The 9 of wands is a card of rest after battle and the 7 is struggle with wands, so seeing the 8 as actually wands thrown as a defense makes sense. So it depends on what direction the Hermit is looking. If the 8 on left and on the right the Hermit looking to the left it can mean: a person sending communication while being alone, or a person defending himself (wands). 8 and the Hermit are antonyms, one fast the other slow. Now if the Hermit is walking away from the 8, maybe it is rejection of communication and need some time alone. This interpretation depends on the spread and adjacent cards. Keep in mind how cards look at each other is important to determine if they are interacting, cooperating, or avoiding each other.
