- Southport is situated on the Sefton coast and is easy to reach from all over the North West. Close to both Liverpool and Manchester, Southport is a great coastal town to escape the hustle and bustle of a big city for a day out, short break. Join me as I explore Southport Seafront, Pleasureland Southport, Southport lakes, Southport Pier - (the 2nd longest pier in the UK) and so much more! *Thanks to PlattyNumm for the Drone footage

Southport is fantastic. We moved here 19 years ago and it's a brilliant place to bring up your family. Sure the town centre is struggling not to look rundown but not many high streets have avoided this over the last few years. The villages surrounding are lovely. Churchtown, Birkdale and Ainsdale. We'll never move
Thanks for watching Allan
whereabouts in Southport would you recommend? Contemplating moving my family up from Liverpool to Southpoty
@@pigeonpedia4856 Churchtown village which is beautiful and quiet. Birkdale village, more lively or Ainsdale village (both with great train links to Liverpool) The nearer to the villages you can get the better.
I was a Southport boy
WOrked at pleasureland 1964 until about 1970. Been in nz since 2975. Many thanks for this walk
Wow . Thanks Tim .. remember to subscribe
This was interesting to me as my Grandmother (Florence Blagrove 1888-1980) was born in Southport, her father ran a pub there, then she & her new husband (Hurtle Daulby) migrated to Adelaide, South Australia ❤ Nanna used to take us all to the beach & she would often have a little cry about missing Southport. Thanks Tim.
On the subject of Southport and the long distance from the sea, this is due to several factors, most recently the closure of the Port of Preston and the end of dredging the River Ribble which led to the port. The result of this and the silt has meant the sandbanks have changed considerably.
You mention boats between the coasts, well when Southport pier was first built in 1860 there were regular boat trips to and from Liverpool, Llandudno, Lytham, Blackpool, Fleetwood and the Isle of Man from the pier's head. The deep water channel needed by the steamers started to silt up and the pier had to be extended by over two hundred meters to reach a navigable depth again.
As the years went by the silting up continued and with it the pleasure boats could no longer work out of Southport.
Great work Tim!
shame its not able to do them anymore , thanks for watching Neil
I could see spending a nice couple of days just wandering around the town and checking it out.
Thanks I love living in Southport - there's a lot of money being poured in to the town.
The shells are Razor shell fish we have tons of them - they are delicious fried in butter garlic and parsley - also Southport shrimps are second to none
I live in southport and I’m so glad a TH-camr did a vid on it!
me too! lol did I make it look ok?
Most of the UKs seaside resorts are depressing and rundown dystopian nightmares. But Southport seems to be holding up reasonably well.
lol
Somehow Southport seems to have avoided the worst of the decline and depression that befell so many of our seaside resorts. I don't know whether it had a more diversified economy which allowed it to avoid falling into the traps Blackpool fell into, for example. On the other hand, since the 2008/2009 recession, there has definitely been some decline. Parts of the town centre look shabbier than when I was a kid, and there's the problem of retailers going bust and leaving empty shop units that seems to blight everywhere in the country now.
Still, the area around the Marine Lake and the seafront is nice, as is Hesketh Park and Lord Street, and some parts of Southport are very wealthy.
@@michaelkobylko2969 Still a good place to go to in the summer time Mike 👍
I've lived in Southport for years and it's going downhill rapidly. It's falling apart no money is being spent. When I was a kid it was an amazing place to be now it's very boring
I live in southport its not holding well at all, most of the shops are now closed down and if they havent closed down its a poundshop, the nightlife is practically non existent, the beach is a field and needs a lawnmower going over it, it really isnt good
I remember going to Southport brilliant place.
agree
It brings back memories from childhood, Southport is my late mother favourite place.
I love it here!
Last time I went it was 2004
I WILL SAY IT AGAIN TIM ,THE QUALITY OF YOUR CAMERA WORK AND VIDEOS ARE EXELENT.
Glad you like them!
I loved growing up in Southport, so many parks and green spaces, id love to move back.
There waa a Hovercraft that ran one summer in the 70s between southport and blackpool, i remember my dad telling me about it, way before my time though!
Grew up in Southport myself and I can remember the hovercraft that used to go from Southport pier across to Blackpool when I was a kid in the 1970's.
Haven’t been to Southport for years. Thanks for sharing what a lot there is to do. Take care. Nick
Thanks for watching!
Walking out to the sea with my grandad felt like it took lifetime when I was a kid. The ripples in the sand always hurt my feetl always left my sandals with my gran as she sunbathed.
They have a great air show in Southport and various events throughout the summer.
We went to southport 2 weeks ago, its fabulous 👌 really lovely place. Nice coffee ☕ shops ant tea rooms on Lord Street
It really is!
I love Southport you choose a lovely day for it. Southport high street is like going back in time such an unspoilt place.
I agree
Wait 'til you come back in a couple of years and see the New York style skyscraper they apparently are going to build!(not joking)
Nice Vlog Tim on Southport. My wife is from Southport therefore, I have visited many times and we were married there (this year we will be celebrating 21 years) very pretty town…
I think so !
Mad seeing my hometown covered like this, thanks for making Southport look good aha!
Lol you are welcome
Haha yeah I completely agree I'm just watching this like yes yes yeah YES
Thanks for that video Tim it was excellent. I live in Southport and born in the town. The pier is a lovely walk i enjoy doing from one end of the pier to the other. Pleasureland use to be the sister park to Blackpool. i really enjoy walking along by the Marine Lake to.
15:44 - There was a hovercraft service from Southport pier to Blackpool central pier in the early 80s I seem to remember. Didn't last long.
Long shells are razor clams - delicious smoked!
15:35 - Grew up in Southport. Years ago when I was a kid in the 1970's there used to be a hovercraft service that used to go from Southport pier across to Blackpool.
Going to visit Southport pier next weekend thanks for the video
I live in Southport ,Thank you so much x
Thank you for making such a beautiful vlog.I live in Southport, moving here in the 80s. I've travelled a fair bit around the UK and hear alot of negativity about re the 'good old days', but there is so much to do in Southport and it has so many positives as shown in your vlog. Happy travels..🌻
Glad you enjoyed it! thanks Sandi
I'm a miserable sod so not many places excite me, but Southport is easily in my top 5. It's a nice idyllic seaside town with lovely people. Better than Blackpool imo, less tacky kitsch chav shops. The others are Edinburgh, Watford, Bournemouth and Surrey.
I have really fond memories of Southport - day out with Mum and Dad and nephew - I can just picture my late mum sat on the sands where you were allowed to park up against the rear wheel arch of my Dads navy blue Talbot Alpine eating a bag of chips in the sun. Nostalgia eh?
Yes the best memories the places have for all of us and like you said bag of chips and sunshine
You make Southport look stunning Tim, during the summer they have powerboat rides on the lake .
lol yes I know I want to go back and hop on one!
It's about 30years since i was in Southport. The front is beautiful at night. Was lucky enough to stay in Bing House RBL convalescent home, overlooking the front. I believe it's been sold since. Town was lovely too. Enjoyed every minute of my stay.
It's a great place
Loving this walk Tim,beautiful sunshine and lovely weather, lovely views from the pier too.
Razor clams.....the lake is beautiful all year round, my dogs love their daily walk around it 💙💗
thanks Jillian! yes its great all year round
Good video there mate, well done! Thanks for the nice comments about my hometown Southport its' appreciated.
Any time!
@@WalkWithMeTim Thanks again, always appreciated!!
Great video thanks for posting it. I watched it with my Wife, we both live in Southport and both said we want to go and explore the gardens and pier again! When it’s on your doorstep never seem to make the most of what is there. It is a nice place to live.
Totally agree, thanks for the comment, hope u subscribed 🤗
Yes it is,I don't make full use,I should x
Yes do, take a good look in the gardens as lots of work went into that and it was my memories of great times there with my mum and dad that made me get involved in the refurb of the gardens via applying for lottery funding. Much work has gone into same with us volunteers giving much love and time, you can always join us! Gardeners for the community garden always needed, if you can weed you are in there !! We also do great fun days /nights/ open air cinemas, love those !!
Making my home town look great, thank you
Recently moved back after 25 years away and love it.
There use to be a taxi hovercraft that would take you to Blackpool
And not sure if mentioned previously but they're razor clam shells :)
thanks yes I still think people would use it
iON ghOST, grew up in Southport and remember the hovercraft service that used to go from Southport pier across to Blackpool.
I live in Southport, this was a good Vlog of the seafront, many complain about where they live but I like it here as it has MANY great places.
You should have gone to Victoria Park, that is also on the sea front, just a little down from Pleasureland, they hold a massive flower show, music festivals, food festivals, RC Airplane, RC car and RC boat competitions/shows etc, they have specially built race tracks and boating areas for this. Another great park is Hesketh park, this has a Victorian era observatory, another lake, a conservatory, that is just out of the town center 5-10 min walk. Deeper into the town, in Churchtown their is another park called Botanic Gardens, that has many species of birds in an aviary, another lake for boats, a conservatory etc. Curchtown its self is old but kept well, all white small buildings/shops in the center.
They also do the airshow in Southport, firework shows, as well as golf competitions on its famous golf courses. You could definitely visit again and get lots more interesting things.
Thanks for the tip Nathan
@@WalkWithMeTim no problem, i see you get about a bit, so perhaps something for a future video! Not many people vlog southport, or make videos of a similar nature!
@@WalkWithMeTim the drone shots where ace as well! Main reason i watched as rarely get to see southport from that prospective!
Southport is genuinely one of the best places in the UK. I may be a bit biased as you can definitely see my house in loads of overhead shots but it's still one of my favourite places. The other day i skated through Victoria Park and my god i forgot how beautiful it was. Thanks mate, I really appreciate it.
thanks for watching it! I love Southport too
Excellent video Tim and great to see you in my beautiful town. Those shells are razor clams. Delicious steamed in garlic butter and white wine. :)
you are making me hungry
Tim, I grew up in Skelmersdale just down the road. A place worthy of a read, it has Europe’s biggest roundabout (half a mile circumference) and a golden dome where people practice TM medication. It was part of the 1960’s planned town abominations. It makes Southport look like Monte Carlo. I loved Southport as a kid though and as a result I still do. Fascinating town, lovely architecture and a glimpse into the past. I still take my son there now so he knows how life was for me as a kid 30 or so years ago. For me, we should treasure these places. They’re a shadow of their former selves but there is a certain romance all the same and we should be glad they’re not lost just yet
Have yu been to Botanic in Churchtown ? Great for you and your son. Also Ainsdale has a remarkable beach, go in the morning as you pay to get on so may as well get your moneys worth !!
@@deniseroney I have indeed! Growing up we went there a lot and now so does he 🙂 Ainsdale beach sounds good, I will do this. Thankyou!!
Hi Tim, many thanks for filming my home town, I must've spent my entire childhood in this town, I remember Lord Street for shopping, Hesketh Park for a nice picnic, also interestingly, the Gallopers that you found at the start of the pier, used to be in the Pleasureland theme park, (Owned by the Silcock family) there used to be a wooden coaster, fun house, helter skelter and ghost train there also, as well as Southport Zoo, I loved it all. Also the site the Premier Inn sits on used to be an outdoor lido (Open air baths) as we used to call it, Of note, slightly further down the coast towards Liverpool, there used to be a Pontins resort as well which always looked like a POW camp to me.
In the town centre is a big clock tower, I hope it's still there, I believe it's now a Morrisons supermarket, I kid you not it used to be the main Bus station for Ribble buses, I also understand that there was a rail connection there as well at one time.
Honestly in its hey day it was the most glorious and lovely place to be, Southport is also home to the countries only Lawn Mower Museum, as well as the worst Football team ever.
Towards Liverpool you'd pass through Birkdale (Think Golf Open) Crosby (Where the Anthony Gormley sculptures sit in the water) Formby too (Red Squirrels).
I look forward to your review of the town centre, the hotels, shops and bars.
So many great memories and a place were I felt I could be me, wonderful to see it all again.
Thank you 'Tim the Intrepid Explorer'
Aylesbury is now my home, as you know, it's a convenient place to stop on the way from Gee Tee Yarmouth towards Weymouth and Portland - I'll make sure we have the kettle on for you. TC, regards to your growing family too.
Wow thanks paul 😃 great info and history
Pontins is still there, there's a music weekender there this weekend. It's even more run down than it always was. It was used as a base for the army when they were helping out with covid testing in Liverpool. Take a look at the online reviews, allegedly from army personnel.
Funny you mention pontins, some pictures I took popped up on my Facebook memories this week and I said exactly the same thing, even the barbed wire fence is shaped to stop you getting out rather than in.
I spent quite a bit of time in the open air swimming pool as a kid, the time broken up by 18 holes on the pitch and putt at the side of the pier
Another Sandgrounder here! Spent my childhood in Southport until 1987 when after I left Meols Cop i joined the Army....never been back since though! The places you said Paul also brings back memories. Favourite place, Steamport museum. Back then H&S was out the window so i could spend all Saturday climbing all over the trains and no one would tell you off. Shame when it closed down.
Need to visit here and the blue sky looks beautiful too🥰
Southport is a nice beach I remember going for a day out there with my mum in the early 2000s and it was quite a clear day and we could see the blackpool tower in the distance ❤🔙🤗
yes I love that about southport
Another fact is that Red Rum the racing horse used to train on the beach in southport. There a mural of red rum and a statue of him.
Love the videos. Great camera work, fair reviews, simple, clear and concise. Thanks a lot for your effort.
that's kind of you to say thanks James
Never been to or thought about going to Southport before. Not heard much about it but looks nice in the sun.
it does! but different with the big lakes
Another great & fantastic video of Southport Seafront & Attractions Tour👍👍👍👍👍👍
thanks sir
At the end of the miniature railway used to be Happy Land, a childrens amusement park!
All gone now and replaced with shopping area, Dunelm, Matalan, shoe shop, pet shop etc oh and a drive thru Maccyds, couple of years ago we got a pub/restaraunt which I wasn't sure about, it was built where the huge play area was on the corner next to Peter Pans, been a success, recently got a Cafe Nero coffee shop directly oppo the entrance to miniature railway at side of pier, it has changed so much yet still seems the same!? Do you recall the pool, that now has a hotel, 7 screen cinema, ten pin bowling, restaurant or two, gym, as said so many changes but all absorbed greatly, just need a new pier now! :(
Excellent Vlog Tim and looks even better on a 4k rewatch, so nice to msee such a beatiful well maintained seaside town, you really did it justice, this could easily be used by the local tourist board to promote the area.
Absolutely but why would they pay .. they get it free lol
Yep! They do zilcch for the town!
I live here, it’s a really nice place to live.
We seem to be having a tourism boom lately, town is always packed especially when the weather is nice.
agree
My grandparents regularly took me to Southport when I was little. Don’t get to visit as much as I’d like, so it’s lovely to see your video. Thanks so much.
You are welcome
Thanks for sharing ,loved the old slot machines you dont see them these days,
Thanks for this walk Tim. As a family we often been to Southport when visiting family in Liverpool.
Many hours spent there, walked the Pier & sat listening to the singers & watching people dancing at the cafe down there eating fish n chips. Great memories & the sun always shone. Yes the Park & Ride is brilliant at £3 a car too👍
wow £3 you cant go wrong
I am from Yorkshire but live in Liverpool, we are going to Southport Sunday, it is just nice to get out in the fresh air for a few hours 😊It will be nice when the boats etc are open again. Also of all the years of going there you will hardley ever see the tide in lol , it goes out as soon as it comes in
lol yes like St Annes
Don't speak too soon you get down there when there is a Spring tide and you will get a shock !!
I remember many years ago the old penny arcade at the end of the pier used to a lot better than it is today. It had a lot of proper vintage games from automata to those classic smaller machines which are still there today. Unfortunately some aren't in the best condition I think one of them was jammed when I went plus they had an old fashioned working model that never worked but it's nice that they have a laughing sailor and a Zoltar.
Many years ago where Ainsdale beach is, down the road from Pontins, there was a train station which was part of the Cheshire Lines. If you want to do a long walk, I highly recommend the Cheshire Lines one. Some of the trackbed has vanished though or been taken over by farmers and mother nature.
Across the road from Pontins, there is a boarded up pub called The Sands. Behind that there is a hidden lake!
The Sands was a Nightclub in the seventies,Fantastic!!
My old hometown before living in Devon 🥰
The lovely weather Tim made up for the rainy day here inKentucky. Wonderful to walk with you in the sunshine today at a beautiful and fun place. Thanks ☀️
Thanks Melissa
I’ve spent many happy years in Southport when I used to work in Liverpool. There are some really nice parts of Southport and some really bad areas too like anywhere really but credit to Sefton Council they are trying to keep the town clean, tidy and modern.
I went to Southport, I think in 1989 & 1990ish and participated in the '24 hour Sailing Race' on the seafront lake, with a team from Somerset.
We did reasonably well, for a novice team of dingy sailors, in the first year.
We went back for the second year, but it was in the aftermath of a hurricane that went up through the North Atlantic.
The dingy capsized before we even crossed the start line and buried the mast top in the mud at the bottom of the lake (the lake was only 4' deep).
Eventually we fixed the mast too and completed the race.
My everlasting memory of these events was;
The loud music provided by a succession of live rock bands from the beer tent,
No sleep as a result (also caused by having to get up every four hours to crew the dingy for two hours),
Being reacquainted with scotch pie, chips, mushy peas and gravy, from a nearby chip shop (the name of which I don't recall). A fantastic treat for a Southerner.
Thanks for nudging the old grey matter 😁
Lol some memories shared there lol
It is the Annual Yacht Race it is held every year!
Great stuff Tim. I've not been to Southport since 1979. I had a friend named Amanda who sadly passed away in 2019 at the age of only 64, she helped to run a group in our local area that focusses on Autism. I help to run the group after almost a decade, and I will inform the group about this at their next meeting. Apparently Amanda left a huge amount of money in her will when she passed away, and the group have saved up this to go somewhere sometime this spring/summer season. I have chosen Southport among my choices, completely at random, and I'll most likely mention it being as I know someone in the group who knows a thing or more about model/miniature railways. My late friend Amanda came from nearby Liverpool incidentally.
Sorry to hear about Amanda , yes to southport ,That's sound like a lovely idea Robert .. I'm glad the video helped
The town is nothing like it was in 1979 sadly. It’s heyday has long since gone. Never fails to amaze me why people still come here at all!
because its a nice day out?
It was not a day out actually, it was a family holiday at the nearby Pontins holiday village in Ainsdale. That was when a Pontins holiday was really a Pontins holiday, deffo.
@@stevenmoran4060 Rubbish! If you don't like it move.....or go volunteer in one of the groups out there to try and bring it back to as you called it the 'heyday' !
We lived in Southport for a long time. They are razor shells. Never seen so many together so maybe it's the storms. You should wear shoes on the beach. Jellyfish wash up and there can be sea urchins too. There used to be boats to Blackpool in Victorian times but because it's the entrance to the river Ribble it has silted up and isn't deep enough any more. You forgot to go to the cafe under the pier at the entrance where Elvis sings. You make the place look beautiful
the cafe under the pier ...noo how did I miss it
Yes it's next to the crazy golf. When you see the original Victorian carousel, look towards the sea and down. There's a cafe there where people sit outside and listen to live singers (Elvis etc). Under the amusement arcade. Where you buy tickets for speedboat trips, motor boats and pedaloes on the marine lake
Hi Tim loved Southport certainly different never been there before so thank you for showing us it certainly was different under the pier
you are welcome sally
Love Southport 💙
Wow, that pier is MASSIVE!!! Doesn't seem to have a sea front as such; can't wait to see what the town looks like. Thanks very much for your work Tim, I really enjoyed it.
Thanks for watching Jeff
I can remember going to pontins Southport when I was younger and we got stuck in the mud flats on the beach 😬 pretty scary tbf. Love the pontins videos my family have been to every single one when I was younger they were such fun makes me sad how some of them have gone into such a state
The pier arcade mirrors the fun Palace in Blackpool...both owned by silcocks amusements...Great video
from Blackpool lol
Razor clams
Brilliant & very informative thank's.!💞
Thanks for the interesting walk Tim. It looks like a lovely place and very well kept - no litter anywhere!
Glad you enjoyed it Wendy! yes I noticed that
Some place in the summer went there when it was 36 degrees last summer it’s was a rollercoaster 24 hours that’s all am sayin🤣 belter place to have a break some boss pubs about aswell
Many-a person has been known to escape to Southport for odd weekends (on their bull or with one or two mates) to unwind/get away from annoying flatmates for a bit/etc and Southport’s never let down on that front, theme park or no theme park. Belter place indeed.
Love southport, need more ppl to go. but will always have a warm place in my heart.
thanks for another great vlog.. lots of childhood memories of beautiful Southport. We used to go here every Sunday with my mates .getting the train to Liverpool Lime street.. then getting train directly to Southport. .i remember the wooden roller coaster too, omg it was so dangerous but fun too. Southport has not changed that much tbh.. its still clean and well kept as usual.. shopping there too is great.. They also have stunning parks like the Botanic Gardens with Arborteum which is must to visit...They used to host the Annnal Flower show their as well. The shells you showed us on the beach are cuttlefish shells, so its best to wear some footwear when walking on the beach. Thanks again for vlog. great work Tim
wow thanks for sharing Kristina
Don't forget the volunteers too!!
Just started the video now. I have watched a few of your Pontins videos and I am hoping you visited the Southport one. It's like a WW2 war movie setting.
Yes coming soon
@@WalkWithMeTim Just spotted it. I have stayed there a few times. Looking forward to this :)
Southport is a top seaside town
agree
I live in Southport, the best time to visit is when the Air show is on usually late summer,
also FYR there used to be a hovercraft that travelled between southport and Blackpool.
Agree
Look forward to you going back to Southport centre, I know it well.
I was born in Southport. Left when I was 35 in 2007. Been back 3 times. Each time its declined quite rapidly, sadly.
You need to look into why it has declined, not just say as all other towns, which they have too, need to also mention how it has rebuilt itself many, many times, looking better each year despite being messed on (by other local towns) too! GO SOUTHPORT !!
Love the video I live in Southport and your video was excellent 👌
Thanks david
used to love going to Southport for a day out
Great day out
My hometown! Great place to live and visit!
agree
I believe there used to be a hovercraft that could take you to Blackpool and back. Also been told that boats used to be able to dock.
so i hear
Lovely vlog Tim, the drone footage is stunning! Hope you Gabby and baby are ok x
thanks! the drone footage I borrowed this time ;-)
Love this video. Brought back memories of when I visited back in 2014 to run in a half-marathon. Such a nice place to just walk around, too or just sitting looking out to sea at sunset.
Thanks for watching Michael
Southport did have some trials with hovercrafts that would take you to Blackpool but it was unsuccessful, on a very clear day you can go to the end of the pier and see Snowdonia to your left, the forest of bowland to your right and the Lake District ahead of you, ( just behind the Blackpool tower) southport is a very flat place.
yes indeed ! oh thats a shame
@@WalkWithMeTim it’s annoying for anyone who wants to get to a motorway quickly you have to go towards liverpool or through ormskirk.
I bet
6:50 back in the day… right in front of you was the outdoor open air pool 🏊♀️
Thanks for another great vlog after watching this we have actually booked up in the Premier inn in the summer looks like there's loads for the kids to do
Thanks Tim keep up the good work
if only I was on commission ;-)
My son and his fiance live there in Birkdale Village..it's beautiful x
:-)
Thank you!
So many great memories of Southport from being a child, it's a shame pleasure land isn't quite the grand place it used to be there used to be a wooden coaster called the cyclone and an inverted coaster which is now in Blackpool. Now we take my son there once or twice a year , miniature railway is good fun , model village is a little small but I think the price is reasonable and the penny arcade on the pier is something a bit different. Southport isn't without it's faults but there is not enough negative to ruin a day out or put you off visiting.
Agree dave!
You missed the raised 5 inch gauge railway and the remote control car race track over behind the caravan park. Stayed there on hols at the caravan park for 2 weeks and when we arrived we heard a tannoy and thought what on earth is that and thought we would check it out. It turns out there was a massive event on with R/C cars racing each other. There was hundreds of gazebos with vans and tools and everything all for racing their R/C cars. They were saying there was National champions racing, European champions racing it seemed like a very serious event. I even decided I was gonna buy a R/C racing buggy myself when I got back from holiday and I still have it now. It's all wheel drive, individual active suspension on all 4 wheels and does about 15-20mph. All electric 👍
Love Southport, I need to visit again sometime.
oh no! ill have to visit next time
AND you must do Ainsdale Birkdale and Churchtown seperately, they all have great events/places!
Another great video Tim. Having grown up in Manchester in the 1970's I visited Southport many times over the years. It still looks a great place to visit in the future. Have a great weekend. Debbie & Patrick
Glad you enjoyed it thanks Debbie and Patrick, hope you are both well
Southport is we’re my daughter leant to walk right under the were you are standing xx 😘
No way
Southport - memories of humiliation. My mum, her sister and my cousin took a rowing boat out on Marine Lake on the grounds that mum had been in the navy - but never at sea. The sisters lost the oars and we were adrift, floating at random. In the meantime, my uncle had all the handbags and had wandered off for a walk. We had to be rescued. Mum had no money for a tip for the rescuers or for a calming cup of tea. It looks much bigger than I remember.
Been on the train and around the model village as a kid. Looks just the same!
Those old fashioned things have lasted forever and makes Southport and cost no more than maintenance. The bridge used to petrify me as I thought I’d fall down the cracks between the wooden boards.
Where did the floral clock go?
The pier used to have critters in the little pools surrounding the iron supports on the beach. Crabs and little fish. Need flip flops for walking on the beach, as you say, because of the shells and the razor shells - the long ones. If you put salt on their dens, the razor fish pop up like aliens. You used to need stuff for cleaning off oil from your feet too, but there’s not a sign of tanker spillages these days.
I don’t remember the cafe at the end of the pier, but that’s probably as my family always brought sandwiches and a flask from home. We did have a 99 each though every time.
You don’t get the smell of the sea or the cool breeze in your hair in the video but everything else! Thanks.
thanks for sharing lol
Not this model village as its is all new, it used to be by Victoria Park now its in Kings gardens. The things you quote as lasting forever, haha, the venetian bridge with the gaps in the boards are all refurbed too, that was care of lottery funding when the whole of the Kings gardens got assistance including a fab new play area, huge cafe/gardens/music area. The lake pix on here take when the swan pedalos were not out, nor the mississippi ferry, also there is a speed boat that gives whoopee rides along the lake but the other end as it needs that space to get its speed up and of course no obstacles. The end of the pier has changed several times and last modernisation was approx ten years ago with the cafe that 'hangs off' the side of pier!! Pier train gone too (another shame) it was replace by a bus type thing centre of pier (?) why!!? Great views on clear day. unfortunately as I write this it is closed for maintenance/rebuild as concerns re structure despite it being passed quite recently!! Next to go is Floral Hall/Ramada Hotel/Casino for a new Theatre complex, already been closed for nearly two years with zilch appearing to be done, this is what Southport (or now Sefton Council) are appauling at doing !!
Brilliant visuals, Tim. Colourful and ambient to say the least 👌
Glad you think so!

Hi Tim. Lived Southport great for walks everywhere there.
Yes it was!
As someone who lives just outside Southport (Scarisbrick) you’ve made it look amazing mate!
Really...
@@WalkWithMeTim ahaha yep, waiting to see what magic you can conjure with the god awful city centre
Brought back many happy memories for my partner who as a family always went for holidays in the Blackpool north west area.
Also, congratulations on 50k so glad I found you one Saturday night when I think you were in Yarmouth live. Also
To for the enjoyment you have given to the care home residents I’ve mentioned before.
that means a lot thank you Keith
Hi Tim ! Another great walk very enjoyable to watch. I love a miniature railway to. I think you should try and visit North Devon there are some beautiful seaside towns there . Especially Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and the stunning Lynton and Lynmouth. Thankyou for sharing with us love to you as always Tracey 💕 xxxx
You are welcome Tracey yes Devon is on the cards
@@WalkWithMeTim I can't wait you will love the area it's beautiful. Xxxx
I know ! maybe ill try surfing lol
I love Southport its like going back in time. I actually have strong links to the town because my great grandfather many times removed was William Sutton who was known as the Duke and founder of Southport. There is a large stone at the end of Lord Street all about him and a feature in the museum about him. Great video 👍 ps we call them shells mermaids purses
Shell mermaids purses! thats a new one
Great video Tim as allways allways nice sunny days 🌞🌞😁 I will be in Great Yarmouth this week looking forward to it and my 9th marathon this year have fantastic week end 🙂👍👍
You too Simon
The amusements and attractions look a whole lot more fun and much cleaner than any Pontins you have visited!! The long razor sharp shells are called Razor clams.
thanks
15:42 they did, they once had a hovercraft from Southport to Blackpool. Idk why it stopped though, maybe something to do with the tide? Although iirc it was quite expensive for the time to use it.
oh wow!
They stopped it because not only was it expensive to run but it was disturbing the wildlife in the esturay
I love Southport as my home town and it has its flaws, but overall its a quite unique and nice place.
agree

Looking forward to your views on the Town centre, it'll be interesting to hear an outside perspective on the high street especially.
