that it was just all about shopping in Lord Street and taking a stroll down the longest pier that I know of. Thank you once again for the well put together video of Southport, I'm 76 years old now and watching the video has made me want to visit and see the beautiful places that I haven't seen before.
Thank you so much Ronald.
That's the best feedback I could wish for and the reason I film these videos for my TH-cam Channel
Your kind words have given me a great start to the day!
Stay safe and well my friend
Neil
Welcome 🙏 to my home town, if, you haven't been before, please come, you will not be disappointed...(best place ever,on North West Coast).....I moved 60 miles to be here,Best thing I ever did 😀 .regards mark......
Formby is a good place to film (In my opinion). Very good beach and nice village with rail connection
Ooh great suggestion thank you I will definitely film Formby 👍👍❤️
I have been looking shothport since my partner died it's last place we when t thank u for finding it for me I love your walks
Thank you - hope you’re well ❤️
Looks much nicer than Gt Yarmouth 😊
I like both to be honest!
@@GimbalWalkTV I used to live in Norwich , that's a nice medieval city...Has it's bad areas too though.... Gt Yarmouth is in bad need of renovation , and is populated by some of the poorest people in the Uk...
I have to say this tour video has made me want to move to Southport. So I’m house searching to be closer to this spectacular place in the UK. ❤
Never seen so many different types of Ice cream flavours & cones to choose from!😊 Really enjoyed watching this!🤩
What a very long way along the Prom to the actual Beach 🏖️ Wow!
We’re only a half hour drive from Southport so we visit here regularly, it’s so much nicer than Blackpool and there’s plenty things to do, boating lake, crazy golf, kids play area and arcades. You might even see Elvis performing if you’re lucky
It’s how I imagine Blackpool used to be years ago before the clubs and pubs full of hen parties!
Lawn mower museum sounds intriguing doesn’t it 🤣
Thanks really enjoyed this so many parts of Southport I never knew existed.
Thanks so much!
Have a lovely weekend and thank you for watching my channel!
@@GimbalWalkTV I do enjoy your walks as I can't walk very far I have to sit down all the time.
I find it amazing how far you can walk in 45 minutes 🤩
I’m going to Southport next month and I’m going to stay there for a couple of days. I can’t wait to see the Southport model railway and the beautiful view of the Irish Sea looking towards Blackpool and wales.
Have an amazing time mate!
It does look like a nice town centre and amazingly they actually still have banks with branches 👍. A free cuppa too
Ah yes! The church cafe was lovely with lovely peolle
Hey mate great vlog as always never been to Southport looks lovely cheers 💯😊
It is - top place!
Fun fact:
Nevill St use to be flat ground back in the 1800s, from lord stall the way to pleasure land.
Thanks Jason!
Love this thanks fore doing it
Our pleasure!
I love the British lawnmower museum here
Not been - is it more exciting than it sounds?
Yep! It sounds boring but it's more interesting than most think!
Well Done !
Really enjoyed that. I live in Southport, so glad you got a sunny day and the trees were in leaf.
Thank you 🙏
I liked Southport, so many different styles of buildings, and as always love your choice of music. 👍
Many thanks!
I have always loved Southport, it is quite underrated and overlooked, in favour of Blackpool. It has never lost its charm for me and I always look forward to visiting when I can xD
Well said!
Fab memories thank you Lauren!
There's some great Fish and Chip shops in Southport as well :-)
Well said Stephen! Great place and I love it there now!
Fantastic city
It really is!
lovely video Neil Southport looks great another place on my to-do list now
Was a long walk this but I loved every bit of it
Really enjoyed your walk around Southport today.
Southport is a stunning 😍 place, hopefully retire there in around 5 years 🙏 😀 👍
You should!
great vidio have never been to southport but i shall visit in the future
Thank you Michael 👍❤️
CLEAN UP THE TOWN . BRAVO SOUTHPORT !
You picked a lovely day to video Southport! Endless pier, along with a massive beach and finally, the sea!! Another great seaside place to visit! When you take us along on these day trips and you get ice cream, please ask us what flavor to choose for us too! Cheeky Neil! lol I will try the raspberry too! ;) 🍦
I spent a week in Southport in 2010 at the Vitalise care home it was an enjoyable week and I went to Blackpool but Southport is a nicer place
Lovely isn't it
2years later the pier is closed and needs big money for repairs ect, many shops like elsewhere are closed and parts of the town need some TLS it’s such a shame it’s a lovely seaside town visited 20th/21st September 2024 stayed at THE WATERFRONT HOTEL which I would recommend.Fireworks which we did not know about were spectacular all the families and everyone enjoyed the display it was very busy
Would love to visit more often but it’s a long not so great journey from Leeds Yorkshire
Ignore any negatives from people and see for yourselves we had a short but good time
Loved the street at beginning wish there were more in UK and from start to finish great walk and only a quid for a 99 what more could you want.
Thanks so much
If you use the ‘Shazam’ app (it’s totally free) you can just press a button and it will tell you any song you can hear whether on a TH-cam video, in a restaurant or in a movie etc - it’s brilliant and completely free to use)
Thank you 🙏
Thank you for checking out my recommendation x
You’re welcome thank you for the tip!!
Been many times love the Marina x
Will film that for you
Great videos
Thanks Barbara!
Have a great week 👍❤️
Loved so much
Happy memories for me as a child
Visiting my aunt on many weekends for years
Loved your video
Wayfarers arcade is still as beautiful
I remember it had a fountain and water area right at the part where the display of royal outfits where!
Missing that
Still as beautiful as I remember though
Streets too and obviously Lord St
So much more to see
You could go back?! 😎💕
Hope you do
Oh yes. I love Southport now after this trip!
You missed the other prominent ice cream shop at the and tbe south end if Lord Street and if you had continued the large cafe at the end of the pier which has an amusement arcade dealing only in old pre-decimal currency,
I played your video at double speed and still found it informative and interesting. Well done!
Regarding the Pier. When it was built the sea came right up to just below the entrance ! The land has all been reclaimed over time. It was built to accept steam boats that would tour around the coast of Britain. The land naturally falls away very shallow hence its length in order at high tide to accommodate the steam boats
Been there... It's a shirt-hole!
at 44:49 , in the shot to Blackpool, you've also got the Fells/Mountains of the Lake district. fairly sure , the tower is in the dip between Scafell pike and Scafell.
What’s so great about the wayfarers most of the shops are closed
My son lives with his Fiancee in Birkdale Southport where the Golf courses are
I often feel saddened when visiting old Elnhlish seaside towns.
Agree with this - seasides need to move with the times or they'll become extinct
Would go for a day
Never been, looks quite nice must try visit
It's great
I worked in Wayfarers Arcade in the early 90s at the Millwheel restaurant.
It was always very busy, and all of the empty shops you see now that are empty, were all very profitable businesses back then. No shop was empty lower or upper level. All of the stores were unique and boutique, most selling high quality and high value products.
This is the worst example of death of the high street. All caused by online shopping and Amazon
