A full tour of Whitby in North Yorkshire, England starting at the Captain Cook statue and the Whale Bone arch and going on a full Whitby walking tour down through Whitby Bay, across Whitby Bridge and through the town to the 199 steps up to Whitby Abbey.
Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in the Scarborough borough of North Yorkshire, England. Situated on the east coast of Yorkshire at the mouth of the River Esk, Whitby has a maritime, mineral and tourist heritage. Its East Cliff is home to the ruins of Whitby Abbey, where Cædmon, the earliest recognised English poet, lived. The fishing port emerged during the Middle Ages, supporting important herring and whaling fleets, and was where Captain Cook learned seamanship.
Tourism started in Whitby during the Georgian period and developed with the arrival of the railway in 1839. Its attraction as a tourist destination is enhanced by the proximity of the high ground of the North York Moors national park and the heritage coastline and by association with the horror novel Dracula. Jet and alum were mined locally, and Jet, which was mined by the Romans and Victorians, became fashionable during the 19th century.
In this video we will take you to see Whitby Beach, and the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey.
The ruin at the top of the East Cliff is the town's oldest and most prominent landmark. Other significant features include the swing bridge, which crosses the River Esk and which is sheltered by the grade II listed East and West piers.
The town's maritime heritage is commemorated by statues of Captain Cook and William Scoresby, as well as the whalebone arch that sits at the top of the West Cliff. The town also has a strong literary tradition and has featured in literary works, television and cinema, most famously in Bram Stoker's novel Dracula.

Yes, my sister (From Denver Colorado) and I ( From Southern California) visited for two days back in April of 2017, loved every minute of it and would go back anytime. Best fish & chips in the world as well as a wealth of history, plus Whitby is my last name, so there's some family history there!

@@GimbalWalkTV Haha I suspected that we might have a difference of Roses. I was brought up in Lancashire and was often taken to Blackpool, Fleetwood, Southport or Morecombe. My first visit to the Yorkshire coast was to Robin Hood's Bay 62 years ago (see my comment on your video there). As a teenager, I developed a love for York and around Ripon (Fountain's Abbey for example) and Skipton. I have lived around the UK (Aberdeen, Liverpool, Bristol, Plymouth, Sunderland and the Midlands). I have visited many parts of the world but I now live in Thailand.

As a kid holidayed at Saltwick Bay. Walked the short distance to whitby to see the unloading of the fishing boats. Live in Australia now but when in the UK always go to Whitby. We now have a tradition. There is a house on this video just before the 199 steps, it has very small Red door at 8 min 08sec I have photographed my son next to it, then 10 years later my daughter and in 2014 myself. Next trip it is my wife's turn if I can persuade her. 😁

Thank you for this. I went to Whitby nearly 40 years ago and haven't been back as it's a long way to travel from London. At the time I went with my husband and in-laws. At the time I thought it was a lovely seaside town with a lot of charm. Remember getying a fresh mackerel off one of the fishing boats. Is there still a fishing industry there? . I'd love to go back to see it. I can recall the shops selling jet which was worn in victorian times as a sign of mourning, some were carved. Absolutely delightful. Thank you again.

I was in Whitby last September on holidays I have been over to England about half dozen times, and always go to Whitby. Those fish and chips at the water front you can't beat them and are well worth the trip from Australia. Last time I brought a pair of "Kippers" from the old smoke house, me and my "Pomie Mate" had them for breakfast. I brought the wife a necklace from "The Whitby Jet Store" and heaps of the old "Whitby Rock" from James rock shop. That video tour was the exact way we went when I was there, couldn't climb the steps this time getting to old, but I have done before. When all this "Virus" thing is finished with we are going back one more time to "Whitby" "Truly a Beautiful Place"

Some lovely memories of Whitby and a very tragic one . Favourite pub , Duke of York , fish and chips and a pint of Guinness overlooking the harbour , worst moment , watching people run down the harbour side trying to stop a small cruiser leaving the harbour without success , and it capsized tragically taking the lives of those on board .

Another brilliant walk - thank you so very much, more memories from when my late wife and I were young, strong and agile :) The Abbey was built on a high point to be closer to God of course. For any one interested ( I`m a Medieval Historian ) it was In the year 664 that the Synod of Whitby accepted the authority of the Roman Catholic Church for English Christianity, whilst the present Abbey ruins date from the 13th century - just slightly more important than the Dracula associations I tend to think :)
Well done with those 199 steps - a genuine achievement !!

@@GimbalWalkTV I am indeed so pleased to hear that. As a historian, I have always been aware how easily important historical perspectives can be lost or forgotten, so have a tendency to mention such things, which, alas, is an opinion that not everyone shares. I love Whitby North Sea Cod and chips and a local beer, but I also love history to :)
