    51 Chevy. Three on the tree. My uncle had one. Traded it for a new 63 Chevy Impala. I learned to drive stick on my oldest cousins 54 Chevy. Summer of 1976. I was 17. Love those early 50s chevys.

    Second one is a 54. 53 had round turn signals in front. My cousin had a 54 I learned to drive stick on.

    • @glennthomas7435
      @glennthomas7435 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 54 has frenched tail lights as this one does and were originally chrome. the 53 had no actual surround around the tail lights, they just jutted out of the body. We had a 54 station wagon my Dad bought new and we kept it for almost twenty years before it crapped out.

    There is a hidden ignition switch on the 1951. Right by the oil pressure gauge!

    • @gosportjamie
      @gosportjamie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I thought I saw that too. It's far from unusual for older cars to have hidden switches fitted to isolate the ignition or fuel pump on injected cars as the standard security equipment was pretty much non-existent so they were hugely easy to steal. Being as both vehicles clearly came from the same person then it's more than likely that they both have the same sort of security modification...

    Randy, in the beginning of the show, you were looking at an '03 Mazda. As you stood behind the car, to the left front side was an old white station wagon looking to be from the '60's. Can you do a video of it???👍👍

    Ah it’s so nice to see how far I’ve come. My first car would let any and all the rain inside. Puddles on the floors and seats soaked. It was a 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ceira... and while it drove from Colorado to Texas and drove just about anywhere it was junk... overheating, old, no title, would die sometimes for no reason. But geez did I put my heart into it and replace parts after parts... even put brand new tires on it 😂😂😂. The Mazda reminded me of it

    03 Mazda---NOOOOOOOO, that first old Chevy would be the one to get. Man that thing is sweet! inline 6, 3 on the tree, NICE!

  • @brian5o
    @brian5o 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    A 3-on-the-tree!!!! Buy it Randy and don't even think about replacing that inline-6!!!!
    BTW, here is the shift pattern:
    Up
    R 2
    The I I The
    Seat ---N--- Dash
    I I
    1 3
    Down
    R- back toward you and up (From Neutral)
    1st- back toward you and down (From Neutral)
    2nd- up- forward toward dash and up (From 1st)
    3rd- straight down (From 2nd)
    Neutral is usually spring-loaded so it'll automatically push the shifter towards the 2nd/3rd position when you push it into Neutral from Reverse or 1st.
    There is nothing like driving a vehicle with a 3-on-the tree- long, lazy gearing that pulls for days. Buy it, Randy, you'll really love it. I've been wanting to buy a 60s or 70s F100 with a 3-on-the-tree myself. It is a really special experience driving one.

    Grapefruit-size hail. We had one of those storms in '95 in Ft Worth. I bought an '88 Subaru wagon for $400 after that storm, windshield was already replaced, so much hail it looked like it was rolled. Drove that POS for four years.

      Replace the leaky fuel pump first. That will be the 20 minutes job. ☺

    • @TwentytenS4B8
      @TwentytenS4B8 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most likely the only reason it didn't run was the fuel pump was leaking fuel which is an indicator of the diaphragm inside failing. Ten to twenty minute job changing it out and it's running.

    • @CR7659
      @CR7659 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right, the ethanol gas eats up the inside of the pumps. The '50 I had I put one on and it ran and I lot drove it even though the oil was full of water and there was a mouse nest inside the valves.

    • @gosportjamie
      @gosportjamie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The problem with that is that this era of Mazda is already rust-prone, and having been swimming, this one is going to rust even quicker than normal. People who buy cheap cars tend to be an awkward lot so if someone buys that and it rusts out in a couple of years, they're going to moan like hell about it and tell everyone they know not to buy a car from Weird Beard or Randy. That kind of thing gets around, inevitably gets inflated in the retelling and can destroy a business very quickly...

    My first car was an '03 Mazda Protege and honestly the only reason I got rid of it was because of rust (Ilive in ontario Canada, that tends to happen a lot up here) it was a great little car, for the two years I had it I never had any major issues and I wasn't necessarily that "nice" to it either. Honestly If I ever find another one, (that's not rusted) I'll buy it. If the car goes for cheap go ahead and grab it. Parts are cheap too.

    Do note that if you go back far enough in the vintage of the “Chevy 265 straight 6-cylinder” engine you are going to run into poured crankshaft bearings. The transition was somewhere in the early 50’s. Rebuilding a 265 with poured bearings is not worth the effort as the skill to do that is long since been lost:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_straight-6_engine

    • @wilcalint
      @wilcalint 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting factoid. Toyota licensed the 265 6-cylinder engine from GM and used it for quite some years in their Land Cruiser: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Land_Cruiser

    When you put a battery in the trunk you better run some#0 3 copper. Welding cable are you're not going to get the amps to crank a big engine that's a lot of line loss

    Second 53 Chevy has an Olds V8 in it. Hard cranking probably from spun bearings as those Olds engines had garbage oiling systems. Only thing worse than those were the old Caddy V8's. If you were able to get it fired up, most likely it would have sounded like skeletons screwing on a tin roof.

    Get the one with the 6 cylinder and three on the tree. I have an old Chevy with that type drive train.

    The 1st Chevy (starter) sounds like it may have been switched to 12 volt....
